Welcome to Portugal, Ericeira is very developed nowadays, but it continues to be one of my favorite places. You have to try the Azores islands, there you will find the best meat in the world. Hugs from Lisbon.
My family lives on the island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal. We moved here from the US. Life is much healthier here with much less stress. You would enjoy the espetada skewers. It’s quite flavorful.
you so right, Im from Madeira living in Portugal continental, the best espetadas are from Madeira, you can probably find good ones in Trás os montes which is very north of Portugal but theres no better than Madeira, the best restaurant for espetadas in Madeira is in "camara de lobos" with the name of "santo antonio". its amazing, but here in portugal continental we have good food too, on the North of Portugal we have francesinha its delicious but its not everybody who can do it well, in the center west of Portugal (we call it Oeste which mean literally west) we have good meals with great meats too that make me cry for more (not exagerating), and in my opinion one of the best if not the best Portuguese meal is called "Cozido à portuguesa" with alot of different vegetables, meats, sausages and potatoes, the secret is just one, all you have to do is find someone who do this meals correctly and with passion.
Not a carnivore but I am a US expat here in Portugal. It's pretty easy to be plant based as well. But, you are correct, meat and fish are the main staples here.
Can you explain to me what an expat is? Is it an emigrant? An expatriate? I gather that no one expelled him from the United States, so he must be an emigrant. Either Americans are so undifferentiated that no one emigrates or it is shameful to say that one emigrated😂😂😂😂

Hi, I am Portuguese and love my country! Obviously biased 😅 but I had to emigrate because of the economy and now live in Ireland. I always had the privilege of eating well because we grew food and animals to eat. Organic produce all throughout my childhood! I find it easier to eat healthier back home than here in Ireland, despite the fact that life is easier economically speaking here. I wish we had better wages, I'd be back in a heart bit!
Just got back from Galicia (Spain, just above Portugal) and going back next month. The food and the price of living there is really good. Jamón Ibérico is expensive even in Spain, but incredibly healthful and delicious.
The price of jamón in Spain depends on the region of Spain. Of course it's expensive in Galicia, because Galicia is not where jamón comes from, but if you go to Andalusia then it's a little bit cheaper.
In Europe we walk a lot, easier to be in shape when you move more ❤ Im Irish but live in Spain 🇮🇪🇪🇦 there are great cheeses in Spain but Ireland has better milk and butter 😋
Best milk and butter in the world. Going anywhere on holiday I am shocked at how bad butter and milk is but yet cheese is often great 🤣 the cheapest butter in Ireland is much better than the most expensive in other places. I really like the beef and seafood in Portugal, it's alot like home just much cheaper. Got engaged there earlier this year went out to a fancy restaurant got starters, nice mains (ribeyes) drinks and dessert cheaper than going out for one person back home nuts.
@@yagsipcc287 I always wonder how good the Spanish cheese would be if they were using Irish milk!! This is my last day in Portugal as I'm typing this before taking the flight back to the UK. I've spent a week in Costa da Caparica, also known for its surfing due to the rough tides. Costa da Caparica is also known for the Rua dos Pescadores (Fisherman's Street), which is riddled with restaurants left and right. Warning! If you are shopping for meat in the bug super markets, DO NOT buy the PREPARADO mince meat. This is mixture of minxe with flower, coen flower, and all sorts of rubbish. Always read the ingredients! Either go to a local butcher or a butcher inside the big supermarket. You should also not have a problem finding a Brazilian Style Picanha (Rump Steak) Rodizio (All you can eat) Restaurant if you are on a tourist area.
I moved to Portugal about a year 1/2 ago from Kentucky. I live about an hour away from Ericeira. I started Carnivore 5 weeks ago and document my journey on my channel. I was so surprised when I saw this video because I hardly ever see any videos in Portugal. It's interesting to me how people here are so healthy considering how lots of restaurants will offer rice and fries with their meat dishes.. 2 starches, before I went Carnivore that bothered me so much, but now I just cook at home
Thats what i do here since every single person i meet in Portugal eats carbs, starches, pastel de nata, bread, pasta, rice... I only eat meat the whole day and my health got better, no more gas, bloathing or sore nose, i sleep better, no anxiety or depression and the cravings disappeared. Meat is quite cheap here so i can mix chicken, pork, cow meat and eggs and it tastes so delicious, i eat the same thing almost every day and i am so happy with it, nothing to complain about. I started carnivore 6 months ago and i feel blessed.
That's amazing. I was in Lisbon a week ago. Also, went to Porto, Coimbra and Algarve region (few towns there, such as Lagos, Albufeira and Faro). Porto was by far collest (literally). When in Lisbon, temperatures were hovering in mid to upper thirties Celsius (around 93ºF) . One day was 39ºC (102ºF). However, it was dry warmth, therefore easily bearable. Food, especially fish, is good but, restaurants aiming at tourists suck. Frequentkly, the food is frozen and waiting to be thawed and served or thawed, coocked and served. Fish was chewy and unapetizing. Of course, my budget did not allow for picking most expensive restaurants requiring reservatuions well ahead of time. I ended up buying my own food in groceries (mainly cured meat and smoked fish).
American living in Portugal here- get out of the big chain grocery store (Intermache) and find the closest village talho/butcher. All natural, grassfed meats, lots of lamb.
Portugal just has everything you could possibly want in a destination…safety, friendly people, delicious food, superb views, laid back lifestyle. It is my happy place 🇵🇹 💕
I love my country more than I should, lived in Ericeira for solid 13 years and in Lisbon other 15 years but saying now a days that Portugal is a safety country is a lie just for the score board and to sell a good image of what our country used to be that is not anymore... believe it if you want.
Portuguese here! follow you for many years. We still keep a lot of old tradition to buy in local farmers and to eat fresh fish. Really a lot of local butchers. Meat is high quality! Hope you enjoying my country. In small towns and the more you go to interior the cheaper food gets. The closer you get to Lisbon, Porto and Algarve, the more expensive it gets.
I live in Ericeira lovely town, the small grocery market that you went "intermarche" it's the biggest we have for 30 miles 😂. Regarding prices of food, buying stuff that isn't basic food it's normally very expensive. Enjoy the beach but don't go into the water because it's too cold😅. We have a saying in Ericeira, " Ericeira is where the winter spends the summer" because the weather is normally much worse that in the rest of the country. Enjoy Portugal!
I’m Romanian but I’ve been living in Portugal for 20 years, I love it here mostly because of the ocean and food. It would be awesome if you visited Transilvania too one day, specially Maramures.
If you like food, good food, you need to leave Lisbon. Visit Porto, Trás-os-Montes, Viseo, etc as in the northern part of the country... Have a go at the national food like Cosido á Portuguesa, Feijoada, Dobrada and so on. I'm in Lisbon, was born here and live here but I love the north, it feels you are going into a different country so, I suggest you try it too 😉

