God bless these 6 musicians and the good they do to humanity.
One of the best chamber pieces ever conceived.
Perhaps the greatest piece of music ever?
@@bertrandmarotte4401 Let's just say there's none better.
@@bertrandmarotte4401 perhaps...
Almost...just take out the "one of"
Five men in total intimacy together. If only the world could be like something even approaching this it would be wonderful thing.
Absolutely the best chamber piece ever conceived. Shows what the violist can do.
The finest work of all chamber music. Schubert is a real genius. He composed several greatest works in western music history during his last years of life. It is a miracle.
...and at the other end of his life he managed to compose Gretchen am Spinnrade (I'm just going to say it), the greatest lied ever written, at the tender age of seventeen. Impossible and unbelievable.
Imagine what he'd have done if he'd lived his three score and ten!
I couldn't agree more. After refine sweetness of the 1st movement suddently the dark fantasy of 2nd movement is shock the audiences. It's so sweet, sadness of funeral march and suddend stormy in the middle which right after the storm its becomes real feneral. This movement I love the most. It's beautiful and scary in the same time.
@@erichodge567 Any particular recordings you would recommend? I'm liking Jessye Norman's. Thank you
Genius, yes. Miracle, no.
One of the greatest string quartets/quintets of all time played by one of the greatest ensembles of all time.
If I were spending twenty years alone in outer space and I could only take one piece of music with me, this would be it.
Make sure to bring enough batteries.
I agree today and many days in the past and future. On some days, though, I'd vote for Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, like this Quintet a work of beauty, depth, and pure genius.
Me too! Especially the Adagio which just sends me to heaven!
AH, to you, outer space is somewhat like a desert island and this is your desert island music. My friend, on the contrary, outer space is full of intelligent life forms lot more advance than us. However, they will not appreciate this SCHUBERT chamber like you did. ENJOY.
Great seeing David Finckel back in the fold...and what a magical performance here.
Almost as good as their recording from 1992
One of most wonderful performances of this classic!!!!!
Patricia rutledge
WOW. What an emotional and amazing situation they made. Return of the former 35 years member! Great to see this. They made a disc of that masterpiece with the great Slava, and the disc is still my all-time favorite.
Second movement is the best masterpiece ever for me
I agree! Absolutey beautiful!
Rubinstein considered it the entrance to Heaven.
me too....
There is a mathematical enigma here. This string quintet, which has been a favourite of mine for more than half a century, clearly requires five players; but in this utterly outstanding performance, a single heart beats throughout, and a single soul sings. I have never heard the like of it. (And I notice, in this church setting, that the signs for "PEACE" and "HOPE" have been unceremoniously stashed away in a corner, as though in recognition of the fact that in Schubert's all-encompassing vision, such banal slogans have no place in the expression of true sublimity. Thank you, thank you.
I agree with everything you say except the banners. They are positioned directly behind the lectern where Scripture is proclaimed and where the preacher holds forth. But yes, there is no place for banality, spiritual or otherwise, in the presence of Schubert--and Emerson.
Actually, on second look, it seems that the podium has been moved for the musicians. Hard to tell where the banners would normally be.
Alban Berg.
Omg this whole performance is a delirium
I hope to be able see them live one day
I was able to see this evening at fmg, gorgeous.
I saw them quite a lot in the early eighties. They were booked for a concert at a small chamber music series held in the chapel at Bard College. They were booked before they won a big something or other (of which I see no mention in their Wikipedia article nor on their website) and played just after. The place was packed because of the notoriety. They apparently liked the series because they came back subsequent seasons. I was lucky to be the local critic and get all those free tickets. They were the first quartet I had encountered that swapped out the first and second violin parts. That is pretty much standard now.
Thank you, Franzl 😇 for leaving behind such a treasure of music!!!! And thanks to such great artists we are able to listen and stunning by our hearts!❤ 🙏
I finally found it! My only source of information of music was only encarta and as a nine year old kid I always loved the classical music. Encarta only gives you snippets of the pieces and this was one of them that has always clung to me. It's been long since I've been in touch with the Classics and I remembered this tune and I'm so happy I found it
i find youtube to be a great source of music performances no matter what your tastes. The resolution of the files is not what I'd like to see but great playing shines forth in spite of that. I have thousands of performances bookmarked so I can sit back and listen to them at will.
I use and external DAC that feeds my stereo so I can hear what these files have to offer. My DAC treats lower resolution files very kindly so the sound I get is quite good, I would rate musicality as more important than ultimate detail that would tend to highlight the resolution of the file (bitrate) more.
