I lived in France for a while - it's amazing how the US and the UK have a different focus. I ate many wonderful meals made in the most basic of kitchens in France (some people don't even have a fridge in their homes) yet the focus when I moved back to the UK was all about installing a fancy kitchen costing many thousands of £s yet the food prepared in them is not as good and more processed. In Spain, the kitchens are tiny because all the focus is on eating out. What I love about France and to an extent Spain, is the markets and the produce - some wonderful fish shops and butchers.
I have a friend that is my age close to 60. He came down with a autoimmune disorder in the early nineties and his diet became super restrictive. He is so underweight for most of his life because of it. One slice of American bread could send him to the doctor for help. He started traveling to Europe about 5 years ago and found out he can eat literally anything there. Even the bread is fine. He told me he eats bread with every meal there! 😅 He knows when he gets home many foods are off his menu. He gains probably 6 lbs every time he travels to Europe.
Interesting Dr Baker. I would be curious to know if you noticed the changing culture in Europe, especially France with the invading hordes from Middle East countries. They have a totally different culture and refuse to integrate with any host country.
And by host countries are meant I guess countries which supported every possible destruction of the same middle east region, and then offcourse, when symptoms(migrants) are there, people, who are totally ignorant to what they governments are doing, recognize, ah there are too many migrants here, smart as always 🤦🏻
The region around Roubaix is in some parts basically northern Africa. But, these people have been there a couple generations. Not a recent thing in that area.
I've been living in France for 7 years now, from Texas originally. Yes, meat is cheaper and steaks are better in Texas, but everything else is healthier for you in France. When my family visits us, they are amazed about how thin people are and asked me if I "work out" because I look so thin at 45 years old. American restaurants can make food taste pretty good, but I can actually eat anything in France without having some weird side effects, like eating just bread. I'll take better bread, charcuterie, cheese, milk and veggies over having steak with more fat content any day. BTW, In France, there is a type of meat called Charolais, which I had a taste of at the Agricultural Exposition in Paris. It was every bit as good as the best steak I've had in Texas. It's just that the majority of steaks you find in the supermarket have a really low fat content or are a cheaper cut.
Dr. Baker coming to Slovakia in september ❤️ i hope you say only good things about my country after the visit :) just keep in mind, that Bratislava -the main city- is not representative of the whole country. We have much more rich culture, than it can seem like from bratislava.
I understand your standpoint, tbh, I trully believe that if you have money, living in europe is far better, but that's the catch, you have to have it, and there's a lot of barriers getting out of the "conformity class", I've always wanted to build a business, but I've always been put off by the ammount of upfront legalese I have to do and the upfront costs (taxes) I have to take on without even having a single customer. So much so that I'm convinced that if I ever setup a business it will be have to be incorporated in a different country, like Estonia or the US (Delaware).
Problem is that is very hard to make that money Europe. Make more and they tax a lot more. Also single market is like joke because all the languages and add the regulation on top.
The thickness of the steaks in UK supermarkets is a total disappointment to me. Occasionally Lidl’s do a thicker cut and I stock up on them when they do. The thick ones at the butchers are very expensive. I visited California a few years back and found everything Big and spread out....I guess it’s just what you get used to.
@@KK-lg8uz or get in personal contact with a local farmer and pay with cash - also strengthens social skills and cash economy (the older I get the more I hate purchasing stuff online)
I noticed some thick cut steaks in Sainsbury's last week. It was a surprise as I don't recall ever seeing them in any supermarket before. Not for me though, as I'd find them to be too much for one meal 375g as opposed to the usual 225g)
Some supermarkets (I am in UK) have a butcher's section where you can ask them to cut your steak to your liking. Morrison's have fresh meat which I like as the aged meat give me tummy ache.
Dr Baker, nice recap! How did you like driving in Europe with all the Speed Controls? Americans enjoy so much more freedom than Europeans. Europe is turning into a Chinese style Big Brother society very rapidly. Most American don't realize how good they have it. Starting a business in Europe is tough with all the bureaucracy involved. Butchers and Bakers are disappearing at a rapid rate due to endless amounts of paper work required for running a business and the social system has made the population lazy and dependent on government handouts, making it very hard to find staff. And I agree, beef is much better in the US. American cuts are getting more popular, I see more and more thicker cuts in Belgian Butchers shops, but those are much more expensive than in the US and Grass Fed and Grass finished beef is nearly impossible to find. I paid 130 Euros for 2, 1.5" thick Ribeye's when I was visiting my family last month and not many people can afford that. Safe travels!
And often they charge a premium per kg if you do find a thicker cut for some unknown reason! Probably because they know it's not obtainable in thicker cuts.
I get bigger cuts (which is also cheaper where I live) and cut my steaks from that. Always fun when I invite friends and see their reactions when they are not used to that thick steak cuts.
@@jim0_oI know in the U.S. the Cattle is about twice the size of those in UK and Europe due to being pumped full of steroids to increase their size muscle mass and yield from each cow. Also the Chickens in U.S. are 2-3 times the size of those in U.K. and even in U.K. they're twice the size they used to be 50years ago, so God knows what they pump into them in the U.S. I know much of whats in thw U.S. food is banned in rest of the world due to being hazardous, so I think even though our food is a lot dearer and don't get as much, it's definitely not as unhealthy, which is probably the reason there's so much more bad health in the U.S. and probably why most Americans who come to either UK or Europe tend to lose weight, get healthy and get rid of health conditions without even actively changing anything, just because eating better quality food.. that for me is the most worrying thing about U.S. foodchain.
Europe does not have steak culture. Steaks are of the low quality and quite expensive. But other food is quite tasty. With regards to the way people eat, Europe does not have hustle approach to the life. There is time to cook, eat and spend time with people eating. Also Europe is quite diverse. There is English, French, Italian, German, Balkan kitchen. Please, share your impressions of Slovakia. East is quite different from the West of the continent.
We like to visit south of france, in particular cote d'azur/alpes maritimes imo the most beautiful part of france. And italy is right next door like 20 minutes drive so you have best of both worlds.
Meat is becoming increasingly expensive in Europe, due to the push to eat less off it (bc climate). I agree the meat is definitely tougher to chew, and hard to get right on a grill, bc it overcooks so quickly. Carnivore is near impossible to afford.
Unfortunately, the truth is that the American dream is dead and waiting to be cremated. Young people have hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt and have a hard time making a livable wage. Buying their own home is an impossibility, and many have to move back home, and/or live with roommates. That's the reality in the United States today. And, with our 35 trillion dollar national debt and climbing, it's not going to get any better.
This is exactly the situation in the UK. Corporate greed and uncontrolled immigration has destroyed this country. Not forgetting the contribution of the corrupt politicians.

