- At Evo 2023, North American Tekken fans needed a champion.
Unsurprisingly, Pakistan, Japan, and Korea were dominating the game.
But , in a twist no one saw coming, in fourth place, there was Genghis Don - an American underdog, who played a weak character, and came out of nowhere to rep his region against the world's best.

Don and I both started competing around the same time and he’s been nothing but the nicest and most genuine person. 2 years ago we had a tornado come though Texas and Don reached out to me and other Texas FGC members to make sure we were all ok. He even went through my discord to check on everyone he didn’t have direct contact with. Dude is an amazing
person!

I love the underdog stories in the FGC. When it came to Lil Majin, Arslan Ash, Big Bird, and others in many more games is awesome to see and I love rooting for the underdog in any game really.
All we need is the finals full of americans and we'll shit ourselves.
Many players gain fame by pulling off upset or unexpected wins. Rangchu with his TWT 2018 win with Panda of all characters (Harada-sama himself was like "PANDA?! Really??"). Poongko tearing Daigo Umehara a new one at Evo 2011. HungryBox's amazing come-from-behind victory against Armada at Evo 2016. KaneBlueRiver's clutch win over Filipino Champ at Winter Brawl later that same year (especially considering the FT15 earlier that night). The list goes on and _will continue_ to go on as long as fighting games exist.

Now if you have a player thats better than the other player, its just that simple. The player was better. But that doesnt mean Panda is better Jin. Jin is better than Panda.
But no one plays Panda, so now the Panda player has a sort of advantage fighting. Unlike Jin even if you are good, everyone has fought against him and he has a traditional playstyle.
Not like Panda.
I’m telling you In fighting games it is so entertaining that you can have multiple heavy hitters no one knows about and once they show up to a major tournament they make some impressive stories

I watched it live in the crowd the arena was so hype such a good run from this guy.
This was a remarkable performance by Genghis Don. He is a new player and i first saw him at CEO 21 where he did so well but lost vs Khan's Geese i guess. Then at CB 23, he was a bit unlucky. The fact that he beat Meo IL twice speaks volumes about how good his Katrina is. Koreans have a nasty Katrina in Galgonge but Don showed that his Katrina might even be the best. Special performance

Katarina Alves is one of my favorite characters in Tekken. Love to see her achieve such amazing heights of success in tournaments. All while being played by a (relatively) inexperienced American. Genghis Don is truly an inspiration. His EVO run was quite the divine timing too since it was the last one with Tekken 7, and (unless she's Tekken 8 DLC) this is the only Tekken game in which Katarina appeared.

Man i remember seeing this on stream. Such a heart break finish, but it was such a hype run
I was watching it from a pro player's restream.
The streamer mentioned that Don didn't have good defence and made up for it with his offense,but once you eliminate that from his game plan he becomes easy pickings.
Watched that happened less than 15min later💔

You guys need to do One with Verix, a Nagoriyuki Player from Senegal
People can enter and be good just like he said. You can pick what ever character you like just like he said. Yes, practice and gain all the knowledge needed to get to that level. Some people have tendencies or even have a learning curve that may stop them from reaching that level. You need to work on that first and dismantle what ever it is keeping you from doing so. Learn everything you need that the game gives you to learn. You should be good to go from there.

Katarina is a very 50/50 guessing spamming high frame advantage character you don't need to be too technical for her just learn all the moves and spam for the best. her 50/50 high speed frame potential will carry you for the lack of skill you possesses just like ghirlanda in the last run of tekken 7 tournament he spams the hell out of the player.

Guys, when it comes to modern Tekken, you can definitely do it. Legacy is cool and all but you have to remember, they've dumb down the game a lot. Made it noob friendly and easy execution. We also didn't have all this knowledge back then. I mean, Zaibatsu was around for the people that wanted it but there wasn't all the videos and punishment help. Much less strategy videos. Take advantage. All the pros already did all the work for you. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Enjoy the game. Learn the game and add your own spice to it. You don't have to copy and paste everything, yeah the fundamentals, yes. But add your own flavor to it. You can definitely do it. We haven't seen the best Tekken players yet. But you have to put in the work. And dont over complicate it. You don't need to know all the frame data and every detail about the game. A good SS game and movement will help more than frame data. Good luck to all the ones who hope to make it big one day. And remember, you don't have to be the best ever. There's still room for you if you make it exciting. Or if you have a good underdog story or whatever interesting story you may have.
