    Back in the 50s and 60s, Borg Warner made an overdrive unit. Dodge and Ford used it. It also, under certain speeds would disengage the trans...the vehicle would free wheel till you got over 20 mph. The had one made for the big block FE in trucks. It had a 27% OD gear, making the vehicle much more fuel efficient. Just a bit of info you may find useful.

    I am BTW, a Ford Galaxie fan. 1970 Ford Galaxie 500, 2dr, Sort Roof, 351W, 3sp FMX (prefer to step up to a C4 high output trans) with 9inch HP rear and minor mods. I miss my bone stock version that I was given from my grandfather, that I was forced to junk a very long time ago. Yes, forced to do so.

    Hey craig I really do dig the channel! I have a 1994 f-150 4x4 reg cab SB 5.0 5 speed. I plan on building up my 302 but, it only has 109k miles and I’ve been getting about 19mpg average in it by shifting before 2250 RPM’s! These 302 roller engines get great mileage if you drive them right! I had a 92 mustang gt 5.0 5 speed and I used to get 30mpg just by driving slower! I still go the speed limit, but the trick is to use the least amount of gas pedal to get up to speed and the 302 is torquey enough to swallow it up and get there! i love them!

    Good work. Keep it up. You’re learning. I do find it funny though that y’all need a hoist to lift that engine block up onto the tailgate when I lifted my block all by myself. Haha! I lifted it up and put it into an oven at my house with 400 degree heat blasting at me and powder coated it myself in my kitchen, using an old regular household oven a friend gave me. Used Eastwood’s chrome finish as a base, followed by their translucent blue. That little 302 stroker came out GORGEOUS! Check out Eastwood and do the powder coating yourself. 👍

    A lot of people have the misconception about the weight of the 64 Galaxie 500. The Galaxie actually weighs less than a GTO or many Mopars of the same year and classed as a full sized car. Just like many people think that a Plymouth Fury is a heavy car and it is not. Many cars weigh more than full sized Fury. Why do you think they used these cars to race with?

    Second mistake, If the c4 you get is stock the second time you shift to second under full throttle is will break the trans.
    Same 61 Falcon as before I did just that and had to limp it home in low because the second gear clutches or band(getting to old I can't remember) went away and would upshift after a full throttle shift to second and it was in a much lighter car with 3.90 gears. Be warned.

    first. try to figure out which firing order the cam is ground for.. the conventional 5.0 or the HO5.0 they are different.. what kind of lifters are those.. are they stock type.. with full travel without oil.. where the plunger will depress about 1/4" or the anti pump up versions that only have a very limited no oil in the lifter depression of the plunger.. turn one over and see how far is depresses with the end of a pushrod. what kind of rockers are you going to use.. don't forget that the GT40P heads have a steel channel to align each 2 rocker arm pedestals. because you have milled the heads and replaced the valve seats you are going to have to custom check every valve clearance. depending on which rockers you use and which lifters those are.. if you are going to use stock pedestal rockers.. you can get selective thickness shims to go in the channels under the pedestals to move them up. if you have to shorten the adjustment... you can grind a little off the bottom of the pedestal.. Ford Racing M6529A302 Rocker Arm Shim Kit or Crane Cams 99170-1 Rocker Arm Pedestal Shim Kit be sure to have one package of them if you are not using roller rockers. you can get roller pedestals that work with the stamped rockers.. why is the firing order important.. and you can tell what it is with a friends fingers over the spark plug holes as you rotate the crank 1/4 turn at a time...

    • @waynep343
      @waynep343 5 лет назад

      @@Thecraig909 did the lifters come from schneider or the engine rebuilder.. those look like rebuilder lifters.. push the plunger down.. how far does it move.. less than 1/8" or more than 3/16" ... you can ask which firing order to use.. and what would they prefer the lobe on the base circle.. no oil in the lifter, clearance to be with the plunger bottomed out. you will also probably need to check to see if the tip of the rocker arm is properly sweeping the tip of the valve.. so you might need a pair of adjustable pushrods.. and a 12" dial caliper from harborfreight so you can really measure the length of the pushrods when you have set them.. HF 63713 is the caliper item number.

  • @shartne

    I wonder how much the compression is going to come up after milling the heads? It will make it slightly more higher performance being a little more compression. I had my 302 heads planed and it really helped the performance in my mind LOL I bet it runs good when you get it done. Its going to flyyy. Yeah that was a pretty good expense 5, Grand. Over the years I've bought two 302 short blocks. Both were bought from different places. But they both had the same problem. The rings were not clocked right on the pistons. Neither were the rod bolts torqued properly. So, when you get your short block you may want to check these things before you start putting it together. Just so you will know for yourself that everything is the way it should be. The Ring lands on both of mine were not oiled either. Neither was the piston skirts. The first engine once it was put together it smoked like a freight train. I had to take it back apart and reclock the rings. That's when I found out the rod bolts were not torqued to spec. You don't want to get it together and in the car running before you find this out. Since you are a young man I thought I would tell you this just in case you didn't know.

    • @galaxie500xl7
      @galaxie500xl7 5 лет назад

      @@bigheadedmartian What would I do with it? I would try to hunt down a set of 390 4brl heads with big valves. A 352 and a 390 are very close kin to each other. They are both FE engines. But anyway, I would get the same cam that came in the HP 390. With 390 heads and the right cam, you can make that 352 perform just like a 390. With one exception. The 352 has a shorter stroke than the 390. So, you get it breathing right and it will spin higher in the RPM range than a 390. And it will spin up faster. The 390 has a slightly bigger bore than the 352. But not enough difference to really matter. I have three 65 Galaxies. Two have 390's and one has the 352, 4brl. Between the cars performance-wise, I can't hardly tell the difference. I put stock 390 4brl heads on it and a better 390 cam. Can't hardly tell them apart in looks or performance. If you can't find a set of 390 production heads, they are being reproduced in aluminum. Or, you can take your 352 2brl heads and have them cut for larger 390 valves.
      352 - 3.50 inch stroke x 4.00 bore
      360 - 3.50 inch stroke x 4.05 bore
      390 - 3.78 inch stroke x 4.05 bore

    So what happens to the good (and bad) stuff you got back from the machine shop? Are you going to sell it or use the good stuff in other projects?

    Great video, but why didn’t you build the extra 289 or 302 you bought for your truck a while back and build those knowing that they could have been better

    Don't throw away the damper, it can be rebuilt, or used as a core return, check out damperdoctor.com for other Galaxie parts see Macs or Deatborn classics,
    they have many of the parts you will need.

    I got a question. Why don't you put a 390 in it? You was wanting to make it as close to original as possible and I'm not a ford guy but I do think that's what came out in the Galaxie 500 isn't it?

    GT-40P heads take a P style header.....I found out the hard way. Regular headerrs for a 302 won't fit.

      I have headers that will fit thankfully.
