      This exactly. In that same album, they discuss how religion has affected family, but also how important it can be for finding purpose and value in life. The songs Jenny and God Went North are particularly noteworthy and are two of my favorite songs ever. They aren’t Christians, but I think they do respect authentic Christians, and are just frustrated with the politicization and over-monetization of all religion and the use of religion as an excuse to abuse and manipulate others.

      To think you know who goes to heaven
      Is just one big misconception
      Like god hates fags and communism
      Create fear to feed the system... feed the system
      This is the problem. They only know the Jesus that CNN tells them. They put the most wretched vile examples of Christians on TV for unbelievers to hate.
      Lose our hearts and breed division
      Oh my god why can't we wake up... wake up
      34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.
      Real Christians have to sit back and watch while people drag our names through the mud.

      I agree with you Pringles…the singer (Johnny Hawkins) is a Christian who sees the world as it’s becoming…a dark and twisted place where God is being used in so many sac religious ways that this song is a warning to wake up and not listen to the political and bad religious leaders…and think more for ourselves on who we’re going to listen to instead of being machines…I heard Johnny talk about this song live at a festival last weekend and he said “this song is a warning. that we need to find the light in ourselves and be careful who we listen to so we don’t become machines.”

  • @DMcElfresh101
    @DMcElfresh101 2 года назад +1

    I believe what Hawkins is referring to in the quote about the truth is within us all isn’t about them having the truth and to listen to them, it may be that you can find your own truth without influence of others because you were given that ability

  • @maddielkaye
    @maddielkaye Год назад +2

    Listening to you read Jonny’s quote and hearing you say “he’s against people claiming they have the truth, while claiming he has the truth”. While this a totally understandable interpretation, and I genuinely see where you’re coming from… he never once claims he has the truth. This is usually where the disconnect lies between Christians and non-Christians! It’s mind-boggling to me when I hear friends or family say that I pretend I know the truth (my beliefs are nearly the same as his), while speaking against theirs. The thing is…I’m not. Its just that I’m secure in my not knowing. A lot of us non-Christians (not all, of course) never pretend we have a single clue what the answers are. We simply know right from wrong.
    In my experience, many Christians (not all) get upset and defensive when you state your beliefs- and it’s not because we’re questioning theirs we’re just speaking confidently about our own- because it makes them think about things that contradict their religion and, if truly considered in the absence of defensiveness and ego, would flip their world on its axis.
    Now on a more personal note, most of my experiences with Christians (having grown up as one in a Baptist church) have been made up of nothing but double standards, judgment, and people looking outwards rather than within. Of course, not all Christians!

  • @jdmala

    I’m a Christian, but this is one of my favorite bands. Jonny has a major problem with government(government overreach) and religion. His mom was a devout Christian and he feels like God abandoned her to suffer and die with cancer(see their song“God went North”) Jonny also went to healing revivals with her and he got a bad taste in his mouth from whoever the evangelist was. Plus, his mom gave a money to this evangelist. He believed it was all a big scam.

    Pastor Rob, I would really appreciate clarification. I have always been confused about the finding the truth within argument. I think everyone interprets the bible from their own way and I think that is why there are many variations of religion. On a societal scale I think that our interpretation of politics and ethics aligns our personal views of the world. No 2 Christians think exactly alike because God crested them in his separate image. Their interpretation must be found within themselves using the senses that God has provided them with rather than living life a certain way because they are told to do so based on another person's perspective/interpretation. I really respect your perspective and I enjoy hearing your talking points. You have opened my mind to a lot of things on this channel and I really appreciate that.
    On an unrelated note Dayseeker - Hollow Shell is a very pro Christian song that I think you will love.

  • @sethtrey
    @sethtrey 2 года назад

    Fun song. Obviously it starts sarcastically, but it keeps up with these commands like "create fear to feed the system", which it doesn't really make obviously clear, so I can't tell whose voice they're actually in. Is it intentionally confusing? To answer the main question, this kind of thing is why we can't wake up. Because this song is exactly like its bridge says: tuned into two stations simultaneously, trying to frantically convince itself it's not radio controlled. Though in my experience, this sort of interference usually means they must be going somewhere far away. Which station got louder with these guys, I wonder? Also, would they be okay not getting paid for their song, if they are so against copyright?

