I'm thinking this car is gonna end up with a 30cc Ryobi weed wacker engine.
I had a 1978 Vw polo with a 850cc engine and also a few early minis with 850cc they were 34hp and were fine in modern traffic, i'm sure with modern tech a small car should be workable with 300/500cc. They just make shit to complicated these days.
Or perhaps 4 of them - one for each wheel
@@krusher74you can get the fiat 500 with a 900cc engine! Don't know about the performance lol
With a turbo and 250psi boost.
I'm thinking it will get a visit from the fire department first. That fuel line splice likely will not hold.
"You can find similar cars for under a grand" *checks local pricing and cries.
You could get that 65hp mini-hybrid Mazda thats coming out!

yea a beat up high mileage one with no working hybrid system, under a grand sounds about right

Yeah, it literally was a "non-runner" when he got it. $1K for someone else's problem seems legit.
You are looking for vehicles that are way too nice.
Battery colab with Aging Wheels?
YES
But 100%Jake is local, and he's got an insight he already did the lithium swap from the second generation insight.... That promptly got rear ended, and last I remember, is just sitting at his house....
@@earlyre That means he isn't too far from JR.
I hope he can still sleep at night.
New Lithium batteries and motor with the Kubota running a generator.
I definitely want to see an upgraded lithium swap here
Had the Assistant Manager at our local O’Murray’s tell me that single $2.99 clamp was worse deal than set of two clamps for $7.99.
😂
Math is hard.
It is a worse deal... for O'Murray's.
Like barbie said "math is hard"
So between the two, the projects will be known hence forth as "The Twinsights"... :P
@4:32 This reminds me of the Alternative Fuel Experiments I conducted when I was a little kid back in the late 19 and 50s. The experiments were to see if I could release heat energy stored in various petroleum products that were in my old man's garage using THE POWER OF THE SUN ... combined with a magnifying glass. The results were such an astounding success that I decided to switch from petroleum products to whatever else I could find. Things were going good until I started experimenting with acetone. The ignition was immediate ... and powerful. This caused me to jump back a little and knock over the can of acetone. Then my Father came running out of the house, put out my experiment and started throwing a lot of rapid fire questions at me about my sanity and if I was really trying to set the garage on fire. After a lot of yelling, a stout thrashing (1950s child rearing was much different than it is today) and banishment to my room I ceased my experiments ... until about 20 years ago when I discovered that diesel engines would run on old motor oil.
Me in the 1980s.
@@SlinkyD Interestingly, this all occurred in the very same garage that some years prior little Annie Kelly and I conducted anatomical observations and examinations that proved BEYOND AS SHADOW OF A DOUBT that she and I had significant physical differences and were preparing our report for the Journal of American Medicine ... when my Father walked into the garage. My Father's reaction to these events are probably the reason I never became a scientist OR a Doctor.

Ah... Sunday morning. Sunshine, relaxed breakfast, fresh, hot coffee, and a new video from Robot Cantina.
Life is good
I actually watch these videos while cooking 😂
When I was a kid, I used to watch saturday morning cartoons. As an adult, I watch sunday morning youtube. 😎
Mine ran 180 volts at full charge. There are 20 sticks of 6 D cell batteries, 120 D cells total that run from 1.2 volts to 1.5 volts each for 180 at optimum charge.
180 volts is pretty high and indicates resistance inside the nimh cells. It should peak at about 172 while charging. 164 is nominal for a fully charged battery.
@@chrisdenney6520 I installed a 180 volt charger in mine & it was recommended by the company that made the charger to bring it to that voltage periodically to balance the cells. Recently sold the car but the original battery was still good.
120 Ni-mh D-cell batteries? Sounds like an upcoming jungle site purchase for Jimbo.
Though not caring about the mpg, the lost 13hp could be restored for about $120 bucks assuming you can get a rechargable 1.5 cells for $1. (Probably can come close to that bulk ordering from the jungle site)
I think it just needs a Mr. Fusion unit and some banana peels.

