    I use "rubberized mulch" sold in the garden department of the local hardware store, used for landscaping. Simply fill a cardboard box with it and stick a shoot n c target on the side of the box.

    Great video gary. Here is another silent trap you can try. Use a standard pellet catcher place an old t towel at bottom then fill with plastercine till it's 1inch from top.super quite. 7 bars of plastercine cost 20 quid and it will fill 3 traps but once trap is full you can separate pellets and use plastercine again. Hope this helps.😊

    Melted some lead inside a metal tray a few years ago and since use it as the back plate of my pellet cacher. When the lead pellets hit the lead plate you only hear a little smack. The pallets usually stick in the plate. Very clean. Once a year I melt the plate and spoon the excess lead off. For "experimentation purposes..." ;-)

    The two quietest silencers I’ve heard are the Weihruach which is the Benchmark and the quietest is the A and M TWINK which is ridiculously quiet the pellets hitting the target are the loudest part of the shot. It’s that quiet you think nothing came out of the barrel.

    Great video Gary. For a quiet back stop i use a paving slab and some carpet. The loudest sound is the pellet hitting the paper or card target. I once left a target out in the rain and you couldnt hear the pellet hitting it. Hope your on the mend, take care.

    One of the quietest backstops I have is some old conveyor belt that I use as a backstop it catches them and they bounce off sometimes depending on how powerful your shooting and the other good one is like a mud flap from like a semi truck those are strong and make good backstops

    fyi ;) The inventor of the "silencer" was Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (british) inventor of the machine gun. As well as the Silent Firearm US patent 1909 he invented the exhaust silencer for infernal combustion engines at the same time ca.1902. A swiss chap Jakob Stahel had invented a silenced humane cattle killer in 1892.

    some years ago at our old address, someone started taking potshots at the pigeons on the roof of our house whilst we were in the garden. It was obvious that they were using a silenced pcp gun but the loud whizz noise of pellets flying over our heads was quite terrifying. Now years later, I'm the one with a gun but no matter how silent I make the gun and target, I don't think the whizz noise can be reduced

  • @CountDadLord

    Dude, decibels work on a log scale. A 10 decibels drop is a 50% reduction in perceived loudness. If that db meter is working correctly, the difference between 80 and 90 should be massive.

    Try saw dust in a cardboard box

  • @jeffslade1892
    @jeffslade1892 Месяц назад +1

    Putting scientist hat on. 3dB is double the sound pressure level (SPL) but 10dB is subjectively twice as loud; it has a logarithmic scale. The standard placement of a dB meter would be 1 metre in front of the muzzle and 1 metre off to the side, this is for consistency when testing. The way a Maxim works is by changing the SPL, slowing it down, in other words, dropping the pitch of the note produced. Silencer or moderator, same thing really; Maxim called it a silencer but it moderates the SPL. The primitive hair curler silencer just absorbs noise, it is not a moderator.
    If you have dropped ~10dB you have halved the volume, plus you have dropped the pitch of the note.

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV  Месяц назад

      So, am in incorrect in my description? When you are using a sound meter it will read a shot at say 8odb, then the next shot at 82 then 81.
      There's virtually no difference in sound.

    • @boxiedog
      @boxiedog Месяц назад

      The sound level meter in your phone is not great at percussive noises, but as a rule of thumb, at a distance of 2m, a measured reduction of 3db(a) is reducing the perceived volume by half.

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 Месяц назад

      @@ShootingCountryTV true, the typical human ear can only discern a change of 3dB. A musicians trained ear might manage 1dB. It is not just that though, our ears are more sensitive to quiet high pitch sounds, a predator lurking in the grass nearby, than to loud deep notes, a herd of elephants miles away. At low level we boost the bass on the hifi. At high level, a rock band, we turn the bass down. If we can make the retort of an airgun not just quieter but lower pitch, it is less threatening.

