The lady in red seems like that cool woman in your apartment building that will randomly bring you food cause she made too much, and who you invite in for coffee or tea just to listen to her talk about her life for hours!
Vic Wunder i lived in an apartment building a couple years ago as a teen, and this wonderful filipino lady would always bring me food when she made too much, it was the best part of living there
@@ashleyelisa4460 My mother did this whenever she knew college students were around. She was always impressed and wanted to show gratitude to the generation to succeed as it was an opportunity she never got, but is eternally grateful for where she is because of them and their freedom!
Kristopher Brewer most likely Russia, North Korea is Russia stronghold, it was stabilized in the Cold War, and South Korea is an American stronghold, China has little saying there.
Ducktective I don't like buzzfeed but I have to disagree, just because you hate them doesn't mean every single one of their videos suck. They have some good ones, you just have to look.
Nobody really said anything about the host. He did a really good job in my opinion, he still had his own personality and input, but he mainly drew out the character of each guest. Props to him!
America has an extremely large diversity of food types from all over the world. I have yet to try them all but have found so many I would gladly travel for to try again
As a fellow Texan, and one who smokes brisket, That look on her face when she took a bite of brisket....that was enough to make this Texas boy cry. And when she said she prefered NO SAUCE on her brisket....it made this Texas boy weep. She truly is.......AN HONORARY TEXAN!!
@@aaronpatterson2369 Don't know about that one man, and my dad is from KC. From Texas though, and the cowboys definitely suck. I will admit, I am a sucker for my dad's gates sauce burnt ends, though. Wyandotte BBQ ribs and fries are among my favorites I've ever had
As a proud American I hate to burst your bubble , "not everything is bigger in Texas". Lots of great things about Texas from what I have seen. BBQ is one of them.
It’s because they didn’t get the pulled pork from Texas. Even mainstream places like rudys makes some of the juiciest pulled pork man. My mouth is yeehawin just thinkin about it.
I'm assuming it's usually served already sauced, and they got it without sauce just for this video. I'm also assuming they only put a little sauce on their portion to be polite, when it's supposed to be slathered on. Just sayin
damn when the lady wearing the red shirt started talking about how north koreans can often be mistaken as bad people, it was kind of heart breaking. you just know she, and the others, have been through some serious shit.
Yeah, listening to her talk about when it is okay to be a cow was just inconceivable... Very moving video. I eat beef at least once per week (incoming heart attack RIP)
@@Ryokishine Beef once per week is considered less than average in America man. With the amount of cheap fast food we have, yeah, beef is eaten on average 3-4 times per week for the standard american. Mostly ground beef
ནꦎ༩꧞ꦫꦍ As an American, I believe it’s because we consume a lot of beef on average compared to other countries. If I drive 5 minutes from my house there is a McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Arby’s all located next to each other. We typically eat beef at the very least twice a week.
Her last line was the hope that the Koreas could be unified so that all could try BBQ. That's very profound and I also think I could listen to her all day. :)
When the lady at the end talked about wasting food and taking leftovers home, I completely get that. I feel terrible whenever I throw any food away. And I take the leftovers home as well. I don't give a shit if I'm at the nicest steakhouse on the planet, I am taking my damn leftovers home with me.
yeh same my family will take stuff home. even if we have just a tiny bit of something like rice after being at a chinese restaurant or a bit of sauce after being at an indian one, we always pack it up and then add it to a later meal :) never waste food bonus story: when i was in elementary school, my mom helped out with halfday classroom lunches. once she saw someone throw away a full untouched apple and got really upset and told me about it later and how inexplicably wasteful it was
On the rare occasion I order out, It usually takes me 3 meals to finish a dish. BTW I only eat in a restaurant about twice a year, as people that I eat with are commenting about how little I eat.
