I think the reason Ned felt so uncomfortable with "1000 things" line is because it's not actually Michael's line. It's a quote from a movie that he says because it makes him feel like an action hero when he robs and kills people.
The “pal” at the end of the first half of Michael’s parting phrase to a surviving heist victim really does make it work. Without it the two sentences are too uniform and blocky, so it rounds it off and adds a little humanity back into to an otherwise cold line with an implicit threat.
Ned doesn't realize how genius it was that when Trevor shows up he tries to protect Jimmy-- it shows that the whole game, there IS a good father somewhere deep in there, and we get to see that come out later in the game. It becomes a brilliant bit of foreshadowing while also showing that even if the kids and Amanda don't realize it, and even if he's really bad at showing it, he does cares about them. Great choice in that scene.
Nailed it. I always thought that is was part of the script. Always appreciated that little moment because it proves that Micheal does really care about his family.
