- Iron in Aquaponics | Deficiencies Testing & Chelated Iron
G'Day Folks. In this clip I show you what an iron deficient plant looks like & talk about the types of iron supplements you can add to the system to fix the deficiency.
I also demonstrate a basic iron test kit I recently purchased then walk you through an equation that will help you to maintain iron in the system at a specific level.
Hope you enjoyed the clip & your systems are booming.🐟 🌱🍅
Cheers all,
Rob

Cheers all & have a top one. 😊
Rob
There are a few factors in the subject . One plan I found which successfully combines these is the Fast Track Grower (check it out on google) without a doubt the no.1 blueprint that I've heard of. look at the amazing information .
I learn every time I watch your videos! Thank you Rob!
Glad it helped some Joe.
great video Rob, it would be nice to see more videos talking about which minerals are needed and signs of deficiency in the plants
Hope to get to that at some stage Stephen.
Sorry it took so long to reply mate.
Cheers.
Hey Rob,
Been lurking here for awhile and just wanted to say thanks for your work in making these very informative vids. I've been doing aquaponics for nearly 10 years and am still learning things everyday. Today I made my first venturi based partly on your design. Your ability to present information clearly without cluttered language is fantastic!
Mike
Hi Mike & am glad you find the clips helpful Mate.
Are you here in Oz or overseas?
Cheers.
Rob Bob's Backyard Farm & Aquaponics , hey Rob. I'm out in Phoenix Arizona. Crafted two more venturi today getting ready to welcome about 100 tilapia this coming weekend. Love doing this! Spent 12 hours out in my system today and loved every minute of it
Sounds like a fun day mate. 👍 Have a mate we'll be seeing this weekend that comes from Arizona. She came to her senses & moved south to marry an Aussie though. 😉 I have a feeling she doesn't miss the heat at all.
Cheers mate.
Nice job explaining the calculation. ;-)
Hi Rob & thanks. Was going to mention the levels you run yours at but left it too late to contact you for clarification & permission.
Cheers mate & have a top one.
Lots of great info in this video! Looks like you got the iron issue under control. I liked the pitcher of the white on the leaves. I was able to show my son. Trying to teach him as I learn. :) Thanks for sharing :)
I also got this test kit a few weeks ago.
I think it will be a lot better than waiting for signs of deficiency and adding a heap, rather adding a little often.
👍 It will take the guess work out & only take a few minutes to do I figure Andrew.
Hope your new systems going well mate.
Thanks for the gallon conversion
Any time!😁👍
Good day Rob from Rob Bob's backyard Farm and aquaponics !! great advice and information about testing for iron levels in the aquaponics system and how to calculate how much you needed to add !! Thanks for sharing
Interesting Rob! A great lesson in science (and maths)! Cheers :)
Very interesting information as always, Rob! Cheers!
Thanks Patrick. I think your slip was a little more thorough than mine :).
Cheers mate & have a top one.
Bloody love your channel rob!! I started my own garden and compost and had my first harvest ever last day (rocket) and mmm love the gardening life :)))
That's great to hear WIV. 👍👍
Hope to be setting a day aside here so I can hook into a few jobs around the patch.
Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🍅🌿
I do enjoy your information and how you present them . thank you and have a great one .
Thanks Kenneth & have a great one yourself.
Cheers mate.
cheeky fish stole a kiss right at the end
I love that shot 😀 I had another where a few were trying to eat something stuck to the housing that was a crack up but lost it in a hard drive somewhere. 😕
Cheers Azza & have atop one.
Better living through good chemistry. Good one Rob well done.
From a retired industrial chemist.
Hi Peter & thanks mate. 👍
Do you have a system on the go?
Cheers.
Everything is set up apart from the bell siphon ( I need to find some time to assemble it as per your video :) its a small 1000L ibc system, a start.
Thank you very much for sharing the knowledge.
You really should write a book on the subject, I would be the first to buy it.
Nice one Peter. I'm sure you'll get hooked after it's set up & your growing your own like a lot of us have. 😉
A few folks have asked about that. Might do a few info sheets but am not sure about a book.
Cheers mate & hope the build goes well.
Awesome, thanks for that review and clear explanation of the ''how to'' dose the Fe in our systems :)
Thanks for a great clip Rob.
No problem Martin. Hope it's helped you out some mate. 👍
Cheers.
Would love to see you do the potassium one as well. And yes I hate the red water. But I have to use all this I bought first.
Hey Benjamin. Been looking for a suitable potassium test as I'm sure that is also a bit deficient in the system.
When I find a suitable one I'll post a clip on it if it's accurate enough.
Cheers mate.
Gd-ay Rob cheers thank you for the conversions
Very good presentation and information
Thanks Fahad.
Happy Growing.
Thanks Rob.
