  • Welcome to Crimson Guitars ruclips.net/user/CrimsonC... and welcome to a unique new Guitar Building Video from Crimson Guitars and the 2020 Build Challenge; in honour of this new decade - and in thanks for exceeding 200,000 subscribers here on RUclips!
    To make this a serious challenge Ben asked Instagram what type of instrument he should attempt to build in just 20 hours and 20 minutes; from the body shape to the pick-up configuration, neck construction, and even the number of strings. Our wonderful Instagram followers did not disappoint - because they set one heck of a challenge!
    Ben will be building a totally unique multi-scale fanned fret guitar with a through-neck design a hollow body and custom inlay!
    At the end of January 2020, this instrument was raffled off to one of our fabulous customers.
    In this episode, Ben works out the fretboard radius, marks, and cuts the fret slots, works on the inlay and the fretboard binding.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction
    0:24 16:17:18 Fretboard cured, off with the clamps, on to the router
    2:25 Next, radius the fretboard, and measure and mark frets
    11:30 Cutting the frets, placing the inlay
    17:47 Binding the fretboard
    22:26 14:11:42 Done for today and on to the next episode

And if you forget your password for the website (which I have) the option to reset the password never works, meaning you have no access to your account. You can't even set up a new account as your email address is already in use with another account (the one that's impossible to access). Just a minor tip on fanfret guitars, the angle of the nut (eyeballed in this case) regulates which fret will be the perpendicular one and the way you do it is by aligning the perpendicular fret of each scale and mark from there. It's best to have the 7th be perpendicular (that's an opinion not a fact) since most people spend their playing time around that area. Happy building!

    I dunno if these are going up fast enough for suggestions to help, but I have one: Explorers have a tendency to be surprisingly neck-divey for something that appears to have a big damn ballast at the tail end--and that's when they're solid and 14 lbs of guitar. I know putting the strap button on the back of the heel on your center line isn't ideal for playing in the upper register, but it might be necessary for balance. In my experience, it really doesn't get in the way as much as one might fear, either. It also eliminates the need for strap locks for reasonable use.

    Excellent stuff Ben! I know it sounds quite simple but I'm hoping that you can give a little advice regarding using bearing guided routers with respect to "tear-out", it frustrates the hell out of me, I notice hat you have a straight fluted simple cutter and don't seem to have any bother. I'm getting quite afraid of doing it now and will stop before any tight curves/corners and finish those bits with an oscillating sander, I've even invested in one of those fancy spiral cutters (Whiteside) at great expense, I'm using it in a router table and quite an industrial 1/2 router but have still had tear-out with it...Grrr...Could you give some advice, router speed etc anything that could help please!!!

    Build a guitar in 2020 minutes (33 and a half hours ish) and the students decide what you build

    Still curious about that headstock. I seem to recall that you deliberately planed a twist into it (down at the treble side?). Care to tell or will all be revealed "in the fullness of time"?

    There's a video of a guy building a guitar with no power tools, he used that same "rabbet plane" to route out the truss rod cavity!

    Love the videos as always , Ben you use super glue quite a bit for your bindings and inlays and I am curious ! do you use it on all your builds ? or just for the these types of builds ? also is there a reason that you dont use the accelerator for this process . Thanks for sharing

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  4 года назад +1

      Hey Darin, I use.it for inlays all the time but wood binding I would normally use wood glue.. this time time was tight. I don't use accelerator all the time, it is nasty stuff to breathe in for starters and if I don't really need it I will avoid it. Thanks for commenting! B

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars

      Not really.much in it unless the superglue floods the slots.. and in this case time.is of the essence. Normally I would use wood glue. B

    Loving the build and the contrast of the padauk and bog oak is stunning. One question, wasn’t it going to be fanned fret? Oh, the idea of Crimson coffee is that someone suggested is genius 🤙🏻

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  4 года назад +1

      we are working on a Crimson's Cool Beans Coffee brand as I type, I just want a good solid supply of stuff I like and even more of an excuse to drink it! It is fanned fret, just fairly gentle from Fender to Gibson scale is only about an inch difference. B

    • @simcoe75
      @simcoe75 4 года назад

      Aha, I’ll have to keep checking the shop to order some once all is set to go. Coffee is my fuel of choice too, I reckon you could work with ear plugs and an intravenous drip fitted too 👍🏻 I actually remember now you’ve said it about the subtle fanning of the frets. I’ve only ever seen the extreme stuff similar to Ibanez stuff 🤷‍♂️

    Watching this almost a year later, Dec 29, 2020, in Canada. Currently "non essential" anything is, for all intents and purposes, prohibited due to Covid, so at @17:15 cutting out non essential tasks kinda made me chuckle

      we're heading towards another lockdown here as well, and the bulk of the country is already closed.. non-essential indeed! I'm loving the fact that I now have a workshop at home and that I can carry on with everything from here while avoiding the world.. good luck with you and yours! B

    Seven cups of coffee a third of the way into the build. At that rate, if you didn't pause, pee breaks alone would carry this waaaay over the 20:20 time limit...

    If I wanted to add a bunch to electronics to my guitar like looping overdrive Etcetera,what pick UPS you think I should use in my esp F50. Also on the fly recording with an sd card would be rad.
