Hope you enjoy the video everybody! Tell me... What are some of YOUR favorite syncopated grooves? If you'd like to take these concepts further, you can book a one-on-one online lesson with me here: JeffRandallDrumming.com
If you watch a live hang you from the heavens, type in dead weather drum discussion, it's Jack white talking for most of it and it's in black and white, then they play hang you from the heavens with an alternate intro beat, and it's great to say the least, great vid as ever, can't wait to smash em out x
Hello, Jeff My Lord Jeff you are Tremendous I truly appreciate you sharing your grooves with us. Jeff, I'm 70 years old, Old School I graduated from Berklee School of music in 83. l believe in sharing some of my greatest influences and private instructors with you and their recordings as Jeff Porcaro His Father whom I studied with in Hartford Joe Skinny Porcaro.. Here's some music of the late 60's early 70, A Band called COLD BLOOD Drummer SANDY McKEE 9real name was Cecil Stolie) the whole band Cold Blood Heres Songs you really need to check out SHOP TALK and VALDEZ in the Country You got me Hummin, After Sandy, they had Gaylord Birch a Monster drummer himself Next for grooves is MICKEY ROKER Whom I had Private study with for 2 years a great Jazz Cat The Album OLINGA with Milt Jackson check out The Steel Bender and the Metal Melter I'M NOT SO SURE a Swinging Killer song What great of the album They record two takes on each sound the first with a very fast up-tempo the 2nd a slower tempo. Listen to Mickey Roker fast syncopation even at low volume I've never heard anything with such Precision Dynamics Articulation . I've turned on other drummers to this recording every one was taken aback and breathless in his execution
Jeff I have learned more drum information from you in just a few videos than I have learned in the past 5 years. Thank you so very much for being one if not the best drum teacher online at this time.
Great content Jeff. The structure of the video is straightforward and concise which I think makes you stand out. Seeing the sheet music while you play makes it a lot easier to master the drumbeats. Keep at it!
That intro... HOT DAMN!!😳 Mr. Randall, that was absolutely smashing my good sir!! Thank you for another excellent video. I admire you for your sweet groove that you always have while pulling out some of the most bad ass chops I have ever seen. I love how you know when to just chill out and groove, and turn around and just splinter the kit while never over playing. You have some of the most tasty fills and always perfectly placed. Thank you for the inspiration!
I would like to see a video on your hand technique. I'm very surprised that you hit with all that power and seem to have tight grip, but still look pretty relaxed. Thank you again Jeff!
what a fucking cool drummer, i know this is about syncopation and all that, but i just love this guy's feel - got that factor X going dude (dig the drum sound too. "Big bad bonham')
Very talented, sir! I appreciate the precision and intensity with which you play these covers and demonstrations. Very informative and your choice in songs is fantastic!
Thanks Nick! Love me some Galactic. I watched that Stanton Moore DVD on repeat back in the day. I'm thinking I'll do another syncopation video for funk sometime in the future and that would be a great groove to use.
The way you played these grooves really make the drum sing. I know your kit sounds so good, but to be able to achieve that sound you are a wonderful player Jeff. Keeps up with the content!
Wow! What a fantastic drummer! I'm old so my references are old as well. Can you offer examples of classic rock syncopation in addition to Led Zep? I was thinking maybe "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer for one. "Walking on the Moon" by the Police. "China Cat Sunflower" (Grateful Dead.) Could think of more but my concept of syncopation may be wrong, I don't know.....
