    Who would not understand what the role of a pipe organ is in the liturgy? Organists and organs have to be protected for future generations.

      Sadly, they are prohibitively expensive now. One million at least, for anything somewhat sizeable. 5 million and up for a cathedral size space, matching what we hear in this video.

    I visited Westminster Cathedral in January. It is a marvellous building and what perhaps impressed me most was the atmosphere of worship. I caught the start of an evening Mass too. Tremendous.

      Mass Times are listed on their website. Because of Covid the cathedral is closed to the public.
      I would normally try and attend the 5.30 pm Mass when the cathedral school choir are there. www.westminstercathedral.org.uk/masses.php

    I 'm unconditional of Pierre Cochereau as Master of contemporary Organ and of his Te Deum record in ND de Paris, where I sang as chorus-singer.
    BUT I'm really fascinated by this fabulous alernatim Te Deum of Martin Baker, with these always surprising and still more modern changes of tonality. I'd liked really much ! thank a lot Martin Baker, and glory with Pierre Cochereau.

    Magnificent! I am not Catholic. My wife and I are Evangelical Christians. However, I do have a background in traditional and classical music. Theological differences aside, I can certainly appreciate the uplifting quality of this music. The mighty Willis III organ could use more upperwork, in the form of brighter mixtures, for it has only two mixtures in the manuals. This is not so much a complaint as it is a wish.

    • @andrewbennett2582
      @andrewbennett2582 3 года назад +4

      I’ve no idea how you can be an evangelical after listening to this. Truly the thin veil between heaven and earth has been rent during this music, and Our Lord Jesus Christ has returned from the heaven of heavens, in like manner as in his first perfect incarnation, to dwell among us men and give the highest praise to his and our Father who reigns above us in glory everlasting. Te deum laudamus

      @@andrewbennett2582 I had not intended to get into a theological debate, but because of the truth of God's word and through the evidence of the Holy Spirit in my soul, and in all the glory of God I see in this broken world, I cannot let myself be drawn in to religious denominations of man's invention, with all of the excesses of doctrine and practices that are the identity of Roman Catholicism and other religions. I grew up Lutheran, later married a Catholic woman, who was my first wife, and am now married to a Pentecostal woman. I know a fair amount of various denominations, and I can appreciate the traditional arts. But, I know the true glory of Jesus Christ. As glorious as the music may be, It is only a shadow of Christ's glory. Neither the music or the pageantry and pomp of man's religions will determine my faith. Peace to you.

      @@samschaeffer8236 The Willis III is a masterpiece voiced to perfection - the culmination of a life’s work spanning 3 generations, and arguably the finest organ in England. The dark sound of the tutti in this vast, cavernous space is like no other - adding bright mixtures would ruin it, frankly.
      After all, it’s an English Romantic organ, not a spiky neo-classical box of whistles.

    The comparison with the Pierre Cocherau Te Deum is fascinating. Obviously this recording is much newer. This one sounds really English (and great); the other, very French (and great). It's nice being able to hear the choir clearly in this one (they're a little distant in the recording from Notre Dame). Since this is basically a French form that's being rendered in an English (RC) cathedral, I guess you might be able to suggest that the Cocherau Te Deum is 'better,' in the sense of being the real deal, but this Te Deum is fabulous and, possibly a little easier to listen to. Those Cavaille-Coll reeds at Notre Dame are absolutely awesome, but I quickly find them overwhelming; for me, a brief listen is plenty. I prefer the somewhat darker sound of the Willis organ here.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 9 лет назад +3

      OldPost661 It's not just C-C reeds you hear at ND - some are older, but what really dominate are the modern chamades by Jean-Loup Boisseau - thankfully tamed some years after Cochereau's death.
