Hey man you are a role model for sure. Thanks for all the tips and advice, and mostly the encouragement. People need to consume less and produce more. Get rid of polluting supply chains.
Rob my friend awesome video . I have had small losses in my system here in michigan USA. Always do water test that's for sure the first thing to do . I have also had tilapia get swim bladder . Rare . But yea I sucks loosing a fish or multiple . Where I'm at no one does what we do and they don't understand it . But fish are our livestock and we spend lots of time to make them happy and do what's best for them . Maybe this chat would be a good idea for a video for the page to help other growers to not be discouraged. Aquaculture and aquaponics is so rare the masses don't get it . Our fish are our livestock and loosing even one we feel bad like we did something wrong . But hey great video as always
Thanks SWA&A. 👍 I don't get the mindset of folks that say "they're just fish" but go on to pamper the chickens or sheep on their small holdings. Cheers & all the best.
I've probably lost 1 per system like this, but also stock a lot less than you do Rob. It can be a tad embarrassing when you discover it when someone comes around for some one-on-one training. 😣
Rob thank you for the content! I am an Agriculture teacher here in America I use your videos in my classroom for instructional material as well as in my free time. Your clips are a great teaching tool and an even better refresher for myself. Hope all is well! Thanks again!
Great video, shows what to look for and that sometimes you just don’t know. On a funny side note. I use the term “ par for the course “ which I picked up from my dad and nobody seems to know it. Great to hear it used, cheers mate
I’ve had 3 fish die. One death remains a mystery. The first one was right after I got the fish which had been in transit for a couple of days. It didn’t try to hide when I transferred them from the cooler used in transport, to their tank. It obviously didn’t handle the transportation well enough. That winter, my second fish died when the water temperature dropped below 5C, which is well into their lower temperature limit. Both these fish were at the smaller size of the school. The third fish was well over a year old. Again it was one of the smaller fish, about 130 grams while the bigger ones might be approaching 400 grams (a visual approximation). I still don’t have a clue to it’s demise, but the remaining 32 fish (from the initial fish count -3 mortalities) all seem to be doing well. I have a submersible camera, but it’s always recording too dark, showing the fish looking healthy. I do have to be careful about turning on lights or walking to fast across where the sun is shining on the tank. I can then hear them bumping again the walls. Might have been what did the last little guy in. So, remember, don’t startle the fish! Thanks for your videos. I did bury the little fry in beds for their nutrients for plants. Cheers 🍻
This one was one of the smaller ones as well looking at the underwater footage Joe. I've never had one of the larger ones jump. I cringe every time I hear them bump into the walls. I had a mate say that his fish did it much less once he installed a window into his tank. 🤔 Cheers mate & all the best.
Love your channel! I used to have a Jade perch fingerling back from my last year of high school as a class assignment on aquaponics. Had him for over 3 years and he pretty much grew up with me outside of school. Sadly he passed away not too long ago but looking into purchasing some more
The oldest I've heard of them growing in a tank is about 3 years Payton. Not 100% sure on how old they live out in the wild though. I'm looking at setting up a large aquarium with a few of the eel tailed catfish here. =hey take a bit longer to grow out & can pop them in the system once they out grow the glass tank.
@@RobsAquaponics thanks for the reply! And yes he outlived all the other perches I originally had. Every time he grew I upsized tanks to fit his size. Went through at least 4 different tank sizes

probably it had a revelation, rather than feeding the evil hooman, it committed seppuku in the hopes its fellow fish buddies do the same. However, its sacrifice is in vain, as the rest does not believe a single thing, hence, they will grow up plump and nice to be made a delicacy in the foreseeable future.
Not really a cold snap here in SE QLD but some of the southern states have been chilly. Water temp in our system has strayed just above the fish's base line for metabolising feed & no where near what would kill them.
I'm in jamaica and I've been searching amazon to find tanks to raise tilapia but I can't seen to find and..could u suggest where in the USA I can get these tanks to buy and also ship to me?
I'm not really sure where to point you sorry Carl. I think Ryan Chatterson's company may ship to Jamaica so it might be worth while getting in contact with them. www.aquaponicengineeringdesign.com/ I hope that helps some.
I switched to hydroponic only since it is too cold here in NoCal and was worried about the fish.....Do you have a rainwater catch system for your water? I use a 3000gal (11356.24liter) bladder that is enough for my small system for the year...
At the moment we don't have rain water tanks. We had intended to put some on the house after renovating but the focus for us at the moment is to save up a deposit for some acreage so I can expand on my aquaponics systems. 😁
@@RobsAquaponics nice, all the best rainwater catch systems seem to be from aussies...I'm urban so only can catch 11356.24 liters of rain water but gets me through the year...at least before latest climate change....
Does anybody have suggestions on where to get the best value explanded clay balls? I live in Cairns and will need about 1100L for 4 grow beds. We have a local volcanic rock that I've used in another system but it's really rough on your hands. Thank you for any input.
I can imagine that they sting you for the added freight mate. I don't know of anyone sorry. Have you looked around social media groups to see if anyone is getting rid of old systems?
I have a newbie question.... I have successfully cycled an ibc flip, with a single grow bed and I am about to order my fish. I am getting 2 more IBC's I will expand to 2 more grow beds and using one of the IBC as the fish tank. Turning original tank into a SUMP. Sooo, do I need to hold off on the fish and cycle the whole system again? If so any tips??
Hey LC. Will copy & paste my response from another video you posted on. 😉 Once the bacteria have colonised the system they will spread to the new beds. They will increase in numbers as their food source increases as well. 👍 I just wouldn't be adding a new load of mature fish in there though, adding a fresh batch of fingerling should be OK though. Hope that helps mate. Cheers.
One fish die ,the system is clean even the fish who's died look healthy, no worries . Pesticides are toxic to fish. Thank you for sharing your experience .