Man! It's the first video I watch on your channel and I don't understand how I was losing all your previous content. Keep this great work, you have a new follower, greetings from Argentina!
Holy smokes wrench and numbers!?!?!? I watched Fargo as well and I absolutely loved that beat the first time I heard it and ever since! I was sad that I never new the name of it, you made my week. That groove makes me just wanna screech to a stop on somebody’s lawn, kick the car door open and take a baseball bat to the mailbox
Bahaha. I have indeed! I’m finding that it helps my drumming. I used to deal with wrist pain, ext. before I started exercising. And thanks! Got some new gear recently and am dialing it all in. It’s making the drums sound a lot better!
hey cool, i am from austria, but i've never heard of this company before ^^ i'm definitely checking them out! nice video, jeff! as always - very inspiring :-D
Extraordinary! Thank you Jeff for giving such stuff free of cost ...!! Thanks to Lewitt for such superb quality mics for drummers... I will surely buy this and recommend it...
Getting jacked my friend. Been watching you for a long while now. You've totally helped me out as i am the typical self taught drummer. I appreciate the grind man! Also, love digital bath, so pumped you put this in here. Hope all is well, Brett from Chicago!
Trying Brett! Haha. Thanks for continuing to watch my stuff over the years man. Means a lot. This music thing is definitely a grind but I’m addicted to it at this point. I love that Digital Bath groove as well! Took me a minute to figure out how he plays it.
Really diggin the videos, Jeff. I appreciate the subtle tuning changes in the snare to get the vibe of the tune, particularly the Steve Jordan one. Those 16" or 17" hats?!
Awesome video Jeff. I've been watching your videos ever since I saw one of your early videos on using the six stroke roll around the kit with adding extra accents. I use this all the time. It's great to see how your videos have progressed. Keep up the great work!
Fan-effing-tastic! What kit are you playing? Loved the grooves! The Zeppelin and Steve Jordan grooves immediately came to mind when you were doing your intro. Them Crooked Vultures are one of my favorite bands as well!!
I've been enjoying your playing and videos. I have a question not related to this particular video. I would appreciate any feedback from fellow drummers as well. When my band is rehearsing I provide solid time and feel loose while playing, but.....once we are playing a live gig I totally rush the tempo. How can I work on this? The other problem I seem to have when playing gigs is that once I get to a drum fill I tighten up just before the fill or rush and it doesn't get played as cleanly as I know it should. Any suggestions?
Hey Andrew, it’s hard to say without seeing you play but it probably boils down to something you’ll get better at through experience. Have you considered playing to a metronome live until you get comfortable with the tempos?
I'm curious what the correct terms would be to describe what the drummer does in "Your Love" by the Outfield. I'm not sure if it would be syncopation or something else.
I always thought of billy Joel's "Big Shot" as one of the most awkward beat type songs, but only saw one review mentioning syncopation in describing it. Or is it asynchronous?
Hey Adam, I’ve got another recording and mixing video coming in the next few weeks where I’m gonna talk about my current sound! Keep a look out my dude.
This is AWESOME!! Bro is your kit mic'd? Or just overheads? I don't see any on the kit and yet it sounds PHENOMENAL! I just put out a little drum solo on our fishing channel if you get a chance please check it out it would be an honor 👊
Yeah man, I’ve only seen a couple people do it before myself. Not sure I’ll keep it this way but I like how it gives me a bit of the top attack and the bottom snare sound all in one mic!