To solve the "alternator" issue, you can get a motorcycle 3 phase voltage regulator/rectifier and connect the 3 phase input to the motor cables and the output to the battery. Choose a regulator from a bike with a high redline RPM so it can withstand the voltage generated by the hybrid motor.
Motorcycles generate electricity with permanent magnet generators attached to the crankshaft, just like the Honda Insight.
Auto parts stores can't do anything without their computer telling them what to do. It's sad. I went to 2 different ones you mentioned and was looking for a muffler with a 2 1/4 inch inlet/outlet. I was making a custom exhaust.
Do they have mufflers? Sure, but they can't find it without year, make, and model. I keep telling them, it doesn't matter what make a model is, I just need any muffler with the right sized inlet/outlets, but they still can't do their job without the computer telling them what box to pick.
I used to work in a bike shop on the parts counter and I allways had people queuing to get me to serve them as I would go the extra mile and match up Berings cables or whatever. Unfortunately the new boss thought that a beard was inappropriate in a modern shop !!! The half wits that took over couldn't find there ass in a dark room and the company lost lots of cred in the local bike scene....I feel your pain as I had this experience in a local car dealership, the young goon wanted all the details when he could just go look on the shelf.....
No beards... in a BIKE SHOP? That's impressive.@@cedhome7945
I used to work in auto parts. the manufacturers started saving costs by not editing the catalogs (so many mistakes!) then shrinking the print catalogs by removing reference pages such as interchange, product info, and SPECIFICATIONs. they also stopped publishing old auto and non auto catalogs. Then they quit publishing paper catalogs all together. meanwhile, for a little over minimum wage, the new hires who got jobs because the old timers quit, can use the computer but the computer programming was never updated to search beyond Year Make Model Engine 4wd... I don't know if some groups got sued for specifying non application parts or what but parts stores definitely are not what they once were.
I needed a fuel filter. Just any standard clear filter like for a lawn mower. They could not do anything for me without year make and model.
Dang, I started to see double there at the end, great show again Thanx! 🎉
As I recall the battery pack was very simple. 100 and some "D" cell nicklel-hydride wired in series.
Twenty sticks of six NiMH cells each, yes. Not as powerful as modern lithium, but a LOT more durable.
I let my first-gen sit too long during the pandemic and the car wouldn't accept the hybrid battery. So I took it out, reconditioned each of the 6-cell sticks using RC car battery chargers to drain and charge each of them multiple times, used a thermal camera to monitor individual cell temps and trickle-charged the ones that were imbalanced back into better shape, then charged them to equal voltages, put them back in the pack, and the car was happy again. Beat shelling out $3k to the dealership for a new one to be installed.
I've also seen video online of one owner who just hooks the battery up to some floodlights overnight to drain it dead, then charges it back up again. Does it once a year and the car has apparently been happy with this arrangement for years. If someone tried that with lithium it would be a considerably more exciting time. :D
@@IstasPumaNevada _" Not as powerful as modern lithium, but a LOT more durable. "_
They don't suffer the exciting thermal runaway events that we all know and love. Just as well when the pack is mounted in the trunk.
Ahh yes, the irish auto parts place.
"Old Oily"
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Really's?
My local Irish Auto Parts store is a joke. They're rude and never have what I need. I wish they would just go out of business and we could get another parts store.
Whenever I walk into one I want to show them the "Orally men" scene from "Fawlty Towers."
I thought the other chain was "Never Any Parts Available", at least there is competition for the title from O'Rarely and OughttaKnown.
This is how it starts, "oh hey, what's better than one, but TWO OF COURSE!" Flash forward 3 years and you've changed your name to "The Insight Man" and people are reaching out wanting to sell or give you theirs. Your biggest decision of the day is what color Insight to drive, and your insurance agent has a monthly email with a tally of the number of Insights you want covered.
Just be careful
Maybe @100percentjake has some ideas on the hybrid system. IIRC he made a litium replacement battery for his insight before someone ran into him totalling it.
Man ive been looking for a dead one for years with a 5 speed. I love these cars like i love geo metros 😂
It's insane how many auto parts stores don't stock rubber fuel line anymore! Seriously. If they do, it's usually extremely short lengths for insane prices. I buy mine online in bulk so I have it on hand. This video also gave me a great idea for rust proofing steel brake/fuel lines I repair. After cutting back the line, I'll slide heat shrink tubing over it, then flare and add the fitting or connection, then add silicone lube and heat shrink the tube over the exposed steel area. Just like protecting wiring connections! Using big enough heat shrink or two different sized pieces you could even cover and rust proof the entire junction.
Another great Sunday. This channel is always great with my first cup of coffee.
Jimbo's town must mow be the one with the highest number of Honda Insights per citizen.
I'm glad you have put the new project car on hold. This gives me time to convince you to try burning wood gas! There is a LOT of info on this on the disc I sent you ... and PLENTY of examples of gasifiers on RUclips ... in the form of old WW2 vintage Volvo (and other) trucks. Some of the information I sent was put together by FEMA, you know ... THE GOVERNMENT ... so you KNOW it's OK to do!
I had a bone stock base model 04 Civic 1.7L 5 speed, I absolutely LOVED that car and did my level best to drive it into the ground. I did not succeed. It got rear-ended, I drove it home after the accident and my insurance totaled it. If Honda still made that car I'd buy one without hesitation.
I have a 02 Civic, which I bought with a blown head gasket, which I fixed.
I just never finished putting everything else together...
I got into grad school across the state, so I just hope to make the time to make it running so I can sell it.

