WHO DOES THAT?!
Philip DeFranco sup dad
Hi Phil. Hi Joe.
Hi
Hows ur diet?
Philip DeFranco 😂😂😂WHO DID THIS😂😂😂
I usually don't care about an actor's ethnicity, gender or whatever. But there are exceptions:
1: Historical/True Story movies.
2: Ethnicity/gender plays a part in the story's development.
3: Changes made solely for ideological reasons.
I agree but I also want to elaborate my opinion on #2. Ethnicity/gender should also be decided on character's personality and actions where their development comes into play such as life experience only a certain gender likely experience or origin of culture where the character has any traditions, resources, or spirituality that affects their decision-making.
Timothy Reaper agree
This video reminds me of when I got stabbed 79 times for cultural appropriation outside of a taco bell. Darn hoodlums!!
Weaverbeats wait what
heckingroy it's a joke.
oh lol, couldn't identify the joke in it xd
Hekingroy, "Stabbed 79 times" should have been a dead giveaway
Angelica Pickles well sometimes we just can't decipher text
Am I the only one who thinks we should be more angry that they're selling a simple oversized shirt for over $100??? You can buy the same shirt 2 sizes up at a Walmart for $5 for christ sake
Dangerous Mermaid so then just buy it at Walmart and go about your day
i mean it is just that the fans are buying that shit right? so, i guess it is the dumb die-hard fans that are supporting this non-sense
+Dangerous Mermaid Even that is no reason to get angry at. So it's overpriced, just don't buy it. It's other people's problem if they're dumb enough to waste their money on the items.
Lo - where do you think they got 'em from ?
If the ethnic backround of a character has significance in who the character is and the story as a whole, I think it's best to keep them in that ethnic group. If it doesn't matter in the story, then pick the best actor possible.
100% AGREE!!! I don't know anything about Hellboy but it sounded like there was some significance to this character's heritage. Unless a character's physical appearance lends itself to the story and the character's development, physical appearance shouldn't be a factor when casting. I think it's perfectly understandable though when fans get upset that their favorite characters end up looking nothing like the characters in their minds. I get that but move on, find something else to be upset about.
I completely agree. I mean there are some limits, but as long as the actor fits, it shouldn't ruin the expierence. People who have expirenced the source material will always complain, but the new viewers are the true unbiased minds.
That's why white people get every single roll😂 You wouldn't give a white roll to someone else😂
meh i think its important to stick to what they specify usually just to stop the outrage, i think diversity is important but usually it just means oh we will add a bit of black to the movie. roles like domino who is hispanic being taken by a black woman i find counter active to the sjw movement of white washing. white that your taking a less representative minority role and making her a more represented minority to please people, even though so far there is no Hispanic superheroes in movies so far, i dont think? i could be wrong.
Golden Duck Or maybe people of color just don't go into acting half as much. That is a decent enough explaination.
How about we encourage more people of color to pursue acting careers?
Anyone caught faking a hate crime should be forced to serve the max sentence of said hate crime.
forty McNuggets haha. I don't think the quaran will allow it
forty McNuggets how do u fake a hate crime?? 🤔
Thanks! I needed more rude people in my life. 😁😁
Teeny Tiny Draws my point was if ur "acting" out a hate crime, ur still actually doing it whether ur intent was funny or not.
Teeny Tiny Draws but...the conviction he is looking at is Only for filing a false report. Also, if they always got maximum punishment, conviction rates would go down, as people would be a Lot less willing to plead guilty. Ive always had this at the back of my mind, however, because i dont think it's right to forcibly create dissent amongst people because of "snitches."
But, thats a whole 'notha conversation altogether. Point is, impossible for the system to hold itself up by drastically changing the way convictions work. Not saying another, possibly better, way is impossible, just highly unlikely to ever see in our day.
False accusations of crimes should be met with punishment equivalent to that of what the accused would have suffered, especially in cases of rape and assault.
Gravuun couldn't agree more! If that happened, false accusations would become real low
Now hold on with that, might seem a bit harsh. If I accuse you of murdering me, would you really want to get the death sentence? Or would you be suddenly against an eye for an eye?
he's saying that if you accuse him of attempted murder (unless we're hiring mediums to communicate) because you don't like him for whatever reason, and it's a completely false accusation, then you should face the sentence for attempted murder because that is what he faced. You basically tried to use the government as a weapon to unfairly imprison another person, personally I'd like to see this done in rape cases where the accusation can be proven wrong with physical evidence.
If you claim someone murdered you youd either be laughed out of the police department or shot in the head because oh god the dead have risen we're all doomed.
If all of the lefties that created hoaxes after Trumps election were put in jail ... there would be no more room for other criminals.
The punishment for faking a crime should be *STRONGER* than being guilty of the actual crime.
In my opinion, if the character was mentioned to have something to do with a nationality (for example captain america was from america), then the actor should look like he's from that nationality as well. But if the story doesn't show the character's background to be from a specific nationality, then why does it matter if the actor is from a different one. The story wouldn't be less believable, and remakes don't need to be 100% accurate as well.
Seminix Mate the same with domino from deadpool the paper white skin is part of the mutation and with the black dot that's why she is named domino (I think it is that's what I heard) so it should go with that too
Seminix Mate Nationality has nothing to do with ethnicity.
+Victor Thomas For many nations it really does, as most nations have a fairly homogeneous population regarding the ethnicity represented.
Nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc. They all apply here and do not need to correlate with the actor's background unless it has a significance in the story. My bad for not talking about that.
This is why I try not to put TOO much description in my stories, I want readers to see themselves and their world in what I write.
I believe faking crimes should be punished almost to the extent of the actual crime itself; it needs to have harsh repercussions to help prevent it in the future. It's really a despicable act and can severely hurt the person or group they're claiming did the crime
Arthur Durham I agree except in some cases, should faking murder be tried like murder and potentially get the death penalty in some states?
Crazelord91 If someone almost puts you on death row , and almost gets away with it, how would you want him to get punished? He is trying to kill you...
Hamurrabi's code
the kawaii crew Gaming That's a good way to put it, I agree with that
Fester MP Yah, makes sense. Like "the kawaii crew Gaming" said also
Wow! That actor is super respectful. I've never heard of this happening. But I'm on your side that I don't care about ethnicity an actor is but i can definitely understand where fans come from for wanting it to be as close as possible to the original concepts.
Kerry Cronic Vlogs if the fans want it close to the original as possible then the black actress playing a white Irish women should step down and let a white Irish woman play the role. Or does she not have to step down because she's black? If so that's bullshit they said they wanted it close to the original so she should step down and let the role be played by a red haired white Irish woman.
Adeniyi .Omishore yeah except those two scenarios aren't exactly the same. One is whitewashing the other isn't
No it's not respectful - ish
I mean the actor has the right to not do it and I can respect that, but he kinda signs a contract were he to take the gig in which he makes the commitment at that point.
But the director has his own rights to see the movie how it fits. If he really wanted ONLY white people - that's the directors prerogative
I really don't care about race. China can make this movie and it'll all be Chinese actors - I don't hear any outrage.
Mario Mario if the original issue was about changing the characters ethnicity, how is the other case any different?
EatThis because it's a white guy, and being white is always wrong
Plaid is synonymous with tartan, which is the type of pattern that people call "plaid". Plaid is most historically associated with SCOTLAND, not Hispanic cultures. If there's any cultural appropriation going on, then it's not white people stealing from Hispanic culture, but rather the other way around. Either way, I believe the entire "cultural appropriation" bit is silly, and to say that someone can't wear something that they enjoy the look of because of the color of their skin is, by definition, racist.
Last year there was the Moana film, and there was a Halloween costume for one of the characters. People cried out loud "You can't just wear another skin colour! That's racist!", so it got removed to minimise backlash.
THAT is what they care about, but actual racism (as in: building concentration camps, as a certain Joe did) is even condoned by the American president...
Magnum Frost This is the whitest shit I've ever read.
I wasn't aware that making cohesive expressions of one's opinions and logical arguments to defend said opinions was a white thing.
I think it's also silly mostly because 100% of the people who are complaining have no fucking clue where the fuck anything comes from (As you so kindly explained). It like they all believe white man never made a god damn thing in the millions of years we've existed
I agree with your statement besides the fact that you claimed there was such thing as Hispanics stealing from "white" culture what tf is white culture.
As a large bearded lumberjack I approve of other groups using the traditional garb of my culture - not only the flannel shirt, but the high heels and bra as well.
