My son was 4 last week. He asked for a Mater cake (character from Cars) but there was no way it was in my budget. So I bought a supermarket chocolate cake, bought a Mater, stuck it on top of the cake and added candles. HE LOVED IT! He kept saying ‘I get a cake and a TOY!!!’ 🤣🤣 so happy I didn’t spend £100+
Amazing job Lily! Love how you showed the whole process, struggle and all. I relate so much to this. For anyone out there who is interested, Cupcake Jemma's channel has master classes on icing and cupcakes.
This week’s vlog is real!! Luv it! I think not everything is about being pretty and perfect.. Love today’s vlog and the cupcakes looks amazing! I have similar fear of making a cake! You did well! Looking forward to next week vlog
You're right about baking being relaxing, I absolutely love it and it's my favourite thing to do when I have 'me time'. the best bit is obviously eating it 😊 ❤
As a mum of 2 I can relate to the pre birthday / birthday party stress! We've learnt (the hard way) & now buy a kids cake from Tesco, add simple decs / sweets / candles to match the theme & leave it at that 😊 Cupcakes are also a great idea & easy for party bags!
Curdling happens when too much egg is mixed too fast into the butter/sugar! Egg is predominantly a fat and butter is also a fat, so you’re trying to mix two fats together which don’t want to co-exist. The egg needs to be added gradually into the butter - during my chef training we add 1 tbsp beaten egg at a time - and then only beaten until combined before adding more so the butter doesn’t get freaked out and the mixture doesn’t curdle. If you add the egg too quickly and/or overbeat it in, your mix will curdle. You can remedy any curdling by adding a little bit of the flour! ❤
I know exactly how you felt with the icing and all the things related to a birthday cake “for guests”. My daughter is 3 and for her first and second birthday we ordered a cake. Cake number 1 was amazing, cake number 2 was very pricey and we didn’t like the taste of it. Turns out I thought I can do it myself. Which stressed me out, my kitchen looked like a mess and I had to bake 3 cakes instead of one cause number 1 and 2 were a fail! My mum who loves to bake asked my why I didn’t let her bake it or why I didn’t ordered one. I really want to be the mum who is able to bake a birthday cake for her daughter BUT I have to admit it stresses me out and I can’t do it under pressure! So I feel you ❤!
I have a vivid memory of my sister and I sitting at the kitchen island while my mum HOME MAKES a caterpillar cake for our joint birthday party (rolled in sprinkles). She was crying because it kept falling apart and we were telling her to keep going because she could do it 😆 funny memories now
Thank you for uploading a vídeo today even if you think its not good enough, it was lovely and relatable… i loved the part where you said: its one of those times when mama tries to save money and ends up spending more😂ive been struggling with the birthday thing for a while so well done! I think you did a pretty good job
Cupcakes for birthday parties is such a winner. I always do it for birthday parties as it's so much easier and cheaper and they actually prefer it! Although actually for my son's birthday this year I ended up doing a huge tower of Krispy Kreme doughnuts as we only have a temporary kitchen at the mo while we have work done on the house and the kids went WILD for that!
So Lily...as a non baker like you , I attempted to make my nephew's birthday cake... Was so happy with it then carrying it out of the car I dropped it and it went splat in the floor at the weekend..that was my epic cake fail. Yours looked fab
You saved the days and well done ....you can do more practice for next year's birthday and enjoy the process with your children watching and helping... You looked AMAZING at the baftas...and your hubby looks very smart .. great VLOG...a variety of everything 😊
Always love watching your videos, whether on a Sunday during nap time (lush!) or later in the week playing catch up. Next time you’re baking remember ANYONE can bake and most things can be fixed prior to baking it (that kinda sets it in stone). You might have been able to save the first batch of icing with a dash of milk. I also highly recommend Caroline Khoo’s ‘I’m Just Here for Dessert’. It’s a great baking book with everything you need to know for cupcakes and cakes. Happy Sunday! 🙂
Hey Lily 🤗 you did really well with those cupcakes - they turned out fab! I think it helps to have everything weighed out before you start (yes that might mean a few more bowls to wash but it definitely makes it less stressful) Also if the buttercream is ever a bit too stiff we just add a splash of milk and that works. Take care 🩷 xxx
I actually love baking, but I think the logistics of kids parties can be really tricky. Our kids tend to have one event with their friends and another with ectended family. So I tend to just make one cake, for the family event and buy something in for the friends. Got a selection box of Krispy Kremes for my son's last birthday and his mates loved it. Sometimes simple is best! Cupcakes next year sounds like a great idea!
The cake struggle is real! We’ve done so many different things over the years but perhaps the easiest was normal sized Colin the Caterpillar and mini Colins to send home. We now, at 10, do ice cream cakes as Bea has grown to hate icing! Your final cake looks lush! X
The little jingle about just paying someone else to do it truly resonated with me. My new mantra shall now be: Would Lily just encourage me to pay someone else to get 💩 done? If the answers is yes, then 💸 ...
Oh God Lily! Im going to try for the first time to do a birtday party for my 4 years old son in september. The cake is always expensive if you buy it or stressfull if we make it. But kids dont really care for that, its an "adult" thing. Anyways, im going for the expensive cake in september, i've got enought stress. Thanks for sharing it was a big lesson for me.
Hi Lily. Thank you for showing us what it’s really like when you bake but you’re not a regular baker. This is real! But well done! The outcome was great!
Less than 15? Omg.. Not in Norway! You can get a 6 pieces cake for about 25. Bigger than that coast a lot. But I would absolutely make my own. Even if you're nt good at baking, make a normal chocolate cake and put some toys or decor on top. It's crazy how expensive people make a childs birthday these days.
I do bake but I too get overwhelmed with doubling the ingredients and always get stressed right before the party. I've had it before where the icing doesn't stick to the cake. So frustrating. You just want to make it special for your kid but it's always a rush last minute! You smashed it ❤
I’ve been in that pre-birthday party stress so many times and then when it comes to the party I realize it NEVER matters and half of the kids just want wotsits and party rings 🫣
For my 5th birthday my mum made me a kitten palace cake with meringue turrets! Safe to say the memory for her is very traumatic lol but I loved that cake so much and will always remember it :)
@@saskiavan-manen2822 thanks for the explanation. Still baffles me as why wouldn’t you make the effort as they grow and develop interests. I would completely understand if this was a challenge for a low income family. Anyway, each to their own I suppose.
Ah Lily I couldn’t relate more to the baking anxiety. So much pressure and I hate that it’s not something you can do in the days/weeks before in preparation, you have to wait til the day before and then panic-troubleshoot when things inevitably goes awry because *news flash* we’re not professional bakers…we’re busy mums 😅🙈 you smashed it though well done x
“Should’ve just thrown money at the problem”🎶😂😂