Yes, our language sounds very different from Spanish indeed. And yes, we love our dried salted codfish, one of our most famous foods. I'm glad you're enjoying the stay!
I thought i might have been hearing russian one time but it turned out to be portuguese. That was probably a glitch in my brain or is there any reason you could think of for the confusion?
@@carlwatts1230 Your're not hearing things, it happens a lot! i've also had the same experience but the other way around: i think someone is speaking in Portuguese, but i only realise it's Russian as soon as i get close enough!
@@jackportugge5647 Interesting. Thanks for the reply. I've now watched a video from the channel Langfocus which analyzes similarities that may be responsible for the frequent confusion. Good to know it wasn't a total fluke failure in my pattern recognition. There do appear to be some similarities though some people say the languages do not sound similar to them. I don't speak either one. After watching the video by the channel I mentioned I think it's probably the sibilants (a word I didn't know until watching the video) that are mainly responsible but there are other similarities which the video goes into. Cheers
@@carlwatts1230 No problem, as you must know, both languages are very different, but there are a lot of similar sounds, and furthermore, we tend to cut off the vowels, specially in the south, you see written Portuguese with vowels but when we sepak we tend to cut half of them! I've done a little investigation on Russian, its grammar is as complicated as it can be, there's much less vowels and the alphabet doeasn't help, but i think i don't have much difficulty with the pronounciation. We have some words that sound the same but mean different things, but this happens with almost every language!
And Portuguese people are very friendly. I traveled there twice. A month and a half each time. First time the Northern half and second time the Southern one. I had a great time. Made even easier since I speak Portuguese. I spent a few days in Ericeira, surfing a lot.
Thanks Dr. Baker. A carnivore in his travels is of immense interest to me. Lots of health videos, lots of travel videos, but it's rare to combine the two or find info on carnivore food availability around the world. As you're probably aware, most travelers are just wandering around eating the local 'food' as entertainment and a major reason for being there, without any knowledge or care about whether it's healthy.
Portugal has also had its fair share of problems in the last 50 years. Drugs was a major issue among the young, starting around the time of the Portuguese Colonial War & “Carnation Revolution” in the early 1970s. The country has since done some very positive, progressive things to deal with this issue.