The Grinning Viking yes Monty python reference 😀😀😀😀😀😀
Im Asian. Im happy that asians are getting represented in Hollywood or wherever. However I was raised that you should be judged by skill set. I don't care if an asian role is played by a white role or vice versa and the many possibilities. If the actor regardless of race is the most talented and skilled for the role I honestly couldn't care less. Great actors make great movies not skin color. You could go back and bring up Hamilton. They cast members based on skill set and not historical race. George Washington could be played by a white person one season and a black person the next. Personally I would hate for me to get a role because of my skin color and not because of my skill set. It makes me feel underserving of the role because I didn't earn it. If someone regardless of race or ethnicity would present that role, regardless of the role, better than I because they were better in that skill set so be it.
The problem I have with "whitewashing" is not that it's racist, but lazy. These studios take the easy route and pick a big name or just look at a small group of people. If they took the effort to try and cast people of correct race in these roles, they could potentially discover a lot of talented people who wouldn't have otherwise been found. Look at Moana, for example. They actually went to Hawaii and found a native Hawaiin to voice a Polynesian character. She would have probably never gotten such a big role if Disney hadn't looked out side the box, or even discovered at all. I don't expect all studios to go to different countries to find stas, but if they did try to diversify just a little bit, they may find a diamond or two in the rough.
ShiningDialga same thing could be said about blackwashing too.
clivetchurl And I think if we did the math we would find out that based on population size, Hollywood has been doing a good job for decades. Casting based on population breakdown is clearly a thing. Token black is a thing because black people are still just 13% of the population, despite how much time we spend talking about black people. Asians are just 3%. I think you could probably make a logical argument about the sizeable population of Latinos and Hispanics being underrepresented not in casting, but in cultural representation in TV and movies on the whole. But then you get into even more sticky grey areas like Latinos and Hispanics historically feeling closer to Caucasian roots than other parts of their ancestry. That can even apply to Asians. I know Asian Americans who are 3rd generation who feel closer to the their 'white' American/European heritage than their Asian heritage.
And this shit gets so complicated and fuzzy that it is just better to not talk about. I personally would cast or hire the best person while also trying to maintain loyal to the source material.
ShiningDialga I want to add to this comment the fact that in a lot of cases the ethnicity and cultural heritage of a character actually has an impact on their worldview/actions (for example, I don't think the Death Note anime would be the same if all the characters were the same but lived on the US or Britain).
GoldenGail3 Except white stars are far more common, and thus easier to find. You'd be more likely to end up with another B-lister.
In the new death note movie they criticize the lead white actor for playing an asian character but when people spoke up about The character L who is played by a black actor they were condemned as racist ... just wow
.
.
Saudi gucci Most death note fans weren't happy with cast of L as well.
mayla Roll while this is true. I have seen many posts of people i went to school with only complaining about who they casted light as.
mayla Roll go check the articals when they cast a white actor they call it whitewashing but when they cast a black actor they call "at least attempted to "diversify" their cast" that is a direct quote from one of nany articles
Both actors should back down. I'm sorry. As a big fan of certain characters, it seriously bothers me to have those characters I love and know, growing and knowing them a very specific way, and then havinf them completely changed. I would rather more ethnicities be included by having more original characters that are badass, rather than replacing set characters. White, black, asian, whatever. They should stay true to the character, regardless of the ethnicity. I'm absolutely not for casting a different ethnicity for a character known for having a very specific background and appearance.
AGREED
Well I think your issue with the change is based of of societies perception of race. Skin color is like any other human trait like height. Now would you mind if there was a 5 foot 7 inches iron man rather than a 6 foot (just random heights). It wouldn't nearly be as big of a deal. My issue is when they change the background and culture of that character because that takes away from the character him or herself.
I disagree... A little. I think the best person for the job should be based on talent (within the budget of course). If they opened auditions and they make their picks from the best deliveries, I see no problems. Now, if they reached out to him and asked him to audition? That might be different. That being said, I respect any actor that holds to their own convictions when faced with turning down a paycheck.
It kinda sounds like you are asking Tom Cruise to be the next ironman. I'm down. :)
JustThatLauren unless the plot is driven by the characters race (such as the character specifically being an activist or a metaphor or anything crucial to the plot) then it's ridiculous to say it matters what race that character actually was. When you take crucial things away by whitewashing or the actors didn't live up to the role, yeah, that sucks. But to *restrict* the casting director and everyone to only casting physical embodiments of that character, there's a far greater chance of that also sucking because maybe they didn't deserve the role and only got it because they have the right 'look'. It's called acting, not modeling. Yeah, growing up with this image in your head and being excited to see the -*real* thing might be jarring when you realize that directors and writers and actors are gonna do their own thing and be disappointed..but if you appreciate acting and movies as standalones (which they are) instead of expecting some literal perfect movie version of an original then you can maybe appreciate the new angles and story as a separate work :)
On Hellboy: I'm a black male, I'm a bisexual person on top of that, I'd however not ask for a character who is white and straight to be changed into a black bisexual for my benefit. I was not on board when Roland in Dark Tower was casted as Idris, I am not on board with Domino being played by a black woman and no I'm not on board with Hellboy casting a black actress as a character who is a Irish Redhead from the 1950s. Diversity mattering shouldn't be only in the cases where the character wasn't white and now is, but where a character was white and now isn't. This also goes into creator intention as well. I'd be angry if a story I created where a character was white was cast as someone else as much as I'd be angry about a Latino character being made into an Asian or white character.
You can't say that, you're a male!
DOmino is part of a cultural majority... goth/alternative... just keep whatever race AND personality the character has if it's already established, that comics and other media is mostly white is complete and utter bullshit, its a waaaay to widespread misconception, people just don't bother to LOOK for other characters other than the superduper popular ones.
However more minority characters in unestablished work is definatly needed... it is why are these actors are being jammed into these characters in the first place...
This just goes to show you that anybody will do anything to push a narrative or get famous. Faking hate crimes is horrible and could ruin someone's life.
Domo Jax I agree.
Domo Jax It's sad people do this
TheOgTrollKing I'm black but okay 👌🏽
And here I thought you were referring to the Ed Skrein story... lol. But seriously - faking a hate crime is pretty horrible - and it appears that 'all sides' are doing it these days. Identity politics is destroying our society.
Checked shirts are more known for lumberjacks or farmers, this is reaching at it's finest. BUT that price is ridiculous
TheFoleyThree Maybe around your neck of the woods, but that is not true everywhere.
Most high quality flannels are at least 90 dollars
... But Woolrich Woolen Mills first put out the Buffalo Plaid shirt in the 1850s.
mainetoday.com/fashion-3/a-brief-history-of-buffalo-plaid/
They were popular with people who worked outdoors. Like lumberjacks.
ThatOneKid Come on man, unless your mom was going to high school in 1914 (when Paul Bunyan was gaining notoriety) I highly doubt that latinos were the first to wear flannels and if anything they're appropriating Scottish culture because plaid owes its origins to Scottish clan tartans. Woolrich created its red Buffalo Check ( MacGregor Red and Black tartan in the registry of official tartans)plaid design in 1850. And last I checked it's just a shirt, so I don't see why people are getting so anal about it, just because they wore it one way in an Instagram picture doesn't mean you have to wear it that way
ThatOneKid Calm down it's a fucking shirt.
12:10 Is the South Korean Air Force sponsored by Coca-Cola?
Ruby Roo z had the exact same thought.
They should switch to Pepsi; they're good at resolving conflicts.
I'm from South Korea and I actually find this comment funny
Disney I think
South Korea for the win! (even though I don't live there)
As a Canadian I'm offended that they have a plaid shirt in their store. Stealing Canadian culture how disgusting!
I'm from Minnesota and that's Canadian enough. I am also offended.
Chris L I know, eh?! So outraged, I might have to step out for a second to chill. Maybe go for an iced cap.
Chris L say sorry
Plaid isn't Canadian, you thieving Kanuck! ;P
Renyk Bellesteres if you're going on a Timmy's run grab me a double double buddy
No. God no, there is NO difference in casting white actor as black character or black actor as white character. Treat the characters with respect. I'm so sick of including black characters (just as an example, insert any race instead), just for the sake of including them. If they are good actors and if the role was written for them, all the power, I'll be happy to see more diverse talents. But don't cast already established characters as different races. Create new ones.
Just as a non-movie example. I don't mind as much as many the fact, that Marvel now has black Spider-man, arabic Ms.Marvel or black Iron (wo)Man. Because they didn't say, for example, "Tony Stark is now black". They created a new character and passed the mantle. Hell, I may actually like Miles Morales more than Peter Parker these days. But if they said out of the blue "hey, Peter is actually black" I would be like... wtf? Screw you, Marvel.
SimonCleric SAME
Agree with most of it, but imo they should create an entirely new hero rather than have them riding off the back of a previous character. I don't care if there's a second iron white, cis, straight man called tony stark. Just create a new hero.
