my REAL-WORLD first impressions with the FUJIFILM X-H2S - a videographer’s perspective

  • READ THIS IMPORTANT things I forgot to mention:
    + I had the camera for about 2 days, only for this specific project.
    + Except for a few clips, this footage is unstabilized (in post) as full clips from the camera. I was completely handheld, winds were nearly 30+ mph and it was 40ºF(cold!) while recording, so I was definitely shaking from the wind and cold while recording and in these were only test clips before my real project so I was pretty sloppy while shooting. This is truly an extreme stress-test performance. I say in the video that I see no artifacts, especially wobbles, but I meant to say I see no concerning artifacts and the reason I say that is because after testing stabilization in Davinci Resolve everything imperfect you see was able to be corrected even in these extreme conditions!
    + Adding the Tascam audio attachment (geni.us/tascamfuji) plus the Ninja V puts this camera near cinema camera capabilities! Plus, pairing the XH2S with Blackmagic Cinema Cameras is now an amazing option if you do any hybrid shooting and want BRAW.
    + Wooden Camera has already made a cage!! geni.us/woodenfuji

    This is awesome that fuji recognized your importance on this platform to current and potential fuji owners out there and reached out to you. I always wondered if a small part of you chose the fuji route knowing that it was the road less traveled in terms of many youtube creators, and that might make it a bit easier to make a name for yourself and get noticed. The thing is, the quality of your work shows through in all your videos, and no matter what platform you chose to shoot on, you would be making great content that is very enjoyable to watch. If it was in the back of your mind, I say good on you, because I think it would have been a wise move, and if not, then good on you anyway for being a great inspiration to the fujifilm community. Can't wait to see more with this setup. Congrats John!

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад +1

      Yo Sean!! Here's what's crazy, they hadn't seen any of my social media: no youtube, instagram, anything! I chose the XT3 well before RUclips because it checked all my boxes and got me excited. Then the camera made me so excited and I didn't see any helpful reviews so I made my first real youtube video, but not expecting to do anything more than that! So I can honestly say that I orchestrated absolutely none of this haha! I'm a Christian so I genuinely believe God directed my steps even without my knowledge and put me in this position, for which I am thankful!! Anyway, I'm glad to provide any inspiration to the Fuji community and I'm so stoked to create more with the camera!

    I wish Fujifilm would make a real cinema camera with the specs of the X-H2S. It would be a great camera for a great price I guess.
    Just imagine a Fujiilm camera with built in electronic ND-filter (without IBIS), XLR inputs, bigger body (a body like the Sony FX6 or Canon C300iii) with bigger batteries (maybe V-lock batteries), full size HDMI and SDI outputs and a desqueeze function for anamorphic lenses. It's great they reached out. I'm primarily a photographer but I don't see a lot of professional videography using Fuji cameras so I appreciate your thoughts. Only downside for me is none of the reviewers I've seen live in hot humid climates like the US south so we could see how the heat really affects the camera

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад +1

      Thanks!! I love fuji for video! as for heat tests, I'm in the hot humid midwest USA so once I get the camera heat tests will be high on my list, but with these preproduction units heat tests (& many other tests) are really hard to judge because it's not a final production model. Stay tuned for my future tests!

    Thank you for the video, John. This is a really tempting offer. I'm really holding out to see how the autofocus is in a production model. What I have seen so far from a variety of preview videos is that it is shaping up to be imperfect but promising! I don't like relying on AF, but I have more experience with manual focus in cinema bodies with lenses better suited for MF, so autofocus in an SLR style body is a very important tool for me since I am a bit slow with them! I appreciate your notes on the camera, keep it up!

It has a 42MP full frame sensor with IBIS and has great looking 4k video so it's pretty much all you need. Hi John, it was really great to hear your thoughts as a fellow videographer. For me, the XT3 and the Pana S5 have been our cameras of choice. The S5 for reliability, low light and IBIS. The Fuji for AF on a gimbal. Blending Fuji and Panasonic would be perfect in my opinion. It doesn't look like the IBIS is quite there for me yet. It doesn't look as smooth as the S5. I'll need to test it myself. But really looking forward to using this camera in the future. Fuji cameras just have something special.

      Panasonic and Fuji is a super fun combo actually! I have at least one friend of mine who does that and it works really well. Both have such beautiful colors and I find them very friendly for matching with V-Log and F-Log. We'll see about the IBIS on the final production camera.

    Great review man! Did you check your sharpening settings on the cam when shooting? May just be my eyes but the image looks good but very over sharpened like it’s in cam. Camera looks awesome and I think I may grab on but ibis still looks like crap. They didn’t learn yet unfortunately.

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад

      Hey Sean, I really appreciate it cuz I know you create some great work. In the full sun clips I def see what you see and I think it might be the cranked shutter cuz I had just received the cam and we went for a beach walk and I didn’t have ND. But also I didn’t turn off the sharpening in camera as I normally do. A few factors possible there but def user error. About the ibis, I’ll say everything you’re seeing in my video is from a prerelease camera, shooting handheld in extreme conditions with no post stabilization, more details in the video description. I’ll definitely be including some real testing whenever I review the final production camera, we’ll see.

Love your down to earth style and the images and video you've captured are so amazing, definitely inspiring to see a true artist rather than simply a gear reviewer. As an X-T4 user I am considering picking one of these up as a second body for hybrid shooting, currently use the X100v but it's not really the best for low light and ofc the fixed lens is limiting.

