Jesús PV, this is a wonderful collection of rare and unusual ways for Cale & crew to present their recorded stuff on the road. Cale always kept things fresh by drawing on his wide moody range of grooves and ways into his attempts at writing simple melodies (he did want to make a living if not a killing with his ever moody studio sessions). There are a couple of clunkers here that no amount of live stage interplay can turn into interesting numbers. How "Katy Kool Lady" ever made it from outtakes onto one of the PolyGram re-issues of the old and otherwise evergreen and freshly simmering "5" album (perhaps bnest use of horns on any Cale record) after Leon Russell sold his Shelter Records label remains a mystery.
Other outtakes that slipped onto that "5" album when reissued, like "Outta Style" are truly revelations from Cale's discard bin. Thanks in large part to the piano sound that studio session gets, I think from Neil Young's favorite Nashville session piano player. The one time I saw Cale in a larger room like the Stanta Monica Civic and have horns on stage for that subtle studio counter-groove warm breezes of rhythm were special occasions that I hope get a proper board tape release, cuz John and Jim Karstein along with Christine always had a VHS tape for that wide-band sound rolling to catch whatever magic was to be found on their road work sessions. Wispy groove tunes like "Bringin' It Back (from Mexico)..." really were special when they had a horn or three playing on the road with them in tight groovin' formation. (like the arrangements on the "5" album tracks....
Anyway, Jesús PV, sure wish you were employed curating this kinda collection on a label with some respectful approach to musical distribution. Cale and crew, especially his creative and life partner Christine Lakeland. She's seemed to me among the most undersung individualist song stylists and writers in the bid-net and stuff from her independently produced sides that sometimes had Cale playing well with his and her playmates in the shadows. Now that'd be something I'd love to visit a record shop and find in Cale's bin of reissues. Or find a bin for Christine's DIY issued albums. Her songs and sides truly hold up over time. She writes about the struggles to maintain a lasting thing in a world designed and built for erosion.
Z"L Rest In Play dear Tulsa Time Breezy Cale and wondrous rare road reeds man Steve Douglas on these gems of eternity on those club dates when Steve's wife and daughter would give him a permission slip to tour after he'd retired from a life of Wrecking Crew session heroism in the studio mines cheek by jowl hemarhoids a janglin' with Leon Russell...Also, RIP to that groovin' collector of tapes hisself, Tulsa Timekeeper par excellance, Jimmy Karstein who I was sure would live forever.
    Keep on doing,
Health and balance to you and your family & circles.
    In shared musical grooving thrall,
    Tio Mitchitio
PS - Anytime a Cale set I caught when he came through No Cal featured his never properly released "Blonde Headed Woman" (gotta be inspired by his partner Ms. Lakeland) I knew would be a special set turning whatever rock, blues roots dive where the band was booked into movable paradise......

Interesting to hear a version of Digital Blues, ten years before release. Amazing guitar tone on that.

I was at that SF gig and we were sick of Silicon Valley rich cats buying up all the Bay Area's once affordeable and bohemian crash pads driving up the rents and trying to turn one of the world's most wondrous waterside communities on all sides of the Bay, ocean, peninsula and rivers\streams into some Hollywood version of a snake scheming hustlers' Eden....
I'm sure Cale when he did studio work on "Digital Blues" and "Artificial Paradise" meant for there to be dark overtones on the devil in the piles of money and over-valued greed flooding that No Cal and Silicon Valley adjacent paradise Cale, Christine and band mates appreciated while it existed. You caught that with "Santa Cruz" here on your astute curation of this hummer of a rhythm cat's set.
Like with Clapton's ham-handed take on "Cocaine" the masses truly were asses in the rock star rooms when "Cocaine" was played without the dark overtones of cautionary that Cale would later emphasize is what he intended that track to possess. Rather than the high as a kite celebrations that did so much human, animal and elemental damage to our laid-back world...............
      Keep on doing, Jesús PV.
Roll On in Health and balance,
      warmly and appreciatively yours,

In 1985 Mark Knopfler played with JJ Cale. Do you have any record of this show? Thanks.

I lived in the No Cal region when after Dire Straits gig at an outdoor amphitheater for thousands on a big lawn, Knopfler directed their tour bus up the peninsula to Marin County where Cale and his combo with Christine were playing at Jeannie Patterson's SWEETWATER bar and cafe for the few hundred folks who could fit into the small room. I caught Cale and crew the very next night cuz they were playing a weekend of shows while Knopfler and Dire Straits as rock radio gods could fill the big fields and stadia in one night and move on down the road with their convoy of tour busses.
However, I don't think those VHS tapes used from the soundboard to get the wider sound band ever got pressed and stamped for any kinda release and I've never heard them. Only from folks who were lucky enough to have been in The Sweetwater and of course Jeannie herself hosting that kinda ruckus of Dire Straits convoy of tour busses and entourage trying to squeeze down Mill Valley's Throckmorton Ave and down into the basement which was usually kept as a band lounge for between-song sets. Dire Straits with Cale's combo in the vaults is probably part of the PolyGram long distance bid-net planning. Time and scarcity add value to the bid-net coffers of the speculators. John, Christine and their bandmates knew who really owned their gig tapes. Go back and listen to album #8 with the Lakeland-Cale collaboration and classic part of their live shows for decades, "Money Talks."
