Berezovsky . . . I shall have to keep my ears open for him in the future. While I still prefer Chesnokov's setting of this psalm (I can't get over that basso profundo solo), this is very, very moving. Some of the chord progressions are utterly heart-wrenching, and the tempo changes give a sense of the urgency of the plea.
@Niffiwan There are a couple performances of this symphony, but I never came across a published score. Which leaves the question of the performance source open :)
Berezovsky died tragically and very young, at 32 - and he definitely could have done much more than he did, and much was lost, only a dozen or two of his works survived, being forgotten for quite a long time. Which is very sad - suffice to say that he was one of the best pupils of the famous Padre Martini in Bologna, who praised his abilities, and in 1771 Berezovsky (with Mysliveček) has received the title of Bologna Academician - directly after 14-year Mozart the year before - a notable fact.
Wikipedia states that there's also one symphony of his that was discovered in the Vatican Library in 2002. Do you know if that has been published anywhere?
VitaliyGR 1 год назад This piece is considered to be the first Russian choral fugue ever, and there were not many since - only in works of the composers who received European education, Bortnyansky should defenintely be named as one who also used fugue and fugato forms in his choral concerts.
Very old-school sound even for its time, an interesting contrast with the more famous Chesnokov setting. It sounds almost Baroque or older. OK singing except the choir almost completely ignores the dynamic markings in the score--I see 'pp' several places but I sure don't hear any pianissimo. The performance undoubtedly loses quite a bit because of this.

I have never before heard a Russian choral fugue . . . what a treat! Thank you!

@VitaliyGR Interesting... thanks for the tip. I Googled максим березовский симфония and found an mp3 of the symphony. :)

Bortnyansky is genius for sure! However Berezovsky wrote this concerto.

don't agree, it can't be compared with baroque. the piece is ruled by after-rameau specifications. also it sounds exactly like mozart's sacred works.
