I have a house near the ocean that has these curtains. Instead of zippers they have grommets to hold then in place when down. The curtains were installed by the previous owner and I would saw they are about 15 years od. There are several problems that I have observed with them that you need to be aware of. 1. They shrink with time. This makes closing them difficult. 2. They yellow and can become stiff over time 3. With wind and rain they get dirty and are difficult to clean. 4 The ropes that pull them up eventually become worn and need to be replaced. This is not easy. 5. The pulleys are typically aluminum and they corrode and also need to be replaced. Again not easy. The curtains are effective when you are closing up the house in the winter. They are not overly practical to pull up and down in during the day, especially if you have a large porch.
I'd like to frame them in like screen to create a 3-season room. How thick must the vinyl be to hold in air-conditioning during hot/humid Florida summers? What type of vinyl will resist yellowing in the sunlight?
Invest in glass doors that open mechanically allowing basically the same amount of space...quality has its price. He Who buys cheap ends up buying 2 times.
What is the best way to heat such an enclosed space? We just put up vinyl curtains around our patio.