@@drippingwax I wish you the best of luck. They hold their value fairly well, even totalled they offered me $4500 for it.
@@Rattus-Norvegicus Thanks! :)
It has 250,000 miles and Kelley says it would be worth $2,005.
It is a good-looking car, but I see decent-looking Civics on Facebook Marketplace starting a little above $2,000, so I am tempering my expectations--whenever I can finally put it together.
I had no idea you could make so much horsepower with that 4 cyl engine. 500hp in that light little car would be fun! Thanks for another great installment.
some mods are needed internally on most k-series engines to handle cranking a bit more torque from the engine, the stock rods are toothpicks.. taylor ray and the cefiro he had.. blew the stock bottom-end out the k24 he first put in it after he put the correct parts [he forgot the wastegate fire-ring] in the turbo setup he was running in it
Some internally reinforced Honda K20 turbo engines (2.0 L 4 cylinder) make 600 to 1000hp.....The 2L makes less torque than the 2.4L but the 2.0 is preferred for making big 500+ hp. Can't remember the reason. I think the shorter piston rods mame it stronger & get to high rpm easier. The more I learn about the gen 1 Honda Insight, the more I want one. It's all aluminum, so no rust issues, very lightweight, very aerodynamic, lot's of usable hatchback room. Even with a non turbo Honda 2.4L engine. Modded to put out 150hp & decent torque. A manual Insight would have some pep, be fun to drive & still get 55-60 hwy mpgs. 🤔 I read other people have added a bigger battery pack. So the electric motor between engine & gearbox puts out more power, creating even better fuel economy. If someone drove say 40 miles round trip to work each day & had bought a used 100K insight years ago for a couple grand. The car would pay for itself in fuel savings.
@@michaelbrinks8089 The K20 has a "square" bore/stroke ratio: bore=86mm, stroke=86mm. The K24 is very undersquare with bore=86mm, stroke=99mm which means higher pistons speeds and accelerations, and more stress on the pistons, rods and crank.
@@ferrumignis Stanceworks put a turbo K24 in an 80s Ferrari 308 to build an awesome looking race car...The guy is very knowledgeable & built the thing himself doing tons of custom fabrication work. Then blew the engine racing. It wasn't until after the engine blew up. That he learned a k20 would have been the better choice for trying to make a 900- to 1000hp engine. I was very surprised to learn he didn't do any research before choosing to buy a K20 or K24. I guess he automatically assumed the K24 was the best choice since it was bigger (like I did) ......🤔 I'm wondering if the 3 cyl stock insight engine could safely make 100hp with a small supercharger or turbo? He could sell all the working hybrid parts & use the $$ for a turbo engine only commuter car. Maybe do E85 build to help keep engine temps down. My guess is the engine probably isn't built to handle much over it's original stock hp though.
@@michaelbrinks8089 I'd be surprised if the internals weren't up to the job, 100bhp from a 1 litre turbocharged engine is not particularly stressed. However the engine does have a fairly high compression ratio (10.8:1) so would need some care taken.
These cars must be super efficient and light if converted to EV. A Leaf power module in the front might fit with the distribution block relocated.
I wouldn't mix any nissan parts with a Honda. Thats blasphemy...
A few years back a guy replaced the NIMH pack with Leaf cells & modded the electronics a bit so he could manually control the hybrid pancake motor. He called it a LINSIGHT. He could keep the mpg reading at 150.
"Nissanda" rolls off the tongue... and the road

Another cool project. Keeping it for a shop runner sounds good. If anything cut it up and make a ute out of her. That'll spark the purist.
Hi Jimbo, it's a Honda, it's a keeper.
Without the hybrid it still works (with the hack) and so you're in good shape.