This bday party prep is so relatable!!!
How freaking relatable, adore you
I loved this vlog, as a fellow mum going through these crazy weeks at times, this was totally relatable and refreshing to see. Love your content
Totally agree❤
As a professional cake decorator, you forgot that the things you find easy is hard for other people!! Still nailed it sis xx
Watching my sister bake is WILD. She doesn't even have to think about it.
Amazing job Lily! Love how you showed the whole process, struggle and all. I relate so much to this. For anyone out there who is interested, Cupcake Jemma's channel has master classes on icing and cupcakes.

How lovely for Grey to watch this when she was older and know how much care and effort you made for her birthday xx

Haha your comment made me giggle. 😂 that would have been something my sister & I would have done back in the day no doubt!
I loved this. I laughed the whole way through - not at you but because it’s so relatable.

We got a 10 inch rainbow cake from Rinkoff's, wonderful customer service, delicious cake and had so much cake for leftovers.

Best, most relatable vlog!
as a professional baker who makes a LOT of kid's cakes, I hope you've got a new found respect for us 🤣
So Lily...as a non baker like you , I attempted to make my nephew's birthday cake... Was so happy with it then carrying it out of the car I dropped it and it went splat in the floor at the weekend..that was my epic cake fail. Yours looked fab

Loved this vlog! Think you did a great job with the cakes!
If you put a little flour in with the eggs it prevents the eggs scrambling. Asda do bigger kids cakes that you could add too, will be less than £20
The little jingle about just paying someone else to do it truly resonated with me.
My new mantra shall now be:
Would Lily just encourage me to pay someone else to get 💩 done?
If the answers is yes, then 💸 ...
Great idea Lily to pimp the cake!! Looked fabulous! Also highly recommend the tuna melt from Emily’s book, it’s got capers in it! 😊Xx
The cake and cupcakes are more than enough! Guessing Grey loved it! Even though they didn't eat it ;)

Lily you are the best 💖💯
Even £35 I think is mad. Most supermarkets do birthday cakes for less than £15?

Genuinely curious, are there no boxed caked mixes in England?
There are! I love baking but I've definitely used a boxed cake mix to ensure no failure for the birthday cake!
Being a train Chef, you only want to fill the papers 3/4 the way full to allow for the rise of the cake batter.
I’ve been in that pre-birthday party stress so many times and then when it comes to the party I realize it NEVER matters and half of the kids just want wotsits and party rings 🫣
Oh Lily don’t be cheap😂😂
For my 5th birthday my mum made me a kitten palace cake with meringue turrets! Safe to say the memory for her is very traumatic lol but I loved that cake so much and will always remember it :)
Do they not have boxed cake mix in the UK?
The cupcakes look so good!! Whats the cupcake recipe??
I love your cupcakes, looks profesh!
I’m confused, why wouldn’t you want to set a precedent for special cakes?
Every birthday cake will be special. I think she just means you don't want to end up having to spend more and more every year to outdo the year before
@@saskiavan-manen2822 thanks for the explanation. Still baffles me as why wouldn’t you make the effort as they grow and develop interests. I would completely understand if this was a challenge for a low income family. Anyway, each to their own I suppose.
Fabulous cake!every little girls dream ❤
Loved this! 🧁 Can I ask where your sunglasses are from? 😎

still loving your hair so much
Where are your lovely sunglasses from?
If that ever happens again with the icing, just add a little milk and it will loosen it up x
The curdle might be from the ingredients not being room temp ☺️
Where are your sunglasses from?
Omg all that extra work I’d rather spend £90 🤣🤣🤣 I’d be the worst mum 🤣
Guess: Kids only ate the frosting from the cupcakes and only 4 spoons from the cake so you had to throw most of the cake away 😊.
James Acaster on bake off vibes
hey lily
I feel U, I hate baking.
It is more crative and rewarding.
Baking give’s me anxiety 🥹
