This is actually really common with big record-breaking feats, and is called The Bannister Effect. That's what it's called when someone breaks through what was previously thought to be impossible, and others are inspired by their success and follow through into the new possibility.

Also, what was he doing with his fingers while playing? He's using his left hand to play an upside-down controller and then his right hand is doing....I don't even know... o_O
It's a technique discover in 2020. Rolling. It somehow makes a reliable way to accomodate the pieces passed the level 29, at which point the game goes at a impossible high speed intentionally so you cannot move the pieces from place.

This is a pretty good explanation for the exact details. TLDR the original game is being played well past where the devs intended and the hardware can't keep up with the calculations
Actually it switches from reading from storage to reading off of what's currently in ram on certain levels, so at very particular instances when you clear a certain# of rows at once on those levels it can read from the ram and if in the ram there currently sits a stop code, or a mathematical mismatch between the CPU, then it can't finish that score calculation and the program hangs indefinitely waiting for a new code that it can't get. So there is a chance you can go past these kill screens and continue playing, so endurance races can still be done!

It's a technique called rolling that allows much faster inputs.
It's a technique. It involves tapping so you can press the the top buttons fast enough.
A relatively new method tetris speed runners started using. You rest your thumb on the button and then roll your fingers on the bottom to tap the button rapidly multiple times. It results in incredibly fast inputs, faster than humanly possible if doing it the normal way of mashing your finger up and down on the button.
They have to do this because after a certain point, the pieces fall too fast to reach the sides by just holding down left or right.
Can someone please explain what a kill screen is?
It's when the player reach the limit of the game code, so it crash. I'm not sure what trigger it in Tetris, but since it's a 8 bit game, I guess they reached some value somewhere in the code that goes over that limit.

Explained simply(?), the code NES Tetris becomes very inefficient at higher levels, which eventually triggers a glitch where the game starts reading the RAM (short for 'random access memory', basically the game's workstation where it does all the calcs and stuff) as if it were game code (instructions for what the game should do next). As the game reads RAM as code, sometimes the game interprets something from the RAM as a stop command, which causes the whole game to freeze up. It's not the most consistent thing in the world, getting the killscreen depends on things like what piece you have, how many lines you clear, or what level you're on. For example, clearing a single line as you enter level 155 has a 100% chance of triggering a killscreen, the earliest possible killscreen actually, and the one fractal got to trigger. Another potential killscreen has about a 73% chance of occurring as you clear a single line as you enter level 157. This is the killscreen Blue Scuti managed to trigger, being the first time a human player had ever reached an NES Tetris killscreen

I believe he's counting the number of lines completed to progress onto the next level. In the majority of levels, it takes 10 lines to progress to the next one. Lv155 is the earliest level where the crash is most likely to occur. A 16yr old managed to be the first person to achieve the killscreen (crash) at level 157. He missed the Lv155 crash as he completed too many lines at once, taking him beyond where the computer would crash and onto 156.3 I believe. (edited for clarity).
He's counting to the transition. The earliest you can crash Tetris is the the 155-156 transition as long as you only transition on 1 line. If he had gotten the tenth line with a multiple line break he would've had to stay perfect 2 more levels like blue scuti. So he was counting to make sure he didn't accidentally clear multiple lines on the teansition