  • @NyxNovaStar
    @NyxNovaStar 2 года назад +1

    The quote by the band about the song was not hypocritical as you may think. They never intended it to be taken as "we are right you are wrong" they simply wanted to encourage people to think freely and decide for themselves how to live. Not to let leaders, be they religious or political, decide who you are and what you will become. The quote is showing that only you yourself know your truth, not others and they should not decide for you. It's a statement on the philosophy of Individualism. The song itself is more about people abusing religion for their own personal gain, Johnny, the lead singer and writer of the songs, grew up in a strict religious household and his mother died when he was still young and was very religious. They made a song thats for more supportive called God Went North, it is about how his mother who died of cancer and him comforting her and praying for God to end her suffering, thats right he prays. He's not a firm believer but even he prayed in that moment.

  • @ShivaX51
    @ShivaX51 2 года назад +4

    I think your first interpretation is right. The whole "They've got your Christ on copyright," would indicate an idea that "our Christ (interpretation) is the only correct one, we have the copyright."
    Then think of all the Olsteens of the world and you get to where they seem to be coming from. "They're selling Heaven tonight," seems to back up that angle, imo.

  • @laughincoffin9842

    Pastor Rob may you react you Bad omens: Mercy? It’s another song with lyrics tied to questions about religion and I’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts on it. Here’s a segment from the song, in the second verse:
    “To a rat in a maze, the end is where the start begins
    But if we made it out, I know that we would do it all again
    We live and die in vain like treasure on a sinking ship
    All in the name of a God, we'd just abandon and forget”

    The lead singer Jonny Hawkins grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household and left the faith. But he also seems to be anti-leftist which is not a combo you see too often. He is one of the few modern rockstars who is openly anti our current government. Anyway, that’s just some background.
    DEFINITELY you should check out “God Went North.” It’s about him being bedside at his dying mother’s deathbed, and watching her transition into the afterlife, and holding onto her faith as she does it, even though he doesn’t believe anymore. It’s a heart-breaking song, but amazing.

    You read into it wrong. What the lead singer was saying when he said the truth is within yourself, he’s not telling people to listen to what he has to say, he’s telling people not to take the word of what their government tells them and trust in themselves and be confident with themselves that everyone’s truth IS the truth. Whatever YOU believe in as an individual, no matter who you are, is the truth because we all have the right to think for ourselves.

    Hi guys, first off, I do understand why you may see this as primarily a condemnation of faith from yet another "edgy rock band," but wanted to give you some additional information. I use to be friendly with the guys, since my work in the music industry put me in their home area of San Antonio a lot, and I had a chance to actually discuss faith with Jonny at one point. The guys aren't really anti religion, so much as they are anti abuse of religion. Because there are unfortunately still some corrupt churches and preachers (and politicians) who take advantage of their congregation/ followers for the sake of attaching their own desires to a stronger cause, you wind up with plenty of people being led astray by a commercialized view of religion. This is largely why so many people now claim to dislike Christians, when in reality, they hate the hypocrisy of those who claim to be Christian, yet show opposite behavior, all the while acting like they have a monopolyon morals (or Copyright on Christ). At times you can see a lot of love and faith on display in NM's work, such as with "God Went North," a heartbreaking love letter about Jonny's mother, asking God to take her home and end her suffering. Also, in their cover of Paco Estrada's "Vesica Pisces," which is one of the most beautiful expressions of faith I've ever heard from a band, Mainstream or otherwise. I can't speak for the mindset of the guys today in 2022, but that's just my experience with them previously.

    It’s about politicians using religion to force their agenda. Also the line “sign the bottom line” is a phrase synonymous with joining the military. Religious political people force over the top patriotism on their followers and serving your country is less of a choice and more of an obligation because of the societal norms in their community.

    You nailed it with your first comment about the lyrics. You missed the point and got a bit defensive toward the end. You read his quote and missed that he said "some" meaning the corrupt. By saying he is taking a jab at Christianity,(which is most used in politics in the US) you are saying that he stated that ALL christians are that way. Which is simply not true. It is more a jab at organized religion as a whole. About not telling ppl to sign up for your truth, stay faithful to the truth within you. Twist it how you want, but this is a spiritual band speaking their truth, either you resonate or you don't. It seems you liked their vibe, which wouldn't be a truth w/o how they are. Just like Lacey Sturm wouldn't be the amazing creature she is w/o her truth. Nice opinion tho! I was wondering if you would get it or not. It seemed your higher self did, then your opinion fell victim to your ego. You should listen to more, this band is awesome! Blessed be!

