The fact that a film from my country is having such repercussion in the world's horror community is wild to me, especially since although it has some classic horror tropes the director also adds a lot of elements from Argentina's countryside folklore. I'm so glad you liked this movie as much as you did Emma, much love from Argentina
I’d love to jump down the rabbit hole and learn more about this lore! Are there really 7 rules? Is there really a song?
@a401i'm not all that familiar with the lore but from what i've heard they took inspiration from argentine folklore, especially about the "embichados" :)
@@jjsmama401 the movie is based on real rural legends but the rules are an exagerated version of what's said, they don't use them as 7 rules but more like advice for the countryside, some of those 7 rules are real things that are said around, like the electricity thing and that they know you're afraid, but its like what your creepy aunt says at christmas to you ahaha
Was the only person in my theater for a 6:45 PM showing easily the best theater experience I had all year 🤣
Yeah me and my girlfriend went and it was just us . Fucking loved it... could actually talk out loud during the holy shit moments
@@user-sh2th2yk3wthere were holy shit moments?
Omg. I watched this on my phone on a plane and I’m not easily spooked/freaked out, but this movie got me. This was terrifying. I can’t imagine watching it in a theater alone.
As a fluent Spanish speaker getting both terrified and when evil lurks has been amazing! When evil lurks is an incredible horror film I’ll never forget those jaw dropping scenes! Thanks for the awesome content your still the best in the horror game! Stay spooky
I don't understand how here in Argentina we have to wait a month for this argentinian movie to be released while it's already playing in the US. Anyway, love your channel Emma!! Your recommendation made me even more excited than I already was to see this film!
It is going to arrive in Argentina right after the elections. I think people in Argentina are going to find a lot of different meanings for what is going on in the story.
@@johnf6384wait wdym, spoil me the bit that could be related pls, I'm so curious
If iirc its an american production so maybe that plays a part, idk
There's a big spoiler for one of the most shocking parts in the trailer, so don't watch it if you haven't yet! But I definitely agree this is one of the best of the year.
Thanks for the heads up!
Good looking out!
Yeah I made sure to keep it out of the clips!
Where can you watch this film??
@@sweetandsavoury It's in limited theatrical release now. Will be on Shudder Oct 27.
I'm so proud of hearing Emma talking of my country! Love from Argentina 🇦🇷🖤
I honestly cried at “that scene” … it’s sooo real and brutal and it goes on for about a minute or so … it’s probably the most shocking moment I’ve ever been in a movie since hereditary’s “head scene”. But The most terrifying part is the reaction the characters have to that moment and how superb the acting is!!… it’s so realistic and just really hard to watch. If the movies story and over all acting wasn’t so amazing and unique I probably would of walked out … but even after I was kinda traumatized I wanted to see where the story would go. I’m glad I stayed… and the end scene is settle but if you know what it meant, it will leave you feeling heart broken and mentally scared.
Best film of the year for me so far. Any genre. Totally gnarly.
This is the worst movie of the year, and it's not just a matter of opinion. It's possible to point out all the script errors and senseless things. You can't excuse what the movie doesn't explain as something implicit and open to interpretation
@@MWN2913 💅💃💅
@@MWN2913Sooo everyone else is wrong?
@@MWN2913You cant excuse the lack of explanation and that is true .But what is the reason for faulting a film that gives no explanation for its main evil? What does it matter? Halloween, The Shining, Christine, etc dont explain most evil and they are classic. So is this
@@MWN2913I can't say it's the worst film of the year but I Def don't understand the hype for this. Is this movie "the best" simply because of the two shocking scenes? The movie had major holes in it, the pacing wasnt great, the stupidity level takes you out of it and the ending just killed the movie. I felt zero tention because it was too all over the place. Hereditary is still my top horror film because the pacing and tention it builds is fantastic all to lead up to a great ending. Remove the shocking scenes from When Evil Lurks and I don't think you have much of anything.