Their CD from 1992 of this piece is probably the best interpretation that I've ever heard.
I was just going to come here to say that! The definitive version for sure. Everyone else plays the "loud" part of the adagio too slow and haltingly.
Was it the recording made in Germany with Rostropovich?
@@jantigercat that’s the one.
Kinda forgot what an amazing piece of music this is, and they really do it justice here.
Franz Schubert
1797-1828
Thankyou for sharing this Michael.
Emerson is able to play with deep feeling without schmaltz or sentimentality. The performance is clear, direct, patient, and assured, with nothing to prove to anyone. This gives it a deep spiritual quality, as if all unessentials have been left behind, leaving only the music's pure, timeless soul.
Is there any way this recording could be made available for download or purchase?
thank you so much for putting your heart into this performance
Que interpretación tan apasionada fabulosa, sublime. Gracias por compartir.
Schubert's music flows like water.
I keep listening this music.
2nd mov adagio is great
for this kind of weather.
thank you all for playing Schubert's amazing music and for sharing.
Gorgeous piece so wonderfully played. Thank you for posting it. Thanks also to Alec for mentioning the Emerson CD of this piece which I will order today.
If this is not the most sublime, and glorious and heartfelt piece of music ever written, then what is? Mozart comes close, so too Beethoven. But this man, glorious Schubert, has it all here. The most perfect piece of compositional genius. Ever!
Beware superlatives. Advice from my second grade teacher. Never best nor most nor ever nor perfect nor worst.
@@martyheresniak5203 But your second grade teacher was the greatest ever, I'm sure!
@@martyheresniak5203 Do you have a soul? Do you have ears to listen? Never mind trite advice from your "second grade teacher" and I'm sure he/she was just that. Second Grade. Listen again, and be in awe of some of the most sublime music ever, ever, written.

@@grangetowncardiff6935 What an ass. How utterly knit-picky. I was not speaking of the music nor its quality, but of the unfortunate use of superlatives. Perhaps you should work on your reading comprehension.
And, no, I do not have a soul. I don't believe in that kind of fairy tale.
Remarkably stormy and intense for C major. Masterful. I knew 1st violinist Phil Setzer and recorded him in his early days, around 1971 at Franconia college in New Hampshire
Super good performance. I went to their concert at stony-brook. It was very different them what we could hear on youtube. Highly recommend go to the concert, pay and listen.
True. Nothing beats a live performance.
at around 27:00, the coda to the 2nd movt. is one of the most heart-breaking in all music. And played here so honestly and without exaggeration. Simply stunning.
Thank you. Wonderful.
great music and performance of this schubert gem...
This is so sublime and heavenly! I am sending it to my former piano mentor, William Corbett-Jones of San Francisco, a marvelous pianist and person who loves Schubert! Happy Holidays,....
Was für eine großartige Aufnahme! Mehr Musik kann ich mir kaum vorstellen.
Terrific performance; A+!
Gorgeous richness of sound. I don't want it to end. And yes I'll try to bring enough batteries for forever!
How beautiful performance it is!!
how could they play so harmonious
and so best balanced in music !
just. maestro's expression.!!
also Ich muss sagen ,ich wundere mich so sehr , wie sie so harmonisierten in ganzen Musik,in beste Balance!! so faszinierte Interpretation immer -hin ausspruch!
This music reaches you inner being. The soul is touched in an imaginable way.
Couldn’t have said it better; just sublime, especially the adagio
19:36 the harmonies here kill me every time ❤
I adore and marvel at Schubert's quiet place there alongside Beethoven et al. What treasures of profound ponderings and outright statements that puts him in a position for contributions (he was writing half step modulations before others conceived of such) to the growth of music. He did this right alongside Beethoven without demand or apology. It's as if Schubert emerged fully mature and musically refined which only got better. 31 years on this planet and left dozens of musical treasures for audiences to appreciate the timeless relevance of this music. This work defies description or summary. It has simply to be listened to in rapt attention and reverence.
Sublime. I was sorry to hear of the quartet retiring.
I just listened to this piece (I. & III.) at my college. This is one of my favorite pieces now
Like the first light of dawn, this music opens your eyes to new promises and to all the wonders of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken the loves, the skinned lives and torpor of the sleeping watchmen
This video is super nice and relaxing
What a legacy !! Amazing !!
And THIS could be burnt!!!!
Composer died few weeks after finishing this, and no one knew about this work
Helping me through a tough time…so fine Thanks for being there..❤ ..
