A couple years ago at my place of employment, we designed a 3,000HP e-motor that served as a Pony Motor that helped start a 20,000HP midstream pipeline motor. The large motor simply has too much inertia to accelerate itself from a standstill. I suspect they also wanted to be able to start it with crude in the pump, but that wasn't a requirement. I didnt know pony engines existed… Great video! Thank you for the content.

  • @punman5392

The spirit of the pony motor lives on in aircraft APUs. Most large commercial jets have a “huffer” or mini gas turbine in the tail that provides electrical power and compressed air needed to start the engines, after which it is usually shut down. Older planes like the heavy bombers of WW2 had a “put-put” in the tail. Basically a lawnmower engine used for pretty much the same purpose. They’re only usually used when ground power isn’t available

The V4 John Deere pony engine was first used on the 70 diesel. It fired both cylinders on a side. The R was introduced in 1947 and it never really replace the Model D. which remained in production until 1953 because sales remained strong. The 720 and 730 as well as the 820 and 830 were made available with electric start using a 24 volt starting and charging system that divides the auxiliaries into two 12 volt systems grounded separately from the 24 volt system.

On a larger scale, there was a coal-fired thermal power generating station in my city many years ago. It used gas turbine (jet) engines, three I think, to excite the dynamos to get them working without power from some external source. This was a self-starting capability for the plant.
Incredibly, at times of heavy electrical demand they would fire up the gas turbines to put more power into the grid!

I hope I am not being repetitious but the actual procedure for starting a D8 CAT dozer (and many other diesels of the 30s,40s,50s...) is as follows:
    1. Hand crank the gas pony into life. (The exhaust went through a pipe that passed through the intake manifold of the big motor and also was cooled by the big motor coolant, which helped warm things up.)
    2. The big motor was decompressed and fuel shut off with a lever(s) and the clutch was engaged on the pony motor which started the big motor spinning. ( This brought up the oil pressure and heated up the motor which was essential on cold days. Depending on how cold it was dictated how long one would spin the big motor with the pony, it could be 5 minutes or more.)
    3. When the time was judged to be correct the big motor was started by throwing the levers that controlled the decompression and fuel hopefully resulting in the big motor starting. The pony motor clutch was then disengaged and motor stopped. ( This is a lot easer said than done. A lot of thrashing about with levers was required.)
Pony motors were popular due to the poor 6 Volt batteries and starters of that period and one had virtually no maintenance issues with these systems.
I always found it interesting that John Deere used a V4 pony motor (with aluminum connecting rods) to start a relatively crude 2 cylinder motor.

I don't know if you covered it yet, but International Harvester had a sort-of "builtin pony motor"; the diesel engine was started on gasoline first (with spark plugs & all, compression lowered by a special valve that opened into an empty pocket in the block) then when sufficiently warmed up, it was switched on diesel. This way, a simple car-sized battery and 12V starter was used, enabling any car or pick-up to boost the tractor if the battery was low. No need for glow plugs either.

Pony motors comes from steam engines, where small units were engaged with enormous ones to turn the (building sized) flywheel to the correct starting position. You can see videos of one in action at the Crossness Pumping Station (deserve the capital letters...). Massive steam engines used on boats also used that kind of little starter engines.
There's also a very special pony motor missing from this video (maybe because there no video of it operating existing). The Riedel 2 stroke flat 2, that was used to start the Jumo 004 jet engine. Yep the first jet engine that powered the first jet fighter used a 2 stroke engine, that was itself started... by pulling a rope starter like a lawnmower. Yeap. The secret weapon of the nazis was started like a lawnmower. That sounds less fearsome said this way ^^'

Are you aware that International Harvestor used a system of releasing part of the cylinder compression of their diesel engines, and then starting them on gasoline? Once the engine got warmed up on gas, controls were manipulated to shut off the ignition and gasoline feed, increase the compression and run the engine on diesel. That would make an interesting operation to witness.

Haha, definitely not. I used to make small weed whacker 2 stroke mini 12 volt alternators to charge batteries where no power was available. The best one was able to charge at 14 amps, 14.5 volts and it would be screaming to do that. That was about 1/2 horsepower at the most. You might be able to rig up a flywheel to it and use that to drive the Bendix gear but....why? We have a solar panel and charge controller that puts 30 amps at 14.6 volts into drained batteries and is quiet and works whenever the sun shines.
Still, its fun to make things with left over weed whacker motors. I have to say that the weed whacker battery charger worked great at a lake where the stereo system ran the boat battery down at a small island and the 70 hp Evinrude 2 stroke wouldn't crank. The tiny weed whacker charged it enough in 10 minutes to start the outboard motor.
