I use chopped bananas from the garden as fish food to buffer the potassium levels. I also use the peels in a mineralizing tank since peels have more potassium than the edible banana fruit.

hey mate, good to see an update i hope yourself and b are both doing well. jack looks as if he is starting to get bigger. any news on the house move yet? looking forward to the next system. cheers.
Still need to see a financial advisor before we get too serious about approaching banks. We are researching particular areas that interest us to see what's available which I think is a smart move. We know a few folks that bought with the heart & not their heads so have a fairly strict criteria. Cheers mate.
Are you in Australia? Pumps I like are Jabeo & Aqua Zonic. They should be available in other countries as well. For pH & Temp testing gear I'd recommend Hanna or Bluelab. The API fresh water master test kit is also a recommended buy & should be available in most countries.
Hello Rob. Thank you for sharing. The 1000 liters you used, was it based on total water Volume in the system or just the water volume in the fish tank? How often should we add potassium? Thank you
The FT is 1000L & the sump, filters & beds hold roughly 600L more at that time so that's why I used 1600L 👍 I'll be adding it in as kelp once I can source a bulk supply of it. It will be added every second week then I'll monitor the system for any deficiencies.
I'm thinking every 2 weeks for the next month until I can afford some more Kelp Mark. Trying to buy in bulk to save some coin down the road. ;) Once I have the kelp I'll be dosing the system up every second week with a little.
Why add the solution directly into the beds? Since the water goes everywhere, wouldn’t it have been easier to add the solution into a tank, downstream of the fish?
Lined galvanised tanks are OK but a straight gal can cause issues with the fish. I have seen someone lose all their fish for no reason after about 4 months. It was suggested by a professional they queried that it was probably zinc poisoning. This page may help you out some. zipgrow.com/worried-that-a-galvanized-tank-might-kill-your-fish/
Would it make sense to set up the system so that it runs as a hydro system in the winter, and then transitions to aquaponics once the fish feed rate is sufficient? I have only ever run indoor systems at this point and so am not sure how much translates to the larger scale outdoors, but I basically treat it as a heavily stocked aquarium. I figure out the base water mix that gets me to 4-6 degrees of carbonate hardness above the input tap water using potassium bicarbonate, then add up a broad micro nutrient supplement (csmb or other) until there is an additional 2-4 degrees of general hardness, then supplement iron in the recommended amounts. The system gets ~25% weekly water change with the runoff going to the potted plants, and I daily feed enough to maintain 40-80ppm nitrate throughout the week (slowly climbs until water change). Seems to work well for herbs and leafy greens. Just wish the iron did not discolor the water since i use an ornamental fish tank. Sounds more complicated than it is. Once you figure out the amount to add only need to confirm it seasonally as tap water changes
Many folks in cooler regions will depopulate the fish from the system over winter. Many shutting the plant side down due to snow & freezing temps as well. Have you tried using DTPA iron? It's available up to around 7.4 & doesn't discolor the water.
When you cull your fish, do you do all of them at once? When you run low of fish how do you cycle in new baby fish? Would it be good to start growing fish in a separate tank close to when you are planning to cull the fish?
I take them out in small batches. I've found that the beds build up a nutrient bank over time so there's generally plenty of nitrogen available for the plants to keep the beds going but it does help to supplement the other nutrients that may be lacking. Our last system was set up with 2 tanks but due to renovating & space constraints I only have one on the go at the moment. I do have a small standby bio & tank I can use as a quarantine/fingerling tank if needed.
Have you tried a soapy spray? Not good to get a lot in the system water so I spot spray the plants where I see the aphids. This video may have some ideas that can help, ruclips.net/video/cQDA1ZLz_xI/видео.html
Jack eating his broccoli is adorable 🥰! Have a good one!
He also loves the bok choy leaves as well 🤣🤣
Have a top one yourself Jennifer. 😁👍

I would love a list of all supplies links or brands of pumps and other things used.

Thanks for the update Rob.
How long till you will re dose the system ?

I like to add it where it's needed. Doesn't hurt to also do a general check of the flow rate while you're at the beds as well. 👍👍

Hi Rob. Love your videos I am thinking of starting one but can you use a galvanised tank for a fish tank. James

Hey, i just put seaweed fertilizer into the system but now my water turns black is it normal?
Hi Rick & sorry I missed this. Yes it is normal but clears up in a few days with no ill effects. 👍
Did you purchase it from me?