Looking forward to the calcium aquaponics video rob, I've got some tomatoes that look like they could use a boost. (Ive used some eggshells but I'm not sure how my fish feel about it)
Thanks,
Chris.
Hope to do one looking at calcium in the future CH. 👍
Sorry for taking so long to respond.
Cheers.
Gdayy Rob, Love your videos they very informative. Keep it up.
At the risk of asking a gross question, hemoglobin (blood) is chelated iron. I knew a physician who treated his roses with expired blood. Is blood ever used in other plant-culture systems?
Tony Blake blood and bone makes a great Buffett for beneficial microbes
Have never heard of anyone using it in aquaponics. My guess is that there may be issues with disease transference if bad blood was used.
Cheers.
Well to be blunt, using piranas with fresh meat feed will be better than blood as they have traces of iron in their waste.
Thanks again, Rob :)
Cheers Edward. 👍
G'DAY thanks for the info it will help out my strawberries a bunch.
Glad to help.
Happy growing.
Congratulations on reaching 100k.
Thanks Vaughn 👍🙂
Still a bit hard to believe.
Cheers & all the best.
Great video once again! Thank you!
Hope it comes in handy 👍
Doing great man!
Cheers DB
i think you have just made this a nice video for Homeschoolers to see how they can use aquaponics as their Maths and Science teehee
😀 I think trying to explain concepts to the kids may of helped a bit. 😉👍
Hey Rob,
Are you only going to stock an iron test kit or others as well?
Blessings Gerowyn
Hi Again Gerowyn. 🙂
I am hoping to have some in a couple of weeks as I have had folks ask where they can source them from. If all goes well it will be this brand & I may look at stocking some for other elements as well if there is a demand.
Will be buying a bulk amount of the DTPA iron as well for my own use & selling off a bit to those chasing it.
Hope all's well & happy with you & yours.
Rob.
Thanks for the Greta explanation!
No problem Ivan & hope it helps you out some.
Cheers & have a top one.
Sure it helps! I love your videos and the way you share your knowledge, experience and practice, thank you very much
Hi Rob. Love your videos. Afaik fe deficiency is non interveinal yellowing on the youngest growth. Your mature leaves are chlorotic which is more likely magnesium deficiency?
I didn't treat with magnesium yet the symptoms subsided so am fairly sure the issue was an iron deficiency. I showed some examples at about 1:25 into the clip.
Cheers.
Rob,
How much of the eco seaweed did you use in your system.... Love watching your achievements
Hi Joe.
I use about a table spoon under every bed inlet about once a month to add potassium.
Cheers.
Where do enter the chelated iron into the system? The fish tank or the grow bed(s)?
I add it in the grow beds.
Rob where did you get your shirt, I love it.
I'm wearing it today as it happens. Has a few holes in it now though. 😉
Unfortunately the folks that made them closed up shop a number of years back Michelle.
They were called "Root & Ramble".
Hi Rob, thanks for the info. I have been running my Aquaponics setup for a few years now and coincidentally the yellowing described in this video is just appearing. I had been putting my earth worm "Juice" into the beds occasionally and hadnt done so for a while. I wonder if there is a reasonable supply of iron in the worm juice? Cheers,
Jeff
There may be a small amount in there depending on what the worms have been feeding on Jeff. Did you end up adding iron or just keep using the juice?
Sorry I missed your comment too mate.?
Cheers.
hi Rob, thank you for sharing this video, i want to ask about the iron. there is other alternative about the iron or i mean there is the way i can make it beside to buy the iron. sory if my english is bad. thank you .
Not that I know of sorry. I have seen some folks say they're going to chelate their own iron but haven't seen them post any results.
Bro which chelate fertilizer u used?? And eddha will come in yellow or red colour.
I used the DTPA Iron Chelate 👍
Is there a link for the iron chelate you used in this video?
The link in the description. 😉 bit.ly/AquaIron
Happy growing Ricardo.
If your system was already at 1.5ppm and then you calculated how much was for 2ppm and added it then you would have 3.5ppm or did i miss something? Any issue with too much iron? As always great content thanks.
Hey OBP. at about the 8:56 mark I mention I'm going to assume that there's no iron in the system for the example. Thought it would be better to work from scratch for some so they can get their head around it. I do know folks more experienced than myself that run up at 4ppm with no issues if that helps any.
Glad you liked the clip & have a top one.
Hi Rob, do you still sell these iron testers. Cheers David Hughes
Hi David. I don't sell them but you can order them from these folks.
www.aquagardening.com.au/aquasonic-iron-test-kit/?
I might stock them in the future once I get the storeroom set up when we move home.
Cheers mate
Hi Rob, what brand is your Iron test kit
It's put out by Aquasonic here in Australia Rustico.
www.aquasonic.com.au/TK530/Iron-Test-Kit/pd.php
Am looking at stocking some down the line if all goes well. 😉
Does the redness in the EDDHA hurt the fish?