Emma, I absolutely agree on your point about the non climactic ending but I can also understand how defeated the characters ended up. I honestly wished they would’ve shown us few more glimpses of the evil that would ensue but it was surely implied 😅
I watched another explanation of this film and I could barely stomach that. Honestly. 2 years ago I could’ve watched this movie without much issue. Having a child really changes the kinds of media you can handle.
Lame.

Fun fact: I don't know if you noticed, but in the part where the autistic boy's father goes to the car to sleep with him, he finds a drawing made by the autistic boy that is clearly a drawing of the final scene when the possessed children and the demon They're walking into the sunset... It gives the impression that this boy already had some connection with this, as his brother says in the middle of the film that he keeps drawing pictures in his room...
Just saw this on Shudder. Only movie to actually make my jaw drop multiple times. At the one scene (you know) I literally said "Holy fucking shit!" out loud.
Same! I screamed OMFG!
just watched it today. I'll reply with an emoji 🐕
*CAREFUL, MILD SPOILERS*
I think there are arguably 2 scenes that are like "holy fucking shit". The dog scene and the walking along the road scene.
There are also more scenes even (for instance the goat scene gets 3rd prize) but I think those other two are the... "best"? I don't know if that's the correct word, but they're the "holy fucking shit" scenes.
I'm from Argentina and I had no idea about this one, it sounds way more interesting than the new exorcist film.
Just saw this last night! Great job emma on editing your footage. Guys dont watch the trailers full of spoilers. For people worried about the gore. Its more of disturbing and gets under your skin. Not as bad as something like Saw X or anything gore wise but def more scary. So glad emma thought it was as awesome as i did! Go in blind as possible.
Thanks! I love horror movies, but the gore turns me off sometimes.
@dariamorgendorffer7813 it's definitely graphic don't get me wrong lol but not overkill with it imo like some torture type movies are. It's earned and more for impact then to make you sick to your stomach lol
Little girl getting dogged was way worse than anything in saw x
@fritzthecat8158 If you read the comment I'm talking about gore. Ya that scene has more impact and stays with you more. But if your talking about gore. There wasn't much compared to a girl sawing her body parts off lol that scene was like 3 minutes of straight gore and blood everywhere. The dog scene is about 3 seconds of hardly any blood. But ya way more disturbing like I said.
@@vinnymal1051it was more than three seconds…they kept going back to it and it felt like it lasted forever!
Maybe if I had seen it in the theater I would have been more scared. But watching at home just made me angrier at the characters. They all know the rules & they keep breaking them.
same. I liked the move, but sometimes the characters just decide to do the stupidest things. They have been told the rules and even have people who "know what to do" tell them directly what to do, and just do the opposite.
It's not what people actually does? People's know that things like drugs are Bad but still consume it. Some smoke cigarrettes, some over consume natural resources, and so no. I mean we are stupid by nature
Running high emotions, demon controlling their minds, taunting, panic situations, It's easy to see why they didn't behave properly.
I’m glad someone else agrees with me on this. Yes, it has a few good scenes, but the characters were infuriating
It was so good. Rugna is becoming one of my fav horror directors. There’s a running scene from ‘terrified’ that I still think about often
Wouldn't say scariest but definitely most jarring. 🐶🐶
I agree that it was more shocking and jarring unexpected wtf moments and disturbing than "scariest".
I saw this a few days ago and it has really stayed with me. I left the cinema, went home and rented Terrified, which i also enjoyed. Now someone tell me what links the intricate machines that are seen/used in each film.
We have really been spoiled this week it feels like vlogmas. Thanks Emma 🎉🎉🎉
Saw this one last night at the cinema in Melbourne! I agree with you on the climax, although I think I found it even more disappointing than you did unfortunately :(
In general though, I just wasn't a big fan of the (light spoilers) three horror cliches of the rules exposition, visiting an expert and creepy kids all in such a short time span... it really dragged me out.
