- This is a review for outdoor curtains that I purchased on amazon for my patio. I compare them to Ikea curtains that I tried to DIY waterproof. I review these curtains, as well as the wash-in product to make the ikea curtains waterproof. I also needed to add weights to combat wind issues. I haven't figured out 100% how to stop these outdoor curtains from blowing all over the place. These outdoor curtains for my patio are also blackout curtains made out of polyester. The ikea curtains are cotton. There's various differences.
Many people have to deal with privacy issues or to block out the hot sun in the summer. I love spending time in my patio and these outdoor curtains solved both of those issues for me. At first, I didn't think I'd love blackout curtains, but in my subtropical weather, I believe it will be very helpful. My only hangup so far is the wind shifting them all over the place. That's gonna be the challenge over time. My hope is to give another review of these outdoor curtains a year out and see how they hold up, until then, I will have to wait and see. But.... so far, so good.
Overall, I would recommend these outdoor curtains for a patio, balcony or pergola -- so long as you understand the downfalls you may have with them. Make sure to share any tips you may have with the community in the comment section.

The product that I used for waterproofing the Ikea curtains did not really work in my case. I wouldn't dismiss that it might be great to be used to restore the life of weatherproof jackets and other garments. I don't recommend them for the Ikea curtains to make them waterproof outdoors. If you can attach to the bottom I would put a second curtain rod and slide it through the hem this way they would not flap in the wind. If you can another approach is to add grommets.
Actually, this is the solution I finally decided on. It's working like a charm. The key was having a very secure and good size rod cause our winds here in the coast can be strong.
I wish I could do that, but my pups run through our porch area when playing and might get tripped up? Or would they “figure it out” after one time? Can you tell I’m an overprotective dog mom? 😂
You can also run a rod through the bottom of the curtain hem for a weight close the siding in by sewing and you can also use beautiful waterproof shower curtains
Yes, this is def the best idea so I got me a rod from ikea. It promises to be the best solution. I also used those little rings at the bottom so it doesn’t create weird pleats and slides easily. Thanks for your input!

Glad I could help. I procrastinated for a while for the same reason. When I actually did it is when I learned. You know how it goes. Lowes is pretty awesome with legit returns so hopefully that eases your mind and your patio turns out amazing.
Buy some playsand ,places sand in small zip lock baggie, use three bags per curtain, one on each end and one in the middle, use a safety pin to keep the san bags from moving

I have a raised deck that is about 3.5 to 4 feet above ground level and that means it is subject to strong winds and, more importantly, blowing rain. In the past, I've used shower liners to help block the blowing rain. It works, but quite honestly, it's not an attractive solution. This year I've been on the hunt for something more visually appealing and was looking at the Amazon waterproof curtain selection. It never occurred to me the curtains would snag. Think I am going to have to break out the sewing machine and am give waterproof drop cloths a try.

i bought white fabric shower curtain liners and also bought extra so that i could add fabric to the lenght . I have been using the same curtains for three years now and they look like new. I have a wrought iron fence around my deck so I use fabric ties that I tie to the fence and then tie the curtains at the midway [point so that they do not blow in the wind.

I’m looking to do the same for my outdoor fireplace area. I have thought about putting a cvp pipe with sand or h2o to weight them from the wind... thanks for you info on weather proofing
I just ordered them because of length… for my screened porch in Ai Cal, I was wonder about putting weights on them, great video 😎
I tried the weights but the wind still shifted them, unless you can find something really heavy but idk if that would make them look weird. I finally did add another rod at the bottom and hooked them with those little rings that have hooks (they sell them at Walmart, Amazon, etc). That finally solved them problem. Hope that helps.
you can sew loops on the corners of the curtains and add self tapping hooks at various intervals along the bottom metal of the porch.. this way you can hook the bottoms to the loops but offer yourself different amount of opening widths for the curtains by having several hooks at different intervals

Yes, I first bought one of those cheap rods at Walmart for like $3 and the wind just laughed at me and blew that too. 😂🤣 so I definitely need something pretty sturdy. This wind and I keep fighting 🤨. Thank you!
I just ordered some curtains for my patio cover . I plan to use magnets that should adhere to the bottom part of my patio cover since it is aluminum. My other thought was to put some catches at the bottom and attach it to the frame of the patio cover. gonna see how the magnets do
The magnets didn’t work for me but we have so many storms the winds can get very strong. We are on a hurricane path area. I ended up having to install another rod at the bottom. I made another video but haven’t gotten around to posting it.
I put a round rod at the bottom. When placing the piece were your rod sets in put upside down...that will prevented the rod from coming out when windy. Hope this helps..worked for me

Try using a 1" pvc pipe for the bottom hem. I'm currently using pvc for my outdoor curtains and plan to try placing the pipe in the hem to prevent the curtain from blowing so hard.
I did end up using another pole at the bottom and also making sure it was secure because otherwise it would also shift too much. But it finally solved the problem, yes!!!