I’m on my 3rd year of playing cello. We are doing “small groups” in my school orchestra, and we ended up with 2 cellists. We have an ensemble of 106 in the large class, and 40ish in the higher level class. We wanted to play a quintet with 2 cellos, and I am so excited to play this piece. Thank you for sharing!
Congratulations.

The adagio will tear your heart out.
Always cry on that one!!
Kenneth Branagh " Conspiracy" .... one of the most subliminally and painfully ironic quotes in any movie .....
Cello pizzicato was too loud in too many places for my taste.
good to see Finckel back together
Love the opening of this piece. It has a very "Brahms 3rd Symphony" feel to it. The Emerson, of course, is brilliant.
The viola part is on 🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!
That was the instrument Schubert played in ensembles like this.
I love 💞 this quintet
Bravo!
FABULOUS
SALUTATIONS TO MAESTROS
THANKS from India
I love duet the second theme of 1st movement by two cellos
Wow, wow, wow, great, great!
i think i'm in love with both cellists lol
Bravo
I believe Schubert is who Mozart would have become if he had lived into the 19th century.
Exactely the same I think since my childhood. The fifth symphony of Schubert is like a postum Mozart symphony.
And Brahms is the rebirth of Schubert...
Eine Sternstunde der Musikgeschichte
They're recording with Rostropovich in the early 90's is still the best interpretation, in my humble opinion.
I'll raise you the one with Pablo Casals and the Vegh Quartet. Slava was the greatest soloist in history but for Chamber Music and Bach Suites there is only Pablo.
A MAGNIFICENT INTERPRETATION AT MARLBORO CONCERT LEVEL
Once in a species genius. Schubert.
When music touches the soul...
The Adagio is celestial.
Intergalactique certifié !
Desert Island top ten for sure
The 2nd theme is sublime (Allegro ma non troppo). 02:50
Wow. 2:03
Good audience.🦋
5 Männer in Einklang, Gottes Segen.
Probably the greatest music ever written in the entire music history after the cello suites.
As a professional cellist, I appreciate the sentiment, but no. Bach’s Cello Suites are not even the greatest string music ever written, not even HIS greatest string music
38:18
I have an LP recording of this work with Casals and it is funny how he sometimes grunts in sympathy with his cello.
Schubert could have been another Beethoven, had he lived longer, already created so many classics in his short life.
I think comparisons like this are inappropriate and silly. Beethoven’s and Schubert’s music were completely different! Why do we have to compare everything to Beethoven? Let’s just enjoy each for what they are!
☺️enjoy 🙏🏼 …
Ain't the last part a fandango?
Amazing how throughout Schubert's music one can always hear the idea of death luring around
God, from 46:20 it feels so climactic
Your turn, Ludwig.
Alas Ludwig was already dead a year by the time this was written. This couldn't have been written if Ludwig's later String Quartets had not come first

I wonder how felt Finckel playing it with a new member of his old quartet, he was playing for many years. He did legendary recording with Rostropovich and now he is playing with Watson, but the 2nd cello...And Finckel sweet tone is unmemorable...Like ex and current wife together ;)
In the preCOVID realm, the Merriam-Webster`s definition of "unmemorable" used to be this :
www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/unmemorable
Alas, apparently no more...
And neither Paul Watkins, as i just realized, called these days Watson...
And then, as if all of that was not enough, those subtle wives` innuendos ...
O tempora! O mores!
Paul Watkins ..I think I've seen him do Borodin.. I like the music just as long as I do not see him play... sorry, I loose my aplomb at times..
Thank you very much for your poetically lyrical thoughts about growing older, holy Inca sites, slow-growing Chilean palms, and, especially, Schubert’s sublime Cello Quintet. I forwarded your beautiful comments to the members of the quintet that performed Schubert's late masterpiece. They were similarly moved by what you wrote.
I prefere this first Violin 🎶
wow, a little bit draggy for the emerson

The interpretation does not convince me: The powerful downward movement in the first sentence is artificial. The first violinist often plays impure, the sound of his instrument is very sharp and flat...
Pardon my Ignorance ,but I'm guessing this is not the "Trout" ? Heh, heh, heh, & that would be because it's a "Quintet"
This is not The Trout. The Trout is a different Schubert quintet, but for the rather unusual combination of piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
Age has its benefits. Glad they’re not rushing like they used to... PS Ridiculously bad camera/editing work
invisible violist...
The first violin is still too strong in the second movement.
Not very flattering lighting. Maybe that's what caused the occasional pitch problems. And way too serious.
I find the choice of furniture off-putting