So we'll stated. I feel like exact same way. And yes I know many comics of old were mainly white males, but I think newer comics show it is easy enough to make a new character for a minority inclusion. Rather than erase the history of the current series for no good reason.
Also: white people have close to zero problems when a character gets blackwashed (Morgen Freeman in the Shawshank Redemption, Ruth Negga in Preacher, Idris Elba in the Dark Tower). White people are way more grown up about this, it's time minorities (especially black people) should grow up too. You are not under represented. If there is one minority that might have a case about being under represented it's probably only latino's.
I agree with what you have to say, but since no one is writing roles for them, that's why they have to be squeezed in. Also another reason why some white actors are squeezed out. There are POC original characters being cast by white people (recent example Ed Skrein backing down from an Asian role) and vice versa, but it's only because lately media is full of sequels and remakes. So the only way to make it different is to change the demographic, let's be real. But yeah, I agree. If they made more roles for POC, pretty sure this entire issue wouldn't be as drastic as it has been.
Hey Phil, I'm in Japan and got the text messages and my town sounded the alarm. It was pretty scary, the sirens were loud and it woke me up. I just read "it seems a missile has been launched from North Korea" and freaked out a bit because I live on the second story and the message said get underground NOW. Then I got to work after everything calmed down and all my Japanese colleagues were laughing and were a little more cheerful than usual. One of my coworkers even said their kids slept through it and joked that at least they can sleep through a real attack. It's been a day already and most people have seemed to forgot about it. Everyone is carrying on as normal now. If it happens again, I'll probably just stay in bed or in my apartment. There's not much you can do when a freaking missile is headed your way anyway.
Definitely the rudest way I've ever been woken up. Fuck you, Kim Jong Un.
Same!!! It was a pretty rude awakening. I panicked for those fifteen minutes until they sent out the second message, and then I still had to go to work in an hour. UGH! No one even mentioned it that day, and we only talked briefly about it this afternoon. It seems that even though it was the first time they tested that specific alert system, no one was really concerned, lol.
SnickerFriend2013 Yes fuck that alarm of a human
laughing about shit (or beeing more cheerful tan usual) and not talking about things (or flat out ignoring them) you cant change are very japanese coping mechanisms tho. if i was you i would def go to a celar or bunker if the alarm sound again. you might not survive a nuclear missle anyways but if its just a rocket its way better to be underground.
SnickerFriend2013 Hey, I'm curious, what is the perspective in Japan? How do Japanese people think the North Korea situation should be handled?
Ex Navy here living/working in Yokosuka Japan, I didn't even hear about this until around 1430.
The new RUclips logo actually stands for "Brand first then you"
I don't think people understand the ethnic make up of the United States and Hollywood, if the charters race or gender isn't a part of the story whoever gives the best audition deserves that role.
Adrianna J but wasn't Hermione described as black skinned in the book?
xdarkwolf2255 She was described as "having a darker, tanned skintone". That doesn't necessarily mean black, but it could, it could also mean latina or just a tanned white person.
This should be how all TV and Movies should work (within reason)
jakeupinfinity Daimio's Japanese heritage is very important to his character. It's hard to explain without spoiling the storyline but it would be really hard to change his characters background without changing the motivation of the character entirely. And based on the info they've put out, I don't think that was their plan. The actor has a very little bit of Asian background so I think they just planned on having him play a Japanese character still. I don't think they planned on just making the character white
A year of jail time seems spot on to me. He wasted our officers time leaving them chasing this nonsense when they could have been actually helping people...but sadly he will probably get off with a few months of probation. Our judicial system is jacked up
Shame they don't apply this standard to the thousands of made-up hate crimes the left perpetuated following Trump's election. Or the millions of false rape accusations.
Filing a fake police report should come with a HEAVY punishment to ensure nobody does it.
I don't think there is a difference at all, if she's playing a character who in the comics was a white Irish woman with red hair then she should be that.
Joey Z I think white people have enough representation.
That is generally what happens when white majority countries make films.. No different from Asian majority countries casting mostly Asians..etc..etc. But if anything. I would say that business, government, colleges and film go out of their way in most cases to include minorities (to the point of over representation in many cases). Even if they aren't always the most qualified.
SushiRoll Speaks I feel like being true to an original character is also important, especially if that's the reason Ed got backlash for his casting.
SushiRoll Speaks And I'd also like to point out the lack of Irish representation in movies as well...
+SushiRoll Speaks I don't think the purpose of fiction is to represent the audience. Do you?
I have a rather mixed opinion about character representation in movies. I'm of the opinion if a character's race/ethnicity is inherent or important to their development and backstory, then the representation of that character should definitely be accurate to the source material. In short, if the ethnicity is relevant to the plot, proper representation should occur. If not, feel free to use whichever actor fits the role.
sinkor22 maybe because they were good actors, and it's a childrens/family movie. It's literally a fantasy world where there is magic, talking furniture, and a beastman. But black people ruin it for you. k
SInkor22 He just said that you idiot. If it is in Medieval Europe then the back story of all those crusaders is important... Use your brain. He's talking about characters like Spiderman etc being black or whatever. Ethnicity is not important for that character to work like with crusader sergeants and shit.
Are any of the ethnicities in Beauty and the Beast particularly plot relevant? Do any of those black characters have something in their background that is related to their ethnicity? I'd say no. if no characters have something plot relevant connecting to their ethnicity, directors have free range in casting whoever they wish.
+TheOuss121
The plot relies on the setting.
The setting relies on having realistic racial representation.
Therefore, the plot relies on having realistic racial representation.
TheOuss121 couldnt agree more
So so so so so so so so many fake Philly d accounts
Trojianmaru lol i know it's annoying but I've been noticing it on just about every RUclipsr I've watched this week
I cant believe people still fall for it smh
Alex Stark OOOoOH ReaLlY
Nuke_DESTROYERS 2 report them and move on
Darksora79 lol, rude
As a latina, I don't think Kylie and Kendall stole anything. While plaid shirts, in America, were popularized by Cholas, the design of a plaid shirt originated from Scotland. Cholas did not come up with the idea of plaid. It would be different if plaid shirts had some sort of major significance in Chola culture, but it doesn't. If Kylie and Kendall were to start selling Native American headdress as "accessories" then that would be cultural theft considering headdress are incredibly significant in Native culture and only certain members of tribes can wear them. In terms of selling the shirt, I don't think they were doing anything wrong and this is coming from a person who doesn't even like them. Anyone can wear a plaid shirt!
You can't tell me ravers wearing Native American headresses or Rachel Dolezal pretending to be black isn't fucked up in some way?
SinnedNogara it's not, well that Rachael girl has a few screws loose, but no it's not fucked up.
To Release is To Resolve what about stealing valor?
SinnedNogara No, that's incredibly fucked up. I agree with you there.
please don't give them ideas.
The way I see it, if someone of one race is getting shit for playing the character of another race, then the same should go for all others. If not, it's racist no? One race is being hated on for one thing but the other race doesn't get hate for it??? Just doesn't make sense to me
Chase Burns i think it really boils down to inclusion and diversity. hollywood keeps hiring white actors (to portray different races and ethnics) because they know that it will sell better. this results in POC actors having incredibly little representation in films and most of the roles that they do get, are just bottom line stupid and stereotypical.
Phil, I am a fashion designer and I personally believe that there was nothing wrong with what the Jenners did in this case. Yes, the design is lazy, and shitty, but it is a popular look and it is okay to barrow in fashion and to be inspired as long as you respect your inspiration.
Jamontique Q how do I break into the bussiness?
My only issue is the price. Wtf kind of flannel are they using?
Jamontique Q I think the issue is the lack of attribution to the origin of the style. You can't just take kimono for instance and sell it as your work without stating where it's from and what you're doing with it.
Flanel shirts are so popular in multiple styles/ cultures claiming them as one style seems odd
Chris Gough a plaid shirt doesn't belong to a specific culture though
It's definitely worrying that North Korea is freely testing out missiles over Japan.
R.I.P Anime :(
I can't even begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been getting alerts like that and waking up to sirens blaring. I want to think that nothing is going to happen but as the weeks pass it really seems how Phil says, uncertain.
Yes, exactly. and more.
Can we stop using the term "garbage person"? It's an insult to this country's great sanitation workers.
Chris Crosby he means a person made of garbage
Geraldine Hughes Understood, but it sounds terrible and confusing. If he wanted to make it clearer he's talking about a person made of garbage, he should've called him a Jake Paul.
Black guy here. The obsession with political correctness has reached alarming levels in this country. How have we reached a point where a man is forced to hire a writer/publicist to write out a 250 word apology begging the public's forgiveness for accepting a movie role? Like, it's just gross at this point.
