'Fame' is the theme song for the 1980 movie of the same name. Set in New York City, it chronicles the lives and hardships of students attending the High School of Performing Arts from their auditions to their freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years.
I didn't go to that high school but I attended its sister school Music & Arts High School. I graduated in 1981. I heard they held auditions for the movie at my school's auditorium, but I learned of it too late. I know the gospel choir was in a scene in the movie, howbeit a short scene. I also knew Gene Anthony Ray who played dancer Leroy Johnson since elementary school. He used to always dress in fancy clothes. Unfortunately he lived a wild life of partying, drinking, and drugging. He died of a stroke and complications from AIDS in 2003.
Irene could dance, sing and act. She was a triple threat. Such an inspiration. I hope that the future generations don't forget her name. Fly high Irene!
She got the energy because she was young!!! LOL That kind of dancing and energy was normal in our day!!! Give a listen to Out Here On My Own by Irene. Not all the dancing but a great voice singing an amazing ballad!!
This very talented singer/songwriter of Afro-Puerto Rican and Cuban American heritage became an international sensation back in the 1980's. With her having a major role in the movie "Fame." And singing the title song of the blockbuster movies of both "Fame and Flash Dance." Made her an international star all at once. Brilliant! She won the Oscar for her song she wrote "What a Feeling" for the movie "Flash Dance." And in 1981 the song "Fame" which she sung also won the Oscar for "Best Original Song." Note: I was close friend with the Asian girl Peggy Li who was in the movie and played a small part with one line that was very colorful. She was a student at the very famous "High School for The Performing Arts" in New York City. Which was where the movie was filmed at.
This is from the movie FAME. 2 other songs you should listen to from that movie, "OUT HERE ON MY OWN" by Irene & "I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC", which is sung by the entire class of students. Simply amazing!! You should watch the song clips from the movie. I'm so enjoy her voice!
Oh yeah I do all the songs from the movie. And the TV show. But I love the body electric. And the song when they were all in the cafeteria. I love that one, shady sadie. And I hate that they tried to remake FAME.. But yeah Out here on my own and the Body electric. We're so great. ♥️♥️♥️
@@willowb1527 Oh yes, "Out Here on My Own" and "I Sing the Body Electric" are great songs. The cafeteria song you mentioned is called "Hot Lunch Jam" and I LOVE that song, too! I also love "Red Light" by Linda Clifford. Her vocals are incredible! I never saw the new FAME, but I doubt it could be better than the original.😁
She got her start in the 1970's movie called "Sparkle" with Phillip Micheal Thomas from the 1980's TV show "Miami Vice" The brothers loved us some Iren Cara.
Somehow I missed Sparkle; I'll have to look for it. But, going all the way back, Irene was in a Broadway musical as a child and is on the album (though I can't think of the name of it right now; it isn't one that's well known today and hasn't been revived), but she was also on the Electric Company TV show on PBS as a child (it was kind of like Sesame Street, but for older kids). On the show, there was a singing group of kids who were called the Short Circuits, and she was one of them.
She got her start long before then. I used to watch her as a child on the electric company with Morgan Freeman and Rita Moreno. She was on the show in a band called short circuit.
Irene was/is a TRIPLE THREAT....Singing, Dancing and Acting!!! She played the title character, Sparkle Williams in "SPARKLE," a film set in Harlem during the late 1950s and early 1960s about a female singing group!!!For the 1980 movie "Fame" Irene was originally cast as a dancer, but when producers David Da Silva and Alan Marshall and screenwriter Christopher Gore heard her voice, they re-wrote the role of Coco Hernandez. As Coco Hernandez, she sang both the title song "Fame" and the film's other single, "Out Here on My Own."
Irene Cara is one of my favorite singers. I loved EVERY song she has sung. I used to dance in my living room pretending to be her. You should watch the YT version of this song with clips of the movie, “Fame”.
She got the energy from dancing, singing and acting. She could also write lyrics. I remember going to the drive-in to watch 'Fame' when the movie came out.
First of all. That whole Fame Soundtrack was dope! Check out Out Here On My own sung by Irene Cara, I Sing The Body Electric sung by the cast. We played that cassette tape out until it busted lol.
Ah to be 21 and talented as she was(and is)she is special and not surprisingly she won an Oscar 3 yrs.later for singing a song for the movie Flashdance.
The first time I saw Irene Cara was on What’s Happening in the 1970’s. She will be always remembered by me as a beautiful, young and confident woman. What a feeling is another great song by her.
What an incredible performer, singer, dancer! You can feel her energy, Powerful! Sadly that no longer exist today. She was Classy, Beautiful, Sexy, Talented, and could really sing without being rounchy. What a special soul. God bless her.
She was a great dancer as well as a great singer...She could dance with the best of them back in the day...She was in two great movies in the 70`s-" Sparkle " and " Aaron Loves Angela ".
This song is such a confidence song. My girls and I will song this song at the top of our lungs, especially when it gets to the bit about remembering our name.
Theme from the movie Fame, Irene co wrote the song, which won multiple awards. She did it again a couple years later with the theme to the Movie Flashdance which did even better,
She was cast in the 80s classic FAME, and played Coco dancer/singer looking for bright lights in New York City. She sang this song and more on the sound track of this movie, and you can see why, she had a voice on her. I am just surprised she never made her singing pay off after this movie, as this was a blockbuster hit everyone played and knew who she was back then.
This was the theme song for a movie about a performing arts school. Debbie Allen was probably the most iconic actor, she played a dance instructor. She is a famous choreographer, actress, director, etc. The rest of the cast, other than a few professors, were young up and coming talents. Irene Cara was a stand out star, she could sing, dance, and act. RIP Irene, I loved your voice! ❤❤❤
She was such a big star in the early 80's and my first memory of her was in a children's show on PBS called "The Electric Company " - some of you might remember that. Morgan Freeman got his start there and Rita Moreno was in it too . But Irene Cara - so adorable, beautiful, talented. I wonder whatever happened to her. PLEASE watch the movie "Fame" that this is the theme song for. She stars in it - it's really well done.
Hello SHAWN & Mel. Irene Cara has ballad “ANYONE CAN SEE”. Released in 1982. Search “Anyone Can See” (Live in Japan 1985). 💕👌🏽.Love your show. My 1st & only reaction channel!! 🔥
Irene Cara is a puertorican singer and dancer. She is also a choreographer. She was the main character of the movie called Fame, as the song. The movie was so famous than they made the television series. Later she did another dancing movie called Flash Dance and she sang the theme called What a feeling and you reacted to that one. She is pure energy.
I've known this song forever, but never knew who it was, until the early 2000's when my bf who was 5 years older than me looked at me like I was crazy and told me "That's Irene Cara. She's rock'n'roll." That was his highest compliment to any artist, regardless of genre. Many rock groups were not rock'n'roll, but Irene Cara was.
You should see the movie "FAME!" It's a classic!! The TV show was FIRE 🔥 too! Never missed it. Janet Jackson was on it for awhile before she made it big.
They adopted the movie to TV and it was a series for a number of years. Some of the same actors in the movie where in the TV series also. It was one of my favorite TV shows at the time!😊

