BRILLIANT idea to impermanently install shelves in a wardrobe! When we lived in the class C, those wardrobe “closets” were useless for hanging and stacking my clothes in it meant I had to re-organize the wardrobes monthly. That is where I began to roll my clothes to store them, however. Great space saver.
Your a genius!!! Thank you! !! My husband currently I'd a over the road truck driver. His truck has zero storage!! This is a great way not to damage to the truck!!
Hi Robin WOW!! What a great idea for the wardrobe , The gel foam for the bed sounds divine!! Every inch of space you can save in your RV is a blessing, and this sounds like the perfect solution. You never cease to amaze me with your great hints. Robin, I have to tell you, that I get so much enjoyment out of your videos ,they are fun, informative and I feel like I am not watching just another u-tuber, I feel I am watching a friend share great info and ideas. For this old lady who wishes more and more we were back on the road you bring me much needed happiness. Thank you for sharing and please don't stop these videos, I think you have found your calling in a country that is so broken you are bringing much joy. Thanks again, Til next time Take care ,stay safe and BE FREE!!!
Your right about that. Me too she's awesome and experenced. I think she's brave, smart and she has a down to earth attitude. Like.."Let me tell you this....! .want a cup of cofffee"? Lol
Hi Robyn, once I saw your video I knew I had to make it fit into my 2 wardrobes, 1 short and wide the other long and narrow. If I could add some pictures that would be great for you to see it. I already had the MDF shelving but other than that, it cost me $80.00AUD. As i did it myself, I used gaffa tape to hold the support poles to the wall until the first shelf was in place. I used L shaped brackets underneath the shelf and also ontop to hold them in place. My only tip is to measure what you are putting into the shelf. I made the top of the long cupboard a wider gap for my snow boots and gum boots, when not in use. fits perfectly. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing. ☺☺☺☺☺
I made my bed more comfy by getting everything off of it. I emptied out a storage unit and all the totes with everything else went into my bedroom. I slept on the couch which unfolded into a bed. After about a month of that enough was enough so yesterday I took everything out of the bedroom and stuffed it into my van. Holy cow, this motorhome feels more like a home now. A real bedroom! Now if I can get a job I won't lose everything. I've been applying everywhere but no one will hire me
The Dollar Store has self stick shelf liner and non skid liners. They also have various sizes of containers that work great in all kinds of drawers and shelves.
Thanks Robin. I have had shelving damage in the back end of my RV (yes bumpy roads) and want to do the repair myself - disabled hand but you showed me a way I think I can do it myself. Thanks. We are new and have found your channel invaluable. Even back in the boondocking (which we cannot do - due to disabilities) days when you were looking for free water. Thanks.
They also make toppers for “short queens” I wish I had thought of cutting a regular one because it was a little cheaper. And great idea with the shelving!! My new RV pantry.. clearly designed by someone that never opened one. Paper thin shelves on the bottom with tons of void space up top.. like the shelf could stand the weight of anything to fill the void space. Your solution is the best yet! Thanks!!
Good info. BTW, if you don't want to use 2x4s you can use 2z2s, 1x2s, or even 1x3/4" double kiln dried fir in the shoe closet you're making. Even if you decide to use it for other uses, you won't be putting much weight there, because it's size is limited. With smaller dimension lumber however, you'll want to make pilot holes. If you can't fit two peoples arms in there to hold the stock, you can use a dollop of construction adhesive or silicone that could be scraped off if need be, later on. Or, you could make spreaders to push the uprights apart, and just knock 'em out later. With bigger cupboards like the one you showed here, (expandable by twisting) shower or curtain rods can be used while you're doing the job. I've done that before, 'borrowing' the rods from my kitchen window cafe curtains. Cheers!
ROBIN-if you ever do anything like that again where you need to hold something in place temporarily with no bulk and no holes to drill USE DOUBLE FACED TAPE- it’s thin, easy to use, not permanent if you want to move something. 👍😎. I use it for all kinds of things, always keep some on hand for projects. But this is really a brilliant project. And I loved your bed set-up! Such a cozy little home you have created. 💜🦋🌸
Thank you so much I have been racking my brain for shelves in my build. I have a bed but I'm getting gel topper I do need comfort in bed. Thanks for sharing with this newbee. Watching You, and others, on You tube has changed my life so much in two years. Gaining knowledge of how and what to do and the courage to try making my dream happen and achieve my goal. That is to enjoy my golden years.
I just recently moved into an rv fulltime. We are stationary so not moving around. I just did this to my closet and what a difference! Thanks for sharing .
I finally got off the fence and started working on my partially underground tiny house. Watching Nomad videos convinced me I can live well in a small space. It has 110 and 220 wiring already, helpful. I worked out there today, mostly dragging stuff out. I have a triangular shed across the 10x10 japanese garden, and it will become a greenhouse. I am pumped! Indecision has chewed me up, I prefer action. I have plenty of actions to take.
Hello Another great video I have a solution for your Shelves Before you put the boards in the 4 that go up and down To stop them from falling in while you're putting the boards in Put A piece of Velcro On the back top of the board It will let it at Stick To the wall It'll hold the board up so it won't fall off while you put your shelves in Stay safe 🎅
Great video! I’ve used 1” x 4” boards as they take up less space than 2” x 4”, and those little L brackets are the boss for setting up shelves! Love that you share all that you discover. Thank you! I have told so many people about your awesome videos! Love, Love, Love them!