Taking leftovers home in America is common. People would more likely look at you as wasteful if you had left more than a few bites of food. That is why restaurants have so many to go boxes and bags. Take it home and eat it for dinner the next night. That is also something people don't understand about American portion sizes, we also like to take it home and have it for lunch or dinner the next day too :)
It's not just leftovers (which is common in South Korea too), but like literally everything. Korean cuisine has a lot of side dishes (banchan) and almost nobody takes that home, so that's why people looked at her crazy. It's not the same thing as putting a burger and fries in a to-go box.
So if someone had an unfinished steak that is ok to take home, but you're talking more about taking the free buns home too? Is that how I am understanding this? it actually is making me laugh, cause I can't help thinking about people who go to hotel rooms and take all the soaps and shampoos in the room with them too lol
have you ever eaten at a korean restaurant before? they usually give like a dozen small side dishes for free to eat with your meal, it'd be unusual to take them home since they're small.
No I haven't, there are not any places that are close to me, so I have had to cook my own korean food at home. However now that you mention it, I have seen the amount of side dishes sometimes, so I guess I understand how it is different. I still would probably throw it all in a box and take it home though LOL. Waste not want not ;)
You shouldn't be proud the US is an anomaly and the world doesn't not have the resources to replicate in the rest of the world your fattening farting way of life
@Dfg Sdfg I hear you but they weren't 300 hundred millions in a wasteful industrialized country, most of those peasant died relatively young for our standards and child dead was a common affliction, I can stock up more arguments against your peasant analogy but I think you can get the point
Geo Nif Gahaha you act as if your society is of perfection. Human behavior is a matter of circumstance, and I assure you any society being put in our position would likely be similar in nature. Just imagine your country as diverse as the US culturally and ethnically, these problem of obesity, opposing parties, flawed democracy, power projection, etc... is nearly because they were either given the opportunity, or happened to be the ones where it most likely would have happened. Gotta remember we citizens of the states are from Europeans. And those Europeans absolutely fucked over the native population and have done so much blasphemy ever since the beginning of civilization. So if you are trying to compare, you are just embarrassing yourself. Comparing populations is a nasty and irresponsible thing to do. Don’t think you are any better then us because you don’t have x problem or such, we are all equal in the general sense of humanity. But media loves to brainwash people into thinking Americans are some type of disgrace or terrible people. You just like to prioritize ours, as we could just as easily prioritize yours, and make fun of your society and blast on your problems as easily as you can blast on ours. Keep in mind everyone from the old world are “Americans,” (since we aren’t truly “Americans”) so you are really just making fun of yourself, stop being a damn hypocrite.
As an American, this was humbling to watch. The joy in one girls face with the first taste of brisket was amazing to watch. I would love to go out to dinner or have any of these folks over. Great content!
Was raised on Rudy's growing up and now live out of state. I make it a point to eat there at least once every time I visit home. Made me smile watching this!
Before I moved to Austin, I worked at the Rudy's commissary (this was back in 2002 - 2004 or so) offa I-10 north of San Antonio (out by La Cantera and the Dominion) - where we made all the brisket, chicken, turkey, beans, cream corn, and so on. I was hired by Doc Hollywood despite showing up an hour late - nicest guy I ever met (and worked with), and didn't hold it against me that I was covered in tire dirt because I'd had a flat tire on the way there and had to change it. Best part of working there was the food. And even on my off days I'd comp pulled brisket (came with a loaf of bread) and sides for me and my friends, almost every week. Food was great (assume still is). Still remember how to make it all (and do when I BBQ).
Dank Bleach that was prob my fav part. It is so true haha I'm doing a BBQ today as well. ❤ I'll be thinking about that when I'm shoving my face wity food lolol
This video really made me smile. When the guy said he felt honored for trying the new alabama sauce i almost got teary eyed. Makes me realize i take a lot for granted.
**turns to camera** _"Everything's bigger in Texas."_ I heard a resounding "hell yeah" from the other side of the country, every viewer in Texas watching at the same exact moment
Her reaction at 9:24 is so adorable and heartwarming. Good brisket still gets me like that, so I can't even imagine how incredible of an experience that was for her. I love everyone's reaction to the beef ribs! Awesome.
