Who do you think sings the best version of Gethsemane? Let us know below!
Watch Ben Forster's version here: tiny.cc/c9s4tz
Ian Gillan, original and best
Michael ball
Michael Ball... No doubts...
Ian Gillan, Extraordinary,. Michael Ball Outstanding and try this for a brilliant theatrical version ruclips.net/video/_QozXX7Ndrk/видео.html
Ted Neeley. No competition.
Honestly, Gethsemane is the most beautiful song ever written for a musical
Couldn't agree more. I have never grown bored of this piece. Good shout!
Couldn’t agree more
Yes but, no 😂
Let me know if there are any other really emotional beautiful songs. I also like Music of the Night (but not as much as Gethsemane).
From non-musicals, I can recommend Lara Fabian's version of Je Suis Malade.
I'M ACTUALLY CRYING WOAH HE IS SO AMAZING LIKE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS I HAVE EVER HEARD I do miss that high note but this gave me pure frozen in place vibes and chills
Linda Thetford 100% agreed!
Have you listened/watched one of Steve Balsamo’s versions? In my opinion untouchable! Ted Neeley was great too!
@@Stargazer-px7fw yes I have! OMG he was amazing he's one of my favorites! ❤️
I always cry when Michael sings, but this one rips my insides to pieces! his voice is so beautiful but his skill is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Naw .... sorry. Doesn't compare to the original sound track.
No range here for the sonicsphere!
I personally love this version. It gives me goosebumps, compared to the ones with the high pitch tones.
Chivonne McColl I agree with you. I absolutely love Michael Ball’s rendition, he puts so much emotion into his singing.
Absolutely, especially the end from when the spotlight shines on him....it's 80 in here & I have goosebumps after watching 3 times♥️💯
I watched this performance so thought I would watch JCS - hated it lol. Love Michael Ball!
You mean the screaming. Yes this is much better. Although not fussed on the lighting. His nose is well lit but it’s hard to see the expression in his eyes which is a pity.
The Ben Forster version is spine tingling even with the falsetto. Most disintegrate into screaming and make me wince. Ben's makes me go through the agony, despair, pain etc...and isn't like a party trick.
Michael Ball's rendition is the best ever version.
No.
My favorite version of this piece. You don’t have to scream to show emotion and character like the others mentioned in the comments. Bravo Michael Ball.
Falsetto is not scream and you do HAVE TO "scream" to show emotion if you feel like screaming... That's the definition of showing emotion... Absolutely agree that this is a wonderful version but, just in my opinion, not the best... Not even close. King regards.
@@anamariasantos100 tbh, I prefer this over the high notes. Sounds more realistic to me with what is happening and how Jesus is supposed to be
it’s ted neeley all the way for this song fgs
This is honestly my favorite version too. I feel like Michael Ball conveys Jesus' doubt and anger more than other actors do.
This was my favourite until I heard ian gillan's version. The song was written for him. The "scream" was meant to be that way. It also fits the rest of the musical. As a stand alone, it doesn't matter as much
My personal opinion is that this version has more emotion throughout the performance, than the versions with the high notes, may be it is because it is Michael Ball who always gives his all to his performances.
The arrangement is great, and while I think this song isnt the same without those high notes, I'm still happy to hear this take.
My thoughts exactly
I believe this is how it’s written originally
yeah, its great because, well because its michael ball. But without the higher notes it misses a bit of the intensity I think.
It's was written without them and Ian Gillan improvised it thus setting the standard for people to follow but I agree - I like it 10000 times more with the G5. Only version I like without it is John Farnham's
You yyyy
As others have said the emotion needed for this song Michael Ball gets just right, plus he has a wonderful voice. Love him.
This always has me in tears . For what was . What is today . First saw the film in 1973 with mom and dad , sis . All these years later now Feb 2024 in sobs practically as all the changes in my own life . Parents gone now , strong faith , believe . The songs , the lyrics always get me deep . So deep .
I saw him singing this when my husband and had just started dating. I sobbed at his performance, my husband thought something was wrong, it still makes me cry even now. The passion and feeling he puts into it makes it so powerful.
Michael can do no wrong in my eyes this is an amazing version love love love
The awesome Michael Ball!!! No One can come close!!!!
The first Michael Ball video and the first version of Gethsemane I watched almost a month ago. Was amazed by the power of his voice and incredible talent. A new fan was born. From that day on, I kept listening and watching him everyday. Having daily dose of Michael Ball. 😊
Such an amazing performance. I just came from seeing the live Jesus Christ Superstar 50 yr. Anniversary Show at the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco and came right home and played this version. It's just the best ever. I can't believe how emotional I still get when I listen to Michael sing this. A great show tonight and a great performance by Michael all those years ago. A wonderful combination.
“I didn’t start this” was beautiful
Mr. Ball's interpretation of this song is marvelous and has only gotten better throughout the years❣️
Don’t be shy drop the whole show
Chelsea Klein they already did it was one of the first ones they had on a few weeks back, it was the concert one with mel c and tim minchin
@Cannibal Teddy the 2012 with with Ben and Tim and the 2019 West End show at the Barbican are the best versions.