It reached alarming levels many years ago. Now it's full blown AIDS.
lightsout4u1 Another token black guy uttering what his white friends taught him to say.
It's gone too far your right.
TheWalkingBritt Wait, so you're saying that black people don't have an opinion unless it aligns with yours? That's the most racist thing I've read in this entire comment section. Acting as if black people were slaves to you and should only say what you want.
I reported you for hate speech, racist arsehole.
/S
I just took stuff out of context as much as you did.
TheWalkingBritt
This comment is a perfect example of what hypocrisy looks like folks.
That terrifying story about the North Korea situation really was the perfect place to leave the show today. ~150,000,000 Japanese now upset by the thought that they might wake up one morning just in time to see themselves and all their loved ones destroyed by a missile strike (and 50,000,000 South Koreans probably feeling something similar). And in the US we're upset about a plaid shirt and upset that the guy chosen to make believe as an imaginary person doesn't resemble a comic book character closely enough.
Seriously, even for first world problems, this is some pathetic shit.
studyeye yep
reading through the comments, all I see is talk about ethnicity. It is kind of gut wrenching considering exactly what you stated about the last story. I figured it would have been discussed more, but people are worried about shirts, and race.
Studyeye, have you ever heard of the bicycle shed effect? It's a concept that when people are confronted by very complex problems they will gravitate toward simple easy to understand things (i.e. the group designated to design a nuclear power plant waste all their time discussing the bicycle shed in the parking lot instead of designing the nuclear generator). I think sometimes our "first world problems" are like that, we see the complex issue, and ignore it for something simpler (we think) to understand and argue about. North Korea is a very real threat to everyone. It threatens the US, and the stability of part of the most massively populated parts of the earth. It's a problem that has been going on for over 50 years and some of our greatest minds have either ignored it, or just concluded it was best to leave it be. It's easier to discuss fashion, perceived cultural slights or other things. It isn't right, but the bicycle effect seems to be a very well documented instinct. Don't forget even now when our own countrymen are suffering, and we still gravitate to the salacious and inconsequential. No offense toward Phil, the man has 15 minutes or so and can only accurately discuss so much, and we talked Hurricane Harvey yesterday, but my point is, we would rather talk about the inconsequential rather than discuss the hard things that are probably more necessary.
studyeye preach it !
Robert Callahan, really good points. It sound like the bicycle shed effect would've had a big influence on how we're (not) talking about this issue -- too complex, and way too many unknowns to truly wrap one's head around.
Another big contributor, I think, is whatever the effect is that over the past decades has had us doing so little on global warming. We've known for a long time that North Korea's nuclear ambitions would pose a serious problem. But we only knew that intellectually, and didn't feel the immediacy since nuclear programs are long, complex things. And taking action on North Korea is always so tough, with their allies and with the unpredictability of whatever ruler, etc. And so the situation has gone from bad to worse.
Charging that much for a shirt like that is just plain stealing. Please arrest them.
I wish I could refute that.
I generally agree with you on the whole hellboy casting, but if they want to make it about race and making it consistent to the source material, then they should be consistent with their beliefs. Not just pick and choose.
No difference between Ed and Sasha. I agree with you Phil, so long as the character is treated with respect and played well, anyone should be able to play them, unless race or gender is important to the development and background of the character.
which , it ALWAYS is ....
like Gods of Egypt (played by a fucking Scottish dude) and Genghis khan right? both were played by white men lol It never happen as you said it should I don't see the point to your argument at all.
Cody Bassett The point is that race is important.
I hate it when you're so early there are no conversations in the comment section yet
Zorkz hi
Zorkz yep just scammers.
This is RUclips, you aren't going to get quality conversations.
Cool Cool whatcha talking about, troll 😂. There's *always* quality conversations on RUclips especially in the PhilyD comment section haha.
Im sorry im kind of new to this channel but
Did he just say we've been philed in

I've been watching for a year now, I just noticed that...

I would love to see more Asian-American representation in the media. Looking back on my childhood, I realized that the lack of this representation really lended in effecting my self-esteem. Growing up in the Mid-West, there weren't many other Asian-Americans, and the lack of representation in the media (among other things) led to me forming a very toxic mentality of hating my skin color, because simply I thought it wasn't good enough as being white. This is one of the reasons I was attracted to RUclips at first, because I found Asian-American content creators that were just normal people, and not the overly used stereotypes people will attach to all Asians. Whitewashing may seem silly to some, but to others it might be important. What surprised me most is the film's response in that they would be more considerate of the authenticity of the role. It's great to see that Ed's actions might have actually changed something.
This, I find this too relatable. As a half asian guy who loves film and TV it kinda sucked growing up with so few heroes to look up too that looked similar to how I did. I think it'd be awesome to see a little more asian and mixed race representation on the big screen.
Its crazy how films from Asia that are adapted into 'Western' hollywood films lack Asian Americans. Its actually comical because they will sprinkle a few black characters usually men, because you know diversity and thats about it. Its like they are afraid to cast Asian americans if they aren't playing the geek, nerd, or freshie. I dont get it
Also as a minority myself, this seems kind of dumb.
Even when I was a child I didn't have to have a brown Latina heroine to be happy with myself. My country didn't exactly have a good cinema industry so I mostly watched cartoons and European/North American movies. Skin, gender, nationality and even religion are not necessary for a character to be relatable (or at least for well-written characters).
If you want to feel identified with someone when you're a child, you have your parents, your neighbours, your teachers, national idols and even classmates. The self-steem of a child/teen/young adult shouldn't be based on how many people look like them in films.
Just saying, this could lead serious emotional issue after a while.
That is great for you, but people have different experiences, and it was very different for me growing up. I was not surrounded by a large Asian-American community (almost non-existent), and I was also adopted. So, I had white parents who could teach me nothing about my own culture, and on top of this, I grew up in Kansas, in a largely white community that is very quick to point out the color of your skin. It is hard to feel identified with your parents, neighbors, teachers, national idols, classmates, when it is made clear to you at a very young age that you are not like them. Of course, ideally yes, skin, gender, nationality, are not a necessity for a character to be relatable, but the reality is that sometimes it can be for some people. And, as I said, the "self-esteem" thing is not entirely based on the film industry, but I believe it is a contributing factor (at least in my own story).
I hope this is very clear to you that I am not blaming this all on the industry. I am sharing this with you in hopes that you see that people have different stories and different backgrounds, even if we share the similarity of being a minority. In an ideal world, something as ridiculous as skin color wouldn't have to matter, even in film. The reality though, is that for some, it matters.
I understand your feelings. But I have to repeat myself here "Just saying, this could lead serious emotional issue after a while."
I don't understand how someone can be so upset over a plaid shirt. I just makes no sense!
Flannel as a fabric is a Welsh thing and plaid as a pattern is a Scottish thing. Both countries are and have been majority white so technically Cholos also culturally appropriate.
Yeahhhh that's why a lot of the arguments about it were ridiculous.
They're appropriating lumberjack culture!
I honestly expected the argument to be that they're stealing lesbian culture cause yes I've seen that argument before
The ability to portrait a character well is more than just the color of their skin.
My Nigga Hulk Hogan This
My Nigga Hulk Hogan I don't Really care about the Actor's skin color from the comics to the live action what I do care about is the hipocracy of the situation People shamed The Actor because he wasn't the correct ethnicity to the original but they have no problem when it is a person of color doing the exact same thing that's the problem for me
My Nigga Hulk Hogan I agree, actors, oddly enough, are cast based on their abilities and how well they managed to portray the character during their casting.
but if their race has something to do with the story or the story is placed in a place like Japan where 90+% of the population is of this one race and all, then I think that a character that fits the story and its background is better.
This
Fellow Prisoner: What ya in for?
Witt: Uhhhhh.
Good job Ed! I am disabled and queer. When Glee first aired, I was ecstatic at the inclusion of Artie-a paralyzed nerdy singer and guitarist in a wheelchair. Later, I found out that Kevin McjHale who played the role wasn't in fact disabled. This was extremely disappointing to myself and the disabled community at large. In contrast, the same show also cast other disabled actors in disabled roles. These situations were and are important because representation matters. Casting non-disabled actors in disabled roles takes away opportunities from disabled performers to be seen and heard. Media helps shape how society perceives things. Disability is seen as inferior, broken, pitied. I have literally been asked who "cares for me" before because the world cannot comprehend an independent disabled woman in a power wheelchair who has a "normal" life. Media representation helps bust those stereotypes. I can understand why this is a non-issue for many. But if I would have seen a character like Artie on TV as a child it would have made me feel significantly less isolated.
North Korea is like that really annoying kid in the back of the class that keeps throwing stuff at you just to try and get a reaction.
