We always called that stripe pattern ticking (it was used for the covers of pillows and mattresses when I was young). Mom used to wear dusters. I called them house dresses. It wouldn't have taken much more fabric to have made your duster into a dress. To me it is a jumper dress. I like hidden pockets best.

I just learned
about the”burn test” to identify fiber type. Natural fabrics like linen, silk and cotton make ash and synthetics melt. Please don’t take my word for it, just check out some RUclips tutorials for specifics. Great thrift flip! Thank you!

ALSO!!! Take care with silks, especially the lightweight ones. I wanted a softened burnt edge on a piece of silk for a wall hanging, and GOOD THING I moved my base of operations from the carpeted dining room to the top of my kitchen stove, because the silk went "FWOOMP!" and burning shards plummeted down to the floor when hit with lighter...

@shabbyroadstudio A better way to deal with lightweight silk is to use a candle, and hold a stretched edge of the cloth delicately to the flame. Then reposition your hands to singe the next part of the edge.

You can fold a sheet, with the hem edge matching, into four or eight layers and measure/cut straight across.

Trims all together in an eclectic way that makes your project totally wearable and 1 of a kind unique...and very desirable, i do want to make a duster like this using your idea, you have me wishing i was getting the duster! Lol 😊...i hope i will have as good of taste as yours to put one together, oh and skill, it definitely requires special skill to do...wish me luck! I think I will put the base garment on my pinnable mannequin and work from there. I can't visualize the 3 dimensions of a solid body shape while fabric is flat on a table.

I really like the color combinations and the design. I'm short (1'1/2") so I'd shorten the lengths from the armhole to the waist and then to the hemline. The armholes are too large, the pockets will be a bit tighter, love the crochet work and the denim additions

Love this. But being the person I am, sometimes adding to much, I think adding the lace you used in front, across the top of the pockets would have been cute. And maybe replace the bright white buttons with dark blue ones to add a little more blue. These are just my thoughts. What you did was great too.

For you pockets I would have put a ticking fabric strip on the top to keep the pockets deep and add contrast.

@@shabbyroadstudio sorry, I watched the rest of the video and you answered why you didn’t want to seam rip the zigzag stitch around the pocket in order to get the full lace on, sorry it didn’t take the dye. Maybe an idea for you when using the bits that won’t take the dye, have you ever thought about making a fabric paint with the dye and textile medium, it transforms into permanent, flexible fabric paint. You could mix up your own and use a paint sponge or brush to apply it. You need wax paper under it to keep it clean under that lace until it’s dry…air dry 24 hours, then heat set… I just read it said permanent on most fabrics.. it would be a trial/ error to see if it would bring you a wider option for adding warmer, aged patina, or heck, add metallics… no rules in expression through art.

Your lace in back, must be synthetic. There is a different Rit dye for synthetics.
