I just love this woman! She's amazing! Contagious enthusiasm and genuine appreciation and passion for the rocks! Nothing fake about her She's happy in her work...I wish I were with her ...sifting..finding...joy...what a fantastic day out! X
Thanks for watching and the kind comment metaphysics. Liz is certainly a great barrel of fun when she gets amongst the gemstones. Glad you found the vid entertaining. Hope all's great over your way...Cheers Wal.
I know how this may seem.....but I have been helping my parents who are elderly, and sing at their church, called Heaven bound, d it helps people and their faith. So, while riding around on a lovely used scooter I felt like I needed to stopp by this area full of trees. And I walked right to that lovely rock full of shiny crystals. It is like a terrific gift from our precious Father God. I happened to catch one of your interesting videos after thinking about that "gift" and whether I could find something else that would be precious to me. Something like that happened to me before about that rock when I happened to just walk up to an actual Indian arrow head. I live in Oklahoma, and there are so many rocks. I was not searching for any thing when I found the arrowhead. It was another gift I am sure. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you very much for your comment Aman. I'm glad you share our common interest in gemstones and I'm sure you will find their presence rewarding in many ways. All the very best and hope luck stays on your side. Cheers, Wal
When I was a child my Grandfather always panned for gold. During the Summer he took me with him. There was a river here in California that he was panning , there were all these little beautiful red pebbles. I asked him what they were he said they're just Garnets , they're not worth much ( they were very small ). When I grew up and learned that they were jewels I wished I would have picked them up and saved them. I love Garnets and think of my Grandfather when I see them. : )
Thanks for watching Pamela. Once the garnets get to a reasonable size they are very popular in jewellery, and nice to hear that they remind you of your grandfather. All the very best...Wal.
Thanks for sharing. Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum, 205 N Walker St. Marion, KY houses an outstanding collection of minerals, gemstones, carvings, period journals, photographs, mining tools and other items. The collection has been visited by various authorities on minerals and is believed to be one of the finest in existence. The Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum, Inc. was formed in June 1990 to make the attraction something that would generate outside interest in the mineral and mining heritage of West Kentucky.
Wow, Thanks for this. I Love Garnets and I've never seen anyone digging for these before. Really interesting. Good luck in the future. Love from Dorset. UK.
+MungoidHen ...Glad you enjoyed the vid. The particular garnet from this region has a distinctive mauve colouring which is not very common in the garnet family. Hope all's going great in the UK....cheers Wal.
Wal nLiz Wow yeah very pretty. I bet it must be quite addictive searching for these beauties. Hard work too though, by the looks of it. Thanks again for sharing. Yeah things are good in the UK, but it's a bit cold over here at the moment !! = )
Thanks for another great video. I do enjoy watching your work. I'm a mostly retired geologist. My initial opinion on the source rock for your garnets is that it is a biotite, sillimanite, garnet schist.
We did the track in your vid Easter w/e just gone, followed your directions, did a HUGE amount of exploring throughout the Cattlewater Pass and associated tracks but the hole you were digging in with that amount of schist was nowhere to be found. We think a waterhole with bulldozed and gravelled sides may have been it. Further down were the fossicking areas which produced an abundance of garnets, mostly low grade though we did manage to find a nice 6-7mm cutter. I would also like to warn any visitors to this track that there are a couple of sharp rocky sections that could take out a tyre or two and that took a chunk off our 50/50's with careful driving.....but a great place to visit and camp..
Garnet is quite common all over the world and I'm sure there would be some not far from your area....hope you get a chance to collect some for yourself....Cheers Wal.
Ahh every time I watch your vids, I just want to hop on a plane and head to Australia! Awesome finds. I cant wait for winter to be over so I can head out and find some more herkimer diamonds
+Myles Nicholas ...Certainly a great idea when the weather gets real hot, and there's many days on the garnets where the weather gets up around 40C like over in Perth. Take care and all the best...Wal.
Absolutely beautiful Garnets! Never knew they came in pink. The ones we see here in Alaska are a brandy red color and we hope to go digging for them for the first time this coming summer. Thanks for taking us along and sharing in such a wonderful hobby. BTW, do you folks get them cut? Would love to see what they look like finished. GL&HH Doug, Palmer Alaska
Thanks for watching Archaeodigger and commenting. There's only a few areas in Australia where this color can be found and they make a nice stone when cut. We generally cut our own stones but have been too busy cutting Sapphires for a while. Will cut a few of these Garnets next and post some pics for you. All the very best...Wal.
