Payne, cantante inglese noto soprattutto per aver fatto parte degli One Direction, la più popolare boy band al mondo durante lo scorso decennio, è morto a Buenos Aires, in Argentina, a seguito della caduta dal balcone dell’hotel in cui alloggiava, al terzo piano di un palazzo del quartiere Palermo. Payne aveva 31 anni e si trovava da alcuni giorni in Argentina; pochi giorni fa era stato a un concerto di Paul McCartney. Le circostanze della caduta non sono ancora chiare. Il quotidiano argentino La Naciòn scrive che «alcuni agenti di polizia avevano già raggiunto l’hotel nel pomeriggio dopo la telefonata del manager dell’hotel, che segnalava la presenza di un uomo aggressivo apparentemente sotto l’effetto di alcol o droghe». Payne era stato quindi accompagnato nella sua stanza. Il direttore nazionale del pronto soccorso argentino ha detto in un comunicato che Payne ha riportato ferite «molto gravi» e «incompatibili con la vita» dopo una caduta da circa tredici metri