"I mean, we risked our lives to come here just so we could have a bowl of rice. Then I realized this was a different world." Oof. Who's cutting the onions?😭
And the woman was talking about how she disliked all the wasted food in restaurants and that is why she said this is a very different world, in a negative way and i do agree, capitalism doesn't care about wasting food despite poor people starving of hungry
Zarza Mora I mean tho how is this specifically capitalism’s fault I’m not too educated on how everything works like capalism and communism but it’s the people that waste the food I’m not sure how switching to communism or socialism would change that also you must remember North Korean is cheap in U.S dollars but North Koreans have little way of making money and most jobs in North Korea don’t pay much if anything so there would be no way to afford the “cheap food”
@John Are you dumb? Our GDP is very high, the second highest state GDP in fact. Public transport is useless because the state is so large. Nothing wrong with the education either. We also have the largest medical center in the world, along with cutting edge technology for treating cancer, etc. We have NASA, we have almost every fortune 500 oil company, and the list goes on. You need to focus on your brains and not Texas' you narcissist.
@John Texas has some pretty legit colleges and changing the public transportation in Texas is almost pointless, since there aren't many people who use it. Please don't lie through your teeth about us. Thanks!
Verlisify I kinda shed a tear during that moment. I was mostly envoys because that brisket.... but it was a happy tear as well, she looked like all was right in the world.
chickensaurusrex711 No no no, the country would not allow them to use 'western' utensils. They did teach them about it, however the word they used was a "pitchfork" rather than a "fork" to make it seem bad. Thus, they don't have much experience in the utensil. I don't quite understand your point?
Rather than a pitchfork, it'd be more accurate to call it a manure fork. "True pitchforks typically have only two or three tines, while manure forks have four or more tines"
Heck, after being stationed in South Korea for 3 years, coming back to the US and being given a fork and no option for a spoon and chopsticks felt really weird.
“Eating beef is enough to get you executed” Damn, that hits me in the feels. Sometimes we don’t know how good we got it. Never take anything for granted my friends🤙🏾
Exactly what I was thinking hearing their stories. It's so awesome to see them finally be able to experience something they've never had thats as simple as food choices.
@@buffy8021 They used to hate us purely because that's what they were raised to think. If nobody ever raised you to eat with a fork (and the only things you were taught about using a fork was negative), you wouldn't use one. Everything relates to experience. The difference is that they were taught other perspectives and that's just one mild comparison. That being said, we need to do the same in reverse. One culture can't just learn about another, it has to go both ways.
As an American, it's hard to express how good this video makes me feel. I love to see anyone experience good BBQ for the first time but then you add the fact that these people went most of their lives eating almost no meat and its just amazing to see.
I hear what you're saying. Everyone takes pride in their local food culture, so it always feels good to see other people being introduced to and liking your food culture. It's taking pride in sharing a part of your country and culture. It also feels good because America is mostly known as the fast food nation, so it's good to show people that there is more to American cuisine that McDonalds and KFC.
As an American, this video was very humbling. I'm glad I saw this now during quarantine instead of when it came out because I was honestly starting to get full of myself thinking about how much it sucks that I can't go out to my favorite BBQ joints right now. I'm kind of grateful this video was recommended because it put me in my place whilst also making me feel so happy for these people to be able to experience food I grew up with.
As you say, the socialists in the media and government have finally made your life similar to the oppression of a communist dictatorship. Which has been their goal for decades. It doesn't matter that Wal-Mart employees are still alive and well, proving that it's been safe for people to go to work the entire time, but you still have to stay home because the government says so.