+Ross Berg Thanks for watching Ross and hope you found the vid interesting. If ever you head that way, I'm sure you'll have a great time. All the very best, Wal
Great dig. I know Garnetts are some of the most common gemstones but still, I've seen some beautiful stones that are Garnetts. Think about it, Tsavorite and the mandarin variety of spessartite, are Garnets, not to mention demantoid. Keep up the good work. Happy Hunting.
thomas101834 Hope you enjoyed the dig thomas. It's the thrill of the hunt that makes rock hounding such a pleasant pastime and even common Garnets can bring a smile if the color is clear and cutable. Take care...Wal.
There's other plaves nearby with real gemmy cubes of the stuff. Quite a dark red though. Found plenty of the pink stuff too but it's a bit harder to find a big gemmy piece of the pink.
Thanks for the comment Peregar. I can't seem to think when I have the gopro on my head or chest. I've tried using it but have to revert back to this camera. I'm still working on a gadget that I could mount somewhere close to me so I can get a better non shaky shot. All the best, Liz
Was seems to be a man of few words. Goes in gets the job done, then when the time is right, goes to get his cuppa. :-) I LOVE garnets. Found myself weeping through the video. (sigh). Great job!
I have just found your videos and I love what you do :) My dream is to go and dig for crystals , I love all of them :) Thank you for doing what you do :)
They're best set in jewelery before trying to sell them. Some of the pinks can fetch good money, and I've seen them sell for over $70 / ct. Cheers Wal.
There are tons of garnets in my area. I'm near Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, and I've found tiny ones in matrix rocks, though I once found one the size of my thumbnail.
+sarah mark Thanks for watching Sarah. Clear ones can cut into a very good looking gemstone and set well in rings and pendants. All the very best...Wal.
very nice! hey, wal&liz. i really enjoyed watching you guyse's vides, hey liz you think you can give me a tips on finding or what are the indications in finding gems what to look for before i start digging. i'm just getting into this and i'm still lost in what to look for thank you much and god bless!
Glad you're enjoying the vids Christopher. Firstly you need to research some gemstone location books for gem deposits near your area. Particular gemstones, such as Sapphires, Garnets Zircons, have a very high specific gravity and as such are generally on the lower sections of the wash and close to / on the bedrock. The best indicators are the heavier ironstone minerals and a common heavy black stone called Spinel. These all concentrate together in the wash. Best of luck with it all...Cheers Wal.
Wow! Love this info. Thank you sooo.. much. I will copy and paste this then print it out so i well have it all the time whenever I need to refresh my memory. :) thanks again. god bless always. Cheers....
Interesting video. I wish I could go there but I live in the US. I had a question, you mentioned in a old comment that you send some of the garnets to Thailand for cutting. I've tried looking online but couldn't find an answer. Why is the gemcutting industry so big in Thailand? On ebay, pretty much all the cut gems come out of Thailand.
Thanks for watching Artemio and sorry to take so long to respond....been in the Australian Outback chasing gold and gemstones for the past 3 months. We send many of our lesser quality stones to "Lamberts" and cut the better ones our self. Cheers Wal.
Could you do an update on your finds when you take it home and you start to clean them up and shape it for a ring or show us what you do with them all, thanks loved your video. Makes me want to look for some.
Thanks for watching Mega and commenting. A jewelery making vid is certainly on our list for this channel, but if you go and check out Liz Kreate channel she has a fewtutorials of what we do on there....All the best..Wal.
You guys are finding large garnets. We find smaller garnets in California and I was told by a jewler they are worthless. Very curious how much a large garnet is worth.
Thanks for watching Chris. A lot depends on the type of garnet and the color, as they come in various colors from red to pink to green etc, with the pinks and greens bringing bigger premiums because of the rarity. If a jeweler told you that garnet is worthless, then maybe you could ask him why is it he is selling worthless stones in his shop. He will have lots of garnet rings and jewelery on display. Mention to him, seeing that they are worthless, can he sell one to you for your wife at half price.....love to see his reaction. Cheers Wal.
