    I don't to get caught up in a debate about "who sang it best." There is something about this song that wrenches the best performance out of whoever's singing it.

    Michael Ball's version of this song is the best. His voice is so powerful and I have listened to the other singers do this song but they are not so powerful or heartfelt and the high notes everyone refers to are just grating. Michael's version is a perfect beautiful rendition of this song.

    This is a beautiful testimony of Jesus! I don't cry easily but only Jesus can bring me to tears! Through my tears I realize how much he loves me and how much I love him! God had the harder role than his son because he could not interfere with his son's death! If he had interrupted the process leading to his death at any time and stopped his accusers from dragging him away the whole human race would die in their sin! I still do not fully comprehend his love for us but I am still learning! I love you Jesus!

    I only want to say
    If there is a way
    Take this cap away from me
    For I don't want to taste it's poison
    Feel it burn me
    I have changed
    I'm not as sure
    As when we started
    Then I was inspired
    Now I'm sad and tired
    Listen surely I've exceeded
    Expectations tried for three years
    Seems like thirty
    Could you ask as much
    From any other man
    But if I die
    See the saga through
    And do the things you ask of me
    Let them hate me hit me hurt me
    Nail me to their tree
    I'd wanna know
    I'd wanna know my God
    I'd wanna know
    I'd wanna know my God
    I'd wanna see
    I'd wanna see my God
    I'd wanna see
    I'd wanna see my God
    Why I should die
    Would I be more noticed
    Than I ever was before
    Would the things I've said and done
    Matter any more
    I'd have to know
    I'd have to know my Lord
    I'd have to know
    I'd have to know my Lord
    I'd have to see
    I'd have to see my Lord
    I'd have to see
    I'd have to see my Lord
    If I die what will be my reward
    If I die what will be my reward
    I'd have to know
    I'd have to know my Lord
    I'd have to know
    I'd have to know my Lord
    Why should I die
    Wooh Why should I die
    Can you show me now
    That would not be killed in vain
    Show me just a little
    Of your omnipresent brain
    Show me there's a reason
    For your wantin me to die
    You're far too keen on where
    And how and not so hot on why
    Allright I'll die
    Wow Just just watch me die
    See how see how I die
    See how I die
    Then I was inspired
    Now I'm sad and tired
    After all I've tried for three years
    Seems like ninety
    Why then amiscared to finish
    What I started
    What you started
    I didn't start it
    God thy will is hard
    But you hold every card
    I will drink your cup of poison
    Nail me to your cross
    And break me
    Bleed me beat me
    Kill me take me now
    Before I change my mind

    yes he did, but Jesus is God, and he was God incarnate then, Just because he said those words doesn't mean he didn't choose togo to the cross, it just means he had doubts and was scared, thats allowed because even though he was God he was also fully human at the same time. He chose the cross, right from the very begining, when he created the world.

    • @btoal2001
      @btoal2001 7 лет назад +1

      Tanson family I realize I'm very late to the party here and I'm sorry about that but you seem to have the story of the Bible a bit mixed up. Jesus isn't God. Where do you get that? He is the son of God, but not God himself. And these lyrics fit perfectly into the New Testament where Jesus prayed and was scared. Tim Rice captures this moment beautifully. You are clearly no theologian and probably shouldn't comment on matters you have no real knowledge of

  • @millieeved
    @millieeved 11 лет назад +6

    Jesus Christ Superstar the musical is a secular retelling of the story of the Bible. It's not a religious musical, it's just based on the story of Christ. It's not surprising, then, that the lyrics don't reflect what you think or know Jesus was thinking. It's supposed to challenge our perception of Jesus, his motives, his strength and his position in this world.

    • @btoal2001
      @btoal2001 7 лет назад +1

      Emily D how exactly is a musical based on the last 7 days of Jesus' life not a religious story?

    • @ginjaababe
      @ginjaababe 6 лет назад +3

      Yes it is not biblically correct but true it gives a beautiful perspective of what Jesus might have felt being in such a crazy world where no one understood why he was there! The disciple thought they knew but after his death they discovered they knew nothing of him to begin with!History is interesting is it not?

