    When I brought Gonzalo to Funchal Jazz (Madeira), the mayor of the city was next to me. As some noise settled around us, picked up the phone and after ten minutes, the street behind the stage was closed. It was a magnificent concert. This one, even Gonzalo doesn't know!!!

    I imagine that stepping onto the same stage as Gonzalo Rubalcaba is like getting into a cage with a tiger. Only for the bravest of the brave.

    Rubalcaba is totally a beast. This version of Autumn Leaves left me impressed. I had just seen his 1991 version, which was already truly amazing and unique. Now it turns out three years later he plays it in a more amazing and unique way. We are blessed to have a musician like Rubalcaba gracing our existence with this high musical quality.

      The Great late Chick Corea praised him at that 91' jazz fest when he played that autumn leaves

      That 1991 concert version with Patitucci and DeJohnette is amazing. I love how Chick Corea is watching Gonzalo with a smile on his face.

      that version was a little busy for me. Maybe I'm not ready for it yet. I'll check out this one though also. I probably just need more listened to get accustomed to his style. Amazing technique and rhythm for sure. Update: I loved this version. Ron is a perfect contrast to his playing. He left a lot of space in this also which I like. This one reminded me of the Ahmad Jamal version but More out there. Really cool.

    Must be a litte frustrating for the drummer,
    nobody can follow well enough to know when your solo is beginning or ending !!

      me too, they're on the same page, it's just up to us to keep concentration.
      (I asked some of his cuban sidemen from another jazz ensemble he had how they kept up with the even more complex compositions and concepts that Gonzalo will play with other cuban musicians (my preferred set up for his music). They said basically one word - Concentration, and plenty of it!

    • @msticdrumr
      @msticdrumr 10 месяцев назад

      The true artistry of these cats, in this regard, is that they know exactly when the drummer's solos (like fours for and example) begin and end but they deliberately stagger or overlap the end or begin points to make make the solos less "linear" or "cut and dry" so to speak! Makes the solos more interesting and challenging not only for the performers but to the audience as well! As they say, "They know what time it is!!!" Out of this world greatness on that stage and Carter (no WONDER he owns the Guinness World Record for the most recorded Jazz Bass Player of all time when the award was given to him!!!)