I get your point, but he is a family friend. He may have just meant my small buck shot sized garnetts were worthless. Mostly Dark red is what we found too.
+Claude Tremblay ...Thanks for watching Claude. We use the better quality stones in our jewelry creations, and facet many for dress rings. All the best...Wal.
+Hard Rock University Thanks for watching Keith. Generally speaking, tumbling will not cause a garnet to fracture and break along inclusion lines, so this would not be a viable way of sorting. What tumbling does do, is clearly show where the fracture lines are, and as such gives a great indication of what is a facetable stone. It also gives the best indication of what the cut color will look like, and makes preforming of the stone much easier prior to cutting. All the best...Wal.
Very interesting. I haven't seen much in the way of gemstone prospecting on You Tube and your videos are intriguing. I will keep my eyes open to the possibility in the future. Keith
nice video i learn much from it, do u ever mined black tourmaline and what other mineral is expected to be with black tourmaline specially when the said mineral is in feldspar.
kifayat rehman Black tourmaline is associated with the quartz variety of minerals. Often, a variety of garnets and occasionally beryl is formed within the same locality. Cheers, Wal
Using a petzal light to see the facet quality...pink is Almandine cheers & thanks! maybe most of them are Pyralspites(Pyrope,Almandine,Spessartites) we have them in BC,Canada.
Mosess Goldenberg Thanks Mosess. I may have to look into Sri Lanka myself as we have noticed also that some of our stones from Thailand have been getting poorer in quality. All the best, Wal
There is also garnet stone in the Wallan - Melton area, out of Bacchus Marsh Pentland hills Gorges and Pykes Creek in Victoria. I was a prospector of 13 years until I met the fires of Blackwood 10 years ago. I nearly got roasted. Garnet can be found everywhere, even in rivers around Haunted Stream, East Victoria and Beechworth. Wetting the stone shows the true dark red colour but in dry climate, if you're not aware, you can miss them because they're often blended with other minerals. Garnet is plentiful and have a lower value than precious gems. I would like to try this area but cost of travel and fuel is forbidding; and the heat and flies are unforgiving. So, no many people go in NT.
Thanks for the comment Mick and sorry to hear you were in the firing line with those fires. Garnets are fairly common over here in the Eastern states but they don't get as large. We hunt for them more for the adventure than the price, as we combine the gem hunting with the metal detecting for gold. All the very best...Cheers Wal.
Good day Wal. Thanks for responding. If you found a 1 inch gem of good quality, nothing special, can I buy it from you? Beats wasting money travelling all the way to NT and traipsing on rocks under the harsh heat. Just asking, anyway. If you have found as many pieces as I see in the video, I am sure you will want to sell some. Let me know. Thanks mate.
Mick Carson We haven't got any for sale at the moment Mick, but will be shortly setting up a web page on which we will be selling some of our gemstones. Just keep an eye for our video announcement. Best wishes, Wal
I got geological gemstone magazine as a kid for a while and this other solid transparent cube for looking at small items like insects which had a magnifying lid and we had a not so useful a microscope. I think I might be a scientist or something
+MrPectus3 ...Thanks for watching and hope all is going great over there in Finland. We have many Finnish friends over here and all are very keen trout fishermen. Take care...Wal.
How much are such things worth? I guess that's quite a lucrative business! I'd love to be doing that. I'm at my happiest when I'm looking for something. Especially natural things.
+Celtic Saint ... Thanks for watching Celtic. Garnets fall into the category of Semi precious stones and as a general rule gain their value once cut and polished for jewelry making. Large individual stones also are well sought after my mineral collectors and can hold high value. Cheers Wal.
Thanks for your reply. It looked like great fun. I occasionally look on eBay to see what crystals/fossils are up for sale. The local museum in the City where I used to live had a lovely collection. All the best, CR
Im in the uk and have fallen in love with prospecting from this USA show called Prospectors. Do you actually own that piece of land or you just apply and get a license
+Unfoldedwarrior ...Thanks for watching. Most of the gemstones in Australia are on crown land and as such are free to prospect. Some are on private property but permission is most often given if asked for to search for minerals. All the best...Wal.
Just wondering, do you find any gold when you're sifting garnets? In US, garnets and gold are very commonly found together, as well as other semi precious stones.
Thanks for watching William. This particular location has no gold in the area, but as in the States, we do have many gold bearing streams that have garnet associated with it. Best of luck out there. Cheers Wal.