Message In A Bottle by Police
Some grooves from RATM.. I don t know which one but I think many of them are quite syncopated.. right ?
A+ on content, A+ on presentation, A+ on clarity, and extra credit for enthusiasm.
Insane intro
What’s the song in the intro?
@@Idontwantanotherhandle Sorry I do not know
Your drums sound like heaven!

This gets me so damn excited! I really don't know why more people don't talk about syncopation.
I'm not a drummer but I enjoy hearing you play!

Much appreciated Albin! Will do.
My favorite groove from this video has got to be "Whole lotta love" Led Zeppelin! Freaking love that groove!!

Syncopation is SO fun!

Amazing work Jeff! This inspires me to continue in the exploration of good flowing grooves with a unique character
Each of the examples sound and feel great Jeff! Love hearing that Dead Weather groove 🥁
Thanks Paul! LOVE that Dead Weather song as well.
Please please please, make more video about rock drumming. yes, rock drumming. You're aweseome.
The AvA "Disease" intro from Ilan Rubin is one of my favorite grooves ever
I love your attitude behind the kit bro, just watching you gives me confidence. It almost teaches me more than the video itself :)
Thanks bud, means a lot.
what a fucking cool drummer, i know this is about syncopation and all that, but i just love this guy's feel - got that factor X going dude (dig the drum sound too. "Big bad bonham')
Your Sakae drums sound fantastic!!! Thanks for making these grooves understandable for us mere mortals!
Awesome Drum sound...and thanks for introducing me to these great grooves...I didn't know some of them existed😄
Man, great video!!!! I really enjoyed this, thank you 🙂
Very talented, sir! I appreciate the precision and intensity with which you play these covers and demonstrations. Very informative and your choice in songs is fantastic!
Also, I'm a huge fan of the song "Crazyhorse Mongoose" by Galactic. Has a nice syncopated backbeat, similar to the ones you discussed in the video.
Thanks Nick! Love me some Galactic. I watched that Stanton Moore DVD on repeat back in the day. I'm thinking I'll do another syncopation video for funk sometime in the future and that would be a great groove to use.
Jeff Randall Awesome. Thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work man!
I play bass but sometimes look up drum vids like this... Love your snare sound here and great playing.
Right on, thanks!
Love that snare tone!
The way you played these grooves really make the drum sing. I know your kit sounds so good, but to be able to achieve that sound you are a wonderful player Jeff. Keeps up with the content!

Jeff...... really really , you and Lewitt rocking with tones of exceptions !!!!
That last Deftones one was the one which came to my mind after reading the title. I was so relieved that you had it as a bonus 😅 great video!

I'm surprised no Blue and yellow by The Used. But never the less, sick video!🔥

Ilan Rubin would be proud of you 👌🏻
Dave Grohl too, since he wrote the drum part ;)
Nice ...been looking for a video like this for a while
Right on James
That 17" hat stack is wicked
Oh man I'm so glad the Fargo one made top of the list! I don't know if you remember but I recommended you check it out on youtube 3 or 4 years ago :)
Dude that was you?! Right on. LOVE that groove.
I really thought you were going to bring up the drum intro to “Take the Money and Run” for a second. Pleasant surprise though!
Jeff! The groove by the group 30 Seconds to Mars stole this groove directly from a Deftones song titled "Rx Queen".
Woah! It’s pretty much the same groove! Great call man.
Also sounds a lot like To Whom it may concern by UnderOath
White Pony fl
Nice Groovin man
Thanks bud
You play very clean! ^.^
Awesome work here, Jeff. 👊🏻.
Much appreciated Jim!
great that you have the dead weather in it! Jack White is a underrated drummer i think.
Nice groove!
I'm not a drummer but I can rally appreciate what you are doing here. Nice work. Maybe some Bernard Purdy?
Thanks Brian! Love that suggestion.
Thanks man!
Do a snare tuning video! Yours is sick!
Nice Jeff!!😎
Thanks Jandro!
Take a listen to Remember by Disturbed. It has great syncopation and it is in a different time sig. Not sure what but it definitely is a great song.
Great Video!
Thank you!
Just wow❤️
Fan-effing-tastic! What kit are you playing? Loved the grooves! The Zeppelin and Steve Jordan grooves immediately came to mind when you were doing your intro. Them Crooked Vultures are one of my favorite bands as well!!

My Way - John Otto
Soul To Squeeze - Chad Smith
That 30 Seconds to Mars beat is straight from Deftones Rx Queen! White Pony album came 5 years earlier.
Yeah! A couple other guys brought that to my attention as well. Too funny how I had them back to back on the list, all by chance! Haha.
@@JeffRandallDrumming I paused the video to comment and started laughing when Digital Bath came next!
How the hell you always get this open sort of vintage snare drum sound? It's driving me crazy haha

What about "Industrial disease" by Dire Straits?
Waiting on the world to change ;)
big revelation: all syncopated songs are about a broken heart
out of the world..💞💞💕💞💞👌😘
Thank you!
What’s size your drum stick ? 😁😁
I’ve never seen a snare mic’d from the body of the shell before
Any benefits you like ?
Yeah man, I’ve only seen a couple people do it before myself. Not sure I’ll keep it this way but I like how it gives me a bit of the top attack and the bottom snare sound all in one mic!
So would you say syncopation and "displacement" are identical concepts?
What does “an outlier groove” mean exactly?
Nun beat whole Lotta love
Gotta agree with you there!
