In my story, I replaced the village with planet, crooks with galactic smugglers and the dacoit with an imperial planetary leader.
And Sholay and Star Wars commercialized Bollywood and Hollywood respectively (arguably). Because after these movies both these industries started moving from artsy movies to big budget action commercial movies. Both these movies were panned by critics and everyone thought both these movies will become a box office bomb. But instead they became the highest grossing movie of their industries at that time. Both have western movie style. Both have a mix of emotions like Romance, comedy (quirky), over the top action, high octane special effects which the audience have never seen before and the universal emotion of friendship. Though Sholay is 2 years older, I think that George Lucas got some inspiration from Sholay in mixing some genres. Indian cinema was the 2nd biggest industry at that time so I'm pretty sure the movie makers around the world especially Hollywood might've seen the biggest hit from India. It is arguably the first masala movie ever made. So A New Hope and Sholay have a lot in common. They deserve this crossover kind of thing.

Lol as an Indian who's been in love with Star Wars since I was like 7, almost 3 decades ago, the concept of this video made me happy. One of the most understated Star Wars themes is Fatherhood, and this film clearly had elements of that as well.
So happy that our RRR, Telugu🔥 language film a.k.a Tollywood film, is entertaining this many people all over the world irrespective of language, culture, continents etc., You should have watched it in Theatres in original Telugu🔥 language with packed audience to get full entertainment out of it. I watched it 3 times in theatres. It's still running in the US & will be released in Japan in October.