They did a few weeks ago!
Yeah pls I missed it
I wouldn't mind watching it again
I think they will do Joseph again next
Colm Wilkinson and this rendition are my two favorite performances.
They are both on the same level, just different styles and capabilities; both are superb!
I've been listening to musicals all my life and every single time I return to JCS. It's one of the few musicals where I will sing every song from beginning to end. Still as relevant today as it was then when it first premiered. Thank you ALW for this gift.
EXACTLY!!!!!♥️♥️♥️
Legend did a pretty good version in the live, but this ..
I heard Michael Ball perform Gethsemane multiple times. But his is by far the best one.
I think about this video every now and then, and every time I rewatch it it’s as if I’m watching it for the first time. Michael Ball’s version of this song is absolutely unmatched. This video got me into Jesus Christ Superstar and it is now and STILL my favorite musical, and always will be. Live laugh love.
I've been lucky to have seen Michael Ball numerous times live in concert performing this song. So amazing to hear it live!❤👏
After Gillan's and Neeley's interpretations, the standards for this song are set very high
This is fabulous, but i havnt heard anyone as passionate as Neeley
Glenn Carter is definitely up there
@@durellgriffin3399 Didn't hear his version, gonna do it soon
Steve Balsamic vinegars version is the best in my humble opinion
@@ostrich_dog I'm sure you can find it on RUclips he was on the 2000 dvd
Such Spectacular singer is Michael!!! Wonderful and Sublime interpretation! Thanks for sharing!!!
How is Micheal so amazing, like wow every time I watch this video, he just blows me away!
EXHILARATING ! Loved this heartfelt rendition, Wonderful voice ! Fantastic stage presence! Star quality !
What a masterpiece Jesus Christ Superstar!
I just love this song, it’s so good for showing off what a singer is made of.
Wow. Chills. Goosebumps. What a voice
What a man.
Simply fabulous. Simply brilliant version, Perfect adaptation to this vocalist. Updated and modern. Timeless.
Thanking your sharing this version. I have watched this show since my youth.
I really love this version of the song and I think Michael did a great job with it!!
I would agree that Ted Neely got it better emotionally, but this guy is amazing, also this is a performance where he sang at least three other songs, from different musicals, all show-stoppers.
Fantastic!! Bally at his best.. Spine tingling ❤️
So much passion & power. Beautiful performance. What a voice.!!!!!
Oh Wow....what a wonderful, powerful performance. Michael is totally in character here, so perfectly sung and acted
LYRICS:
Jesus:
I only want to say
If there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I don't want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me,
I have changed I'm not as sure
As when we started
Then I was inspired
Now I'm sad and tired
Listen surely I've exceeded
Expectations
Tried for three years
Seems like thirty
Could you ask as much
From any other man?
But if I die
See the saga through
And do the things you ask of me
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me
Nail me to their tree
I'd want to know
I'd want to know my God
I'd want to know
I'd want to know my God
I'd want to see
I'd want to see my God
I'd want to see
I'd want to see my God
Why I should die
Would I be more noticed
Than I ever was before?
Would the things I've said and done
Matter any more?
I'd have to know
I'd have to know my Lord
I'd have to know
I'd have to know my Lord
I'd have to see
I'd have to see my Lord
I'd have to see
I'd have to see my Lord
If I die what will be my reward?
If I die what will be my reward?
I'd have to know
I'd have to know my Lord
I'd have to know
I'd have to know my Lord
Why, why should I die?
Oh, why should I die?
Can you show me now
That I would not be killed in vain?
Show me just a little
Of your omnipresent brain
Show me there's a reason
For your wanting me to die
You're far too keen on where and how
But not so hot on why
Alright I'll die!
Just watch me die!
See how, see how I die!
Oh, just watch me die!
Then I was inspired
Now I'm sad and tired
After all I've tried for three years
Seems like ninety
Why then am I scared
To finish what I started
What you started
I didn't start it
God thy will is hard
But you hold every card
I will drink your cup of poison
Nail me to your cross and break me
Bleed me, beat me
Kill me, take me now
Before I change my mind
I love Michael Ball.
Absolutely beautiful voice - but Neeley’s version
brings me to tears every single time
Masterpiece. Without any scream!..
This piece is absolutely amazing!! It shows the brilliant skills this man has. Super human use of his Fabulous
voice!!!
I have always loved his version, makes my toes curl!
What a beautiful interpretation! I think that there is only one Ted Neeley, but Michael Ball is my favorite singer, ever, so I am really between a rock and a hard place if asked to choose! Fortunately, we have both and we do not have to choose!
I love this version pitch wise but still think Ben Forster version was so passionate and shows that difficultly Jesus is going through with that decision.
Excellent.
Love this and I have always loved Michael Ball. Great rendition...