(Heavier spoilers) Also something about almost all of the child characters of the film felt off... none of them felt anything more than cardboard to me (which may be the point) but because of that it sapped some of the impact/tension/disturbing factor! Reminded me too much of the second half of Sinister, which also let me down.
I loved the line "evil like children, and children like evil". And by the way, Shudder has sent some youtubers tubs of Ice cream with the name of the movie on them. And the flavor is apple! Whoever watched the film will understand why!
seen many reviewers call this a spanish film, thanks for getting it right. greetings from argentina, glad movies like this are starting to come out of here.
I'll add this to my list! Thank you Emma, and Hi Grommit ❤
I saw the movie few days ago and wow, it just blew me away and landed straight into my top ten. Very intense at times, some really wtf-moments, great performances and it really stays with you for a while after watching. I already liked Terrified. This director is awesome!
Wow I’m completely surprised by your scores!!!! This was on my radar but I didn’t give it half as much of my attention as I am now! Going to watch as soon as it comes on Shudder!
Definitely worth seeing it on the big screen. Awesome film.
Definitely worth a watch!!
Holy cow, I'm usually very strong for scary films, but this one made my heart pound throughout many scenes and basically stop during one specific scene when the characters are arguing 💀
I saw that movie appear on streaming channels but I didn’t pay attention because I was sure I saw it . I saw a lot and it’s harder and harder to find good horror movies. But when I finally paid attention omg I fell of my chair . You have the right words for it : Brutality, urgency, journey, pure horror. I’m not easily impressed but wow I was. You go in this movie not knowing what it is and you keep being surprised at every corner. And the family story is interesting too! Seriously after watching this gem I was so happy ; finally a GREAT one! One that will stay on my high rated favourite movies of all time . Not the scariest of the year the scariest in many years!
And it has a 98% on RT! This is the possession film that Hollywood could never ever create. Foreign horror is horror done right. It can be unapologetic, visceral and does not give a f@%k about offending people.
8/10 for me. Yeah that climax didn't do it for me either. The first hour was really good. The last 30 minutes I didn't care for it too much. Overall I thought The Wailing did the whole premise better.
I worked on the publicity for When Evil Lurks and even though I simply watched it on a screen at home during the day, I'll never forget the road scene with the mom carrying her son. It legit haunts me.
It’s definitely messed up.
The scene with the dead child in Aterrados is chilling, really disturbing. Thank you for your interesting review, i hope the movie is released soon in Spain.
I drove an hour to see this in the cinema last weekend and it was SO worth it. Believe the hype!!!! One of my favorites from this year, too!
I trust Emma & will be enthusiastically seeing this after this review. Thanks Emma 😊
Oh my sweet f*** lol, i found my jaw on the floor pretty much the entire movie, My only complaint is the ending as i felt like it shouldnt of been done yet and could kept on going for a little bit longer. I will be definitely buying this one once its on blu ray for sure.
Hoy la veo. Saludos desde Acapulco
Excelente reseña
Adding to my watchlist!! Thanks Em!
"Repulsive..careful with snack choice!" If that isn't a "Watch this now" I don't know what is. Can't wait to see this!
This sounds like top 3 material. Infinity Pool is at the #3 spot with Beau is Afraid and When Evil Lurks being the top 2.
whats on top 1?
You are the second person who's reviews I trust that have told me not to eat while watching this, and that it will actually stick with you. With that said, I'm on it. It's on the menu. Please never stop!
Every new horror movie which is released is called `the scariest film of the year´ nowadays
lol
Emma throwing around those big numbers! I've been waiting for this one and feel justified in it by your praise. Cheers!