9:20. “Let not the result be your motive…..”that’s the English translation. He is reciting the Geeta. 5000 yrs old. You do what you have to do. Your duty. Do not worry about the outcome. That’s not for you to ponder upon. Once you are in the right path, you cannot be inactive fearing the result. This is what Krishna tells the warrior Arjuna in the battle field of kurukshetra when Arjuna is disheartened that all his valor, knowledge of weaponry and might, will now have to be used in a war where he is fighting his own friends, family and teachers who have chosen the wrong side. Krishna tells him “you perform your duty as a king to your people. The result might be that you kill your own but that’s not your fault. Leave the result of this act to me. I (as the universal conscious) will take the responsibility”.
Am from India and a huge Rajamouli fan. I would've seen the Star Wars parallels. RRR could actually be a v interesting template for a good star wars story! Great analysis
Thank you for your support for good content movies. Few Hippocrates in India says it was not a good movie. I have watched it in theatre 8 times and watched another 2 times on OTT. Best theatrical experience of the year.
Yes maybe for Americans who were trapped inside their woken culture in their movie industry finds it extremely appealing to watch something completely different and rejuvenating . But for Indians RRR is one of the just above average good movie because of its over the top actions and story like this is very common in Indian movies so given that, I saw it as good movie but too over rated by Americans 😊 Mollywood and Kollywood been in that level for last 5 decades but still it’s not recognised. As more Telugu techs immigrants live in America, it’s unsurprisingly that Tollywood has widespread reaches there .
This is probably my favourite video on internet right now.....oh man as a die hard Star Wars fan, and being an absolute sucker for the mythic storytelling in the franchise....I always wanted a film where Indian myths were combined with realism to form contemporary Legends....And when RRR came out I was soooo happy and the first thing I said was..."I have not been this happy watching a movie other than A New Hope" and then here Star Wars explained is making this video to legitimate my every single claim is somewhat satisfactory...And the thumbnail immediately sent me in an alternate zone where I imagined Ram Charan as a Rebel Spy or an X wing Pilot and Jr. NTR running some animal training centre on Utapau in the place where Obi Wan got Boga!!!.....It would be the best thing ever
@@ravigurjar3107 ofc...they are Itihasa but bro I am not talking abt Ramayana and Mahabharata when I said Myths....I am talking about the Jataka Tales or things like the Sinhasan Battisi...or the various Sanskrit plays which form an integral part of Indian legends and mythology....They can be very well used to make a fantasy like Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time etc. What we got in RRR are homages to the two epics, and even though that's not what I wanted I was thoroughly pleased with it Mahabharata and Ramayana needs their own authentic and sincere adaptations which pay them there due respect and treat them more like history instead of some magical masala stories the daily soaps have made them into...which I guess we might get from SS Rajamouli's dream Mahabharata project ....so fingers crossed 🤞
9:19 In the original dialogue, Raju says the lines from Bhagavat Geeta Chapter 2 Verse 47: "Karmanye vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana, Ma Karmaphalaheturbhurma Te Sangostvakarmani" which translates to, "You have the right to work only but never to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction."
3:25, Load+Aim+Shoot. Many things are running in parallel in this scene. A father is ready to sacrifice himself for his country. A father giving his final lessons to his son (load, aim, shoot). A father asks for some final vows before leaving. A son, helping, sobbing, and getting ready to fulfil his father's promise.
As an Indian and a Star Wars fan I love this! Love this review so much! Thank you 'Star Wars Explained' for always bringing joy, fun and love in everything you do!
Oh, man, I absolutely love this video. I'm obsessed with this movie too, and it's been MONTHS since I watched this film. Have seen it only 3 times so far. Your analogies regarding Star Wars and RRR were so on point, and I think it's because both the stories took some inspiration from Hindu epics. RRR definitely did. And I found some elements in Star Wars as well. I totally agreed with you on Bheem, but will slightly disagree with you on Ram (Raju). I don't think he was completely lost in the darkness. The way his father died, the way he saw his mom, little brother, and other villagers die in front of him, would have affected him far too deeply, especially at the age this tragedy happened. He had made the toughest decision in killing his father... Anything else wouldn't even come close, would it? He was heavily conflicted. Torn between his loyalty to his country, promise to his father, and love for his best friend, he had to make the decisions that were no less than swallowing a mouthful of poison. He always had a good in him. It never went anywhere. Bheem's resolve made him understand things better, obviously, but he was always a good fellow, painfully broken. In the first watch, he comes across as a cruel, ruthless monster, but watching him more and more makes you see brokenness that's beneath surface. God, I love Ram so much. He's my comfort character but also heavily traumatized. Ram Charan did such a terrific job with him. Phenomenal performance from him.
Ram is shown as conflicted from the beginning. When he jumps into the crowd of 1000s, he is ferocious but takes care not to intentionally kill anyone. When he captures Bheem's accomplice, he tortures for info but lets him go once it is clear that he is certain to die due to the bite from the snake that his captive threw at him. He is torn about arresting Bheem and is unable to look him in the eyes. While fighting Bheem, he is careful to take is friend alive. During Bheem's flogging scene he sheds a tear while wiping blood from his face and takes care that the other more aggressive soldiers don't fatally injure his friend. He carefully whisks away an unconscious Bheem when the rioting starts. These show the immense strength of his character throughout the movie. Unlike western audiences, Indians knew from the beginning that this guy was playing the British for some reason. Also, Ram Charan would never be cast as an antagonist based on his previous work.
"Why doesn't every film end [with a song and dance number]?" Well, there was that time when a lot of animated films had a Dance Party Ending, but that's possibly not the same thing.
To all the Americans going crazy over RRR, you are in for a treat if you decide to dive deep into the world of Indian cinema. Here are some Great films that have had a huge impact on the Indian Audience. I hope you'll love it- 1. *3 Idiots* ( a story about 3 engineering students, and how they tackle the various hurdles coming their way, MASTERPIECE) 2. *Tumbbad* ( easily the most unique horror thriller India has ever put out, took 16 years for the vision to come into fruition) 3. *Ship of Theseus* ( the most mindful movie of India) 4. *Jallikattu* (excellent cinematography, and unique storytelling) 5. *Kumbalangi Nights * (just a simple story of 4 brothers going through life, and my ALL Time favourite movie ever) 6. *Taare Zameen par* ( story of a mentally challenged kid, and how the right way of education can change one's life) 7. *Padmavat* (remarkable direction and Grand production design) 8. *Sardar Udham* ( very realistic portrayal of a True story of revenge of an Indian man against a tyrannical British General, and Impeccable cinematography) 9. *Baahubali the beginning* & *Baahubali the Conclusion* (by the same director of RRR and so far the most successful movie in Indian cinema history, story about kings and heitage, lineage, revenge, etc. , BLOCKBUSTER)
Pls watch baahubali 1 and 2 by the same director, you will find similar parallels with star wars, especially the point of saving what you love and not fighting what you hate is the main crux of that movie