Max Geiser 😂😂😂😂 true
Nailed it! The question is if we all act like the kid isn't there will he stop?
But then the bully with the big mac and the bald eagle stands up and the annoying kid starts screaming for the teacher
Max Geiser except that child has the power to bring great harm to others if ignored
Nice job stealing an old comment. Funny AND origional!
Plaid originated in Scotland in the 1500s. Those plaid shirts like the Jenners have were popularized in the 90s grunge scene and appropriated by Chola culture (or maybe they just wanted to be part of the grunge trend?) Everyone in the 90s wore those shirts.
Pink Puffin I know right🙄 the shirt looks so basic
This is the only way I have any idea about what's happening in the world, thanks Philly for being my news feed 😂✌️
*Peace from manhattan*
Honestly i don't care much about anime adaptations being particularly "perfect" when it comes to making sure the characters are the same ethnicity, or that the setup is the same (ie recording in the US when the anime is obviously Japan). I feel like sticking too close to canon would stifle production too much.
So now plaid shirts have been copyrighted?? I mean yeah it's overprized but still wtf
Anybody else wonder why Hollywood uses a bunch of British actors playing American characters instead of... well, Americans!!!
MadRespeck seriously?
MadRespeck I can't tell if you're joking or not
Katy Jenkins Donovan- actually in not lol, look at every major Hollywood film, instead of getting American actors they use British actors that use American accents
I personally do get a little upset when I see characters I love portrayed by people with completely different looks especially in something like graffic novels or comics were you actually get to see what the characters look like, it just changes the story to me and it does go both ways Asian to white, redheaded irishwoman to black they both make me a bit crazy (I'm Mexican not sure if it changes a thing) and I do think that there should be pressure to cast both characters equally either stick to the change or stick to the proper characters
Consuelo Martinez comic franchises usually go along with the "infinite universes" rule, so to be upset that a character look differently is completely contradicting.
Going by the inifite universes rule, then there is a black captain America, a female iron man, a homosexual thor, and every other kind of combination you can put them in.
Thr marvel and dc movies are in their OWN universes( that why theyre called CINEMATIC universes)
To get upset about changes is idiotic
Agent22 I'm not saying it's rational it's just a pet peeve for me and it's in general like with movies based on books or TV shows I guess I just have this certain idea and my mind just runs with it so when it's taken out of that context I get a little frustrated I guess
Consuelo Martinez the only thing that should matter with choosing a person to play the character is if the person can properly play the part, however this can be thrown out the window if there is a specific trait the character has is important to the story or the character.
I think the only improvement race change was Nick Fury. Fury becoming a black guy makes him memorable
Carlos Owens I'm aware that Mexican is not a race, I mention it because I feel like people from different nationalities have different takes on everything
For the Hollywood Hellboy reboot issue, 200% agree with you, like, can we not just have something happen without the world being butthurt for something that in the end, doesn't really hurt anyone tbh.
The ghost in the shell movie wasn't white washing at all. The actual soul of the person in Major's body was a Japanese woman but the "shell" or body that they put her inside of is clearly white. Even in the manga she had blue eyes and the original Japanese animated movie. Also they always refered to her as just Major in all of the series and every piece of content for most of the time. It wasn't white washing at all, Japanese media is capable of having white characters just how western media has Asian characters.
Exactly. Her name didn't change either. She clearly had a Asian mother and her name was exactly what Phil said. That was a fail from Phil and anyone who thought Gits was white washes didn't understand the source material
Frankly, any comic or book or anything else when adapted for TV and movies should stick as close to the source material as possible. Whites plays white characters, Blacks play Black characters, Asians play Asian characters and so on. That is all that should matter as it will keep the main fan base happy.
And on a side note, if SJWs and leftists are so obsessed with making sure every color gets a fair shot, why do they make it their life goal to demonize and belittle white people simply for existing. The fact is, if a White person is cast to play an Asian character and is forced to turn down the role because of the backlash, a Black person cast to play a White character should be expected to do the same, no ifs, ands, or buts. You don't correct historical discrimination against minorities by discriminating against Whites. Those doing it now are no better than those who did it in the past.
shrekbeard Instead of "backlash", don't you mean "Blacklash"😂😂
I think that's true for remakes, but it's different for things "based on" the story. Just like how West side story is based off of Romeo and Juliet, it's alright to shift ethnicities and locations and stuff like that in order to change the story. If the story isn't good anymore, that just makes it a bad film, not a racist one.
Rick Harris what if it's set in a country which isn't diverse.
if a film was in Japan. it would be strange for almost every person to be white, or black or brown. so I'd say that in certain situations race should be taken into account.
Funny thing is, it's not even discriminating against whites in this situation. If the argument is that POC are descriminated against and had a terrible history, they seriously need to open a history book. I've heard people say things like "Well, the Irish aren't discriminated anymore!" They need to take a trip to Britain, then bite their damn tongues.
yippykiay13 don't know if you're saying the Irish used to be discriminated against in Britain or if they still are because noone I know discriminates against Irish people
If its a historical role, or based in history, you should keep the ethnicities the same, but if its not, It shouldn't matter.
er mer gerd white washing in hollywerd ........ black dude in fantastic four and a black girl in Annie and idris elba as Heimdall....... can we move along ?
Since when is ~any~ style the property of only a certain culture. So if I wear a plaid shirt, suspenders, and jeans I should apologize to lumberjacks for appropriating their "style"? Or if I wear a plaid shirt with a crop top and the top button buttoned, I should apologize to cholas? No one culture owns a clothing style as only theirs and this issue (among others) is getting completely out of hand. How does wearing a certain article of clothing a certain way disenfranchise ANYONE? As for the price of the shirt...I can go on several websites and see a plain t-shirt priced at over $100. I shop at stores that are within my budget, and I don't malign those that aren't. What are we going to fight about next?! There are more important things going on in the world today, people.
As a "POC" I kind of agree with you Phillip Defranco, on the Hellboy thing. I was talking to my wife about it (she is white) we both kind of agree that a character should be cast as close to the character they can when it would matter to the character. For example Luke Cage being a white guy dealing with the plight of the black man in Harlem would be a bit silly. Just like Captain America being a black man leading white folks during the 50's would be a bit dumb.
I don't think it matters that much. I get the call of inclusion and diversity in casting in the arts. I would like to see that more. That should mean that you may get a black actor to play a character that was white in the original material (Like Idris Alba in Gunslinger) or you might get a white guy like Ed Skrien playing a character who was originally Asian, or a black woman playing an Irish character.
I think the question should be is the performer a good fit for the role, and does it fundamentally change the character. Is race a fundamental characteristic that will undermine the story if it is changed, if not it shouldn't matter (and yes I am aware of the fact that the gunslinger being white is a huge part of his character, but it Stephen King was good with it who am I to judge).
I don't think the solution to the diversity issue in Hollywood is White actors and actresses being very sorry for being white and turning down roles, I think the solution is in the writers and producers and casting folks making great roles for ethnically diverse casts and casting movies in a diverse fashion that doesn't betray the core of the story or the characters.
TheHowlettJames Jesus was closer to black than white. While I think it's ridiculous to call casting a black person in a white role inclusion and casting a white guy in a ethnic role white washing there also needs to be artistic liberty allowed in any adaptation. People need to realize that none of this is real or matters. The only time casting choices matter is historical pieces otherwise cast whoever the fuck you want and there public needs to calm the fuck down.
TheHowlettJames DAMN you're one hell of an enraged guy. Calm down, and read what he said once again. He said we should respect the races when it's important to understand a character, but when it doesn't matter just let anyone plays it.
Also Jesus was Arab/Jew, not white/blond so what's your opinion on this matter ?
Jon-Mark Jenkins as far as the Gunslinger goes you can't really do the drawing of the three in the 21st century. You would get a lot of hate from many different angles for portraying Deta Walker as an animal. Her character is an absolute animal but you would have activist saying that they chose to have the black woman be an animal.
TheHowlettJames at that time in the Middle East Jesus could very well have been black or Middle Eastern. The odds that he was of pure European blood is incredibly low.
TheHowlettJames Uh, Jesus was Hebrew, so was Moses.
As far as I'm concerned... plaid shirts aren't just Latinx culture? So what, lumberjack culture is being attacked too? Maybe I am wrong, but plaid is kind of a common print. This is coming from someone who actually despises everything Kylie and Kendall stand for. I think some people just want to hate them because it's popular to do so, and not for a real reason, like them ACTUALLY stealing art, or clothing.
I agree. How tf is an oversized plaid shirt stealing someone's culture? People should be more mad at the insane price, not turning it into an appropriation issue..