I was thinking maybe little bags of sand to keep the curtains more windproof since sand is so dense in weight
You could put a full length piece of chain in th bottom, and inset a few neodymium magnets at the base/bottom. strong magnets to hold.

I love these. I have a gazebo outdoors, bought magnetic screen to keep bugs out, but I have orange outdoor curtains that during winter I can't see out of 😭😭😭 what do you guys suggest?
Hi there! There are sheer curtains that you can try but they won’t block the sun as well. Of course you could also have a summer and winter pair. Some that block the sun for the scorching hot summer months and some that are a tad more sheer for the winter where a little sun is actually good. Is that what you mean?
Could you put sand bags in the hem? might help it be a little quieter!
You know I wonder too if I could make like a whole cylinder out of the fabric I cut and put sand in it to hold it in place. 🤔 kinda like the ones people use to prevent air from coming in the door (at the bottom). Thank you for the suggestion!
To avoid your curtain from blowing away..just buy metal chain from any D.I.Y stores and put it down inside the hem n this works great and stays equally along the curtains..

Velcro on each panel to keep them closed when open use tie backs to sway to keep them off the floor.

I wish I had this problem… don’t even have a porch! Ja… what about a curtain rod in the bottom, more of a stretched look… they would definitely not have “kiss the floor” kinda look!

Purchase some Jude rope tie each panel separately with the rope and then hang something heavy at the end and pull your fabric through the rope so that it’s not hanging on the floor. I hope you understand what I’m saying.

What about using shower curtains
That’s not a bad idea. My only problem with that was finding the right size, particularly for length. However, if you have some sewing skills you could unite two of them cleverly for sure. ☺️
What type of rod did you use?
Hi. I used a normal rod for interior spaces but I got one that would mount to the ceiling.
How did you actually attached the rods?
I used a drill and attached it with screws just as you would any other wall - on top there was wood. I ended up attaching rods as well on the bottom. I drilled the screws onto the metal at the bottom. Hope that clarifies things.

Where did you find your rods for your patio
Hi there! The rod used at the top was purchased at my local TjMaxx. (I took off the finials on each end). Later, based on everyone’s comments, I bought a second rod for the bottom to keep the curtains in place. That bottom rod is from IKEA . (That’s not shown on this video since it was an update I made after the filming of this video). Hope that helps!

You asked if anyone knows how to weatherproof fabric-I do. HERE IS HOW:
You can weather proof by taking a large black or white trash bag-1.) ADD A tube of weather proof door and window caulking. (you want the cheap 100% silicone) 2.) 1 quart of Mineral Spirits OR /VM&P NAPHTHA. Mix the 2 ingredients together for 5 minutes in the trash bag.
Add your curtains in the mixture until completely saturated. Place the whole bag in a plastic square bin like sterilite. Ring out excess liquid; like you would twist a wet towel…ringing it out in a downward spiral works best over your container with the trash bag opening hanging open down the sides of the container.(less mess) 3.) Hang your damp material to dry on your clothes line. Should dry within 24 hours.
Basically you want a 50/50 ratio of silicone caulking to Mineral Spirits or VM&P Naphtha . This works great on bedsheets (use as tarps), backpacks
and can be painted on cushions to weatherproof your patio cushions.

In your experiment you can shoot it with a garden hose and watch it bead off the material; looks like when you put Rain-X
On your car windshield and the water just beads up and rolls off.
The silicone is what waterproofs it and the mineral spirits evaporates out thus, creating a barrier.
What method did you use to put the curtain rod up? Do you have an aluminum framed porch structure? Thank you!
Hi there! It’s an aluminum cover plate but underneath there’s plywood to which I was able to attach as you would any other curtain rod. I was originally afraid I couldn’t do it but once I peeled off the aluminum i was able see there was plywood. Thank goodness!
Oh and by the way, at the bottom I ended up adding another rod after the video was made. That part is definitely aluminum. I was still able to use a drill and screws all the same. Hope that helps!

I definitely thought about that. Fortunately, after a couple attempts, I finally put another rod at the bottom with some hook rings. I probably should make an update video. I love how much everyone has been chipping in with ideas to help! Thank you! ☺️❤️

Yes, you can pick up colored chain at Lowes/Home Depot and sew them in the hem. You can also use the chain for tie backs.