Although I agree with you that the overall structure of rrr is similar to star wars, the characters of ram and Bheem are heavily inspired from Hindu epics like ramayan and Mahabharata. Specially ram's character , who actually soars to be lord Ram himself in the climax.
It's about true Telugu freedom fighters not inspired from fanatsy epics. But their real characters are connected with epics because of SS Rajamouli 's obsession with those epics. That's it.
@@pokemonitishere202 I agree with everything except the word fantasy. You and I are not qualified enough to dismiss them as mere fiction. Call it literature which could indicate a mix of fiction and history.
I had been thinking I would probably watch this movie. From your review, I'm definitely going to watch this movie. I don't have Netflix, but I'm gonna figure out a way to watch this movie because of you!
Everything is perfect in your review .you should have also mentioned the Fire and Water concept ..they are such a brutal forces on its own and you can see so many references what happens if those forces meet each other .
Those words from ram while exercising is a quote by Sri Krishna in Bhagavat Geeta which gives more of a meaning of living in the presence and forgetting about the result.
i havent seen rrr fully yet (but i worked on it to some extent. am in media post production) but to most indians especially south indians, (this is telugu cinema aka tollywood among the 4 in total there) this was regular fare done on a bigger budget. (considering india has systematically produced thousands of films per year in multiple languages/industries within itself despite left in shambles and debt by the brits in 1947) it's lovely to see the globe falling in love with the mythology and craft of indian story telling and this with a telugu flavour to it which is easily the most colorful and "let me go bonkers" film industry of indian films. AND i subbed to you immediately with listening to ur accurate star wars interpretations (especially the metaphor of murican imperialism and vietcong rebellion which many conservative muricans like to shy away from). A true jedi, you are. I will now catch up on your other videos too. btw Rebels is my favorite star wars series yet and i loved hearing the parallels you used from it. for anyone new to the vocabulary, I'll give you a quick rundown of primary indian film industries (there are more regional ones based on different languages) industry name vs. western/english media term hindi films - mumbai/bombay - bollywood from its old name tamil films - tamil nadu - kollywood from kodambakam, an area of chennai which housed old film studios since 1920s (tamil films were the first indian films made) telugu films- andhra - tollywood Malayalam films - kerala - mollywood Bengali films - Bengal - (none) another old film industry which had oscar winning satyajit ray among others
If anyone wants to get more lore on this movie you can watch an animated movie called 'Ramayan' by some Japanese animation studio. Especially if you want to know more about the character and certain allegories that Rajamouli does.
The music also feels like a strong connection to Star Wars. It's bombastic, powerful, emotional, and makes heavy use of leitmotifs. M M Keeravani thanked John Williams at an award ceremony and called him his inspiration.
Star war characters are also inspired by Indian culture the word yoda is derived from a sanskrit word yodha and its reflects the ancient tell of mahabharata like yoda as Krishna
9:22 this line is from Srimad Bhagavad Gita. It's one of my favourite. My most favourite line is the last last line in Gita in which Lord Krishna says "Thus, I have explained to you this knowledge that is more secret than all secrets. Ponder over it deeply and then do with it what you will." Essentially telling us that we don't have to be all that Gods want us to be, it's up to us. Love the freedom and relief in that, when your God tells you that it's okay to be imperfect.
Also, the dance the number at the end of the movie is not a part of the movie. It’s used in a lot of Indian movies mostly light hearted ones where the actors only dressed up as the characters come over for a dance number. It’s more like the introductions at the end of a stage drama. But the songs do capture the essence of the story.
Not much off a spoiler you said , lol, tells the hole story from start to finish like a audio book, just glad l had seen it before your spoiler, this is a 3hr film that joggs on like it's only 1hr , needs watching on the big screen and twice , it's that good 👍

It is arguably the first masala movie ever made.
So A New Hope and Sholay have a lot in common. They deserve this crossover kind of thing.
And What about Basanti, Ghanno and Mehbooba?
This is literally what I do in my free time😅....I have done it with Sholay, Bahubali, Dhruva (the Ram Charan movie), and some re working of Gangs of Wasseypur
RRR is so amazing!!! I listen to the party dance song on Spotify all the time.
Not a single boring moment. What a masterpiece!
Yah RRR is a masterpiece. Can’t wait for the English reboot that butchers it.
Don't give anyone any ideas. Noooooooo.