We also just got back from Portugal, and my impressions are a bit different. I struggled to find beef and ate way more pork than usual. My daughter isn't keto or carnivore, but she abstains from seed oils, and they were in everything just like here. I basically ate pork charcuterie and cheeses because the yogurts were full of sugar; struggled to find plain yogurt at Continente, Aldi, Lidl, and smaller stores. Lots of pastries everywhere, indulged in one just to taste it, at restaurants there wasn't enough food in one meal because the meat was always between sandwich bread like bifanas and francesinhas. I would have charcuterie with me to supplement the restaurant food, or I would have had to buy two meals to get enough meat and eggs. We preferred buffets so I could eat enough meat and pass on all the breads. While I didn't see more than a few morbidly obese people, the general population fitness seemed on par with what I see here in Utah. I lived in Eastern Europe many years ago in Czechia, and found the food culture similar (and yes, the way Portuguese pronounce most s's as a sh or zh does sound very Slavic!) There is some evidence showing that moderate exercise such as all the walking we do when in Europe can result in a decrease in appetite, and we definitely experienced that. We ate a lot less than normal because we weren't at home with a kitchen, but overall as a carnivore plus berries person, it was somewhat of a struggle to find beef and stay on plan at restaurants and even grocery stores. If I lived there with my own kitchen, I would be able to figure it out other than the lack of beef, some of the smaller stores and many restaurants had only had pork and turkey. We had a great time, but being carnivore there was more difficult than at home.
Hi Dr Baker, having just been in Haarlem in the Netherlands, where I used to live, I was surprised to see in the grocery stores how much they are pushing a plant based diet. The plant based meat section is now huge whereas the red meat section is very tiny compared to years ago. Even in the butchers they are selling mainly chicken all with no skin on, it’s almost impossible in Holland to find chicken with skin on or red meat with any fat on it . The best place we found to eat in Amsterdam was an Argentine Steak House close to Central Station - enjoy your time in Europe.
Yes Portuguese food is very good and healthy. I should know because I am Portuguese, even dough I don't live in Portugal, but at home I always cook Portuguese dishes. 😊

Obesity and hight weight was almost inexistent about 8 to 10 years ago here in Portugal. It became much higher in numbers since pandemic and inflation. Allow me to contradict you but autism has always been there just wasn't diagnosed and autistics were thought to be retarded..just like many years ago dislexic children were mistakenly thought not to be bright or intelligent. If people has money to attend to expensive events such as football matches, concerts, buy top of the line car with heavy monthly payments instead of a more affordable one... Surely money would be enough to buy some fish and experience a healthier style of life if going walking outdoors instead of sticking to the sofa in front of the giant screen TV... It's all about prioritizing.
I very much disagree, we know about obesity for decades, autism is also known for decades maybe diagnosis procedures have improved in recent decades just like it happened with a lot of diseases, about money it became tighter after the pandemic just like it happened in a lot of countries still people can buy it meat you need to eat pork that stayed about the same price, chicken double to the price of pork and red meat is more expensive sometimes you can find it cheaper, fish is more popular with older people in my anecdotal evidence and was always expensive but increase quite a bit, I think most didn’t cut them out of their diet but reduce quantities instead, unfortunately the market dictates the prices and a lot of people still have the money to pay for it, just like it happened to our beloved olive oil.
@@santostv. We have known about obesity and autism for long time, i agree with you. But knowing about it and having it is different. Eating habits in Southern Europe have been changing for the worse in recent decades, with greater prosperity, especially when it comes to meat consumption. Meat used to be the preserve of the rich or for special occasions. Ultra-processed foods and junk food are also consumed much more, especially among young people. Nevertheless, many traditions and healthy habits are still maintained.

