The Genesis of a Handtool Cabinet

- When I finally finished my Signature Handtool Cabinet after years of conceptualizing and building, by fits and starts, my wife made me promise to make a big deal out of it.
I’d like to think this video fulfills that promise.
Some stats:
Built on & off over the course of 3 years, 5 months.
39 Hand-cut dovetail joints
6 legs on 2 sled feet
4 drawers and 4 doors
8 hinges (including 2 handmade)
Holding 117 individual tools (plus accessories) as of this video's release
Approximately 183cm tall by 86cm wide by 41.5 deep (6' x 33 7/8" x 16 3/8")
This is not a piece of furniture, this is a piece of art. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

I have watched this video a number of times. It has me stuck, for insperation. I have always loved Bugatti cars, so I feel, must use the some of the blue that was famously used on his son Ettore's cars.
So you have set me a task, to find Buggati works. Furniture and design. It helps that my brother lives in France.

Great attention to detail, very inspiring. Would love to see a breakdown of the tools you have collected and the reason you chose that particular tool.
I thought about going through individual parts of the chest, talking about the individual tools and how they fit into their holders, if there's enough interest. We're +1 on that idea!

Oh my goodness this is as beautiful as it is useful. Now that you have a son build a smaller one for his little wooden tools. One day when you pass on to him you your tools contained in your work of art he can return to you his little boy tools for you to give to your grandson.
Because I haven’t been able to settle on a tool chest and because my shop has just an 80” ceiling, I’ve kicked the can down the road regarding the investment in the lumber to build what I’m sure I want in a standing chest (wall mount isn’t really an option in my mind). What I’ve done instead is to work out of a Dutch Tool Chest; admittedly it larger than most people build in the DTC. I do like how I can roll it too other areas but never have (kind of like a feature on a car/tool/phone you’ll never use), but it’s big enough to hold it all including halves and rounds.
I’m thinking these two things: that I’ll continue to establish my work flow regarding how/where tools nest/their retention and also that my handtool collection has stabilized quite well enough that it won’t grow by much more. I think the second bit about the tool collection informed by the first means I’m maybe about ready to tackle the challenge. I’ll build in cherry primarily; if I could pick only one wood to work with it’d be maple, but if I could only pick one wood to live with it’d be cherry. So cherry it will be. Thank you for your inspiration and I still have the page corner turned when your chest was first featured and I think I’ve pinned it multiple different times to boards on Pinterest too 😂. So neat to have a face/voice to go with it.

I agree with you about Bugatti. I knew about him and his brother Ettore from the car world but when I first ran across his furniture I was blown away.
I had a friend that played base guitar when he was younger. I said it must be nice to be a musician, to which he replied "There are musicians and players". He said muscians compose original music where he himself just played other peoples music. You are undoubtedly a musician in that regard. Beautiful!

That is 100’s of thousands of woodworkers dream, to ACTUALLY build a tool case as lovely as yours. A labour of love - it shows!
I had an idea toward the end, as people do, lol.
The section that contains your spoke shaves etc, could be recessed further, the 1/4 circle extended to a full circle that rotates, enabling storage for four times as many tools and add some of that ‘hidden trickery’ that some tool cabinets are known for.

I never wanted a floor chest because Being tall I never wanted to have to stoop down to grab my tools. I felt a hanging wall chest was the way to go. I cant wait to move into a house to build one.

I actually did leave room for more tools in the middle and right hand drawers in the base, but years after I finished the cabinet, there's still a lot of room in there.

The base is a beautiful piece. More detail on that would be appreciated. I have my upper built (not yet fitted out) and realized; as you did, that it can’t be wall hung. Been puzzling over a base, and how to fasten the two together.
This cabinet slides, from the back, into an area with 45 degree chamfered trim on three sides. It's kind of like a cross between a french cleat and the shoe mount on a camera.

I'm about to start building a work trailer for making my art and small furniture works at fairs and festivals. One of the things I've been wanting make for a very long time - also inspired by Studley and Bugatti - is a decorative tool cabinet like this.
However, due to the portable nature of my lifestyle and my goals for my art work, my version will be on casters. I plan on doing a second version that's a rolling Jewelers bench for the jewelry and watch making and repair portion of the business.

What's the brand of crane neck chisels you have? Not sure if I'm naming it correctly.
They're crank neck chisels from Buck Bros that I refinished the handles on. They're not great but I make them work. I much prefer the crank neck style to straight pairing chisels.

May I ask you where you took inspiration to create that saw till? I swear to God that Sawyer Design have one following the same design details.
There have been (much) simpler versions of this design for years, and (good eye, btw) Nick Sawyer did one like it after asking it if I was cool with that (I was).

I have binged your cabinet yesterday and your ideas and design are marvelous. I was astonished to see someone bringing up Bugatti and thus Art Noveau. "Art for Art's sake" has never been so rare in our days.
I've long felt Carlo Bugatti has been miscategorized as Art Nouveau. The soft, sweeping, organic tendril-like curves of Art Nouveau are conspicuously absent from most of his work. There are, of course, curves in Bugatti's work but they're different. That plus the nature of the surface decorations he used land him squarely in the Aesthetic Movement (in my opinion) which, not coincidentally, is what the saying "Art for Art's Sake" is most often associated with.
This looks fantastic! Once I've finally fought my way to the end of my list of things to make for other people I'm finally going to have the time to make my own tool cabinet and this has given me some real inspiration. I like how you've used the space in the saw till for storing spare irons, very clever.