@@Sixgunharlequin - do you understand that millions of Wal-Mart employees are still alive, even though they've been going to work every day while you were hiding at home afraid of germs? What about the employees at every gas station and grocery store? They go to work every day, and they're fine, which shows that your BBQ restaurant could've stayed open with similar results. Why can't you go to your favorite BBQ joint, if you can go to Wal-Mart? Because the media told you it's not safe, and the politicians told your BBQ joint they'd be arrested if they sold you BBQ. So when you compared your current situation to the horrors of North Korea, saying that your government-enforced loss of freedom makes you understand them, you were right. You're watching North Koreans doing something that you are not allowed to do. In North Korea, the government has complete control over what the people are allowed to do. Because the people don't have money or freedom, the government controls their lives. Socialists in our country have been working towards the same thing for over 60 years, and they're bragging on social media that Coronavirus is their victory. "I'm glad the lockdown shows that we can get universal basic income like we've been promoting for years." "I'm glad the lockdown is finally destroying capitalism." And the government also closed the churches, just like in other socialist takeovers from Cuba to China. Notice that states with Democrat governors have the strictest lockdowns and also the most coronavirus cases - partly because they ordered nursing homes to accept infected residents, which killed the other residents, which increased the numbers, which gave them a reason to tell you it wasn't safe to go outside, which convinced you to accept that your daily life could be stopped to a standstill whenever a politician says so. Thousands of weddings were cancelled, and people aren't allowed to go to their own grandmothers' funerals. Schools are closed, even though less than 1 out of every 10 Million children has gotten sick. The state of Maine has fewer than 50 coronavirus patients in hospitals, but over 100,000 people whose jobs have been closed by the government. This virus isn't fundamentally different from past viruses, so why is the response more drastic than anything in the history of the world? Logically it must not be about the virus itself. Why are the police arresting people for being outside alone? Being alone, it's impossible to infect anyone. But the police arrest the person, and the police aren't wearing masks, so they're willing to risk infection to increase government control. The priority isn't safety.
@@customsongmaker Its more contagious than most similar illnesses and has no treatment that has been shown to work. That in itself makes it fundamentally different. Grocery stores are working out because there are guidelines in place to limit how many people are around eachother at once. They have to stay open though because they're essential which isnt just a fancy word but is literally what they are. Without grocery stores or other food places able to deliver contact-free, people would not be able to eat. Someone not knowing the precautions put out by the businesses that have to stay open shows your ignorance and it's people with ignorance like yours that is reopening the country in the middle of the current peak rather than letting it run its course through the next peaks that will happen. That's how you make the spread if the virus worse than before.
@@Sixgunharlequin #1, 60 million Americans got H1N1 when Obama was President, and it killed more people, so you're the one who's ignorant about it being more contagious and more deadly. It's not. #2, Every Wal-Mart customer comes within 6 feet of the cashier, and then the cashier comes close to every other customer. Wal-Mart isn't any more essential than local small businesses that are forced to close. #3, Hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment for over 90% of patients, but Democrat governors banned it without any medical or scientific justification. #4, social distancing was never supposed to decrease the number of people who get sick. The same number of people will get sick, but they wanted to "flatten the curve" and let you catch the virus next month instead of this month. So you're not saving anyone's lives, you're just patting yourself on the back while people die of thousands of other illnesses because most nurses have been laid off. You're actually bragging about shutting down doctor's offices and cancelling people's surgeries. You've actually just said that Wal-Mart is more essential than schools and doctors' offices and weddings and funerals. Have you stopped to ask yourself if maybe the media has tricked you into believing things that don't make sense?
I don't know how I got here, but I was smiling the whole time. The young girl who took a bite of that brisket killed me, that smile was one of the most wholesome things I've ever seen. Pls protect.
@@edwardkay3193 I doubt there's many American style bbq restaurants in SK, and idk if she is still in poverty because it did say she came over at 12, which is early enough for her to get into school and start learning to maybe go to college, depends on how NK primary education is i guess, although i don't see it as being anything stellar but maybe their low end education in things like math and language classes for writing are decent but are less good the higher you go. @Danius Von Gailis Being big isn't the issue, its being on the border while one side of the isle dangles citizenship in front of them. It's sickening exploitation from liberals that will destroy the nation if they're allowed to succeed.