    My wierauch pcp goes off like a real ear popper without its moderator, with it on, anyone in the next room wouldnt be aware of its distcharge.
    Also a impressed target in a lump of blue tack makes very good noise absorbion, and it captures the pellets as well as being reusable time and again.
    Even pellet on pellets get captured in a clump.
    Ive got spinners and resettable metal target boxes, the blue tack with a push in target impress (with a black marker to mark the centre) does it better.
    Plumber's putty maybe not be too friendly to handle to reuse, bluetac sticks to most things and can reshaped without gloves

    I have found that when filming the mics pick up and amplify the oddest of things at times.
    How loud is that hammer spring on the Ghost, very pingy and probably louder than the exiting pellet
    I've found that when I've had a camera set up down range I can't hear the muzzle noise or rifle, that includes the springers. However, being close to it it does sound loud?

    Regarding pellet travel, at night time my .22 pcp from the shooting end would sometime make a wheee to the target, but not always, perhaps atmosphics has something to do with it, also my Weirauch moderator used to be so quiet until it wasnt any more, could it have been the changing from .22 to .177?
    The moderator has the same internals and pellet exit to cover both calibres, if I chose .25 calibre model and it had a just fit pellet exit, would that be quieter than the other calibre options?
    During WW2 the SOE had a silenced pistol with baffles that had no holes to allow a projectile to pass (there was some cross cuts though), the projectiles made the holes.
    With the kit came a spare set of baffles to replace the ones that got degraded in operations, perhaps the same principle applies to some degree.

    The flight noise might be an air version of cavitation in water. Sand is the best as it self heals but only if its dry. Lead in a pan, tray or similar is very good indeed but dangerous to DIY. Plumbers putty does not self heal like sand nor does cloth if you shoot the same spot. A concrete slab pitched forward I would say is essential. The pellet can leave the boundary if you have perm. A friend had a garden range that backed on to a field he had perm for too. It is 50 feet from the centre of the carriageway ie under 17 yards and its from the centre So if you shot from the centrea reservation of the M4....... your unlikely to hit the sides. You must cause reason for distress to travellers on the highway to contravene the law within 50 from the centre sp 25 feet each side Not the precise wording though. Probably only likely if your gaden borders a road or path within the 25 feet
    If in doubt ask if an FEO can visit and assess. It took me over 6 months to have a 2nd cabinet inspected and approved so good luck with that. Some rifles can be very quiet - my FAC Impact Mk2 is as quiet as my sub 12 HW100 with an HW mod.... apart from the impact noise.... out of choice I would go dry sand every time. It stops really well. Self heals and you can recover the shot lead clumps to recycle. The sand will become dust as the grains break down but its cheapish anyway

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV  Месяц назад

      Hi Roy, No, a 10 DB increase is just a increase, for example this is a list of loud things by DB. So, the rifle without silence is louder then traffic and with its less then a blender.
      120 dB: Fireworks
      110 dB: Live music gig
      100 dB: Night club
      97 dB: Fire alarm
      94 dB: Lawnmower
      88 dB: Heavy traffic
      85 dB: Food blender.

      dB is a measure of ratio so saying something is 120dB is like saying it's 120 times louder you need to reference a level. dBa is one reference for sound, and yes 10 dB is approx 10 times bigger, unfortunately human hearing is not linear so a noticeable increase in sound is approx 3dB i.e. twice as big ☹️

    Good stuff but sound measurement should be done 1-3 metres from the source. The microphone should not be placed facing the source, readings should be taken directly away from the source to 90 degrees from the source. Nuisance of sound is not measured in decibels dB but regularity of the sound. An empty wheelie bin having it's lid slammed shut makes a max 90dB, which is fine once or twice a day. Slam a wheelie bin lid shut every 5 seconds for an hour is a nuisance if you live in a town.
    A line of rich people blasting away at driven pheasants on a moor with shotguns is acceptable. A farmer with a pigeon scaring sound blaster going 24/7 next to a housing estate is a nuisance. Having S E X with a LOUD partner at midnight, with windows open in a semi detached house every night for 3 weeks is a nuisance.
    Just do reasonable things at reasonable times, be as considerate as you can and you will not fall foul of the law.
    So Gary consider yourself a reasonable person considering others. Cheers dude
