The Marvelettes had many hits in the 1960's."Playboy", "Beechwood 45789", "Too Many Fish In the Sea" "Don't Mess With Bill" "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game". They were a great LIVE group too.
"Money" by Barrett Strong was the first Motown hit but only reached #2 on the R&B chart, so your statement is accurate. Just thought you may like to know this about that song if you didn't already.
THE BEATLES covered Please Mr. Postman on their U.K. album "WITH THE BEATLES" and on the U.S. album "THE BEATLES SECOND ALBUM. They do a GREAT JOB on it! This song meant a lot to me cos in early 1965 when I was still 17, I started writing to a boy in Liverpool, England. We were pen pals for 3 1/2 years and fell in love with each other in our letters. We used to write letters as long as 40 - 54 pages HANDWRITTEN BOTH SIDES OF THE PAPER. Then August of 1968 I flew to England to meet him in person for the first time. Stayed 5 weeks with him and his family (mom, dad, sis and brother). A year later he emigrated to Canada, and 2 years later in 1971 we got married. He is deceased now. But I STILL have ALL the letters we ever wrote each other. SO I was ALWAYS watching my mailbox and disappointed if a letter didn't come from him. SO I can TOTALLY relate to this song! I MISS getting LETTERS from ANY ONE. It's a LOST art now. Emails and messages on the internet do not provide the same feeling and joy of getting a letter or a greeting card from some one in the mail.
Here's the amazing story about the Marvelettes and "Please Mr. Postman." Lead singer Gladys Horton put the group together with Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart and Georgianna Dobbins to participate in their high school talent contest. The prize was an audition for Tamala Records (later to become Motown) for the first 3 places. The girls came in 4th place but the teacher who put on the show thought enough of their talent to pull strings and included them. Of the four acts, they were the only act chosen. After being told that having original material would be key to them getting a record deal, Georgianna wrote "Please Mr. Postman" overnight. Days later, they were in the studio, having never performed professionally before, with their new name, the Marvelettes. Everyone in the studio, from drummer Marvin Gaye on up knew it was going to be a smash and it hit #1 by November, 1961. The rest, as they say, is history!
You can't imagine how much getting a letter meant! There was no internet, texting, email, etc. There was mail, phone (which was crazy expensive for long distance) and in person. That was it! So recovering a hand written letter from somebody brought joy.
One of my favorite songs! Of course the Marvelettes were the first one to sing this song, but there were many covers. My first favorite cover is by the Carpenters.
Born in 1960 but my Dad loved music&taught himself how to play drums. Always had music in our house. Still have the old console record player. 60 yrs later...❤so many genres. Thanks Dad. RIP🎵🎼🎶
Again I first heard this song from The Beatles' cover then as I got a little older learned about the original. Probably a common occurrence for many of us growing up in the 60's. The Marvellettes also had a couple of great songs in - Tonight Was Made For Love and Forever.
@@Zebred2001 I believe it was on their first album. The only one I owned by them. It disappeared with a handful of my albums. Strange because I never gave away albums.
The Beatles even covered this song! So many great girl groups back then. The Chantels, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, you guys are in store for much, much more.
Couple of tracks that always take me back to my mom are: Leader Of The Pack, My Boyfriend's Back, Tell Laura I Love Her, Rave On, Purple People Eater, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, Barbara Ann and Boy From New York City.
This was a giant hit when I left highschool here in Denmark that same year of 1961. Not that my parents appreciated it much 🙂 the Beatles later gave it a brush-up.
This was Motown’s first Billboard # 1 hit. The Marvelettes had two lead singers Gladys Horton and Wanda Young Rodgers. Gladys is singing the lead on this one. Also, Marvin Gaye is playing the drums for the Marvelous Ones on this. Don’t Mess With Bill is a great one with Wanda singing the lead. Check out the live version of Too Many Fish In The Sea from the Marvelettes.
Receiving letters. Social media has its place but it doesn't replace a hand written letter. Something about the Spirit flowing through the hand to a blank sheet of paper.
Since you seem to be heavily into oldies, you may be interested in a few great ones that have NEVER been reacted to before by anyone. "A Thousand Stars" (1961) by Kathy Young; "Twist and Shout" (1962) by The Isley Brothers; "Hurt" (1961) by Timi Yuro; and "Peace of Mind" (1965) by The Magnificent Men.
The Marvelettes a girl group from the mid- 60's schoolmates( Gladys Horton,Katherine Anderson, George Anna Tillman, Juanita Cowart and Georgia Dobbins) out of Inkster ,Michigan ... " DON'T MESS WITH BILL"( 1966) "THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME (1967)"MY BABY MUST BE A MAGICIAN"(1968)
Shawn and Mel, I believe this song was written in the time when our boys were going off to war and the girls are waiting to hear from their men that they're returning home to them. I was 10 when this song hit the charts with many more Marvelettes hits to come.
once again you hear the Fabulous Funk Brothers and this was written by the post man for the studio. also one of the Marveletts just passed away recentely
Early Motown. Definitely diff then the doo-wop era. LOVED this song. Was my 7th grade coming of age song!!! R& B was transitioning away from the late 50s sound. Just started with this. I can even see the way we used to dance. Can't remember what it was called. Hey you should check out the BRISTOL STOMP.
I bet anything Mel could and would have been Lead Singer of 1 of these 60's Groups had she been Born then. I have NO doubts about it!! She can match their voices pretty well when she sings along..lol Gotta Luv Her..Your a Lucky Man..my friend !!!😁
IT'S KIND OF FUNNY THAT THE YOUNGER GENERATION WOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO WRITE A LETTER WHEN I WAS IN THE NAVY IT WAS THE BEST DAY OF THE WEEK TO GET A LETTER FROM MY BABY. USUALLY SEALED WITH PERFUME AND LIP STICK