It's the thing where you button up the top buttons and nothing else so it splits as seen in their instagram image, which is common among Latino gangsters. People got triggered over nothing.
It's obvious they were inspired by it and wanted to sell clothing like it, but people for some reason thought that a white person wearing the same clothes is somehow racism.
People should be mad it's $100 fucking dollars, not because they're copying some gang bangers looks.
Casey Cashew lol I know right.
Cholas be complaining that someone stole what they stole. smh
Plaid pattern is a Scottish thing and it's actually called tartan. I'm other words, Cholos culturally appropriated Scottish culture. Also flannel as a fabric is a Welsh thing
Why, when talking about color-changed characters in recent movies, did Phil not mention the backlash/miscasting against the fact that L (the major antagonist) of the Netflix adaptation of Death Note was black instead of Asian but referenced that the main leads were white instead of Asian? Is changing the skin color of characters fine as long as it isn't changed to white?
Youris Smith Wasn't L from Britain like N? Or am I mistaken (long time since I watched the anime)
No l was actually from America I thought
Youris Smith it probably didn't get anywhere near the same backlash so he probably didn't know
Youris Smith he literally never said that, asshole. No one did. The entire casting choice was shit, and that's been the agreed consensus for awhile now.
Youris Smith because it was an adaptation not a remake more people were mad because all of the character races where changed not just L's
people who falsely report crimes should get a sentence equal to that of whatever crime they're accusing someone of committing
I believe that making false allegations should carry crimes befitting of the crime being falsified. Allegations like this can have serious repercussions. While we live in a legal atmosphere of "innocent before proven guilty," we've seen many instances of society passing judgement BEFORE the courts do. While this particular example didn't include another person being directly accused, we've seen it all before. All it takes is some rando matching the description, that rando's identity to be released and the fury of the internet would come crashing down. All of this isn't even accounting for the fact that crimes that are falsely reported diminish genuine reports of that crime. How many people are going to be skeptical of this kind of assault because this guy faked it?
If it were up to me, maybe people should get somewhere between half of or the full sentence for the crime they are faking.
The huge difference between Ed Skrein's decision and that of Sasha Lane is probably etiquette. Ed's decision is obviously from the heart and no hesitation. It's not that Sasha has no etiquette, but it seems that even for a mountain of gold, Ed will still turn down the offer, while on the other hand, it might not be a big of a deal for Sasha, especially when grabbing a golden opportunity and to earn a decent living.
Creative North well said
Creative North He's obviously aware of the growing racism issues nowadays
True. With whitewashing or not, anyone can make decision to accept a role that don't actually fit his/her character, appearance, or whatnot. It's your conscience and sensitivity that should guide you when making decisions for things like that.
Creative North She should step down to.
She doesn't have to step down, neither did Ed but it's fucking ridiculous to bitch about Ed and NOT Sasha.
I think unless a character's skin colour or location/origin is important to the story or used as a plot point, it should *NOT* matter who's playing them.
Exactly! Like how the Dark Tower casting is terrible because Roland's race is relevant to the story in that universe. Death Note's story and characters aren't tied to race. You can argue it's tied to a location, but white and black people can live in any location...
I've never read the Hellboy comics, so they might have a point with race there. It may be important to the character.
In a perfect and unbiased world, yes, it shouldn't matter. But Hollywood is innately not equal when it comes to representation, race, and gender. Taking away the little existing characters that poc have, and the tendency in the industry to cast white actors over poc in "raceless" roles is why whitewashing and race is always such a big deal and conversation, and why "blackwashing" or "insert race washing" isn't a thing.
Joe, what you're saying is that white people shouldn't be allowed to play something because you think other races deserve to be there instead. That's the very definition of racism. Discrimination based on race. How dare you tell someone they can't do something because of their skin color.
Don't forget that they casted Margaret of Anjou a literal historical figure also known as THE WHITE QUEEN as some random black woman, just because.
I agree with you on not caring about what race/gender plays a character in a film/ tv adaptation. That's where creative freedom comes in. Why do we, as a society, always have to make casting malicious?
As I understand, most Japanese people did not care AT ALL about the changing of Major's "ethnicity" in Ghost. They were mostly happy that a big name was cast in a role that is culturally significant. Sometimes, I feel the backlash about ethnicity casting is done mostly by white people.
The Character Major is in an Entirely Artificial Body and has been in Several prior but not since. it could be what ever color they like, as It is not her natural body
Heath Northam I bet if she was bright blue and ambiguously gendered nobody would care who the actor was.
the backlash was also strongly felt by asian americans who are surrounded by white media and rarely see themselves represented in major roles. japanese people may have not cared because they have plenty of their own movies in their country
“What issue could there possibly be with casting her? The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her,” he told IGN via email. “Even if her original body (presuming such a thing existed) were a Japanese one, that would still apply.”
The creator of ghost in the shell didn't care. Don't know why everyone else did.
the movie flopped anyway. most whitewashed movies flop
Since I am Mexican I not allowed to dye my hair blond, straighten my hair, put my hair in boxer braids because it is not my culture? That is what many of these "woke" people are saying (not here in RUclips, I seen a lot of Instagram pages saying this) I believe that is absurd! I think we should ALL be allowed to wear the type of clothing, hair, etc every culture has to offer. Of course you can't go out acting/dressing like a stereotypical Mexican or a stereotype of another culture and making fun of it, cause that is legitimately racist. Any race can and should able to wear any other fashion another race has invented. As long as they don't go "oh yeah I invented this style." : - )
Agreed. Plus, no one culture is original anyways. Humans have been taking from each other since the beginning of time.
+Nug Humper Pretty much. We have been ripping each other off for thousands of years.
Ximena Arredondo
Blond and straight hair aren't culture. Their plenty of people with naturally straight or blonde hair, that's just a genetics things. It's fine to share culture, its simply crediting that Latinas want. A lot of their culture was wiped away in the past so I'd imagine they like to keep some of it
Ximena Arredondo You can go out acting/dressing like a stereotype whether it's racist or not, freedom of speech and expression allows someone to be racist
Ximena Arredondo No, you are allowed to do all of that. It's white people that can't do it because of Status Quo some centuries ago.
I think it's hypocritical that they only got angry about the Asian character and not about a white character. If you're going to be racist and focus on race at least be consistent.
We discussed the race issue in our Drama class the other day. As I live in South Africa, the issues regarding race is on a whole other level. But we specifically discussed the issue about casting an actor or actress in a role where the character is not described in the script or story as being the same race.
We came to the conclusion that if it makes a significant change to the story then it matters. But, if the race of the character has no influence then it shouldn't matter. If we take a local story like "Fiela se kind" as an example, it is about a coloured woman taking care of a white boy during the years of apartheid. If we take all those factors into consideration, then the actors and the story line has to match the context of the story. But, we also said that making a film or a play or whatever, you are making a form of art. The actors are artists. And the job of the actor is to bring justice to the script and his or her character. We (Actors) should make you believe that we are our characters, whatever our characters look like or are like. The public don't have much of a choice when it comes to casting. That is what the director wants. If his casting doesn't work because the character doesn't ft the part according to whatever issue, then that is their fault. The world of film and drama is grey, not black and white. We mix and match to make art. All these issues about whitewashing is understandable. But I feel they are trying to control an industry that isnt made to be controlled. If the public wants films and plays to be so accurate that the actors should fit the parts of their characters, then that is called type casting. We dont like it because it opens no space for creativity or growth as an actor. Jared Leto casted as a transvestite and people got angry because he wasnt one? Hes an actor he should make you believe he is one. I am Sam is another example. I dont think a man, with the capabilities of Sam, would have been an easy role to cast if it was type casted. Its a very difficult topic to discuss. But that is my two-cent comment.
Please do not think of this as an acceptance of vertical video and start making vertical videos. You should still always hold your phone sideways when recording video. Vertical video is still cancer, youtube is just trying to make it less cancer.
It's called equality for a reason. If people are getting up in arms about Ed they should be equally up in arms about the redhead chick being played by a black girl. The second you decide one isn't offensive and the other one is you enter into hypocrisy. Personally I don't care one way or the other. It's up to the director and writer's interpretation of the source material.
Amen
Took the words right out of my mouth thanks for saying what I've had on my mind since watching this.
the difference is that white people have enough roles and options available while minorities rarely get leading roles.
PhatTony92 aye I'm black and LMAO how do you make Mary Jane black smh
I think what's most interesting about the whole identity politics debacle is that there are those who look at this issue of diversity in media in a vacuum and those who do not. Sure, you can say that if one case is offensive then ALL cases have to be offensive but I think you miss a critical point of the argument for inclusion. Media has historically depicted Asian people in a very specific, and sometimes negative light. I don't find a issue with someone recognizing that and taking themselves out of the situation. No harm and no foul on both sides.