  • @CathieSoli
    @CathieSoli 8 лет назад +9

    I disagree with Emily D. It is in Matthew, Mark, and Luke that Jesus said "take this cup from me." So thus, one can conclude from that what he could have been feeling. He was human as well as divine. Besides, when I first heard it as a teen, it made Jesus more accessible to me. I kept hearing in church that god was hellfire and brimstone on one hand and an all loving father on the other. I couldn't relate to the latter. Then I heard JC Superstar and that changed. I could see where god was an all loving father. No I am no longer a Christian. JC Superstar brought relevance to a lot of folks back then. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the secular side of things.

    • @JoeyArmstrong2800
      @JoeyArmstrong2800 7 лет назад +3

      I can recall way back in 1970 when JCS first came out as an album. It was considered very, very controversial by religious leaders, on par with Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ". However, there was one Anglican Priest's review who endorsed it, saying "It's attempting to take Jesus out of the stained glass window and back into people's hearts again".

      joey, other than its gruesomeness and portrayal of the Jewish characters, was the Passion of Christ especially controversial in religious circles? I remember tour buses leaving from churches to go watch it in cinemas.
      For properly controversial, we need to go to Scorsese’s Last Temptation of Christ - although it was by all accounts a turkey.
      (Ironically enough Defoe is said to be one of the few actors - JSS excepted - to depict Christ whose career improved after)

    Michael Ball has an incredible voice - deep, rich, powerful...just lovely. But...sadly he doesn't do this song justice. Without the high notes (which is almost a trademark of this song), it lacks something.
    Steve Balsamo is by far the best at singing this song because he not only has the power but he reaches the top notes with ease. He also has a passion that nobody else has ever shown...and he does tears too!
    As for the comment about 'cock rock and hair metal are more or less dead'...what a load of BS! It will never die...thank goodness.

    • @Katpiratefan275
      @Katpiratefan275 7 лет назад +7

      I liked both the original with Steve Balsamo, and I like this version. Both men play to their strengths and give very emotional performances. Ball keeps it deep and powerful while Balsamo hits the high notes while still having power. But I still prefer Ball's cover because this is the version I first heard as a kid and left a lasting impression. Balsamo does indeed own Gethsemane, but I'm not a huge fan of the high notes.
      It's a matter of preference. To each his own.

      @lwhager 8 лет назад +5

      I think you have to separate pure musical voices (such as Michael Ball, who--to my knowledge--is singing the song but did not play JC) vs heavy rock vocal choices. Steve Balsamo has an amazing falsetto scream, but it's outdated in the context of the musical. This was contextual to the original '70s performances and isn't needed now that cock rock and hair metal are more or less dead. Yes, movie original Ted Neeley still makes my hair stand on end and your Steve Balsamo can do the same, but Michael Ball makes my blood run hot and cold at once.

      Steve Balsamo used movement to aid his conveyance of emotion, For Michael to stand Rooted and still emmant such emotion and power into this performance is stunning, Steve Balsamo was very good though.

    Love Michael Ball, what an amazing voice, but (you knew there was a but coming didn't you?) as a Christian i have to say i don't like the lyrics to this song. Jesus Christ chose to go to the cross, because we've all done things wrong, made mistakes, he died for those mistakes. He did it because he loes us. If he hadn't paid for our mistakes and things we've done wrong, we would have to pay for them.

      JC Lopez Well damn, if that's average, then I would love to see you belt out those notes as well as sing his incredibly low noise without any shaky voices. Say you don't like it and I'll respect that, but like it or not, he is an incredibly talented singer

      Can you hit the last note at 3:32? Have you even listened to his performance in Les Mis or Sweeney Todd?

    • @lurkingfearproductions
      @lurkingfearproductions Год назад

      @@Girl-rj3qe yes I can hit the note, its a hard note to hit but you can train a singer to do so, I have trained to be able to hit this note and have the range. Not everyone has the range and its obvious Michael does not. The original song asks for this note but many singers just can't hit it and they end up changing it to something they can handle. Just facts.
