Yeah, so I don't know what the band's religious views are, but I'm a Christian. I myself see this song as not hating on God or Christ or religion.
I see it as being about the media and politicians in the news today twisting the word of God for hate rather than love.
But that's just me. Anyone else feel like this?
I agree. I also think they coupd be alluding to the extremism of many fundamentalist religions that basically do the same thing, especially since it alludes very clearly to the Westboror Baptist Church and their hateful message

I think it's also aimed towards religion. As a Christian you are taught that if you don't forfeit yourself to god that you will surely go to hell. It's disgusting, your mind is being conditioned into believing such bullshit. You seem to be an intellectual individual, so maybe it's time you question everything you've been taught as a Christian. You can still believe in a Christian God without buying into the bullshit that your taught as one.
If you've experienced what being a christian is (i have) there is no threat being taken into account the moment someone decides to forfeit themselves to God it is done out of pure love towards God if it was for that no one would be a christian, you cant change yourself like that without something special happening in your life. Think about that the next time you try to convince yourself that's the reason why some people fallow God.
Nothing More are atheists, but your interpretation is correct. This song is not against Jesus but against the modern incarnation of organized religion and those who use the Bible as an excuse for hate where it once taught love. Religious bands like Thrice, Chevelle and Anberlin have songs with the same message, saying that organized religion has warped God's words into those of hatred and fear. I should also note that Nothing More are huge fans of Thrice and cite them as a major influence.
The least hateful, most honest, and best put together commentary on modern religion I have seen come out of the rock/metal scene ever.
As a son and grandson of missionaries who respectfully and honestly passed down their beliefs, I have to say: nothing said in this song was wrong.
Commercialization of religion is stupid and wrong. Politicization of religion is stupid and wrong. Christianity itself is supposed to be freeing, not controlling. You decide your fate. God allows that. The rules are in place as warnings to not let anything control your life, be it overt sexuality, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, love of money, etc. People are people, and they will always be so. Man using peoples faith for control should not be blamed on God himself, even though it will be, but on those who abuse the positions and power given to them.
You are so right. I just wish more people are as smart as you these days when it comes to this subject.

I recently saw these guys in concert and they completely blew the seasoned headliners away! They are truly in their element live. For those of you reading this who have never seen them live- DO IT!!! I also discovered shortly after the show that they are the *NICEST* most personable guys you could ever meet. Solid performers, fantastic tunes, nice guys- super easy to support. Congrats on the new CD guys!
By far the most surprising band on the musical stage for a long time. Love the energy in both their melodies and their vocals.

Never heard of you guys before the announcement of Rockfest Kansas City 2014, but when you guys played, I saw an energy on stage that I saw in Heaven's Basement last year, and immediately became a fan. Great music, great message, and one of the best performances I've seen. Next time you're in KC, I'll be at the show.

Man, this is one of the best bands I've heard in a long time, and the singer stands far and above most. But, I'm not sure what to make of the lyrics for this song. I don't know if we should look to the actions of others to determine who Jesus Christ is, if that's what they're trying to say. :)
Um, I believe they're saying that Christ is used as a weapon to evoke fear, which the band clearly disagrees with. "They're selling heaven tonight" - Meaning you can't go to heaven unless you conform to a certain standard, and should be ashamed if you don't.
ShinyObsessed So, you're saying that they're not necessarily criticizing Jesus Himself? I can think of a few other religions that are used to evoke fear. Maybe they can write a song about them, too. But, anyway, this band is awesome, and I appreciate their music. :)
The lyrics are copy and paste stuff. It applies to most religions. If they started referencing every deity this applies to then this would have been a much longer song. Also, they're not just saying this stuff for the heck of it. He's singing about his personal life and what he had to live with.
This band is honestly full of geniuses.
Just saw these guys at Aftershock Festival. They played on the small stage way out of the way. They rocked it so hard that they were asked to stay and played the main stage the next day. These guys were awesome.

The sad thing is that I like to find unknown bands stick with them til they are popular. But when they do become popular their music fades and i stop listening.
Obviously yes.. They played a few songs from their new album when I went to see them, and a couple of them were talking about god or jesus. What does it matter? I'm an atheist, and they're still one of my favorite bands. They have a unique sound, and their lyrics are always deep and creative.

@smileyest09 there are spiritual connections with many of their lyrics. To understand their beliefs you'd have to get to know them personally. I'll give only my perception of the guys: they follow the teachings of Christ, but may not agree with His claim as deity. They read CS Lewis AND Gandhi. They love and respect people. They do not tolerate "religion" and blind tradition, or premature judgment. Spend time getting to know THEM and form your own conclusion.

This song really strikes something inside me. Beyond all the political meaning, the fact that people assume there are requirements to be a Christian and how people will abuse that really ties into my life. For example, i am 100% Christian but i am bisexual, something i was raised to hate. But the way that the song equalizes "fags" with communism makes it so blatant. Communism essentially being a way to organize a group, what would god have against that? Its all so superficial. Your religion is your own relationship with who you believe is a higher power. People can give all the guidelines they want, but "the silverware used does not define what the dish is"
Why do humans require a higher power for me I dont want to be a part of something greater I want to be the greater.
They don't. Humans only require a community, it just so happens that religions are the most widespread and easily accessible ones out there

Sadly our country isn't exactly progressing as much as it should, a politician literally created a bill here in California that would allow you to execute gay people if you catch them being intimate with each other. I know it won't get passed but still it's deeply disturbing that a person would literally sit down and write something like that, along with the rise of multi-million dollar church businesses who feed off the poor and are across the country on television screens. Nothing more has the sound of fair to midland and many lyrics similar to rage against the machine, the citizens of this country shouldn't fear the government, the government should fear the citizens

I would say it's more a criticism of organized religion's tendency to push a one size fits all set of values vs. discovering a personal relationship with God. At least that's what I got out of it.
