Interesting process. Okay, if you are dead set in restoring this car to OEM-ish, consider the following items. You have a 1990 Euro car. Just make sure you understand the differences between engines and transmissions if you are staying stock. No, they are all not the same through the 1989-1995 run. Ferrari made lots of subtle changes that remain largely unpublished. Early cars (1989) use Motronic 2.5, a very simple engine management system. Later cars use 2.7 with it's 2 throttle position sensors. There is a huge difference in the mapping. Early cars had dual-plate clutches which were changed to single plate and they are not interchangeable. Not a big deal, but make sure you have all the right parts and you can convert them if you wish. Personally, the 2-plate is superior, but it isn't worth the conversion as parts are way more costly. Early cars have a heavy dual can muffler while later cars were fitted with a single-can version - which is way better. The transmissions have different drop gears depending on year - there are 3 different sets. Opt for the Spider gears if possible, they are the most aggressive and they are interchangeable. The engine timing is different for US and other cars - not much, just a degree or three accounting for some smog compliance issue, I think. I think there are 2 different ECUs for the model and we have found at least 3 different sets of chips for them. Try to find a Challenge set. If not, let me know; I think I can find one for you. They are slightly better than the originals. Stress slightly. We have never found a period aftermarket set that worked worth a damn. Otherwise the later Spider chips are best. As for fuel pressure regulators, early cars use a lower pressure - 3.0 bar? - versus later cars using the 3.8 bar. They have the same part number and they are a bitch to find. The last Ferrari-boxed one I saw was $1100! I went through 4 used ones before I converted to adjustables and that was a trip itself. Let's see, the battery in your car is in the engine bay, but later it moved to in front of the front tire in the fender/wing well so mind the wiring. Early cars are rated at 297 HP; later ones 312 HP US and 320 Euro. That is why you upgrade. Plus the drop gears are worth about .3 to .5 seconds improvement 0 to 60 depending. Shoot while you are at it, install spacers in the rear (15mm from Hill) to widen the stance and improve handling. Good luck! I almost forgot there are 2 different alternators; use the later one. That’s the Nippon Denso part.

Does upgrading any of these items risk diminishing value from perspective of someone wanting the originality of an early car>

I would think not unless you are dealing with one of the few collectible versions of the 348. Speciale, Challenge, Competizione specifically. Also for a near showroom version any year that someone one might value as a garage queen. Otherwise go ahead and mod away. Then drive the crap out of it!

Scott - for your air box hoses, you might want to consider trying urethane bumper paint in flat black. It is rubberized and might do the trick. I would try a small section on the bottom of the hose at first to see if it comes out how you want it to look. Keep at it, the change is significant so far!

After 44 years in the nuclear industry I can set your mind at rest regarding any radiation hazard. If it had had any radioactive contamination deposited on the surface (highly unlikely) then it would have been in negligible quantities and would have simply washed off in the rain even before it received its thorough jet washing. Serious levels of e.g. gamma radiation (radiation being a different thing to contamination) come from strong radioactive sources, not a bit of contamination on a surface. That all being said, it was an amusing interlude! BTW, carefully remove the caterpillar from under your nose and glue it to an old toothbrush handle for use in cleaning all those important little places on the Ferraris…

since the shop on number 27 said it costs 70,000 to 80,000 pounds to electrify his 308 you really cant go that route and make money besides youve already got a good tesla

Thats a VERY VERY good point, im not spending that on a 348 !

If you’ve already sourced a cheap 348 drivetrain then maybe that’s best. Otherwise I was thinking a more modern ferrari power plant could be cool, 360 perhaps

A lot more likely to have been inundated with water from the tsunami! I vote for using a 348 engine.

UK background radiation is 2.7mSv per year , comes from sun

For the radiation, check the original air filter. If the car got driven in Japan post Fukushima disaster, the contamination got trapped here.

That looks like a toy doserate meter, not a contamination probe. If you suspect it has come from the disaster area, I would want to survey that using alpha & beta probes. Alpha is very nasty if it gets into the body

My first thoughts, and obviously other by the comments. Definitely a Magnum Pi tash! So if you’re planning a white 308 build anytime soon (and we’d love to see one) definitely keep it 😂 If not, I think your safe to loose it 👍🏼

I am surprised how well the new look the stash gives you!! LoL. But play it close to the vest on the resto. Great project. Terrific car, given your first hand experience. But if this little Indian goes off the reservation with budget. It may interfere with opportunity cost of other projects. Keeping fingers crossed.