TERRIFIED is amazingly scary! Loved it
So you got me so ready to see this, it sounds like an actual scary film and I would love that (for a change) the genre films are still fun for me, I mean who can not be up for watching a bunch of annoying jerks go into a haunted "something" and get there just deserts, either you have gotten very good at finding gems or the producers are watching your channel and making films based on your opinion. Thanks, oh and Patrick Wilson is from Tampa and we have been watching his family for years, his dad has been a TV anchor for 50 years and retired, now his brother does it for like 25 years now.
Can't wait to see this. Great review Emma. Terrified was just incredible so this director is one to watch
dang, high praise from the horror queen… i’m so psyched for this film! x
Love your enthusiasm! Your point that we rarely see this level of brutality in a film this rich with story is a strong point. The violence isn’t a crutch, it’s a punctuation mark. Still, I just couldn’t love this one. It eventually felt like style over substance. Maybe it was a tempo thing, I don’t know. Still, 7/10.
Thanks for the review. Can't wait to see it!
When that dog scene early on happens I felt my stomach literally sink with dread. I knew it was coming but it still got me.
A film for me. Thank you for your Review!!! 👺👺👺
Thanks for the Review and Video 😀
I will be watching this tonight! Tysm ❤
Have you watched Mike Flanagan’s new “The Fall of the House of Usher” yet??!! SO good! ❤
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater and I was terrified. I loved it. I completely agree with Emma. This truly is the scariest film of the year.
Hell yeah this was a MASTERPIECE!!! My mouth dropped so many times I couldn’t breathe what I just saw!! Looked so real and wish I knew how they made it look so real!!
Thanks for the review, Emma. You gave the film high marks, so I will definitely check it out later this month.
I agree. It’s a great horror movie. It tops my list too. Glad I was able to see it in a theater.
Please make a spoiler full review!!!! ❤
Wow! I had the total wrong impression of this movie. Somehow I expected gore and cheap scares. So glad you reviewed this, I was going to miss it but now I'm definitely going to check this out! 👌
You're in for a treat lol
Great review!!! I am definitely going to check this one out.I keep hearing good stuff about this one.I never heard about Terrified. That one sounds good also.I am glade I got another one to check out on top of the one your reviewed.
This movie sounds so cool Emma!
this one, Night of the Hunted, and Hell House 4 are my remaining most anticipated this month. Really looking forward to this
Don't forget about "Dark Harvest"... It's on VOD tomorrow!!!🎃☠️🎃
This looks fantastic. Really looking forward to it.
Saw it tonight. It really did deliver. I agree with you, one of the best horrors of the year. Almost perfect.
I've just walked out of the screening of MOUNT CHIAK, a South Korean elevated Blair Witch Project.. and I think you need to watch it Emma, and share your thoughts on it!
2 weeks until it hits shudder in the uk, i cant wait!
Think I got too hyped for it after seeing a few hyperbolic thumbnails. I didn’t want it to end just because I wanted it to salvage the good will earned from the first 2/3. The last act was bad.
Banger!!! Can't wait to see this.
This has been building up a good hype the last week or two
I hope this gets in theatres in the North of England.
I am so glad I was able to watch this phenomenal film on the big screen. There is an explanation for the use of certain type of characters in that part of the movie you said did not quite work for you. This is because there is a strong political subtext in this film that is going to go unnoticed for an audience unfamiliar with the current social situation in Argentina. There is a discussion about indoctrination of children at schools over there, and also there is an emerging libertarian movement that is very new and might even win the upcoming elections. The supporters of this movement are mostly young people who despise older voters and their politics, they are metaphorically "devouring them". The government is even mentioned at the beginning of the movie, when the landowner says that they planted the infected body in his land. Anyway, if you leave out this interpretation, the movie still works perfectly and the proof of that is that it has connected with the audience in very powerful way.
Interesting...and your hair looks so good. 🥰
Those were my thoughts on "Terrified" - 3/4 of the movie I thought was great but it kinda lost me towards the end. Still recommend it often as it has some really interesting and scary scenes. I'm really excited to see this one!
