  • Those of us that went on the Rock Legends Cruise shared the making of history in so many ways! This video of the Artimus Pyle Band features both Artimus Pyle and Bob Burns, original drummer from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Filmed by Michael for Rock Legends Photographers. We have lots of photos in the southern rock folder on our site Rock Legends Photographers dot com.

Saw the Artimus Pyle Band in New Jersey at a Harvest Festival in 2019. Band sounded awesome and you can see that Artimus still has the passion and love for performing. Dude can still play the drums. Got to talk to him for a few minutes the next day and seems like a humble down to earth guy.

I see that Ronnie Van Zant didn't pick YOU to replace Bob Burns so Artimus has to be good because Ronnie didn't have any "lame" musicians in his band. If it's good enough for Ronnie, it's good enough fur me.

If I understand it correctly, the late great Charlie Daniels chose Artimus to replace his drummer who was leaving the band. (Talk about a band leader with high standards!). But at the last minute Charlie's drummer decided to stay on, so Charlie told Artimus that Skynyrd was looking for a drummer. And on Charlie's word RVZ arranged to give Artimus a listen. (Actually I think Ronnie had a couple Skynyrd band members audition him). But I think Charlie's endorsement carried a lot of weight, and I think Artimus was pretty much hired on Charlie Daniel's word!

      i turned 57 last wed.
i had the good fortune to see a show at the neil blaisdel center in honolulu Hi in the early 1990s....it was the final show of a reunion tour that had lasted many months and was the the first tour in several years for the remaining members of the most badass tightest and by far and away the most musicaly talented band ive ever heard to this day.it was a special show and several guests who had not been part of this tour flew in for the last show...
a friend of mine and myself decided not to muss this about noon on day of show...we drove from oahus north shore...went to the boxoffice and somehow got 12th row floor seats...an unsold block had been released for sale....so lucky i guess...we then found a bar and had a couple drinks to pass the 3 hrs till showtime...and when this band got on stage i witnessed a group of the most talented musicians who gave a standout show that i will never forget...the best band as far as musical talent that ive ever seen...and ive been to many concerts.the way that 3 guitars can all play lead in perfect unison and then each trade to rythm then back and do a sort of round robin that was so tight and crisp and never mussed up for the whole show....ì dont think any other group can come close...no slackers here...these guys are all topnotch and proved they are number one.
so i just saw a couple vids here that sparked my memory....and so i feel humbled and am honored to have seen them live

Got to see Artie and his band several years ago in Jax, Fl. As much as we all miss Ronnie, if the crash never happened, come on, I think most folks would agree that the musicians (ie) drummers like Arti and Bob were really the stars. The guitars, drums, piano, ( dad gum that Gary) they are what we were bangin our heads to. Ronnie was the voice, the face, and I miss him and all that we as collective fans miss every life lost on that fateful day. Hell, hate me for saying it, but the muscians killed us in our headphones.

As a drummer I noticed one odd thing that is unique. When you play a bass drum or double pedals your legs can feel heavy after a bunch of songs. Especially if you are playing heal up. Therefore, like a distance runner we try to wear very light running shoes or you will see guys that even play barefoot. Artimus is wearing desert style 6" military boots. Ronnie Van Zant was famous for going barefoot on stage while you have Artimus here basically wearing ankle weights. If you play the drums you probably noticed that.

    • @tdrewke
      @tdrewke 6 лет назад +1

I did notice it and you can see it in HD on the Cruise video also here on the Tube. I can't imagine playing at all with those boots on, let alone playing as well as he does. What a pro.

Artstar2 another drummer here... that was the first thing I noticed when he was climbing into his drum set...’ freakin work/combat boots?!?’ I wear New Balance running sneakers, just like you said. Light, and great traction so your feet don’t slide around on the pedals. I saw the APB open for the Marshall Tucker Band about a year ago in Clearwater Fla. Artimus still kicks ass, and anyone saying he still ‘doesn’t have it’ is full of shit!!
A bittersweet night, they played on the day word came out that Gregg Allman died. MTB was VERY good friends with the Allman Bros. Band, so half of their set that night were Allman Bros. songs, as a tribute. And they were spot-on perfection!

