    The analogy I usually make (and the one Owen Ekblad gave me) is having a “vocabulary” of trick elements. When making an essay or novel, putting words together to make complex phrases and sentences, as well as understanding these words is made significantly easier by learning the nuances of the individual words themselves.

    • @thebrandonvu
      @thebrandonvu  3 года назад +2

      Yeah, I think that's a perfect analogy. The more words you know the easier it is to read and interpret new ones.

      Long words are made up of short words, just as long combos are made up of single elements!:)

    So when I learn new tricks I either do one of two things. I either create something myself, or I watch POV angle tutorials or demos! I think watching POV angle stuff is so much better because the way I see it is exactly what it would look like if I was doing it. I think it is easier to replicate elements if I see a trick done in that angel. I also think that coming up with new tricks yourself is more rewarding, and at the end you can say, " Yeah, I did that! That was all me!!" It is just a different feeling than just copying what someone else has already done. I usually take an element from another player and then use that element as inspiration to create a brand new trick!

      @thebrandonvu  3 года назад +2

      Yeah I'd agree too, there was actually a scene in this vlog where I go through a POV video of Takeshi, but I cut it because the audio cut out. Totally agree Katie.

    Screen capturing and watching frame by frame is something I've overlooked. Thanks for the suggestion! Helps allot. Im 32 now back when I used to compete 16 years ago I wish smartphones were around. Had the same issue struggled to learn other peoples tricks so the basic element to string manipulation analogy is good btw.

    It's refreshing to see how pros learn tricks and that things don't always work out right for them either. Otherwise you only see videos where everything is always perfect and error-free, which can be very frustrating for beginners.

  • @jeffbrownstain

    It all comes down to visualization.
    If you can imagine seeing the trick performed, then you can perform it.
    I wouldn't say I'm a good yoyoer or that I have much natural talent, but learning tricks has been mostly easy for me because I can see myself doing the proper movements before even stringing my yoyo to my hand.
    I learned my own unique method for doing a gyro flop after having only ever watched it done once or twice because I understood its mechanics.

    Brandon, keep up the great content. I’m a year in back to yoyoing after about 17 years. This is my addiction and your videos are some of the best out there! You’re truly awesome!! Fanboying aside, lol I have a question….
    Can you suggest a great bearing to use? I’ve tried many different bearings. 8 ball / 10 ball, centre Trac, concave, magic Yoyo, YYF, NSK, etc, the best I’ve found is NSK but it still doesn’t perform to the same level as I see sooo many pros using. I just don’t get the spin time I need. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks man!
    Travis

    • @thebrandonvu
      @thebrandonvu  3 года назад +2

      Hey Travis! First thing your Linkin Park cover of paper cut is lit HAHA. Second thing is if you've tried all those different bearings I don't think the "perfect bearing" is going to give you the spintime you need. I'd focus on becoming hyper efficient with your yoyo tricks, working on throwing harder and reducing the tilt to a minimum. Bearings have an effect to a point, but if you don't have your technique right, your yoyo will constantly die irrespective of the bearing.

    • @DisasterpieceTrav88
      @DisasterpieceTrav88 3 года назад +1

      @@thebrandonvu Thanks for the advice Brandon! I’ve been working a lot on my technique and it has been improving. I think a lot has to do with that and also the quality of the yoyo’s I’ve been using. Currently my main throw is a CZM8 with an NSK bearing. I bought it second hand and It was pretty dinged up, so it vibes like crazy. I’ve swapped the bearing to a few other yoyo’s I have, mostly Magic yoyo’s but I seem to get the same result. I can usually perform some simple wrist mount combos before the spin dies on the string. I’ll continue to work on my technique tho, and hopefully pick up my first bi-metal soon. I have lots of time to throw now….I broke my leg last month skateboarding. lol now that I can bare weight on it again with my air cast boot, all I’m doing is throwing my Yoyo. I’ll eventually toss this NSK into something else and hopefully pick up one of those super sweet Outlier 2’s when you release them. They are sooo sick looking!
      Cheers man! Thanks for reaching out!!! You rock!!!
      And Thanks for checking out my Linkin Park cover man, that’s awesome!! I posted that thing a while ago. I gotta get more guitar videos and other stuff on my channel soon.

    When learning new elements, I try to watch it frame by frame and break down exactly how all the physics works to make the element work. I also like recording myself in slow motion, so I can figure out exactly what I'm doing wrong. This allows you to discover for yourself small things that are extremely important to making the trick work, that the person in the tutorial might not even be conscious of.
    Since the yoyo is a gyroscope, it's also important to have a good understanding of gyroscopic precession, which is an extremely weird and unintuitive phenomenon when not explained well. However, this video does a great job: ruclips.net/video/n5bKzBZ7XuM/видео.html