It just dawned on me I may be too stupid to watch this. Sunday morning and just starting to

I miss the gnomes. Did they return to MI.?
The gnomes are always up to something......
How certain are you that the hybrid battery is beyond hope?
After I let my first-gen Insight sit too long during the pandemic, the car wouldn't recognize the IMA battery. So I took it out and manually reconditioned each of the twenty 6-cell NiMH Battery sticks with a couple four-port RC car chargers. Discharge, charge, watch cell temps with an infrared camera, trickle-charge the ones that were imbalanced, couple more discharge-charge cycles, then charged the sticks to equal voltage and put them back in the pack. Once I had the pack back in the car, it was happy again! Seems to give as good or better capacity compared to when I got the car six years ago.
Brilliant! I like the Insight. This car has a Citroën like appeal to me. I’m looking forward to more Honda adventures. Thanks for this story and see you soon… 🇺🇸🥰🇩🇪

15:05 Is that the regular owner's manual, or a Haynes manual? Because if it's the regular owner's manual then I must say I'm impressed. Full schematics in the manual are basically extinct, a modern automotive owner's manual is basically nothing but legalese to cover the ass of the manufacturer, with a modicum of useful information sprinkled in there.
18:20 Jimbo! You forgot to blur your face!
Don’t get me started on parts store workers these days! We have a Napa in our tiny town that was ran for decades by a couple brothers and they knew their shit without even looking in a parts computer. Then sadly one brother died and the other retired now we got young kids looking up parts they’ve never heard of for vehicles they know nothing about. I buy a lot of stuff off eBay these days 🤣
Parts stores have gone to paying absolute garbage and that gets them hiring folks fhat couldnt unscrew a lightbulb much less work on a car.
For reference- autozone last i checked pays a buck over minimum here or something like that, and oreilly is only a buck or two more than that. Theres no investment in the knowledge of their people, cause theyll just hire another 20 year old Chad that cant even change his own oil, for 8 bucks an hour to stand behind a counter.
Our napa store is more like what yours WAS like, thankfully
If you decide to ditch the high voltage battery, a first gen civic hybrid 5 speed will bolt up with very minor modification and the moderately shorter gearing does a great job of making up for the lack of ima torque without hurting economy too bad. I've been running around with mine set up that way for probably about 40k miles now and it still gets 55+ mpg at 70+ miles an hour in the summer.
Lol buddies of mine were working on a isuzu rodeo that had been sitting for a very long time something like 10 years. Fuel pump was bad. Fuel in the tank was brown. They dumped it to kill some grass and made a bet it wouldnt light. Well nothing good came of that. Ended up melting all the vinyl siding off the front of their garage haha whole front yard on fire luckly it burned out quickly. Got that rodeo running and it ended up spinning a bearing while idiling like the first 2 or 3 minutes. Garbage.
The Insight sounds like my Fit. The honda dealier adjusted the valves(for maximum noise for me. I'm not to happy with them
Great video!

“...never know till you try.” 😂
I’ll be looking forward to the hybrid delete 👍
This is so awesome you got this car Jimbo. I bought an 03 Civic Hybrid 5 speed for $800 and ive got it running pretty well. I trickle charged the 12v for a whole day and it seems to have eliminated all but an airbag and o2 sensor codes. I have to do a little rust repair but im gonna have it on the road soon. Looking forward to this season, its gonna be excellent
and heck, having the mostly functional unmodded car gives a good FoR to get the gauge-panel in the diesel-powered car working via a custom adapter module
I have a buddy who bought his insight used from someone and replaced the batteries (and a few other things). That was over 15 years ago. He still uses it as his daily driver.