I'm a year late, but only just watched this movie. Loved it so came to find reviews to see if I was alone (I'm not). But this is great as I'm a SW nerd too. Another link, which I'm sure you know - Lord Baylan 👌
As a Telugu guy myself, having witnessed the magic of S.S.Rajamouli over decades. this review comparing with Star Wars is best thing I have watched of all the reviews by foriegners. And it does have parallels to Star Wars, so it does make sense. Kudos to you! May the foRRRce be with you!!
I love this movie. My favorite film from 2022 so far and Ive seen 40+ new movies this year
Enjoying this new segment so much! Love discovering new stuff that capture the spirit of Star Wars, which is large in part what makes me love this franchise so much. 💖
i have to say i am so happy that i trusted you on this star wars explained🙏🏻
Lol as an Indian who's been in love with Star Wars since I was like 7, almost 3 decades ago, the concept of this video made me happy.
One of the most understated Star Wars themes is Fatherhood, and this film clearly had elements of that as well.
Seeing RRR in theaters tonight for special screening. Cant wait!
I really liked RRR but was blown with your review and comparison with SW, what a great vid!
We need a rerelease of this masterpiece 😍
Being from India and from the Telugu speaking states this has made my day🥹🥹
Well said Alex. I couldn’t agree more. This is such an incredible film and I can’t recommend it enough.
So happy that our RRR, Telugu🔥 language film a.k.a Tollywood film, is entertaining this many people all over the world irrespective of language, culture, continents etc.,
You should have watched it in Theatres in original Telugu🔥 language with packed audience to get full entertainment out of it.
I watched it 3 times in theatres. It's still running in the US & will be released in Japan in October.
I wish I could have, it wasn't playing in my area so Netflix was my only option. And Netflix doesn't have Telugu ☹️ it does for Bahubali though.
If you have any other suggestions, send them my way

This is such a great video, captures the star wars essence 🎉
I loved your review of RRR!! You’re spot on!! RRR represents the best of what Star Wars was.
I love the way you explained. I never watched star wars and now it is on my watchlist.
Raju is grey jedi
Don't say myth it is itihas means history. British wants us to believe our history as myth
What we got in RRR are homages to the two epics, and even though that's not what I wanted I was thoroughly pleased with it
Mahabharata and Ramayana needs their own authentic and sincere adaptations which pay them there due respect and treat them more like history instead of some magical masala stories the daily soaps have made them into...which I guess we might get from SS Rajamouli's dream Mahabharata project ....so fingers crossed 🤞
@@BATMAN-on5qd idk....a part of me doesn't want them to be force sensitive...but yeah both Ram Charan and Jr. NTR would look so cool with lightsabers
@@geetadhumane5793 true that's what our people want 🙏🙏🙏
9:19 In the original dialogue, Raju says the lines from Bhagavat Geeta Chapter 2 Verse 47: "Karmanye vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana, Ma Karmaphalaheturbhurma Te Sangostvakarmani" which translates to, "You have the right to work only but never to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction."
The passion in the words , just awesome 😍
The climax is not the song... It's just a promotional video shot... They added it like for fun.
OMG! I loved this movie too. Thank you for doing this video.
100% ✅️
I was 12 in 1977 and was TOTALLY Star Wars obsessed throughout the rest of the 70s and early 1980s. I totally agree with your assessment!
Good to see RRR getting popularity everywhere.indian cinema growing.
Dammit I never realized Andor is basically RRR
"Why doesn't every film end [with a song and dance number]?"
Well, there was that time when a lot of animated films had a Dance Party Ending, but that's possibly not the same thing.
Watch Eega (2012) from the se director. You'll definitely love it.
I watched this last night and oh my god this movie was fricking AMAZING! Like Jeremy Jahns says; this movie really is AWESOMETASTIC
Absolutely fantastic movie!
To all the Americans going crazy over RRR, you are in for a treat if you decide to dive deep into the world of Indian cinema. Here are some Great films that have had a huge impact on the Indian Audience. I hope you'll love it-
1. *3 Idiots* ( a story about 3 engineering students, and how they tackle the various hurdles coming their way, MASTERPIECE)
2. *Tumbbad* ( easily the most unique horror thriller India has ever put out, took 16 years for the vision to come into fruition)
3. *Ship of Theseus* ( the most mindful movie of India)
4. *Jallikattu* (excellent cinematography, and unique storytelling)
5. *Kumbalangi Nights * (just a simple story of 4 brothers going through life, and my ALL Time favourite movie ever)
6. *Taare Zameen par* ( story of a mentally challenged kid, and how the right way of education can change one's life)
7. *Padmavat* (remarkable direction and Grand production design)
8. *Sardar Udham* ( very realistic portrayal of a True story of revenge of an Indian man against a tyrannical British General, and Impeccable cinematography)
9. *Baahubali the beginning* & *Baahubali the Conclusion* (by the same director of RRR and so far the most successful movie in Indian cinema history, story about kings and heitage, lineage, revenge, etc. , BLOCKBUSTER)
Add in Bajirao Mastani.
@@quiet7632 Padmavat is enough to cover that genre I feel.
Eega for something crazy lol
Sorry to do this but taare zameen par is about a dyslexic kid and not mentally challenged.
A huge Star Wars fan from India. Thank you so much for this video. So amazingly presented. RRR has really broken barriers & became a global phenomenon
Pls watch baahubali 1 and 2 by the same director, you will find similar parallels with star wars, especially the point of saving what you love and not fighting what you hate is the main crux of that movie