Do not buy meat or fish at Intermarché, there is a high probability of getting sick, each Intermarché has a different owner, it is not like Pingo Doce or Continente which are corporations Intermarché's do everything to make a little profit because they have to pay the franchises and the supermarket's general expenses, so if they have to sell meat that has been poorly handled or poorly packaged Or if it has been out of the refrigerators they will sell it anyway, with fish it is even worse even if the fish is spoiled they put it on sale and if they can't sell it they use it for takeaway. Give priority to street butchers and as for fish, especially in Ericeira, go to the municipal market or street fishmongers. If you don't know how to recognize whether a fish is fresh, they will teach you how to see.

Greetings from Estoril...Orginally from Texas...Been a legal resident here since 2016...I have traveled and lived all over the country...The quality of food here is on another level...Every region has it's speciality...Some of my favorite Beef is from the North...Carne Barrosã...Think Texas Longhorns, but Portuguese breed...Also Carne Arouquesa is excellent...Carne dos Açores and Carne Mirandesa round out my other favorites...Did I mention the other white meat? Porco Preto Alentejano...Carne de cabrito...I could on, but I think you get the picture...Another fun fact...I can walk to my Talho (Butcher) and get it all...Trying doing that in Texas...Enjoy you're time in a country that has it all...Beaches, Lakes, Islands, Mountains and Rivers in a small package! Given what we earn here, in Spain and Portugal, it's not cheaper. Inflation is crippling us too on foodstuffs. Plus we live in fear of electricity bills.

Dr Baker you are in my town. Thanks for the words!

Best steak in the world in Galicia…and it IS! Bodega El Capricho. Go there. Reservation required. It’s in a small town.
You should go to restaurants where the locals eat...
Dr. Shawn Baker you really need to visit Argentina the mecca for carnivore diet! Low cost, tasty meats too!
American living in Portugal here- get out of the big chain grocery store (Intermache) and find the closest village talho/butcher. All natural, grassfed meats, lots of lamb.

Price is probably double in a tourist town on beef same thing in Brazil I noticed. Once in a major city it was 1/2 as expensive at least
I had the best piece of roast pork in my life from the local grocery stores, and it cost me $3, unbelievable place to visit.
I lived in Eastern Europe many years ago in Czechia, and found the food culture similar (and yes, the way Portuguese pronounce most s's as a sh or zh does sound very Slavic!)
There is some evidence showing that moderate exercise such as all the walking we do when in Europe can result in a decrease in appetite, and we definitely experienced that.
What? I live here and buy plain yoghurt all the time
Will be on a cruise next month starting in Barcelona and heading to Lisbon..Im so looking forward to seafood...
Cool. Hope you enjoy your trip. One thing i notice is that many people walk everywhere.
Everthing is so good when we on vacation.

Intermarché is one of the most expensive super makets in the country. Did you get tired of being served rice and fried potatoes? First thing I learned to say was, "So com salada" so I can get only salad with my meat instead of the rice/potatoes, and "Não como pão," I don't eat bread. LOL.... I've been a SBaker follower for at least 5 years, and I now have been in Portugal for 28 months. Don't miss the US at all.
That 30 euros groceries will take me easy to 100 usd here in Dallas
High levels of smoking and vaping. Beer and obviously wine consumption also high. Health service was extremely good but due to lack of investment is now failing in different areas of the country. Doctors, nurses and other medical staff strike regularly due to working conditions and very low pay. Passing tourists may not see the real situation.
"Health service was extremely good but due to lack of investment is now failing in different areas of the country." - health service is still great if you have the money to pay for a insurance (which is much cheaper than in the US). Most expats do have that money, while most Portuguese people earning Portuguese wages don't.
@@diogorodrigues747 from personal experience it is below average. Long waiting times and chaotic. Website not working correctly to book appointments and lack of nursing supplies for patients.
When are you in Amsterdam, Shawn?
How easy is it to get unaged red meat?
Good price for the tomahawk 🥳
Will you go to Fatima?