I know you said the hybrid stuff doesn't interest you, but the lithium battery swap would be a great upgrade.
Excellent, what a good find, loved the k swap too!
The guy at the parts store doesnt know where stuff is because knowing anything is above the pay grade they're getting. Suvks but true
Do you have any ''Insight'' as to where the Grn/Ylw wire is broke!🤣
Yes, Off camera we removed the dash from the car and found rodent damage to the harness. The fuel pump and the starter wire were the only two wires that were damaged. The harness was repaired and now everything on the car works, including the hybrid stuff. I'm amazed that the batery pack still works. We will post an update in a few weeks.
Big block swap. !! A 3.5 honda engine. See if you can get better mpg with a bigger engine
Thinking some type of immobilizer or alarm that is installed that is keeping the fuel pump from running.
if all the hybrid system is doing is charging the 12V why not: a) use some diodes and a DC-DC to charge it, saving the weight? OR b) mount a 12V solar panel on the roof or something?
Surprised how well that engine started and sounded after sitting so long!!
Love the content, as I’ve never had to dig into my 260k 2000 model, it still gets over 60mpg driving 70-80mph!

I've taken 10 gallons worth of 5 yr old gasoline, added two bottles of $1 DG generic fuel system cleaner to it. Then mixed 1 old gallon of it with 2 fresh gallons & it ran fine in my carbureted motorcycle.
i heard that automotive wire insulation is soy based , therefore tasty to rodents . maybe plastic fuel lines are too .
Look how big that battery pack is, you could fit so much fuel in that volume. Now that would give it long enough legs to stick a serious engine in that doesn’t belong in a Honda.
It might be nice to replace all the electronics in the cabin with a simple bridge rectifier and regulator under the hood to both make some more room and get rid of the high voltage stuff.
Typical Honda. Fires up after 1 revolution.
Thank you for sharing your Insights.
That 3ph ac voltage you meager between the phases not with ground
Wow, I really enjoy your videos. I learn a lot from watching them. I kinda wonder if it can get that kind of MPG on just the gasoline engine, what could it get if it had a modern hibird system with the newer type batteries? I am on my second prius and I really like them. I can get better fuel economy than many motorcycles. That being said I feel like they could get even better fuel economy than they are. I know the real new prius's are rated at a combined 57 MPG mine was rated at around 51 MPG. I think if they were to use a small diesel engine they could get much better fuel efficiency from them. I know diesel is not very big in the consumer market in the US and I think that's mostly because of the GM junk they released in the 70's or 80's that were nothing but trouble. I have owned several diesels over the years and when everyone else was getting maybe the high 20's I was getting 50+ MPG with a non turbo and then I got a turbo charged and it didn't get as good of MPG it got more like 40 it definitely had much more power and it was pretty fun to drive. The first one I sold to a friend when it had 200,000 miles on it and he ran it up past the 300,000 mile mark when the body and frame were rusting away. I think he went out west and purchased a car that was rust free but needed a motor and put the motor in it and kept running it. With modern batteries and electronics I can't see why hibirds can't get more closer to the 100 MPG mark. Anyway, keep up the great videos I look forward to waking up to them.
And can you please work on the next project car on this video more
Sweet!!
Another excellent video Jimbo. It's great to see how well those old vehicles old up after all this time. And that K swap was beautiful! I'm impressed you managed to do all of that work inside 16 hours. I guess that's what years of experience brings.
I'd turn it into a full ev.then you can compare an contrast.
Jimbo, would you consider the hybrid battery mod 100PercentJake did?
Yes! +1 for a lithium battery swap.
I'm thinking that may be too expensive and the car is OK just as a gasoline vehicle.
Jake might still have the bits and may be willing to let them go to a good home for a reasonable price making it basically plug and play. You'd have an Insight that's better than new :)
I would be curious if it is possible to upgrade the battery to a LiFePo, and maybe put in a newer lighter electric motor (aftermarket motor). The new battery should be able to supply the same power with less weight, and the newer motor (I have no idea what to expect) would be interesting.
There's a kit to swap the lithium pack from a second generation insight.
100%Jake did that upgrade, has the car all working and mint.... Then he got rear ended....
You can buy a cheap lithium battery pack replacement

Try to build a car with a gasoline engine running on liquefied gas. It also saves a lot of money...