you literally told the story like telling someone a movie script. Well done.
Although I agree with you that the overall structure of rrr is similar to star wars, the characters of ram and Bheem are heavily inspired from Hindu epics like ramayan and Mahabharata. Specially ram's character , who actually soars to be lord Ram himself in the climax.
emotions are universal and so is the story. You can replace the characters and you will get AVATAR movie...fighting against the colonial powers...

Those words from ram while exercising is a quote by Sri Krishna in Bhagavat Geeta which gives more of a meaning of living in the presence and forgetting about the result.

I Lovet Ajay Sir Ki Performance🔥🔥
i havent seen rrr fully yet (but i worked on it to some extent. am in media post production)
but to most indians especially south indians, (this is telugu cinema aka tollywood among the 4 in total there) this was regular fare done on a bigger budget. (considering india has systematically produced thousands of films per year in multiple languages/industries within itself despite left in shambles and debt by the brits in 1947)
it's lovely to see the globe falling in love with the mythology and craft of indian story telling and this with a telugu flavour to it which is easily the most colorful and "let me go bonkers" film industry of indian films.
AND i subbed to you immediately with listening to ur accurate star wars interpretations (especially the metaphor of murican imperialism and vietcong rebellion which many conservative muricans like to shy away from). A true jedi, you are.
I will now catch up on your other videos too. btw Rebels is my favorite star wars series yet and i loved hearing the parallels you used from it.
for anyone new to the vocabulary, I'll give you a quick rundown of primary indian film industries (there are more regional ones based on different languages)
industry name vs. western/english media term
hindi films - mumbai/bombay - bollywood from its old name
tamil films - tamil nadu - kollywood from kodambakam, an area of chennai which housed old film studios since 1920s (tamil films were the first indian films made)
telugu films- andhra - tollywood
Malayalam films - kerala - mollywood
Bengali films - Bengal - (none) another old film industry which had oscar winning satyajit ray among others
Madrasan 1st Indian movie was made by bollywood in 1913. Its called Raja Harishchandra.
Madrasis should stop spamming comments section.
If anyone wants to get more lore on this movie you can watch an animated movie called 'Ramayan' by some Japanese animation studio. Especially if you want to know more about the character and certain allegories that Rajamouli does.
After Endgame, it was only RRR where Indian theaters went bonkers!!!
This is possibly the best commentry I have seen on rrr. Thank you for the great video.
Yo! I saw this notification and clicked immediately. Thank you for covering this wonderful movie.
Awesome movie didnt even realize the star wars parallels