youth that's where she got the energy lol.all that bouncing around reminded me of a young sarah jessica oarker in footloose! irene also did the theme song for 80's movie flashdance called what a feeling. there is a brill scene in the movie fame were a kid whose doing music his dad who drives a yellow cab pulls up outside the school with speakers mounted on his cab and plays this song all the kids come out and stop traffic by dancing in the street.
Rip To Actress & Singer Irene Cara Escabera aka Coco from the original Fame Movie!!! My Condolences & Sympathies Go To The Escabera Fam. A New Yorker that made her Cuban/Puerto Rico Pride to the top. Thank U Irene!!! U Will Be Missed But, Ur Music Will Continue To Move On For A Long Time. God Bless The Escabera Fam!!!
Irene Cara was Fame the movie and this is the title song from that movie! Irene also has a big hit with the theme song for the movie, Flashdance, called What A Feeling!❤️❤️
That movie was huge. I was headed to 16 years old and loved it. Didn't make it to New York til I was 22 but when I saw this movie I knew I had to get there one day.
Irene Cara was quite a singer, songwriter (Flashdance-What a Feeling co-writer), Dancer, and actress who won a Grammy in 1980 for 'Best Pop Vocals' from the movie and song "Fame" ...Please consider reacting to Taylor Dane..." I'll Always Love You" or "Love Will Lead You Back" or "Love Will Be Your Shelter" Great voice and seriously under-rated songbird. I love and enjoy your channel, so genuine. Hagn
getting through childhood was a lot like drowning on my own in the deep end but when Irene Cara came out with this stuff.. I was a pre-teen, and in an extreme amount of emotional pain. Physically, I was strong, and took dance lessons.. although I experienced really nasty bigotry with ballet dancing and dancers. I naturally gravitated towards the arts, although I was never given a chance to develop. Irene Cara made me dream, of the future I wanted for myself, and I had never done that before. So for me, Irene is responsible for waking me up emotionally to the good stuff.. she saved my soul. xo RIP Irene.. I will always love you.

It was normal to playback but pretend it was live back then, so this is probably not really live. Cordless mics didn't exist at the time. That's how she had the energy to dance. I loved this song!!! I went to the Fame concert in Holland (Europe) when I was 10 and I will never ever forget the energy!!!
Great reaction👏👏 Please see the movie "FAME" based on her hit single. Irene also starred in the movie and had other hits. Young lady was multi-talented. Singer, actress and song-writer❤❤🧡🧡
I loved that movie I still do. I loved the TV show. And I loved being told that I looked like Nicole from the fame TV show when I was young.. rest in peace to Gene Anthony Ray who played Leroy. Such a great dancer and a great actor. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes, Jan! Great song suggestion!
I'm 60 and do dance classes 5 hours a week lol
We all were young at one time. The vast majority of us weren't exactly a dynamic ball of energy even then. 😂
I had the soundtrack to "Fame" and, yes, "Out There on My Own" is excellent!

Irene Cara became one of my favorites singers when Fame came out. She was so talented and beautiful.