As cities are expanding your only chance to buy a home (if thats possible - see australian housing situation) is moving further out which means more driving, more fuel chewing up your income. So what if we get paid more if it goes on more cars, more driving. I bike for 3/4 of the year to work and use public transport for the rest these days. My wife and I don't own a car and just justify any uber ride anywhere as a result. Theres always trade offs. When you compare the middle class of America vs Europe, Americans may make more money on average but we have to pay way more in health insurance and food that’s healthy or normal by European standards.
Lol.... Like European countries are all the same 😂 Eastern and Western Europe are VERY different. Why do you think that is... Lol.... Do we look alike... NO
Nonsense, the average America has WAY more disposable income than people in Europe, and NO we don't spend it all on healthcare and you can buy all the healthy food you wish in the US.

Having said that, the weather could be better!
Shawn Baker works for himself and can take leave whenever he wants! When he earns 10 times more, the free bus ride is loose change. This communist mentality of freebies robs the society since it is paid through high taxes and inflation.
USA is a third world country when you look at the poverty rate. I sucks when so many people are suffering. I would rather prefer to live in country with some economic equality.
Definitely - gotta check out the local butchers ! That makes all the difference in the Netherlands, to begin with. There you will find all sorts of thick cuts, also custom-sliced (or diced) if that's your preference. Also, ethnic areas are also something to explore when searching for options. Often around market areas (where everybody else is busy buying fruit and veggies) it's a colourful way to experience the culture and find better ops from local farmers, too.

