love that, thanks for sharing the great insight, I believe some prompts will help those who are going to start the journey; Sometimes it's hard to know what to write about, especially if you're new to journaling. For the most part, you'll be the only one who reads your journal, so you can write whatever you want. If you need some ideas for what to write about, though, try one of these prompts. 1. List three things you'd like to tell a friend, family member or partner right now. 2. Write three things you love about yourself. 3. What are you grateful for at this moment? 4. What is your favorite childhood memory? 5. Who do you trust the most and why? 6. What motivates you? 7. What is a negative childhood memory that you've been holding onto and how can you work through it? 8. What is one of your biggest regrets and what can you learn from it? 9. What has been one of your biggest accomplishments in your career? 10. What are some of your biggest fears and why? 11. What is your top goal for this year? What about for the next five years? 12. How are you feeling right now? 13. Write three positive things you want to remember if you're having a bad day. 14. How would you describe yourself to someone? 15. What brings you stress and how can you alleviate it?
This is game changer. I hate relying on third party apps with my private information. Hence, I wasn't simply journaling at all. Now this makes me start journaling.
Thank you for this video. I’ve always wanted to use the journal app but never quite “got it” because of Apple’s lack of describing it’s real-world functionality - your video did just what Apple didn’t do; present relatable scenarios. Bravo Zulu !!
Re: typing on Apple Journal - I read a good tip that if you have a Bluetooth keyboard, that can help ease the burden of typing on your iPhone. But I agree, hopefully they'll release an iPad/Mac version. :)
One thing to keep in mind is that afaik it doesn’t actually link to a photo from your library but copies it into the journaling app. Meaning you are actually using up more storage doing so.
Looks really interesting. I've been journaling for a few years and find it to be a very healthy habit. I look forward to seeing more people get into it with this app. Great video Peter.
I journal using DayOne twice a day and love how I can create my own headings in journal templates. Like you I use my iPad and Mac. Right now I’d say the Apple app isn’t for me, however that decision is always open to change as the app develops.
I've been using Day One for about 10 years now. I was eagerly waiting for Journal to be released. When it was and I tried it, I was suitably unimpressed. No cross-device sync, entries are day based, no option to sort by time of day, one big long list of entries, so no calendar view, etc.. Overall concept seems to be OK, certainly different to what I'm used to. Thanks for the review.
@@josephpepe2607 I don't have an iPhone that's why I asked - if he's doing a review on an app, might as well compare to the relatively popular option in the market.
I'm finding it's not curating a lot of suggestions. It's not capturing locations I've been to and when it does I sometimes don't get it until the next day.
Sadly suggestions are too late so they are almost worthless :-( Even if I have done workout at day time it doesn't show it at evening but later at night it shows it.
Apart from search, it also needs an "On this Day" feature to remind you of what you've done years from now, along with some export options. Apple has locked in enough of my data!
Great Video Peter. I’ll be updating to the newest IOS tonight. I’ve used the DayOne app for about 3 years. Does apple’s app allow for the importation of past journal entries from my Day one app?
Almost all apps are subscription now, I moved all my data out of third party apps and use apple notes. The same with word processors and spread sheets. I’m getting rid of apps that charge a weekly or monthly fees. If I paid for all the apps I’ve used in the past I’d be paying over a hundred dollars a month.
I don’t think this will really happen or take off until the Journal app appears on the iPad & the iMac. I do all my journaling in Apple Notes which, because of iCloud services, appears on my iMac, iPhone and iPad. Currently, the Journal app is limited to my slow one finger typing on the iPhone.
I won’t be using it alongside Day One. Like I said in the conclusion, I’ll stick with Day One for now, but I’ll keep an eye on Journal’s developments. And Journal could be great for many people.
Does the Journal app combine all your journaling into a summary of what's going on in your life, analyze it, and give you advice on how you can improve? How does the app help you once you've entered in enough journals? What is the end result from journaling? Right now, it seems like a personal kind of Instagram-Twitter(X) hybrid instead of something I could benefit from. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that's how it seems at the moment.
How old are you?? Why are you comparing Journaling to a "personal Instagram-Twitter"? Journaling has been around since humans can write and has many mental health benefits.
@@bubbles1978 My comment probably wasn't clear. I was referring to the app, not journaling itself. In the video, it seems like all he's doing is uploading photos (like in Instagram) and writing about his events (like in Twitter(X)), to be viewed only by himself instead of the outside world. I know that journaling can be very helpful, but I was wondering if the app did something extra like analyze all the journals and give feedback if the user's life needed improvement, or if a person's journals reveal a trend in depression, then the app could tell the user where they could seek help. I wanted to know if the app monitored the journals with AI or just simply stored them.
@@vidformreasonable clarification. Apple Journal free and reliable, but don’t has even searching option and previous days reviewing. So now it’s looks like you only write and store information without any interaction and when you decided to review your old days, thoughts (and you have more than 100 records) you wouldn’t able to do this. Agree that main reason to keep journal is ability to review, analyze, sort and categorize your old thoughts
I’m glad this is free. Day One used to be so good until they converted to a subscription model!

I loved this native Journal app, I hope they launch on Mac too

Thanks for making this all clear and easy to understand and apply.
Are they going to bring this to the Mac where I can actually type at length?
I also use DayOne and have for a while. I'll be watching to see how this journaling app evolves. Thanks for telling us about it!
Day one sucks because they use any decent features you have to pay for it
How do you move your journal to another device? What if you buy a new phone?
One thing to keep in mind is that afaik it doesn’t actually link to a photo from your library but copies it into the journaling app. Meaning you are actually using up more storage doing so.
Thanks that was my final straw
will it have mac app?
Thanks for the overview. How optimistic are you future updates will include archival and exporting options and features?
I have no way to know

Will we have a desktop version? Printable exports?
Who knows, ask Apple!
Peter, How do you activate the “Suggestions” to work in Day One?
Once you update the app, when you start a new entry (on iPhone only) there is a Suggestions button.
@@PeterAkkies Thanks, Peter. Much obliged.
I dont know why my input text is always on Bold. I change to smaller letter and it goes back bold. I hate that

How does it compare to Day One?
All the features are free that’s how it compares
I mean if you already have an iPhone why don’t you just try it and you’ll see how it compares

only one problem it's phone only I loth trying to type on the phone then they add to the mac i may use it
What is the difference between Notes and Journals ?
There’s a huge difference and why would you want to journal in your notes😂

It’s a great start but way too simple, oh and don’t forget. If you delete an entrie there is no way to get it back. So be cautious.

On a Mac, a strong maybe. On an iPhone without dictation entry for text available, not for me.
So you’re Dutch ?
Yes I am
I delete it cause it is not available in Macos and ipados . I use Notes for journaling and it is good for me.
No search possible and no calendar search. So for me useless.
Deleted it not my thing. If a person is inclined to journal things then this is great I suppose.
No search, no share? Quite useless app for me. (for the moment)
Yeah I hope they'll add those features sooner rather than later.
no it don’t have any moods on there so that’s a no for me
No, because an iphone 15 pro max has a measly 8gb of ram and no smart stylus. thus, you couldn't give one to me.