Artimus Pyle is an egomaniac. Him & Ronnie Van Zant used to fight all the time over how the music should be played. Ronnie smacked him once & said, listen motherf*cker, this is MY band & we play it MY way or you can just quit. Sure Artimus brought Bob out to play, but did you notice the camera was always on Artimus? While Bob only got an over the shoulder, pan shot. It’s always about Artimus. Artimus Pyle graduated from Eastmore High School here in Columbus, Ohio in 1966. I lived right across from the middle school and could see a sign in front of the school commemorating the three famous alumni. Artimus Pyle, Archie Griffin, and Michael Feinstein. (in that order). I always wondered where Tom "Artimus" Pyle lived exactly in the neighborhood. On the off chance you ever see this Artimus let me know. I'll get the IM if you reply to this 'reply' under comment:) I am a huge Skynyrd fan with both of you great drummers!

Sounds great ! You guys rock !
I know You Ain't the One, but I bet you are Double Trouble - you know when a black cat cuts your trail - LORD they come in pairs of two ...
Were you a Simple Man before Tuesday left ? You probably have a lot of Things Goin' On now that you are a Free Bird .
Take care of that Mississippi Kid and stay away from the Poison Whiskey .
If you can, please Gimme Three Steps for learning how to resist the temptations of going to the Jug and meeting up with Linda Lu .
The Little Brown Jug was a bar, not far from the high school .
Swamp Music - LYNYRD SKYNYRD .
Hey - it's a simple song as far as lyrics but the band churns out the rhythm, bass and side riffs so busy and non-stop that it is very hard to concentrate on any part because there is so much goodness going on from each member . I promise if you listen to this song on headphones you will want to play it over and over at least 100 times .
It is my favorite song of all time :
The reason why I like this song so much is that every member of the band is steadily slamming out the jam during the entire song . I can taste strawberry, peach, apple, raspberry, grape, cinnamon, cherry, banana, pecan, watermelon, avocado, persimmon, and fried bream . ( with salt and black pepper )
    I would very much like a ' Second Helping ' ( Their Second Album 1974 )
I just listened to it 5 times after making this comment .
    Make that 6 times .
I went to the same high school they went to - 10 years after them .
    Robert E. Lee High School
They named the band after their gym teacher who kept bugging them about their hair . ( Leonard Skinner )
    I have about 8 thousand mp3 files of about 40 rock groups from the 70 ' s .
That is the only song I play - over and over and over - sometimes more than 10 times in a row .
In 1975 when I was in 12th grade - we skipped school and stayed on the bus . The bus driver - an older black man, Mr. McKenzie ( we thought of him as similar to Curtis Loew ) took us to his house and we installed an old 8 track tape player and speakers on the bus . Of course the first tape to play was Pronounced . ( don't tell anyone - but - he gave us a beer )
Another of my favorites of theirs is ' Railroad Song ' and ' Made In The Shade ' .
I worked at the railroad in ' 78 and worked with an engineer named Randy Heron - he was friends will everyone in the band and their families . I got to meet Gene Odom ( Security and body guard for the band - survived the crash ) one evening at The Jug .
Gene Odom - on working with Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones and Plane Crash/ HOWGO
    ruclips.net/video/kFTLK0RP7DE/видео.html
Another time, he introduced me to the singer of the Allen Collins band - ( Jimmy Dougherty )
Which reminds me of another of my favorites of his :
    Chapter One
    ruclips.net/video/dayMpivPlCk/видео.html
I have seen lyrics that show - ' sounds like ol' Son House singing the blues ...
I think he says - sounds like oh some how singing the blues - when the hound dogs start howling - it sounds like they are singing the blues
If you ever heard a hound dog howl - is sounds sad and lonely

Yep, great to see them 2 working together, but there wouldn't be anything to drum to without RVZ making the music and driving the bus.

Never was a huge Skynyrd fan but I knew the plane crash story. Also knew that Artimus was out of the loop for a long time. This clip showed up on my feed and it was nice to see that he overcame the shock and horror of that day and got back on the drum stool! Rock on Artimus Pyle you sound damn good in this clip!

I saw Artimus his band is really good I think, better then so-called Lynyrd skynyrd that tours today. Should be called "the Rossington-Van Zant Band" but I guess there like other bands from the time just out to make a buck, like the fake Molly Hatchet or as I call 'em the Bobby Ingram tribute band. & there's the Outlaws aka Henry Paul band" it's just sad just a bunch of money grabers

Wow this is awesome! Every cruise that I've been on, and I've been on 8 of them, sucked - they never had good entertainment - it was always just 2nd rate unknown bands and cheesey 3rd rate comedians. I would have gone on this cruise just to see Artimus and Bob play! Screw the ripoff island tours, crappy food (unless you pay at the real "restaurants"), the ripoff casinos. and the watered down drinks...I would have hung around the pool, drinking my own stash of tequila, just waiting to see this Legend band play. Both of those guys are Top Shelf drummers, and this band is tight. Damn, missed another one...sheeeiit!