I just found garnets at Ruby gap gorge. If I ever find a Decent size one, who do you get to facet them? (I’m in Victoria). Is there a special fossicking group I can ask?
Thanks for watching Olga. Yes, anyone can collect them. All of our videos are locations of prospecting field that anyone can go to and collect gold and gems. Some areas require a Permit which anyone can obtain for a small fee. All the very best, Liz

A popup shade cloth awning would be a winner, just enough light to see what you are doing. A week of 40C here on the coast in Perth.
+Myles Nicholas ...Certainly a great idea when the weather gets real hot, and there's many days on the garnets where the weather gets up around 40C like over in Perth. Take care and all the best...Wal.

Well worth the effort you can make it up that way...

Keith
I love ❤️ it omg 😮 beautiful,beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
nice video i learn much from it, do u ever mined black tourmaline and what other mineral is expected to be with black tourmaline specially when the said mineral is in feldspar.
Thanks for watching Kifayat. We only mine clear gemstones as we use them for faceting and jewelry making. Best of luck in your area. Cheers, Wal
Hi,
You didn't answered what I have asked. What other minerals r expected to b in association with black tourmaline when u r digging?
Thx
kifayat rehman
Black tourmaline is associated with the quartz variety of minerals. Often, a variety of garnets and occasionally beryl is formed within the same locality. Cheers, Wal
Thank you very much
Do you have videos of your jewelry making using the gems you find?
Using a petzal light to see the facet quality...pink is Almandine cheers & thanks!
maybe most of them are Pyralspites(Pyrope,Almandine,Spessartites) we have them in BC,Canada.
Thanks for watching and commenting Mosess. Do you by any chance cut them?
I do cabochons myself but we usually send the facet grade material to Sri Lanka because their cutting is way better than Thailand.
Mosess Goldenberg
Thanks Mosess.
Mick Carson
We haven't got any for sale at the moment Mick, but will be shortly setting up a web page on which we will be selling some of our gemstones. Just keep an eye for our video announcement. Best wishes, Wal
Wal nLiz That's a good idea, Wal. Keep the good work going. Hope to hear from you soon. Regards.
Michael.
I got geological gemstone magazine as a kid for a while and this other solid transparent cube for looking at small items like insects which had a magnifying lid and we had a not so useful a microscope. I think I might be a scientist or something
This is so cool to dig
Thanks for watching.
Wonderful I'm interested in this and finding some locally
goood video and hello from finland
+MrPectus3 ...Thanks for watching and hope all is going great over there in Finland. We have many Finnish friends over here and all are very keen trout fishermen. Take care...Wal.
❤👍👍👍👍👍 very good rock very good video
THAT MUST BE WORTH A FORTUNE
great garnet garden
Very, very, very nice. :)
+Salamander Drakko ...Thanks for watching. All the very best...Wal.
+Wal nLiz Thank you.. when i visit australia.. that would be something fun to do...
Amazing Australia :)
Thanks for video. It's my first time watch about how to Digging crystals.
very helpful to me. It's awesome indeed :0
Thanks for watching DaeHan, hope you found the vid enjoyable. All the very best....Cheers Wal.
Cheers Wal.
What is the price of pomegranates in 2014 per gram? And just to take the bulk raw grenades - please address - buying???
You missed one Liz (: very cool
Hi Guys, Where in the NT are you for this video? Have you ever been digging around Alice Springs? If so what for? :) Cheers
Are u out near Mud Tank ? I found heeps out there years ago
Thanks for watching Geoff. The 2 garnet fields we visited are not far from the Mud Tank. All the very best, Wal
I just found garnets at Ruby gap gorge. If I ever find a Decent size one, who do you get to facet them? (I’m in Victoria). Is there a special fossicking group I can ask?
But... I thought Garnet's were made from Ruby's and Sapphires....
i love garnets and peridote
2:20 Oops hang on... oh a friggin huge gemstone
R U kidding me!!!!!!!??????
so anyone can go and look for them? Or speacial premision needed?
Thanks for watching Olga. Yes, anyone can collect them. All of our videos are locations of prospecting field that anyone can go to and collect gold and gems. Some areas require a Permit which anyone can obtain for a small fee. All the very best, Liz
