I wish I had seen this video last summer when I was going through expansion. It was very painful. I am now getting ready to have them replaced with implants (delayed because of Covid-19) next week. I will say that they are still very boulder-like, but much more comfortable at this point. I can even sleep on my side now. For everyone going through this, I wanted to tell you to power through because it does get easier. Stay well!

@@cecilyjackson24 Hi. So sorry you're still in pain. Have you tried Gabapentin? It's for nerve pain and it's not narcotic. They had me get expanded before my radiation. The skin really does get tight after radiation, so it's better to stretch it before. You might want to check with your radiologist. I got my implants last month and I'm doing fine. The most important thing is to be cancer free! Best wishes!

Thank you for writing this! I had a double mastectomy with reconstruction on 10/29. It's been almost 3 weeks and I am crying daily. These tissue expanders have got to be the worst part of this entire experience. I hurt any time I move. I watched other videos where the women are saying "it's still tight but it's not so bad". Every single day I wake up hoping that I'm going to get used to it but that day hasn't come. I only have air in my expanders right now! I go for a doctor visit this Wednesday and they will start adding saline to these expanders and I'm so scared that the pain is going to be even worse. I told my husband that if I knew what this was going to be like, and if I were older like in my 60's, I'd say forget it!

I thought i am the only one who is in pain. Everytime i go for my expansion,it hurts a lot. But this morning, its too much. I already prepare myself. I took oxycodone 30 mins. befofe the procedure. The left side who has the cancer is not painful at all.I had double mastectomy. They explain that they took more tissues compare to the right side. But,the right breast is excruciatingly painful. I cried after the procedure and i said wont go for refills anymore. If i only knew how painful it is,i wont even go for it. I know every individual is different. We have different threshold of pain. This is just my experience. I have been throwing up all day. I already told my doctor that i will not go through this pain anymore and no more refills. I am happy with the size of my breast now even if i wont complete the refills.

Ok. I just wonder how many cc’s were injected at each stage. Mine were 200 each side same day as surgery. First fill at 10 days out was of 100 ccs each side. Then 2 more weekly fill of 100 ccs each side. I was at 500cc each side at three and a half week out. It was intense. They expanders now stay in place for 2-3 months. I’m doing a lot of PT and massage to handle the pain. I’m a small woman and these girls are very tight often pinching on a nerve or two. I’m counting the days sisters. I’m 66 years old too. My energy level requires me to rest and restore. I am blessed to be able to do that now. Good luck to all of you !

Yes it hurts. Well more like extremely uncomfortable. At times I feel like I’m having a heart attack but it is just chest muscle spasms. I think that the women who experienced very little pain or discomfort received smaller expanders than the huge ones I received. I’m somewhat upset by the size expander that I received because I wasn’t given a choice nor was I asked what size I wanted. Now I am at a point where I don’t want anymore saline injections because these things are huge and still very oddly shaped. I will have triple d size or larger if I continue with the saline fills.

I had my mastectomy 7 weeks ago, have not been in pain at all. If anything it has been discomfort. I had no real feelings until maybe 2 weeks ago, when I started having sensatios coming back. Today, I had my first expansion since the surgery. It is more of a stretching feelling. I know there is definitely something there. I have been able to sleep on my sides again, which is so nice.

I am going through this process right now. Expanders were placed first week of September and so far I have 275 cc in each side. I wouldn’t really call them painful, but they are definitely uncomfortable. I am hyper aware of the fact that I have what feels like small bricks under part of my chest muscle. It's the weirdest feeling when I do something that involves my pecs and I can feel those things getting in the way under there. I really hope I am not going to regret going the implant route. Unfortunately, no one in my area does micro surgery reconstruction using your own tissue.

The incision of the flap is too large and may not grow well. The surgery time is at least 8 hours. Consider the risk,I choose the tissue expender. Even it's quite uncomfortable, I believe it will get better when down the road.

I had a preventative nipple sparing double mastectomy with over the muscle expanders July 20th. Im 6 weeks post op. The first couple of weeks are the hardest. The expanders felt like sandpaper rubbing underneath my skin every time I moved. Now I barely feel them at all. The expansion process didn’t hurt at all. One breast I could feel the tiniest prick when the needle went in but not like a shot. The other breast I couldn’t feel it at all. You do feel pressure immediately after the expansions, but that goes away in a couple hours. Tylenol and ibuprofen help with that.