    Lyrics read like a fundamental misunderstanding of Christianity that is fair to the extent that you have only been exposed to certain Christians or certain ideals of what Christians believe. God's invitation is to all to repent and turn to him. Christians often expect the unregenerate to behave according to what the regenerated are called to through sanctification. That being said, the idea that we "know who goes to heaven" is a misconception is completely wrong. We are told in scripture that we will know who is a brother in Christ by their "fruits". Fruits are only made possible because you are connected to the vine. We are also told quite succinctly that a brother cannot live in sin, not that they cannot sin, but they cannot continue long in sin, they will feel guilt and seek repentance. If a person is in sin, but feels no shame or need for repentance, they are probably not regenerated. This is just what scripture says see Ephesians 5. But, remember, this is what Christians are called to, not those that have not accepted Christ.

    The absolute craziest thing! So as I was commenting on your guys review of Moitionless in White when you released it. I said, hmm... As much as I loved metal and such I winder how come they don't cover some other rock with indictitive type titles despite lyrics being fairly clear?
    Just then One of my other favorites, Nothing More came on and it was Christ Copyright. I was like, yea, like THIS! Said I was going to suggest it but then assumed nah, they won't even see the comment so it'd be pointless.
    Fast forward a week or so and BOOM you're covering it. Crazy

    I really like the fact that you pointed out that they are saying a similar version of the same thing that they are against. I love Nothing More, I will say it’s funny that they also claim to have the “truth.” But, in defense of the band and their statement, the idea of “truth” coming from within could also be a defense FOR everyday Christians (or whatever people believe), like us. It’s almost supportive-ish in a way. I don’t know. Anywho! Great video as always!

    It is clear so many people recommend songs in this vein to hear your interpretatuons, but also possibly shock and awe (not necessarily this one in particular). I do admit its interesting to hear your thoughts on songs that challenge Christianity in whatever form. However I do agree with Gages comments at the beginning that you become desensitized by it when it's done over and over again.
    For a change of pace I'd recommend a metal band that aligns with the Christian faith. I know you've done Demon Hunter previously, so I'd recommend Times of Grace, which is a subset of Killswitch Engage. I'd recommend the song Hymn of Broken Man or Willing. While I'm not a Christian I recognize the value of faith in something and just generally being a decent human being. Would be good to hear your thoughts on songs of that approach rather than just shock and awe. Nonetheless, great channel.and dialogue as always.

    It's a little refreshing to see someone who accepts Christ who also rejects the abuse by the very institution that claims Him as well. I love Christ with all my heart and place value in the Truth in Him only, not in institutions and traditions of man. It hurts to see that all the world knows of Christ is what is being pushed out by these politicians and mega-church leaders that aren't in it for Him. People are rejecting Christ because of how these people are representing it and not because of what the Gospel preaches, which causes misunderstandings like the lyrics of this song. I LOVE Nothing More's music but I can't agree with their understanding. It's just frustrating being caught between both i guess

      Again, the statement "find your own truth" is a truth claim. It's saying that absolutes are false and relative truth is true. It's self defeating because it's an absolute statement and placing a "monopoly" on a specific truth, ie Relativism.

    From the way my brother explained it to me, Nothing More started as a church band in the church that they all grew up in. At some point church leadership was ousted for being absurdly corrupt, and while their faith wasn’t necessarily diminished, organized religion left a bad taste in their mouths. Obviously, the line “god hates fags and communism,” is a direct bash on WBC, and a more wide bash on conservatives that misuse their religion for their political beliefs. I don’t know anyone from Nothing More personally, but my brothers who have used a lot of the same studios, producers, and agents, plus playing with Nothing More a plethora of times, make the band out to be entirely religious, yet vehemently anti organized religion.
    Idk I’ve never met anyone in the band. I ran into the bassist at top golf once (but didn’t want to bother him), and saw the band open for The Toadies at a free show during Fiesta. I think it was at NIOSA lol
