The greatest bassi profundi in Russia are called octavists and they can hit a perfect fifth below D1, with no or little loss of tone quality. Search for Pavel Chesnokov's ''Do not cast me off" you won't believe it.
As I rise from sleep, I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity, for through Thy great goodness and patience Thou wast not angry with me, an idler and sinner, nor hast Thou destroyed me with mine iniquities, but hast shown Thy usual love for mankind; and when I was prostrate in despair, Thou hast raised me up to keep the morning watch and glorify Thy power. And now enlighten my mind’s eye, and open my mouth that I may meditate on Thy words, and understand Thy commandments, and do Thy will, and hymn Thee in heartfelt confession, and sing praises to Thine all-holy name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. O come let us worship God our King. O come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and God. O come let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and God. Amen.
@@luisloya1120 Hello, it is beautiful I agree with you but it is not my prayer - I found the prayer on an Orthodox website and it touched me and encouraged me so I shared it on YT. I am so glad that it blessed you. Thank you for writing! CHRIST IS RISEN!
From the King James, Psalm 65:4: Blessed is the man whom Thou choose, and cause to approach unto Thee, that he may dwell in Thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of Thy house, even of Thy temple. Used in the General Panikhida or Requiem Service: Deacon: Alleluia (thrice) in the Eighth Tone Verse 1: Blessed are those whom thou hast chosen and taken, O Lord Verse 2: Their remembrance of them is from generation to generation. Verse 3: Their souls shall dwell with the blessed. Choir: Alleluia. (Thrice) O Thou who, with wisdom profound, mercifully orderest all things, and givest that which is expedient unto all men, thou Only Creator: Give rest, O Lord, to the souls of thy servants who have fallen asleep; For they have set their hop on thee, our Maker, the Author of our being, and our God. This verse is often sung by the choir at the final leave taking of the deceased, at times during the Liturgical year, such as on the Saturday of Soul in the Fourth Week of Great Lent: KOINONIKON (COMMUNION HYMN) FOR SOULS SATURDAY IN TONE EIGHT Blessed are they whom Thou hast chosen and taken to Thyself, O Lord. Their memorial is from generation to generation. Alleluia. This is often again sung by the choir as in the RUclips example here.
Dozens of places, really. Mainly on Russian forums and sites devoted to choral music in general and church in particular. Some of the scores are quite unique. It's hard to tell all the sources, as I collect my score library for many years already.
@Gunnarr123abc Nah, not me :) some church music scores can be found only in manuscript, especially re-worked pieces. This one by Lvovskiy was originally written for mixed SATB choir (and available in print), and rendered for male choir by Arсhimandrite Matfey, the famous precentor of monastery and other choirs (died in 2009), and it was never published. Well, the old non-computerized "handmade" way works still. Feels like 300 years ago :)
On RUclips, anything by the Sretensky Monastery Choir, especially Lvovsky's Cherubic Hymn (fantastic ); Kedrov's Otche Nash (The Lord's Prayer) by Verhoeff's Don Kosaken Choir; Sheremetev's Now The Power of Heaven by Choir Academy dir Alexander Sedov; Sviridov's Lord I Cry Unto Thee by St Petersburg Kapella Choir. You could also try Bortnansky's Sacred Concertos, each of which is in three parts, the middle being slow ans spiritual. That lot should throw up some more suggestions from YT. Happy listening.
Also Lvovsky's Now The Powers of Heaven. The only good version on YT being that posted by Arquivos do Ocidente. Performers not known but could be Sretensky Monastery Choir.
This is magnificent. Can anybody point me towards a resource which shows the words phonetically? I want the a cappella group I belong to to sing this. Crossing my fingers. Thanks.
No, I am not to be found in any social network :) have too much to do offline. And sadly, too little time to make new additions to the channel. Though I have plans for some nice additions, but who knows when :).
Makes me wish one of the cathedral choirs I sing in in England had an oktavist. The top "tenor" part is easily sung effectively by counter-tenors - in fact, the top B flat in this recording is definitely falsettoed, as are some of the As... now, as mentioned, all we need to find is a Bass 2 with these bottom Fs...
VitaliyGR I have to know, please, where do you find all this music? AND the scores? I am SO obsessed, and enchanted by russian liturgical choral music and it's practitioners, I swear I was born into the wrong country... where do you get all of this? You are such a resource.
Vitaliy, do you have a facebook? I'd love to invite you to this group I'm in where I think you'd make some really great contributions. It's a group about Basso Profundo's, essentially.
This song is also called " Communion Verse" on the Divine Liturgy c.d. by The Moscow sretensky monastery choir.
There is something other-wordly about male voice choirs and especially Russian music. Thanks be to God
God ? No. These are men. Fortunately.
Умопомрачительно!!!
Изумительное песнопение и исполнение!

I had two brothers (both dead now) who could do that. We call them contrabasses.

Ethereal and moving.

Could I hear a D1 under the last chord?
It's actually a Db1, as the recording is a semitone flat compared to the score. Absolutely incredible.
💙💛