Next time in Europe try to buy your food straight form the farm. 6'5 in European cars is usually ok in the driver seat (you don't want a sunroof), but the back seat is a no no. There used to be more difference between countries in western Europe, but politically they are moving towards more uniformity.
Surprised that you did not mention health care! One of the things I highly appreciate in The Netherlands is that on a low income I have (making around €1800 a month) I only pay €23 a month for excellent health care! GP is free of charge. For specialists you need to pay €385 yearly out of pocket. I am shocked that a country like US has such a terrible health care system. But true thing you said about opportunities being more difficult here. Our government is NOT working for the people. They are over- regulating everything and make it as difficult as possible for small business owners like myself to get ahead.. But I am still very grateful to live my senior years here in Amsterdam. Local rancher at biking distance with great quality beef for a decent price. And the animals have a good life (very important for me).
Dont go to healthcare because they dont care, all they care about is money. The sicker you get the better it is for them. I will try to end my insurance end of this year, because it is a scam. Yes i am from the netherlands. You need to take care for yourselves, and think about what we eat.
At 65 you'd be on Medicare, which is low cost. For your salary you'd probably be eligible for state provided Medicaid until you're 65. That's free....By the time you calculate the higher salaries and lower taxes in America, the health insurance costs are still worth it here.

Do you Yanks really think the USA is it? Life isn't always about money, fortunately, the Europeans believe that health is wealth and that life is lived to its fullest. The USA is actually a 3rd world country from where I sit, it has the most archaic health system on the planet and if for some reason the average person doesn't die from obesity or drug overdose, they will possibly be shot by a random school kid who is not old enough to smoke or vote, but can own or carry a gun! Throughout Europe you have to look hard to find a Maccas or KFC etc, everyone eats local fresh produce generally, there are fresh food markets everywhere and protein is abundant and as thick as you ask for it. (obviously not as thick as some!). Really the only obese people I meet in Europe are American tourists who bitch about walking and compare everything to the USA. (Stay home) If you travel, embrace the culture you're visiting, and don't compare because if everywhere was like the US the suicide rate would be catastrophic. I am a fan of the Carnivore lifestyle and grew up with a father who was a butcher so this way of eating comes naturally to me and makes all the sense in the world, and I also appreciate all the proactive voices promoting carnivore and a healthy alternative but please don't get on youtube and talk bullshit, Europeans live on average a hell of a lot longer than Americans do, just saying! That's my rant over. PS, apart from this vid, I do enjoy your posts Shawn, keep them coming. 🤔😎.
There are lots of healthy people in the USA. Just because Mcdonalds and KFC exist, doesn't mean you have to eat there. The big difference is personal freedom. In Europe, the government limits your choices, taxes you excessively, and caps your potential. No thanks!

Every time I vacation, when I can, not recently, but when I could, I would lose weight. I lost 14lbs on a 5 week stint in Asia once.
Our American food is killing us. I eat mostly meat and stay away from ultra processed foods. Although I have a hard time turning down ice cream.😬 🍦🍨

I avoid Lidl, since where I live, they once announced that they want to reduce their meat offerings - because of climate s**t.

If you paid that much for a steak, you only have yourself to blame.
As a european, I agree on the thickness of steaks, I really hate the 1-1.5cm cuts. You can find thicker ones but they are sometimes hard to find.
I get them from my butcher. Handcut 😅
In Italy
And often they charge a premium per kg if you do find a thicker cut for some unknown reason! Probably because they know it's not obtainable in thicker cuts.
This is what I'm used to so the US Hanna-Barbera sized stakes (in Florida 15+ years ago) made me question what went into their creation.
