I’ve been using Day One for years, at least once a day. The sheer amount of content I’ve posted in there is a little bonkers. I have multiple journals for nostalgic parenting moments, holidays, favourite films, and even a specific one to track burgers. Their template feature is so well executed.
Day One for me. I just need the calendar and search function. I’m a very basic user. I use journal to record all my daily happenings for life and work. I have multiple side consultant gigs and I keep everything in journal and search for things all the time. I don’t use any of the other stuff.
Thank you so much for this fantastic comparison video (and for mentioning my original comment), and for showing some features of Day One that I haven’t explored yet ! I’m sure the Apple Journal app will develop over time, so I will be monitoring that closely but, since I’ve been using Day One consistently for over 3 years, will stick with that for the time being. I really enjoy your style of videos - so much amazing content to catch up on, and look forward to lots more in the future. Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful and relaxing Christmas break.
I love Day One have been using it for years. And I am loving the look of the new Apple Journal. I think what I always keep in mind is the day one cloud where all your journals are stored is apple security better ? But I am loving the look and feel of Apple Journal and the simplicity 😊
Day One has been a go-to for many, and it's exciting to see Apple Journal entering the scene. When it comes to security, Apple's ecosystem is renowned for its strong privacy and security features, so you're in good hands. It's always wise to compare privacy policies and security features to see what suits you best. The design and simplicity of Apple Journal are definitely attractive. It's about finding the tool that fits your needs and security preferences perfectly!
Great video. Well done and thanks for posting. I started digital journalling a very long time ago with Momento but moved over to DayOne because the UI was better and features were richer. I want to start using the Apple Journal app but DayOne is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of features and functionality. From something as simple as being able to change the font on your entries to make it easier and more enjoyable to write, to the fact that there’s a Mac version, an iPad version and online version, which make it even easier to write and gives you more choice. The widget prompts, ‘on this day’ and customisation options are a few of the many reasons I won’t be moving over to Apple just yet and will continue to pay for the premium features in DayOne - I feel like they have lots of catching up to do in order to be a really strong competitor to DayOne but I’m sure that will happen knowing Apple. Thanks again 👍🏽
Wow that book feature is quite impressive, Didn’t expect that. I wonder if Apple will open exporting in the Journal app? I’m coming from the stoic app but looking for a new place to start
Thanks for your comment. Haven’t come across the Stoic app. Exporting would be desired though I’m not convinced Apple would want to implement that … hopefully I’m wrong and being too cynical!
DayOne has three features that keep me on it, but only one of those really matters: it’s available on macOS. I do my journaling primarily from my Mac with a keyboard. Apple hasn’t ported Journal to macOS yet, so that’s a showstopper. DayOne also supports Markdown, and is run by Automattic, the company behind WordPress-proponents of open source tech. Maybe Apple will release macOS and iPad versions of Journal in the future, but DayOne is so good, I don’t see any reason to change (other than saving $35/year)
I think I will stick to using day one. I like that it has more than just a phone app. Though I’m sure Apple will work on that end. Also the robust features are nice. I particularly like the prompt features. EDIT: also I was doing some looking at the features and one of them was a location tracker (see where you were though out your day) pretty cool but also potential privacy issue. So I did some research they seem to really take privacy seriously at day one so while I would trust them with my data as much if not more then Apple.
I wonder why in the Apple Journal App there is no search function, no #tags, not on iPad - I wonder if Apple are waiting for the A.I. or Machine Learning (M.L.) component of iOS18 to offer a major upgrade? I think the Journal could benefit from A.I. or M.L.
I use Day One and I have been using it for a few years. Now that Apple has released the Journal app for iPhone. I honestly think it is perfect for me. I love everything about it. As time goes on it will become more advanced. I’m sure of it ❤
The Apple Journal isn’t, as of yet, available outside of iOS. I believe Day One IS available on the Mac and iPad if you pay for the yearly premium package. Do you already use a desktop based journaling solution?
Apple - free video editing software iMovie, free Excel equivalent numbers, free word document equivalent pages, free password manager key chain, free and private messaging (text, audio , video), free air tag for tracking, free journal no crappy subscriptions, free note taking app and more I probably forgot. I think I will stick with apple ecosystem and I'm glad I'm here.
There are some amazing advantages to be immersed in the Apple eco-system! However, I use LumaFusion for video editing, 1Password for online security, Fanastical 2 for calendar, Spark for email, and at the moment I think Day One does a better job for journaling. So there must be something worth paying for in these third-party apps that I’m simply not getting from Apple.
I will stick with Day One. I already have +2,200 entries on it and I don't want to get even deeper into the Apple Ecosystem. The Day One version of Android is still not as good as iOS but ever since Automattic acquired the app they have been working to get the Android version better than ever.
That’s a solid commitment to Day One with over 2,200 entries - impressive! Sticking with what works for you is always a smart move, especially when you’ve invested so much into it. It’s interesting to hear that Automattic’s acquisition is steering improvements for the Android version. Do you think these updates will eventually make the Android experience on par with iOS, or is there a specific feature you’re waiting for to see improvement?
@@mark_kelly I actually just started using the app. I started a few days ago with the Apple Journal app....but, I think I'm switching to Day. Seems like a better free app. that being said, I really like the Gratitude templates, and others like that.
@@mark_kelly I'm sorry for the late reply.... I actually came back to this video, b/c I'm trying to figure out if I want to commit to Day One, or go with Everlog. The template I use the most, currently, is probably the Daily Gratitude.
Personally, the phone just isn't the place for me to feel inspired to write. Sending a quick text, or searching for something online is the extent of what I'll type there. For long format content like journaling, I need a larger screen and a keyboard. Until Journal comes to MacOS, I have absolutely no interest in it.
That’s a valid point! Why spend money on cosmetic changes like app icons when simplicity and functionality are key? Journal does have a certain elegant simplicity to it. Speaking of which, what’s your favourite feature in Journal that you think sets it apart from other apps?

So do you understand how the Habit Tracker template works? I'd appreciate a hint!
This tracking burger thing is brilliant. I love it. 😻

I like to collect images from web, Day One is the best tool for me to keep them organized.

Day One’s templates are helpful. 😄
Though I only use the free version.
Love the templates 😄
I’ll keep using day one. Not only for the features but because I want to start to freeing myself for the Apple only ecosystem.
Love Day One! It is easy to get stuck in the eco-system isn’t it? I’m guilty as charged!
@@mark_kellyday 1 is also only for apple
You can get Day One on both Apple and Android - dayoneapp.com

I've been using diarium, who of you already bought 'day one'? Is it worth it?
Diarium looks great, I hadn’t heard of it until your comment.
@@mark_kelly yes it is I've been using it for 1 year, Do you think it's worth buying day one?
why is the journaling app for apple not available for iPad?
Great question. I’d love it on the iPad! I’d love to understand their reasoning why they don’t have an iPad version.
This video is basically an advert for Day One.
What can I say, I really like it! 😁
Can the optional voice recording "file" be exported?
I found this info - dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/audio-recording/
Hope that answers your query.
Apple has a long way to go before they can Sherlock "Day One". Day One is the Gold Standard.
Considering this video has been out for months, and DayOne is still going great, you’re probably right! 😁

The Apple Journal is fantastic
The Journal app only works on iPhone....

Day One fork on any platform where's apple apps work only within Apple ecosystem

can Apple Journal print ?
Unfortunately, no, you can’t print directly from Apple journal as far as I’m aware.
The templates make it really appealing over the Journal app.