Beechwood 45789
This was THE FIRST #1 HIT FOR Motown Records!! I love all their songs.
"Money" by Barrett Strong was the first Motown hit but only reached #2 on the R&B chart, so your statement is accurate. Just thought you may like to know this about that song if you didn't already.

Just another great song from the sixties. I am sure that each and everyone of them have a great voice.
One of the most popular songs that we danced to in the 60's,
This music heavily influenced the Beatles in their early days, which they always acknowledged in interviews.
As did The Ronnettes - John Lennon famously had a major crush on Ronnie Spector!
OLDIES LOADED WITH TALENT,TALENT,TALENT
One of my favorite songs! Of course the Marvelettes were the first one to sing this song, but there were many covers. My first favorite cover is by the Carpenters.
💖💖💖 When I was Young we played this song every Day/Week, my sisters were dancing thru the room.
While you two are enjoying the Doo Wop rabbit hole, I think you'll really like the song "It's In His Kiss (the shoop shoop song) by Betty Everett.
This was the start of moving away from doo-wop. Early 60s. Early Motown.
The Beatles and the Carpenters both covered this and had hits with them!
The marvelettes someday, someway. Sold underrated Gem.
I love the oldies keepem coming.
Their voices are the tops , over the simple beat of music. They are singing it !!
Born in 1960 but my Dad loved music&taught himself how to play drums. Always had music in our house. Still have the old console record player. 60 yrs later...❤so many genres. Thanks Dad. RIP🎵🎼🎶

I was just a kid growing up in Pico Rivera in those days. Looking back i believe Black music groups played a major role in integrating America.

This song was Motowns first million seller and number one record. This put Motown on the map
Please do "Don't mess with bill" always been my favorite marvelettes song
Freddie Gorman still gets royalties as one of the songwriters. He said one time he got a check for $1.00 from Motown

Elvis had a song about Return to Sender at about the same time. Also a song about wearing each others class rings and going steady.
they were all teenagers in high school about 16 or 17 years old when they did this song glady was 16 the lead singer
The background vocals KILL!!!!! Phil Spector's fingerprints all over the recording.
This predates Phil Spector's Wall of Spund productions.

Try Jackie DeShannon, "When you walk into the room", now that you're on the 50's/60"s ladies.

Paul powered through it..
Marvelettes rabbit hole.. Too Many Fish in the Sea, Don't Mess With Bill
If you like her voice, go listen to the Chantels with lead singer Arlene Smith singing Maybe. Her voice is so beautiful
This song always makes me think of the Alice Munro story where the girl ends up marrying the 'postman' ... !