I prefer this version... I think sometimes acting gets in the way of the song, MB shows here you don't need to add dramatics and long pauses to show emotion in the song
the acting is THE POINT. it isn't just a song. it's supposed to portray a man who is on the verge of death. there is no pain here. there is NO emotion. yes, the singer here does well to hit his notes academically. he is a good singer. but he is not jesus here.
I think its the difference between a song (beautifully sung though it is) and a performance. He isn't playing the role of Jesus here, so comparisons with Belsano, Forster etc aren't really fair...
It certainly deserved more recognition than that little bit of watery applause at the end IMHO!
Er ist der beste! Mit Herz und Seele und glaubhaft ❤️ Ich liebe ihn allein nur für dieses Lied ❤️Danke dafür das man so mit Herz und Seele dabei ist !!!!!!!
I can't pick one/ I love everything he does. He is espicially good at Andrew Lloyd Weber's works.
very few people can bring the house down and not even take a step.
This is my favourite ever Michael Ball song. Saw him singing it live a couple of years ago. He got a massive standing ovation. x
Absolutely stunning performance.
Love this song. Doesn’t matter who sings it. Gives a little bit of insight into the mental agony that the real Jesus Christ must’ve felt before his arrest. Just hope he didn’t give God earache in the process.
JCS introduced me to the musicals when I was a child. I love it
OMG!! Me too. It was the first musical I ever saw ♡
Same for me and I literally sunk into the musical world since then!
This is my absolute favorite version of this song❤. When he sings the part, "God thy will is hard. But you hold every card. I will drink your cup of poison nail me to your cross and break me..." gets me so hard in the feels😢. Michael Ball is just amazing!
this will always be one of the best version's I have ever heard that last big note amazing everytime I listen to him sing it I say wow each time
The Master giving 100%! 🎭
2023 Michael Ball does it for me. Goosebumps.
Wow, Michael Ball continues to astonish me
This is how old and never gets tired. The best rock opera ever......ever........ever. There is none better.
Michael Balls rendition is fabulous
incredible how a rock singer without the years of professional training still is superior
It’s the clarity and richness combined with the power of his voice I love most.
He is amazing beyond belief! I saw Michael Ball perform this live. I wept. So glad to have this video to watch… probably daily
I wish I could upvote this video myriad times
I have seen this live, just wish it had been Michael Ball.
A beautiful rendition by Michael Ball. With regards to the falsetto , it's a rock musical , and the part that Jesus ' sings is a wailing of despair. So that part of the musical is part of the show .
Michael Ball, hands down
Michael Crawford sang this on a Royal Variety Performance many years ago. It was the first time I heard the song and it is the best version in my opinion. X
This is such an iconic song and he doesn't even attempt to hit the first iconic high note that the song is so well known for. He's got a nice enough voice but he doesn't even come close to doing this song justice! Ted Neeley is the absolute best followed by a singer that not everybody knows of (but should) named Dan Vasc. I know a lot of people prefer
Ian Gillan, but not me!
There is a truthfulness that resonates in this interpretation and
Mr. Ball's voice translates with gtest emotion.
Love his voice
My personal favourite version xx
That! is how it is supposed to be done! Love Michael Ball.
Simply brilliant singing. Simply brilliant Webber composition....
Amazing truly wonderful voice ❤️🎶x
Michael Ball is the consummate artist and the greatest Theatre singer of all time. (Just my opinion) Whilst I love this arrangement, Steve Balsamo's rendition reduces me to tears even to this day.
Best version of this song. Michael Ball brings so much emotion into the song.
Try Steve Balsamo back in the 90s.
I really like this version of this song
Edit: something about his belts are really satisfying
When I listen to Ted Neely, I cry. It is impossible to sing at such a high level as Ted Neely or Gilan.
Когда я слушаю Теда Нили, я плачу. Невозможно петь на таком высоком уровне, как Тед Нили или Гилан.
I had a huge essay comparing my preferences, but my first exposure to JCS was when I was quite young with Ted Neeley and now that I've seen Michael Ball I have to say that in my insignificant opinion, they are both amazing. The settings were very different and the ages of the actors and their voices were too. Love them both! 🙂💗
Hands down this is the best interpretation ever!
The best ever!
For me he is the KING OF MUSICAL....What a powerful voice ...
Очень проникновенно, прямо в сердце. Голос потрясающий. Плачу
this is my favorite version ever i love michael he is so great
Amazing!
Michael Crawford's is excellent, too
Wow!
Such a moving song! I'd love to see the whole show.
Ufff!!! Impresionante también!! Maravilloso 👏👏👏
This is the interpretation of Getsamani that I like the most!
Wow! Amazing ❤
AWESOME
Love Michael Ball - fabulous at what he does. This song chokes me up every time but I ironically wasn’t “bawling” like every time Steve Balsamo sings it. Okay, bad pun, but still happy to see this version after I missed the airing of the concert.
for me the best ever .........................
Great voice!
this version is super heartbreaking and very well interpreted, my respects to Michael