Not that I've heard Jonathan.
Cheers mate.
Hi Rob, thanks for the vids mate. I'm over here in the states, and we can't get jade or silver perch here. Do you have any info on the subject or do you know of a similar fish other than tilapia we can get here?
Hi there IJAFT. I'm not 100% sure but will ask around. What state are you in & what's the climate like in your area? I know some have restrictions on the fish you can use & your climate will come into play a bit as well.
Hope the clips are helping you with a few ideas as well. 👍
Cheers.
Where did you get the iron test kit from?
Hi mate. Here's the links from the description.
Australians can buy Iron Test kits here ► bit.ly/AquaIronTest
& FE DTPA Iron Here ► bit.ly/AquaIron
Americans can find Iron test kits, Iron additives along with aquaponic & gardening goods on our Amazon Influencer page ► www.amazon.com/shop/bnbob01
Cheers & have a top one.
Can aquarium laterite provide a constant supply?
You possibly could Edward but I have no idea on the amount needed. I'd think it would vary from deposit to deposit. but really don't know a lot about it myself.
Would be fine for smaller set ups though I think. 👍
Cheers.
Is this affect the fishes in water tank
It's perfectly fine for the fish. 👍👍
Cheers mate.
I love your videos
Hi & thanks :)
Have a top one.
just leave a railroad spike in the grow beds? :P (rofl. never mind, you said it at 2:30)
😂
Cheers mate. 👍
Hey Rob, a quick question about adding the chelate into the system, my system isn't split flow it's one loop from the sump and back, I have 2x media bed that are fed from a filter and 2 DWC beds, would it be better for me to add the iron into the filter so it gets to all my plants or would that result in the iron being held in the filter? I'm pretty new to supplemented nutrients. cheers 👍
No one said anything about a pop quiz today! Some one pass the aspirins, please.
😀 Wasn't that bad I hope Harry. 😉
Hope all's well with you mate.
Thank you for the great effort that is being done by Mr. Rob. I have a question about how much the price of this product is and I want a picture of the product to buy it. I have a problem in yellowing the plants.
This is where I bought it from Samou.
aquagardening.com.au/dtpa-iron-chelate-food-grade-powdered-nutrient/?
Hope that helps some.
why don't you use just 11.6% of chelated iron for 2mg/ liter of water, why you must 2/11.6 ?
hey rob i have a new aquaponic system, how do i get the ph down or what do you suggest
Sorry I missed this Jeris. Did you get the pH under control in the end?
Hope the system's running smoothly.
Hi Rob, is the 3000L = to FT or FT plus ST and grow beds please?
Our system had 3000L between the fish tanks filters & sumptank.
Gday mate!
Howdy Eli. 👍😁
@@RobsAquaponics Loving the content mate!
this chelated iron cost a ton! atleast for smaller system.
Certainly does unless you can get a bulk discount & share it around with friends or store it for later use.
Happy growing Ammar.
why not use potassium chloride? it's probably far cheaper
Doesn't have the other elements. I've seen it recommended as a foliar spray & know folks use it to help guard against brown blood disease/nitrite poisoning. . I'm not sure how continual dosing the system water with it may do to the chloride levels over time. Would like to know if you have any knowledge on the chloride side. 👍
Cheers & have a top one.
6:42 2 mg * 100/11.6 = 17.24 mg
Yep, I left out the % sign explanation in the clip. Trying to make the explanation as possible for those that use a basic calculator & don't know math.
Will be adding the correct formula when I hop on the computer later tonight. I thought I had previously when I was pulled up on it but apparently I didn't.
Cheers.
Do mealworms give the needed nutrients if fed to the fish? I'm a tight bastard, well, self imposed poor bastard, and i dont want to buy additives, especially man made shit.
Good videos by the way, really well explained.
Hey Keith. They will help to a point but there would be a few nutrients that would be lacking for the fish I think. I did see a paper ages ago that looked into the nutritional content of different insects but cant find the link in my bookmarks sorry. Black soldier flies are another great feed source for some fish as well if you have them where you live.
Cheers mate.
First to comment
It's pronounced Key-late not chee-late, hard to take advice from someone who cant even say the word properly
😀
Then go elsewhere mate 👍😂
No skin off my illiterate nose 😉
Getting tricky bruh
Might help a few folks but the tbsp or 2 of iron per month will suit most folks ;)
Cheers.
How long does the water stay red
Ours doesn't go red at all using the Fe DTPA . Have never used the EDDHA that's responsible for the red but I'd say it would depend on the amount added, volume of system & types of beds (media or raft) used.
EDHHA in my experience is the best Fe for aquaponics, especially when you are running a little bit higher pH (7-7.5). The red color stays looong. If you go for 0.25mmg/lt it take like 2-3 months - exactly the time when you need to add more :) So.. that's the downside .. cherry water but accumulation is The best at higher pH.
