The fact that this scene was replaced by that fight scene in the movie just boggles my mind. This explains why the thunderbolt was important to the plot -- it would actually take them to Gorr. In the movie, they're just like "Thunderbolt is strong so let us borrow it". Also, this movie desperately needed more quiet, dramatic scenes like this, rather than the overabundance of messy CGI fights that we got.

And it got so far that it was filmed and had effects added. Makes me want to see the original script because this is a FACINATING change.

It would give herc a personally reason to hate Thor like the end credits, but now you aren't forced to have Zeus on his son's side per se. You can go either way, leave him out of it, etc.
According to mythology Zeus is known for being wise, fair, just, merciful and prudent this scene fits Zeus character so much better than what we got in the film
Zeus is anything BUT fair, just and merciful in Greek Mythology. If anything, the movie version is much closer to the mythological Zeus than a lot of versions. Though in all fairness, Zeus could be just and fair at times. Doesn't change the fact this scene is several galaxies better than the weakling we had.
This Zeus is better than a one note joke and this Thor feels like the old Thor from the first 2 movies… that scene with the hammer was too silly even for this film.
Like everyone else here says, we should've had this Zeus. Have him teach Thor to open his heart to explain how he was able to power the kids. And if they wanted to have the Hercules anti-hero story, they could've had Gorr kill Zeus and have Hercules believe it to be Thor. Zeus should've visited Thor with his wound after the Omnipotence City scene and have a heart to heart about his flaws, the needs of the people and its consequences such as Gorr's attacks and Thor's attack on Zeus and finishing it off with the open your heart lesson. That way, Gorr killing Zeus would be really meaningful and Hercules could be somehow made to believe that Thor killed his father in Omnipotence City.
You know what could've worked? Just when thor asks for the lightning, then after zeus said no he should said : "Just kidding, meet me [insert location] after this." That could've worked better

While this scene answers how Thor understood how Thunderbolts work, the more intriguing question is how is Zeus chill with him after Thor attacked and humiliated him recently? Getting thunderbolt after losing strombreaker makes more sense instead of requesting thunderbolt when thor already had strombreaker.
