  • I rant about the huge price increases to enthusiast cars caused by the very people who complain about it.

I've been wanting a miata as my first build to get into the car scene since I was 15 and didn't have the money. Now that i'm 21 and have the money I can't convince myself to pay 6-9k for a decent one 😵‍💫

The sad reality is, that in order to find a good deal on any enthusiast car, you'll have to either get super lucky or go door-knocking. The most common "good deals" I hear about are always people going and buying a car sitting in someone's driveway. Regular people own "enthusiast" cars; if you can put in the work to build relationships with them, you'll get them for great prices.

This is basic economics. Sellers will charge what buyers are willing to pay. I understand the frustration and also feel the inflationary hurt, but I wouldn't go as far as to try and convince a group to not celebrate something they collectively enjoy. These cars are also a limited resource. Theres a finite number of stock, unmolested Miatas out there. As more and more get LS swapped, shelled out to go racing, etc, the value of the remaining ones will necessarily increase.
Selfishly as well, the more we can sell ours for in the future, the better, right? Mine has already cost me far beyond the return I may get, but when I do sell, it will only be more towards my next project. And someone who values it at whatever price I can charge will get a clean Miata (clean body at least, that fucker ate two engines. Only one is my fault)

In the video I state it's not meant to dog on people for celebrating a car they enjoy. It's simply to point out that the main reason for those car prices increasing is because of the massive popularity spike of certain models, causing people to think they're worth more than they are or were at least.

@@revreign they're worth what people will pay for them. I know what you mean, in some ways I wish lots of car models hadn't gotten popular, or drifting hadn't taken hold and caused such a spike in value. But on the other hand, it also helps preserve them. Crashed, rusty muscle car shells used to get compacted into cubes at the scrap yard. Now, when someone pulls one out of a field it gets restored and put back on the road. That only happens because it makes financial sense to do so- not because it's "cooler" or more hyped up than it used to be.
Anyways. I'm a recent sub to your channel, really like what you've started and am incredibly jealous of what you have going on so far. I'm a few years older but can only dream of a shop like the one you're setting up with your buddies. Keep up the great work, excited to see what's coming!

Unfortunately the 90s and early 2000s produced the best enthusiast cars, and those are a limited resource. People decide to keep them for life, cars get wrecked, etc. As the number of cars goes down the price is just gonna keep going up because putting money into a 90s project is going to make a more sense than a new car to a lot of people.

Just buy and build the cars that arent over hyped. Thats what guys like sloppy mechanics and NIVLAC57 do. If the 2jz and barra cost too much, build a 4200, if the fox box mustang is to expensive, build a different fox chassis.