I find it interesting that South Koreans view the stereotypical North Korean as a "bad person". In the US, we tend to view them as starving, hard-working victims of a bad government, not bad themselves.
Sean Brass but it is understandable why they'd think that, during the Cold War Americans viewed Russians as evil communists, and Russians viewed us as the "capitalist pigs". It's just how rival countries see each other.
Lets give it up for our host who sat down and had multiple meals with the same meat and sauce just to treat these North Koreans to their first American meal.
I always tear up a little when seeing peoples' heartfelt reactions experiencing something different and new for the first time, especially when you see them excited about it. ❤️
they are raised polite because if they speak up they get killed. Simple as that. Raised in North Korea, you keep quiet or you die, so yes, they are quiet and polite.
When the Asian sauce boss looked at the camera and said "Everything is bigger in Texas" I fucking DIED! It's almost like he was peering into ever American's soul, giving a little wink and a nod!
I liked this video! I'm from Texas and it was a real honor to see them enjoy a good meal and friendly conversation with a friend! In Texas that's all we need!
@@DerPolygonianer I like how you threw in the popular phrase ''bigger is better'' at the end in reference to the correction of bigger/better in Texas. That little touch made it sound sincere rather than just correcting him. At least that's how I interpreted your comment. 👍👍👍
I am a sixth-generation Texan. I like BBQ sauces. I liked watching these people try BBQ and enjoy it. To me, it's best with the sides (potato salad, coleslaw and homestyle pinto beans---not from a can, some pickle and onion slices) with a slice of white bread, and a glass of iced tea, (sweet or unsweetened). You can't just eat too much meat with all that going on, either.

I laughed when they showed the sauces on the table the Texas sauces were ginormous! We live up to it every time. Also I really enjoyed this video. It humbles me to see people enjoying the food that we take so much for granted. Thank you for this. Much love from Texas!
Awesome video. Nice to see BBQ that actually looks representative of American BBQ getting tried. All the extra effort it took is appreciated! The woman in red was really interesting. She said she visited the US a few times so I'm curious as to what she thought after being taught that we were evil her whole life.

I was raised to eat everything on my plate. When I moved to Korea I almost died! The portions were too much. It was explained to me that if you cleaned your plate it meant you had a bad host, they did not give you enough. I learned to leave a little. Bringing food home though? Never. It would look bizarre, like you were homeless. There were several cultural differences like this that really took time for me to accept.
@@rexmundi3108 Man, I don't care if it's culturally unusual, waste isn't something I'm such a fan of. If you make a huge pot of pasta at home, you're not going to just throw it out once you get done with the supper. You put it in the fridge and bring it for lunch the next day, or you have it if the rest of your family wants a meal you don't like, or you just keep it for a while to eat if you get hungry at an unusual time. Why should it be any different at a restaurant?
It really did look as if she had been waiting her whole life for that moment... just to know what beef tastes like. Such genuine appreciation for food. Certainly a lovely moment and I don't know if there's anything in the world I could appreciate like that.
While there were a great many instances in this video where I was taken by their reaction, that moment struck me the most. The look of sheer joy on her face was priceless.
Me too. It breaks my heart to see people had to live on so little food & so little variety. And some still are. So, as much as it was great to see their reactions, it was also hard because you know why they'd never had much in the way of meat or variety in their diets. Bittersweet.
@@MasterGeekMX same here in Brazil. Kids at schools always dream about having lockers in their school lol, but it's just a silly thing because they see them in American movies.
When you live in as shitty as a place as North Korea, family/friends are all you have. They dont get things like RUclips, video games, or shit like that to relax with. The lady said how little meat they got to eat, so its understandable thatd they would be very thin or unhealthy. If youre always hungry, you dont have anything else to help keep your mind off of it, besides talking to and leaning on those in the same position as you.
North Koreans are not stupid, many of them know that their government is full of shit, but they have to keep quiet because complaining can have very serious consequences.