I do believe, that a film maker should be able to change a charecter's ethnicity, to better suit the story he/she wants to tell, or if he/she has a certain actor/actress in mind. But that should go both ways. As a nordic person, I was not offended when Idriss Elba was cast as Heimdall in Thor, and I wasn't offended by Ed Skrein, being cast as Ben Daimio. What offends me is the hypocrisy.
It didn't offend many because it didn't matter. It doesn't. Only ones to feel "offended" that a person got the role are pretty much the ones with the racist thought on them.
When it comes to a character who's Ideology, Traits, Backgrounds, and Ethnicity, do represent and are essential to what composes the character, THEN it is important that the character gets played by someone that looks faithful to the source material. Like the comment above. "An actor's ethnicity only matters when it's relevant to their character."
Ed Skrein gets SO much respect from me for this! He seemingly doesn't need it, but I've never heard of someone stepping down from a role over a white-washing controversy. Very noble!
In regards to the Hellboy casting. If you set the president that a person can not take a role that was originally writer in other formats as another race then it must be universal. Because what the message here seems to be is "Only white people can't be considered as replacements for other races." Deadpools Domino is now a black woman. Spidermans MJ is a black woman. The aforementioned irish character is a black woman. When ever a person steps up and complains that these characters don't fit there description or appearance from other mediums those people get accused of racism.
The whole thing is a double standard. It should matter for all or is it should not matter for all. Anything else is simply saying "only white can't" which is racist.
Aggressively Mediocre Yes, I can definitely agree with their goals, but they can't be this stupid. They just add more oil to the fire to the situation by doing this.
Creating new PoC characters and promoting the existing ones would not be controversial at all. I really don't understand them, when the answer is so easy 😞
Zsolt, I think (optimistically) that most are just trying to do the right thing. Trouble is they don't know what the right thing really is. Mainly because the entire idea of whitewashing is a made up thing but because they've only heard about it and never really paid enough attention to it. They hear about it and think "Oh that's something we better avoid (recasting nonwhite with white) but then think (and rightly) nothing about recasting white to nonwhite. Because white people don't care about that kind of thing. We only get upset because this is demonstrably a double standard.
I only care about gender or race if it fits the history or timeline that the film is set. Like dr. Strange. I wasn't so bothered by the fact that she was a woman but that a Tibetan monk was being played by a European. Also Gods of Egypt .... why they all white? But it also irks me when I see character like Lancelot being portrayed by an African American in OUAT.
So if the source material suggests the bad guy grew up in Asia and that has some part to his back story of why he's evil.... then yes, he should be Asian. If the Irish girl being Irish is critical to the characters story then she should be Irish. I am all for inclusion, in fact I cheer for it, but only if it makes sense for the story or character.
jumpergirls agreed!
jumpergirls Egyptians are generally white tho lol.
Egyptians were only "white" after the Roman occupation giggles giggles, before they were mostly brown skinned and yes crazy right? Black
Paulo Normil But they weren't sub-Saharan black, only the Nubians.
Zeeno SwagMaster not true , just a simple google search would prove your statement wrong

If a character's backstory or actions are determined by their ethnicity or race or gender etc., then yes, they should most certainly be cast as such. If the character isn't defined by those characteristics, then the roll should be cast to the best actor for the job, regardless of race, gender, etc. although adaptations should always strive to stay as accurate as possible to source material.
Yeah, if you made Spidey black, it's not big of a deal, but if you make Black Panther and Luke Cage white, then there's an issue.
Joel Miller Spidey was black at some point, remember Miles Morales??
Jonny White I think this is changing more and more since there is less and less a strong divide between people of different ethnic background in the west. nowadays I can tell as a Black person that I can understand many stuff that my white friends went through (as long as they aren't specifically linked to their skin color) because we had the same economical and cultural background. someone's history and background can have nothing to do with their race if they aren't surrounded by retarded people who make everything a race issue 24/7.
Phil, thnks a lot for the advice on my new video! Real nice of you man
What was the advice?
@ckd98 it was about my content and the thumbnails and whatnot, just awsome general youtube advice for my new video
I thought Kendall & Kylie stole that plaid shirt look from Scarce.
The closer a movie stays to the source material the better in my opinion.
But what if the source material is shit...?😯
john johnson Are you saying that Hellboy's source is shit?
Not that I'm upset, I'm just curious.
Why would they make a movie about it then?
No, there is no difference between ed and the black lady. I don't know hell boy lore too much, but my opinion is always, if a characters ethnicity/culture is a major aspect of their character, directors should choose actors that properly emulate that. If it isn't, who the hell cares!
I can agree wit that.
Never knew Plaid was Latino. Learn something new every day. Don't know how all the Scottish Lumberjacks will take this. We better start breaking out the Pepsi's.
I bought that same shirt at kmart for $6.99
It was about the style it was worn in for the advertisement. Plaid is a big thing in Punk fashion as well, but they way the wore it was Cholo style. The issue being a lot of people who wear that style are looked down on, but when the Kendalls do it suddenly is not just acceptable but cool.
Also surprised that no Grunge songs have Spanish lyrics
Beathan Steele I know, plaid flannel shirts and latinos aren't exactly my first association either. In fact all I think of is Al Borland in Home Improvement! This whole cultural appropriation argument is bull anyway, who gets to decide if only certain races or cultures can wear certain things, otherwise can I claim jeans and a t-shirt combo for white people before anyone else does, otherwise I'll have nothing left to wear.
Can we all just agree that $100+ is ridiculous for flannel shirts though?
After some more research it seems Cholo culture only started wearing flannel in the late 90's, how can they even claim that as cultural appropriation like it's some historic tradition that's being abused.
I don't care who plays what role but if one actor gets pressured to drop out of a role for not being of the right decent it should go both ways.
As a person of colour, I actually don't like when they change an established white character's race just because. Why not create new, ethnically diverse characters or use more of the already established, ethnically diverse characters from the source material? Sure, Miles Morales (the new half-black, half-hispanic Spider-Man) is a new character, but who do you think of when someone says "Spider-Man"? Recently all we get is second-hand heroes and icons. It's diversity for the sake of diversity.
In ultimate spiderman vs the sinister 6 they called him Kid Arachnid I think. I thought that was nice it made it far less confusing.
I personally feel that an Irish actress should've been cast for the role of the Irish woman in the Hellboy reboot, and an Asian actor cast for the role of the Asian man in the reboot. Keep the reboot true to its roots
I have to say I don't really get why people are so passionate one way or the other about this actors-being-cast-for-characters-of-differing-races thing. Maybe this should be a thing, maybe not, but ultimately I think the person who plays the character the best theatrically should take the roll, independent of the color of their skin.
wait are you saying that we should judge people on the content of their character and not on the color of their skin? That makes no sense, and no major historic figure as ever asked for this.
Gravuun exactly. It only makes a better film/tv show if you have the best actors instead of the most accurate.
Gravuun Oh really? Who's up to portray whole history of American black slavery but with a twist. There will be only white people that casting will choose because of their skill, not a race.
I'd be happy to see that happening just so you'd shut you mouth for speaking such things.
Now, in any other profession, it is okay to judge by ability, not race. But you can't give an apple a role to play in a movie about oranges.
My opinion on this is mixed, if this is based on a source material (such as comic books, manga, books, etc.) then I think there's a responsibility to cast people who conform to that character because the idea is to faithfully recreate something that many people find important. Disregarding the source material in this way is disrespectful to the source material and the fans who enjoy it, the point should be to minimize discrepancies in characters. If however the source material is unclear as to the race/sex of a character (it is a superhero comic after all, it's possible) then yeah directors can take liberties in casting, specially for actors meant to voice digitally added characters.
door Locke I disagree. A movie based on previous work is not MEANT to "faithfully" recreate something that many people already know. You can do it if you want but it's not an obligation. Just because the original story is from a book or a comic book doesn't mean that it's perfect. An adaptation can be like a fan fiction, source material worshippers often use that word as an insult but there is nothing inherently wrong about writing a fan fiction like there is nothing inherently right about writing an original story. I myself have read many Harry Potter fan fictions and, imo, the writers emulated JKR's original work and their stories were way better than the cursed child.
That's why I hate source material worshipers, they are the worst kind of movie goers. I am kind of a nerd too, but I don't want to walk into a theatre to see a story that I have already read. I guess you are one of these people, and I think, you, wanna feel safe walking into a theatre, that's basically what your entire comment was saying, "I want to feel safe, see nothing knew, because I already liked it the way it was". Sometimes SMW are be fooled into thinking a movie is good just because they are many Easter eggs, even if the plot makes no sense ( *cough* *cough* BvS *cough* *cough*)
As long as the changes make sense they are worth listen to.