My expanders gave me excruciating pain! It took a long time for them to stop hurting but you know there, there it is still annoying especially when you sleep and just constantly feel like I have something squeezing you. Not to mention something went wrong...I had my mastectomy w/ expanders surgery in December 2019 and am having the switch October 2020 it may or may not work and I'll need a different surgery. May even decide to go flat...😢

Okay so it was really difficult in the beginning to deal with the expanders feeling mostly like having a metal bra on. As you heal you get used to them but sometimes will notice a tightness more than other times. That’s annoying but normal. They r inside your muscles. If your having chemo they cannot be filled until that’s done.

It looks like I'm the only woman here who had tissue expanders placed for purely cosmetic reasons, as part of my male to female transition. I had a set of 800 cc expanders placed in March of 2020. It was painful because of the making of the pockets for them, but I had almost no pain afterward. Foolishly, I took the train home, a 450 mile trip where I had to use my arms (and pectoral muscles) when moving around, so I can't recommend this. But no damage done.
The first set became infected and had to be removed. The second set were 2000 cc expanders. This time I hired an infusion nurse to do weekly 100 cc infusions of saline, and I very reluctantly stopped adding saline at 2500 cc. It gets hard to measure at these sizes, but it's something like 56H. No pain ever. *But I wish I had gone for 4000 cc.* 🏀🏀

Do you not realize that almost every woman here is going through this for mastectomy reconstruction? These are women who are going through CANCER. Sheesh. Read the room. Nobody here wants to hear your story of your purely elective cosmetic surgery that you had to become a grotesquely freakish trans woman. Go take your massive breast fetish nonsense somewhere else. These are women recovering from CANCER. Duh.

One tissue expander is not bad. They are uncomfortable, especially right after surgery (mastectomy) for a few weeks and then every time you get them filled. The use a VERY small needle to fill and it takes less than 2 minutes. You don't feel the needle or fluid going in because you are numb from your mastectomy. The discomfort comes several hours after your fill. It's similar to your milk coming in as a new mom but not as much pain. It feels tight and full and does feel like a 'weight on your chest" but it is not painful. Discomfort is eased by Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen.

I had expanders placed July 26th. They don't really hurt. It's more like I'm wearing a tight bra. A little sore for a couple of days after fills but other than that I'm good! The more fills I've had the less discomfort when I go from laying down to standing.

My experience is after every fill, 3 so far, it is uncomfortable because of the tightness. And the 3rd fill I felt the needle when it was put into my "breast". After 2 days it's fine. Just ibuprofen for that day. My problem is because I'm a heavier gal that it feels like the "base" of the expander digs into the sides and bottom of my breast. But I think it's going to be worth the discomfort as opposed to staying flat. I only have a single mastectomy and just didn't want to go without a breast.

I am almost 2 weeks postop for bilateral mastectomy with expander placement. I have always been one to have a high pain tolerance. However, the discomfort has been horrible. Mostly around the expanders, under my arms and sides, and the backs of my arms. My pain is more of a burning sensation which i know that is likely nerve related. But i cannot stand anyrhing to touch my skin because of the discomfort. I'm very tender around the expanders as well. Hopefully as time goes on my symptoms will improve but for now, it's miserable.

Hand muscle spasms couldn't breathe couldn't sit couldn't stand nothing helped. the medicine that they gave me did not work I thought I was gonna OD on how much pain medicine I was trying to take just to get rid of this pain.. Couldn't sleep. It was time again for a second feel I did the same thing again 120C c's. But time I get home I was almost in tears. I'm pretty good with pain but this this was awful. The answer is: it DEPENDS! Definitely differs from person to person... AND within one person, can differ from one side to another! IME, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
Right side: zero complaints. If I had to live with this thing for years, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
Left side: ended up in the emergency department due to shortness of breath & extreme pain on the 7th day after mastectomy. I think at the academic hospital center where all my care was (top 7 NCI comprehensive cancer center), everything was taken care of perfectly. Left side chest pains after recent surgery almost always gets a CT to rule out pulmonary emboli (logical, highly appropriate; negative, yay). Left side likely had true nerve pain from mastectomy & edge of tissue expander aggravated it.... felt like noogies (knuckles) pressing into left side of sternum, unrelentingly.
Short of breath (slightly pressed into left lung), fearful that after ED: 1) PS may not manage my pain adequately & 2) resolution would involve more than 3 days of opiates which would risk dependence. Fortunately PS managed the following 1-2 weeks well & we came up with a great medication taper so there'd be minimal dependence risk (increased time b/t dose by 1h, until I reached 24h b/t doses or no longer felt I needed narcotic pain medication).