Oh my Goodness. Can we just pause to acknowledge how truly sweet they all are? They are so earnest and thoughtful. I don't know. this might sound ignorant... but i find it fascinating that something we take for granted brought them so much joy hahaha, just the reactions on their faces put a big smile on my face for some reason
I too was smiling, it was both endearing and humbling to see something that is often taken for granted bring such reactions.. I must thank my cat for hijacking the video I was watching and somehow getting this one to play when I briefly left the room. 😁
It's always great, seeing them so happy trying what other countries normally eat. Sure they may come from a totalitarian dictatorship, but they are very lucky people, because if they didn't flee from North Korea, they wouldn't ever get to try anything like this. I am so proud of their bravery, and I'm prouder of them at least willing to try new foods. The truth is that travelling opens your mind. I met people when I was in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and they appreciated me at least trying new foods, and let me tell you, a lot of the stuff they eat is just delicious! Kaya Toast, Bakso and Sate Padang are some of my favourites.
I don't take it for granted. I don't know how spoiled you are, but I don't get high end ribs, etc., all of the time, and so every time I do eat that stuff, I'm making the same face they are. Ribs, steak, crab, lobster are once or twice a year things for me. They definitely are not taken for granted.

"The first thing that comes to mind: That's why Americans gain weight". You my friend are not wrong. Put some good bbq in front of me, and I can't stop eating it until it's gone.
The difference (i think) if you did the same with say, a Scandinav.. most of our food would not be stuffed full of artificial chemicals and such.. Yea, we both would (eventually) end up fatter than a barrel.. but i would (most likely) still be healthier than you..
And an equal petition to send every lover of communism to North Korea, including communist-leaning socialists, to eat dogs and send in rations of fur. Seriously. I have no idea why anyone would support ideologies that have proven time and time again to lead to destruction.
Honestly we should treat them as former slaves and give them complete re-education. I feel so badly for them and when I start making 65K+ here in a year or two, I will help them out however I can. Who is harder working than a person who is completely new to the world. North Koreans are so capable and motivated, they are the perfect employees with just a bit of training.

yeh same my family will take stuff home. even if we have just a tiny bit of something like rice after being at a chinese restaurant or a bit of sauce after being at an indian one, we always pack it up and then add it to a later meal :) never waste food
bonus story: when i was in elementary school, my mom helped out with halfday classroom lunches. once she saw someone throw away a full untouched apple and got really upset and told me about it later and how inexplicably wasteful it was

On the rare occasion I order out, It usually takes me 3 meals to finish a dish. BTW I only eat in a restaurant about twice a year, as people that I eat with are commenting about how little I eat.
Fuck off edgy bitch

But media loves to brainwash people into thinking Americans are some type of disgrace or terrible people.
@@customsongmaker Didnt understand most of your comment other than the ignorant finish to it claiming it's safe to be out when it's not.

"I'm glad the lockdown shows that we can get universal basic income like we've been promoting for years." "I'm glad the lockdown is finally destroying capitalism."
And the government also closed the churches, just like in other socialist takeovers from Cuba to China.

@@edwardkay3193 I doubt there's many American style bbq restaurants in SK, and idk if she is still in poverty because it did say she came over at 12, which is early enough for her to get into school and start learning to maybe go to college, depends on how NK primary education is i guess, although i don't see it as being anything stellar but maybe their low end education in things like math and language classes for writing are decent but are less good the higher you go. It's always great, seeing them so happy trying what other countries normally eat. "Noone is addicted to starvation"
No one*
Cases of starvation in the United States are virtually non-existent.
"fear of being shot"
Eh, no.
There are on average ~30,000 gun deaths in the United States annually.
• 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws
• 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified
• 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons - gun violence
• 3% are accidental discharge deaths
So technically, "gun violence" is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100. Still too many? Well,
first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation?
• 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago
• 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore
• 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit
• 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington D.C. (a 54% increase over prior years)
25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not
the lack of law that is the root cause.
Educate yourself.