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад

      Oh man Sir Joshua that’s a BIG question haha!! Frustrating answer but it really does depend on your wants/needs. I’m honored you would entrust me to provide advice. My advice for complete beginner often times is to rent each camera you’re interested in for a week! Especially if you’re in the US camera rental is so easy through reputable shops and a few websites! Then you could get your hands on the cameras and test which you love and inspires you and fits your needs. Here’s me trying to answer your question though. User experience: if you want a tactile vintage aesthetic experience it’s the XT4, but more modern ergonomics in a rugged package is the XH2S. Future proof? Many folks still use the XH1 and XT3, not to many other older Fuji cameras, to create beautiful photos and videos. See my friend Evan Schneider’s videos with the XT3. But technically the XH2S is more future proof. For a beginner the modern design of XH2 might help because it may feel less strange to you but with the XT4 it’s so fun and exciting because it’s so aesthetic. Sooo it’s hard to go wrong and they’re very different maybe try renting the XT4 now because the xh2s isn’t even shipping yet!

For professional purposes I always keep 2 bodies and I see these being near perfect companions. The XH2S becomes my workhorse and my XT4 becomes the assistant/backup for work but the primary camera for everything personal/fun, especially since I’ll probably pick up a smaller Fuji prime to pair with it!! Looking at the 23mm f2 I think. But if I had to choose just one it would depend on how much professional work I’m doing! If my camera is used less than maybe 60% for work then I’d probably go with the silver XT4 cuz I just love the aesthetic and it would still suit most of my professional use needs. But that’s all just me!!

    With external recorders you get very low media cost, extreme capacities if you need them, higher memory quality, a monitor, compatibility with other devices and many other features. With internal prores media you merely get better portability at a very high cost.
    The same applies to the sound solutions designed for the camera. They are smaller and sometimes store directly in the video files, but the cost is similar to external solutions with far superior AD converters, more channels, far better preamps, and compatibility with other cameras and standalone operation.

    XF10 owner, XPro-1 owner, XT3O owner, and an XT4 owner.. Absolutely LOVE Fuji cameras, obviously... Experience, colors, form, look, everything.. However... Using them for video is just something I will never really do. Don't get me wrong, I have in the past...and have videos with millions of views done with Fuji but, overrall...it's just not for me. On that new XH2 specifically tho, the IBIS....is a deal breaker. It looks like it still has that digitial jump/glitch to it thru the IBIS working.. I don't like that. I personally use the GH5/GH6 that do NOT have that jump / glitch to the IBIS...and I film a lot of short form / branded content on those cams. Or, the C500.. Fuji, for video...I just can't.

      I’ll let Junior speak to the GH6 question but about the ibis in this video, a few other folks have commented the same and I’ll say everything you’re seeing in my video is from a prerelease camera, shooting handheld in extreme conditions with no post stabilization, see the video description. Tengo varias Fuji XT y considero que la XH2s no entrará en mi equipo por considerarla muy cara una configurada para mis necesidades, 1º El cuerpo 2.700€ creo que es caro, mas 2º varias tarjetas CF Espress tipo B 1.000€, mas 3º grip 1.000€, mas 4º ventilador trasero 300 o 400€ ¿Exite otras alternativas mas económicas? • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад +1

      I also would’ve been happy about that switch. I did learn something interesting while working on this project: apparently the reason there’s not yet been ibis AND internal NDs in one camera before is because they contradict each other with both needing to use the sensor. Until there’s a big breakthrough in the tech camera companies will keep having to choose which to include!

    @14:06 "don't see any artifacts or wobbling" -- literally the ibis is shifting and drifting all about 😂. unfortunately looks like ibis is not great on the cam... possibly could be improved in firmware with smoother transitioning. also looks like nothing fundamentally changed in autofocus department. personally also LOVE the open gate aspect ratio here. so useful. and your footage looks really good John. beautiful images from this cam when used in cinema style...not so much for run and gun

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад

      Hey Corwin! I totally did mean to say no *concerning* artifacts, good catch! You can see the "jumping" or jitter, but I really don't see any corner wobbles as I've seen in the past. However, about the "jumping", I should have included some examples in this video, but in my testing all of that can easily be cleaned by a simple post-stabilization. For that reason, none of what you see in the video concerns me at all as per the performance of the IBIS. Then additionally, the description info definitely needs to be taken into account. I could have easily been more careful or if the weather conditions were different certainly then I don't think any of the visible jumps would be at all problematic for me personally. Annyywwayy haha yes didn't mean to say "I see nothing at all" because I do, however, no concerning issues for me! Also as per AF, in my opinion, it’s really worth waiting for real units to be used in real world situations to make determination there! I couldn’t disagree more about this not being a run’n’gun camera but hey to each their own!!

    • @corwingarber
      @corwingarber 2 года назад +1

      @@johnstamw that is a very good point. Indeed, none of that nasty warping, which is great! True, the bumpiness could be fixed with some stabilization in post and that would probably be chill for the average use case. Nice man all in all I really do love the offering… if you’re shooting a narrative project.. man this is i would estimate 80% of the way to an digital arri alexa 35mm look for wayyy cheaper, if you can control your lighting well enough..

      @johnstamw  2 года назад

      @@corwingarber completely agree about the quality of image for narrative, controlled pieces, but I do think if you personally do run’n’gun you ought to at least give it a chance because even the XT4 with its warbles and imperfect AF has blown me away in the field. Again with the ibis it’s hard to communicate how extremely not cautious I was while recording this test footage haha I really think it’s far less concerning than folks might think!

    • @corwingarber
      @corwingarber 2 года назад

      @@johnstamw noted! Yes, for me personally there are 2 styles I shoot in. One is the narrative style, where image quality is paramount, all can be manual. The other is essentially doc/ almost news gathering style livestream, where conditions are intense and changing rapidly. While I don’t rate ibis as the highest on must haves (The ibis is def fine enough), ibis is more of a very nice to have, it’s rather the autofocus that would be the dealbreaker here, when it compares to the a7siii.