For example, if you want to adapt Captain America, Steve Rogers has to be an underdog that became a superhero because being an underdog is a major explanation for his selflessness and desire to help the weak which are the reason why he was chosen to be Captain America. If you recreate the story and make Steve Rogers a bully than he wouldn't have been chosen to be Cap and you would have to change the story so much to make it logical that there is no point in calling him Steve rogers in the first place. You might as well just say that it's a new guy that became Cap after him.
If you are just going to change let's say the cast's gender for no reason -or only for political reasons-, and retell the same story but in a lazier way (*cough* cough* Ghost busters 2016), it's not gonna work neither because everyone would ask "why was this movie made?"
As long as the changes don't impact the story that explain the character's personality to the point that he is not even recognizable (e.g The joker in Suicide Squad who is.... were is he even from? Is not like in the Dark Knight so is he a knew guy pretending to be the joker or...?), I don't see what is wrong. If their race is not extremely relevant to the story, I don't see what is wrong either. The only complains would basically be "we don't like the fact that he is different because we don't like it", and it would come for the SMW.
Again, a director doesn't have to follow the SM like it's a HOLY scripture or some shit.
In regards to the white washing bullshit on anime, yes the DeathNote one has some merit but did people complain about blackwashing when they made L black? And on Ghost in the Shell Major is a Robot, the creator of Ghost in the Shell said HIMSELF that he Liked the casting of Scarlett.
Concerning L being black. Yes, people have complained.
Also, literally I have no idea why people get upset about Death Note, they stated this is a new story, borrowing them,es and no more, so meh, it's a whole new World.
because they used the excuse of "its a new story" they can techniqually change stuff. but Light's character has some base on his heritage.
also L's true heritage is unknown. we don't know what country he comes from or his heritage. so casting him as a black person doesn't necessarily matter. while its untrue to the story it doesnt change anything. unlike light's new coat of paint.
xBluegamerx Actually, yes, a whole binch of people complained. In fact, a quirk of L was how pale he was from never going outside, and well, that's not exactly an option now.
I'm complaining now. It sucked. On its own it would've been a fine movie, but to take an adaptation of first a manga and then second an anime where each character had its specific role, setting, appearances, etc. and then to completely change it for the ease of a PC society is bullshit. I'm incredibly disappointed, because the creators and directors of the movie had a platform to give light and applause to the anime world and their creators and they basically shut it off. Now, anyone who watches death note the movie will see it as another teen rom com and not the badass art it really is.
xBluegamerx black =\= Asian? Also I'm actually pretty sure snowflakes like you were complaining that L is black
In the Ghost in the Shell anime and manga only like one character calls her by her full name she's almost always addressed as just major
As someone who loves reading and want to be a writer in a future, sometimes race, gender and religion are important factors to understand why a character has his personality, or why does he behaves this or that way.
Race, gender, religion... sometimes they set the character in an specific geographical place, sociocultural movement, and period of time, and that makes people develop in different ways. For example, a jewish guy that lived during the WWII has a different mindset that a jewish guy born in the XXI century. Right?
This is something very clear in, for example, the manga of Death Note. To perfectly understand the main character, you have to learn all about his backgrounds (the japanese society and it's high standards, the japanese educational system, the japanese system of justice, ...). By changing something as simple as his birthplace, you are erasing everything that lead to the character to be how he is, and you are making a completely different character
(This is why the new film flopped among anime fans, but that's another issue...)
I'm not sure, but... as far as I know, most writers give traits to their characters to make them interesting and unique, not to have the biggest colorful palette of diversity as SJWs love... That's what I hate the most about racewashing and SJW in general: they reduce entire races, cultures and centuries of history to a color palette
And how does a culture own plaid? Is it a really specific plaid or something?
On the whole Hellboy topic.. I don't really care about the race/ethnicity of a character, but I do prefer maximum accuracy in casting to characters, and that goes even for the ethnicity being correct. For instance, in Deadpool 2, they cast Josh Brolin as Cable.. while the absolute perfect casting would be Kevin Nash (looks exactly like Cable, exact same build and height, even similar life-story, making him an optimal fit, and he can act). But that being said, it does seem like a trend progressively expanding that it's "ok to cast white characters as non-white, but not the other way around" at the same time as anti-white racism is on an all-time rising high.
For what it's worth, it's entertainment and doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but hypocrisy is still dangerously present on race/ethnicity "PC" topics, and swept under the rug if it happens towards anyone that happens to be white.
Well said, I'm fine with people not wanting white washing in Hollywood but it should be both ways
Mainfold Well said
I kind of agree. While I thought the casting of Deathnote was awful in general, I wasn't bothered by the fact that MJ was black in the new Spiderman or that Wonder Woman was played by a Jewish woman.
If the character your casting is supposed to be a certain ethnicity in order to fit the character's name or culture in the upcoming material, then they need to match. If you have a white girl named Chong, I don't believe you. But if your bad guy is named General Ed, idc if he was originally black, white, Asian, or Latino: General Ed can refer to anybody. You could have a poodle play General Ed & I'd be chill with it as long as he was a good actor.
Caitlin is a Kitty Cat, good points!
Though there is the whole topic of character-recognition. If you're in the theater and a your first reaction for a character you're familiar with when seeing them on screen is "who's that?", it's just bad casting, which will more often than not ruin immersion. Deathnote casting was just a joke, generally it was a joke as a whole too
Yaz Zetera, in the big picture no, racism is racism regardless.. but in the case when it's specific targeted at "white" people, there is "such a thing", in the same manner where someone might not treat someone of spanish descent in a racist manner but specifically do it only against someone who has a variation of a african-descendent ethnicity (or call it "black" or whatever). In the same manner there is "anti-black" racism, there is anti- every other ethnic variation being specifically targeted. Where someone is racist, but only display the behavior towards one ethnic group. But yes, racism is racism, regardless of other factors, regardless of race, it's not like the perpetuated "you can't be racist against white people" idiocy.
On the style story, wouldn't it be considered more racist for a group of people to not let "outsiders" wear their clothing style rather than just welcoming other people groups to wear the same if they wanted to? Idk just wondering.
Not many people cared about Johnny Storm being black. Not many people cared about Deadshot being black. They didn't even care about Heimdallr the "whitest of gods" being black in two movies. We're living in times where is more important to fill a quota in diversity rather than meritocracy.
That's not true. Johnny Storm in particular was a huge controversy. I think even Michelle Rodriguez posted about it, claiming blacks were stealing superhero roles. Heimdallr didn't have much of a controversy because he was barely in the movie and not in any trailers.
Those movies had a lot more wrong with them than race diversity, I think people where too pissed about wasting money than seeing a character get the Revitiligo,
The issue with Johnny Storm being black was that he's Sue Storms brother so by changing the race of one of them and not both makes integral changes to their characters and dynamic. It was a big deal because it changes the dynamic of the group as a whole because Sue and Johnny are brother/sister and that informs their relationship with each other. If it had been Ben or Richard that was black it would have been much less of an issue (although some people will always complain) but their race is irrelevant to their relationships with the other members of the Fantastic 4.
It was far from the biggest problem with the movie but it was a symptom of the creators not caring about the source material and by extension not respecting the fans of the franchise.
Luis De La Rosa yeah because the fantastic 4 movie suxked
Luis De La Rosa If the race/culture affects a character's integral being, then they should maintain the original race. But if it has no effect, then race shouldn't matter. For example, The Black Panther shouldn't be white. His race is an integral part of his character. But Cyborg could be white because his race has nothing to do with his character.
I'm pretty sure that like 90% of the people who are mad at the "white washing" didn't even read the original comics. As a Mexican American of course I would like to see roles played by people of color, but I also want to see the best content possible. If it means casting an actor that is different race from the source material, then go for it!
alexisdlg96 was it good tho🙂🤔
Actors, oddly enough, are cast based on their abilities and how well they managed to portray the character during their casting.
Agreed 10000%
And oh shit. I believe you can find that kind of person in every single race so why not piece that particular race that is good and smart and can act? God. Your just saying basic knowledge when that basic knowledge can apply to every race which makes that knowledge seem like it is applauding whitewashing.
James Anderson You're right they sometimes are, however there is a plethora of colored actors and actresses who can portray the character well/with abilities equivalent to those of their white counterparts'.
Why are they being overlooked?
I agree, Mr.Anderson. People should be judged based on merit over every other consideration. Things should be earned.
lmfao no they fucking arent they are hired based on a huge variety of factors least of which is their actual skill
I looooove when Phil says "as far as my opinion goes... I just don't care" cause true
