The monarchy still stands strong in Sweden (and scandinavia). Even though we are democratic countries these days, the solid foundation for this evolved out of the monarchies. As a swedish soldier I swear loyalty to both the monarchy and the democractic system This can be seen as contradictory I suppose, but we have made it work. For me the king is the true head of state. The monarchy is what we are built on.. Political parties may come and go, the crown will persist.

I don't like any of the politicians in Sweden nor the monarchy. They simply has destroyed the country for over 30 years.
From a country with world highest BMP. Massive industry, capable army, people that was friendly and cared for each other. Where there was job for everyone and poverty was far less than now. Sadly a lot of people don't see any point in defending or stand up for Sweden anymore and I can understand that.
The country is just divided in so many ways now everyone just cares about themselves.
Sad but true but I think it is a fenomen that is common in lots of countries.

This song "Livgardet" was originally requested by the The Swedish Armed Forces for the 500 year celebration . But they had a change of mind because of the risk for political missunderstandings and the request was all in a sudden withdrawn . But Sabaton decided to release it anyway of their own... Thanks for good reactions to Sabaton songs from someone who had his military training at " Kungliga Svea Livgarde (The Royal Swedish Lifeguards)

The melody in the beginning is from the
swedish hymn 297 - "Härlig är jorden". Or "Lovely is the earth/Fairest lord Jesus" in english. I might have sung it a long time ago when I was part of a choir. 👍

Yes, it was supposed to be an ode or an anthem to Livgardet for their 500th anniversary.
There were plans to do some sort of cooperation with Livgardet, but politics spoiled those plans.
They have actually played the Swedish version live, but with no audience, at the Dalecarlia Music Awards 2021.
The Swedish Red Cross (or the Swedish Church) had an television ad on recently asking for donations...
They used hymn 297 in that ad, children singing and all, but all I could hear was the lyrics to Livgardet and Royal guard.

It is not political correkt in Sweden to be proud over our history. If you are proud and show this, than most people will think you are racist in same second. In some way the politician think that you automatic is bad and racist if you show proud over the history this make some of Sabaton song sensitive to politician. Even if they make the song in a not always glorious way and in an more kind of mourning and sad way how we descended could relate to the forefathers.
I grow up with the feeling of proud but with the knowledge that this not meant to be shown to other beacuse they than think you think less of the other people. But really you can be proud and like and respect the other same time. But in Sweden the respect for the other is seen more good and more right and that this preclude the right to be proud. People that show proud over their countries what ever you come from will by the overwhelming part of swedish people be consider as stupid, racist, nationalist, subjective, unrespectful and really bad. This why many educated swedish dont like American movies beacuse they are often glorifying. Oh this is an big object to talk about!
Need work. Listen to you soon again!

The royal life guard today is a modern military regiment, mainly charged with the defence of Stockholm. They also have units who's main task is palace guard/honor guard duties.
This song was made for the celebration of Livgardets 500 year anniversary. Making it one of the oldest active military regiments in the world (maybe THE oldest that is not just ceremonial?) Sabaton was going to be a part of this celebration, but politics got in the way, and they were not allowed to participate. But they finished the song anyway.

"The 16 strong" are the original men from the region of Dalarna that were assigned to Gustav Vasa when he was seeking support to kick Danish king Christian II out of Stockholm, following the bloodbath of Stockholm, Wich rocketed Gustav to the front of the line of succession. This is serious "Game of thrones" stuff, by the way.

The Swedish video is post the battle you see in the English version.
I don't think they have played this song live. It was released during covid.
It is as Martin Karlsson wrote about the so called "Kalabaliken i Bender".
Kalabalik is a Turkish word for a crowd/gathering of people.
The word was after the mentioned skirmish adopted into the Swedish language.
Instead of just a crowd/gathering it is in Swedish usually used to refer to chaos/tumult related to crowds because that is how it went in Bender.
Karl XII just didn't want to leave so the Ottomans had to force him. ;)

The best comparison to anything in the states would be the Secret Service, which actually isn't too far fetched when it comes to the responsibilities of caring for the protection of the country's leaders not only from physical harm but also from conspiracies, coups etc. Livgardet of course is a lot more militaristic and have actual military regiments, so there are still a lot of differences.

Livgardet was grounded from people from Dalarna who supported the nobelman Gustav Wasa in his ambition to get the Danish (who did get rid of the old swedish monarchy and kill alot of the nobelmen in the tragedy we remembering as Stockholms blodbad = the blodbath of Stockholm) out and make Sweden swedish again. With the men from Dalarna and paid german Knights Gustav Wasa get the Danish Kristian Tyrann = Kristian the tyrant ( in Denmark remembered as Kristian den gode= Kristian the good) and made himself King of Sweden. I have the great honor to work with one of the descendant of one of the dalkar/dalmas (men of Dalarna) that skiing to help Gustav Wasa in the start of the upris.
Livgardet was from beginning both bodyguards and part of the army.
In the song they even use the "valspråk" of the now sitting King. För Sverige i tiden = for Sweden in this time. I dont know how translate what Valspråk is in English. But it is words the King chose to work under and is chosen when he becomes King. Maybe same a motto... Same as some words used in the song Lejonet från Norden about Gustav II Adolf and Gott mit uns. Sabaton use GIIA valspråk in song.
Ära vare den högste, de sinas tillflykt (latin: Gloria altissimo suorum refugio)
Med Gud och de segerrika vapnen (latin: Deo et victricibus armis)
Gud (är) med oss (tyska: Gott mit uns)

Here you can see our lovely Royal Guard today lol. They are very much still there and active, although the royal guard itself might be more ceremonial in some sense. They are still a military unit and military personnel, considered an honor to be a part of of course. And I don't believe you are a royal guard forever, it will shift out.
But consider this... During this time, during the Swedish Empire time, our country was extremely religious. And the king was seeing himself as the voice of God. So to serve as the royal guard udenr the king 500 years ago would be the utmost honor.
Today, Swedish army is more about helping those in need, whoever they are or wherever they are. Not so much "for our country" as it is for humans as a whole all over the world. That's my view of it at least.

    • @rayceofhistory

    • @FemaleSniper86

@@rayceofhistory Fairly certain that it is just like joining any other unit in the military. You apply and hope you get in. But the royal guard isn't just about guarding the king and castel, or even the city of Stockholm and so on. It goes beyond that. They train service dogs, for example, they have cavalry, the music-core, counter terrorism, fighting in forest and city environment just like other military units, they both are and educate military police, and educate swedish and foreign people in "peace operations" during wartime.
These truly are an important unit for our military, tasked with a lot. And though our royal family has no real political power today, they are still ceremonial and important, and the royal guard are guarding them and the castle still.
      P.S.
Our military service is different from the US. We have "värnplikt" or conscription where you will as an 18 year old most commonly serve under a unit, learn the basics e.t.c. for instance medic or engineer e.t.c. And from there you may not want to continue as a real soldier and just go on normal life. Or you apply to become a soldier. And it goes from there.

@@rayceofhistory As far as I know, only the Royal Family.
But I mean, they are part of our Military army, so their service goes under the Military. And the Military isn't under the King anymore, but also the politics can't rule them.
