That was a wonderful analysis. One part that i really like about the VP version is where Layne stops so the others can put in a few notes and then fills back in during the bridge.

Awesome analysis. I laughed when you said how easy Geoff made those bass runs seem. Apparently when Layne told Geoff he was being given the third solo including those riffs and runs Geoff said “Nope, basses don’t do runs.” Esensially Layne and Eli had to make it a challenge to do it 🤣 That being said Geoff now has regularly done riffs and runs in his solo work.

If memory serves, the woman on stage with Chris singing is his wife.

Appreciate you not saying VoicePlay is not a true acapella because they use a violin. I also love that they opt to pay homage 😊

I had heard parts of Chris Stapleton's version, but not the whole thing. I know it's iconic, I know it's the standard that has to be met, but I like Voiceplay's better.
I'm still voting for a trifecta of Man of Constant Sorrow. You could do a very old version by the Soggy Bottom Boys or George Clooney in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou, then Home Free and Geoff.

The woman singing with him is Morgane, his wife and mother of his 5 children. She's a powerhouse singer in her own right! Check out them singing You Are My Sunshine. She'll knock your socks off. It's hard to believe anyone wouldn't know Chris Stapleton and his 8 Grammys?? Check out him and Justin Timberlake singing Tennessee Whiskey/Drink You Away at the CMA's. Voiceplay looks like amateur night compared to Chris. Sorry, not sorry. :)

I do really like Chris Stapleton's and glad that VoicePlay really trusted the work Chris did. But I LOVE VoicePlay's version just because it speaks to me. Do check out the Classical Chaos which is VoicePlay's drop today.

Hey Panda! I would love for you to entertain us with your analysis and comparison of Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey" and Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind". Don't get me wrong here, Girl. I'm not looking to wallow in controversy, or dig around in old accusations. These two songs and their singers have had enough of the business end, without enough comparing the beauty of their performances, or the skills of the performers.
If you accept this little challenge, I'll leave it your prerogative to choose which of Miss Etta's performances to use (if you just can't decide, try "Montreux 1975", no no...there's a duet with Dr John mmm [edit]). They are many and varied, each with their own virtues. As for Mr. Stapleton's, his consistency may make the chore a little easier. But go with what speaks to your soul.
Music is a fluid thing. And beautiful music needs lovin, no matter whose name is on the label. What say you? Stay warm, my friend - Judy