Great review 😊
I didn't love it - just watching in theatre last night. For me it was an interesting concept, with some shocking moments, executed in a way that felt like a long Walking Dead episode, with poor tension building, unfulfilled plot devices and about zero actual scares.
Great review, those were my thoughts too - it got kind of confusing towards the end, just as equally shocking and gruesome. This is definitely one of my favorite horror flicks of 2023 for sure! I highly recommend, and I gave it a 7/10 on IMDB
I agree. The climax scene (school) probably could have been executed better, it's all over the place at times, it's not "bad", it serves its purpose, but definitely it's the weakest part of the film. Still, you don't discard a film for one scene if the rest is worth watching. The movie is beautifully shot, great performances, great practical effects, the pace is perfect, it's a movie that doesn't stop to explain anything, and instead builds its world as it progresses (smart move for nowadays short attention span tiktok audiences), it's original, and not in just one way, but has several original ideas for the genre. Overall 8/10. A must watch for 2023.
Spookyastronauts: Reviews you can trust from a true horror fan👍🏽. So tired of those RUclips reviewers who: “I loved ‘Halloween Eleventy Twelve’ and ‘Chucky: We Lost Count’ because…it was..another one!” 🤦🏽♂️
Going in blindly tonight!
Jaw dropping
funny you mention the last of us in the intro because the music from the Last of Us was made by one of the biggest figures in argentine rock music, both OST are influenced by argentine folk music
I can't wait to see it. I got asked to go to the premier but I couldn't go 😢
i use my AMC A list like a streaming service, i just scroll through the list of movies that are playing and pick the one that looks the most interesting to me. the poster looked interesting so i thought 'what the hell i will watch this one'. best decision EVER. i went in cold and liked it so much imma see it again on wednesday.
Ive been waiting for this review!
but why pedro was horrified when he found out his son ate his mother. it must have happened when they were still in mirta's house but his son spits out her bits in their home in the village. it is not like they'd forget about their mother.
Emma! He finally just saw this movie and I loved it! I’m not sure I’d call it scary though. It was shocking and engrossing (no pun intended). I was completely drawn in and had to watch it twice.
can't wait to watch this!
Finally got to this one today. I agree, a bit like Terrifier I think the 3rd act, while not bad at all, wasn't quite up to the intensity of the first 2 acts. It did lose me a little at that point. Also seeing it as a very 1:1 metaphor for... you know what... deflated it a little in my estimation, but I think I'll gibe it another go soon to see if watching it again smooths out some of those things for me.
Man I can not wait for this one
That DAMN Goat!! Cheeziz Cripes that Goat....Period
I CANNOT WAIT!!!
sounds decent, can't find it streaming atm
saw it in theaters loved it.
Do a full spoiler discussion!
I appreciate not including spoilers but I'd like to hear you talk about this movie freely in some other video. I didn't find this scary but it's very shocking in many parts.
"Terrified" was very creepy and scary IMO. "When Evil Lurks" is definitely on my list to watch. If it's scarier than Terrified, then I'm going to have nightmares.
Couldn’t agree more with the climax opinion, but the rest of it…wow. I haven’t been that on edge in a theater in a loooong time. Maybe the meanest film I’ve seen in I don’t know how long. Thanks for all the great content, Emma!
I freaking loved this movie, I plan on watching again, soon.
Does anyone know when this is available to stream???
Just watched this tonight and Wow.. this horror movie went places a lot of directors or production companies wouldn't even dream of touching... and it was pretty amazing and brutal. Definitely might have dabbled that toe over the line.
Omg screaming at the clip you used while saying "You can have your cake and eat it too"
I saw it on Monday. 3.8/5. ...didn't love the ending. Not sure to feel about his son... but mostly had a good time. As brutal and graphic as it is, Saw X got under my skin more. The gore in this happens fast...
I feel the same way that it was great but I didn't know what to make of the son and ending. Was expecting more for the ending.