My husband and I enjoy your videos!
You ever try to blow out a gas fire? Heh heh heh
i would not even bother with the hybid junk
👈🏻 Those fuel lines left a fishy taste in my mouth
Why do you say the "technology" is old? Is it because it uses Nickel Metal Hydride batteries instead of lithium? Or are you saying it because modern technology in newer hybrid cars is simply better? I'm not criticizing, I'm just looking for more on your opinion on the subject.
Between battery chemistry, and motor technology, and other related items like motor controllers, id say its a bit of all of it, thats outdated.
The tech is old and due to the age it may not be reliable.
Something that would be neat is using a rectifier like off a sxs or atv on the 3 ac lines like a stator, to charge the 12v battery. Would eliminate a lot of the electrical junk in the trunk.
Might even fit under the seat... rectumfrier?
It would blow up the rectifier/regulator pretty much instantly. Jimbo didn't measure the alternator output correctly, should be phase to phase, not phase to ground. It can put out up to 320V peak, and those motorcycle regulators work by shorting the phases together when the voltage gets too high, relying on the relatively high impedance of the small motorcycle alternator.
How about a LS swap or 13b swap?
for sort boost may can repair the battery .. salvage the healthy cell and BMS need around 38 battery cell in series for 160 V...
Off camera, we repaired some wiring under the dashboard that had rodent damage. after the repairs, everything on the car worked including the IMA. At this point the battery pack is fully functional. I'm not sure how something that old can still work, but it does. One of the things I didn't mention in the video is this car is one of the first 50 that was produced in 1999. Perhaps this car has components that exceeded the normal manufacturing tolerances. Just a guess. Anyway we will release the update video soon.
@@robotcantina8957 ah .. nice.. NiMh cell can be drain to 0 V and no damage.. lithium will swell or leaking fast under operating voltage.

I’d love a 1st gen insight, unfortunately in the uk you’re more likely to find someone selling a pile of rocking horse poop sprinkled with hens teeth than one of these!🙁

What to do with this fresh Insight, hrmm...
You could K swap it (mild, K20 150 horse, should be the cheap bits)
You could K swap it (Chrysler 2.2L TBI, only 93 horses but dirt cheap and will run forever, and should be an absolute blast in that light a car)
You could Kei swap it (JDM 660CC engines from Kei cars)
You could K swap it (Rover K, which would take some importing but you could get the SAIC Kavachi engine from China as a grey import crate motor)
You could K swap it (Toyota 4K, from an 80's Corolla)
You could K swap it (Mazda K8, that brilliant little 1.8L V6 in the Mazda MX-3)
You could even K swap it (Renault K4M from a modern Dacia Logan, another import, but you'd have a Renault engine to put in the insight.... and an insight engine left over to put in the Renault?)
Or take it up a notch and L swap it... L15A1 from a Honda Fit. Should Fit, and would be Fit for purpose.
Repower this Insight with five hamsters in a wheel driving the Renault's old clutch.
Also, when I worked for Mercedes-Benz we had problems with fuel lines and wires from this era getting eaten by rodents because they switched to a soy-based plastic polymer/insulation that smells sweet when it begins to break down.
Our recommendation to the handful of people who kept their Benzes beyond the warranty was to put peppermint teabags in the engine compartment and interior. Apparently, peppermint drives rodents *crazy* and keeps them from chowing down on the factory harness as it slowly breaks down into goop.
I guess you're officially one of the Insight collectors now! I saved 4 Insights from being junked. Three fixables in silver and one crashed parts car in blue. One was $300, one was $100, and two were free. I've been driving one since the Summer of 2019, mostly without the hybrid battery. 63.4 MPG average. A few trips of around 100 MPG with all the hypermiling tricks. All you need to charge the 12v battery is a 3-phase bridge rectifier, filter capacitors (steal from MDM), and the DC/DC converter. Ideally fuses too! Charging will cut off above 4000 RPM and at a low idle speed. The DC/DC can be modified to increase the high RPM cutoff.
You can bypass the starter relay that is controlled by the ECM. It's in the under dash fuse panel.
I'm surprised there's any voltage between the chassis and the HV wires. The HV system is isolated from everything else.
Do the Arduino mod! I have mine in the back, but it'll actually fit inside the ECM.
Its so jarring not hearing a diesel or a lawnmower engine running in a Insight, ahahahahaaa
Its weird to drive this car and not hear a 212 cc or a 420 cc or a 719 cc engine.
Of course, just in case nobody else suggested it...... and you KNEW this was coming.... I see an Insight race in the future! 😁
Yes!