If you have one or can borrow one, an electric knife always cuts foam THE BEST! The cut is clean and not lumpy or uneven. Thanks for the foam-gel review and thanks for your upbeat enthusiasm!
Great shelf hack! And I couldn't agree more about the gel topper; I've been using the same type for more than a year. I must say it's absolutely ESSENTIAL to use a freshly sharpened knife. This is experience talking. First time I used a camp knife and it took 35 minutes of tiny slices. Second timee was less than 5 minutes because I used a chefs knife I had just retouched: worked like a dream!
Don't ya just love the Container Store? Over the holiday's, I've decided to organize all my drawers. Spent 2.5 hours in my local CS just browsing all the options.
If someone needs to do this on their own, you could always use command strip velcro, regular velcro, tape rolled up, or something to that effect at the top of the 2x4’s just to hold them up well enough to get everything in place and should cause any damage.
Thank you again for another great idea, Robin! Thanks also, in part, that due to your inspiration, I am now the proud owner of a 2004 Class C Gulf Stream Conquest Ultra. This rig has been well-cared for by only two super responsible previous owners, and only has 19,000 miles on it! She's a beauty that I've named Virginia for reasons that are too complicated to go into. I can't wait to start really making her my own, and your videos have helped me so much, so thank you! You're the best! ❤
Wow, great idea! Definitely going to remember that! Btw - u might like the "konmari" system of folding, even better. Similar to how u do it, but would likely produce an even smaller bundle, (especially if u folded those shirts lengthwise 1 more time.) Also makes it so the folded items can be "stacked" very neatly next to each other. I just folded everything in my house using konmari method, & it has freed up sooooo much space, & so much easier to find things, as everything is all lined up very neatly, no more rummaging under, around, & thru stuff! I am totally sold on this system! Konmari also embraces minimalist philosophy of "keep only what u love", which is something Im still working on...(as I really hate throwing useful things away) Trying to reduce stuff levels in hopes of doing rv living *someday*. (Lots of youtube videos on konmari if u want to check it out...)
Wow! I actually bought the same Linenspa gel topper 2" for my queen bed! I was given a mattress set, and they told me to get a foam topper as it wasn't very soft. I researched and bought this one. You are so right! It's like sleeping on a cloud! Sometimes I just don't want to get out of bed in the morning! First video, referred by Call Clutter Fairy. So glad to find you.
Oh my gosh I am so glad I stumbled on this video!! I was wracking my brain how to put up shelves in my moms new mobile home which has paper thin walls. This is going to work perfectly
I can't tell you Robin how timely this video is! I am trying to put shells in my kitchen and this is perfect for my park model RV at the Lake! Thank you and congratulations on being on Camo Dave channel! He thought you had a really good channel!
I did something similar to your shelf project in an apartment once. I wasn't allowed to make holes in the walls but needed shelving. This method works great! Also, I love your channel. Such smart and concise information. Thank you for looking out for the nomads and showing us all how to get it done!
Love it!! Thank you. P.s I had the nice guys at Home depot cut me 4 inch x 5ft strips out if my plywood for my braces. This way I gained as much space as I could. The 2x4 stole 4 inches which in an RV is valuable space 😉
Try a wool topper. They are expensive, but they keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An added bonus is that they are naturally mold, mildew and dust mite resistant.
Hay Robin Creativity you did not need the second L-bracks. if use 20 lb. 1/4 in. Nickel-Plated Shelf Support Pegs if look and see if the peg have a hole in it. if yes all you need is screws 1/2 in long # 8 screw Pan head or round head. just use four screws and screw-it in the hole and that will keep the self there even a big bump.
I have ELFA shelves and drawers in our pantry and daughters closet in the sticks and bricks... LOVE THEM. They also make drawer dividers if needed! Thanks for sharing!
My partner and I tried that same exact egg crate bed thing. It SUCKED! Just like you said, it got thin real fast, didn't last. It actually made the bed worse. I'll have to check out the one you settled on. And great shelf idea! Thanks for sharing. Happy RVing.
Here's a tip to make the best use of your shelving space: get your containers first, then you can space the little "L" supports to fit them better. Notice how much unused space is above each of your shelves. You probably could have put another shelf or two in that cabinet. Also, you could have used a 1x2 strip against the outside wall to drill the support brackets into giving you an additional 1 1/2" of width on each shelf. Just some suggestions to improve your already great idea.
This was right on time!!! I just had someone look at my space because i need shelving. The bed, I have that same topper, and its amazing!!!I Thanks for the ideas. I appreciate you!!!!🎉❤
I am so happy I found your channel. I love to camp and love to learn DIY hacks. Also, your personality is so chipper and I love it. Thank you so much for your videos
Awesome!! You just solved a problem I was rolling around in my head for a year or so.... I want to maximize my bathroom space w/o poking holes and this is a fabulous solution!! Thanks Robin!!
Do this next time, where you want the shelves, cut a slot INTO the 2x4's where the shelf will fit into them, thus not needing the screws and brackets, the width of the shelves IF cut close enough to fit tight will eliminate any flopping around.
Lol in my Wolf pup which was brand new, and i had never even been in a trailer.....the first day, a friend came to visit, we had nowhere to sit except the bed, which had never been slept on or sat on...I told her just to come over and sit on the bed with me.....I barely heard a crack before we were launched down into the storage compartment! Upon going outside to inspect how I could fix the problem, the bed above laid on thin plywood which had only 1 inch by one inch whit pine stapled across the plywood. That was it! So a total of 250 lbs was all it took. I had to use my 2 cheap hammers with their head side down, and roll the handles upward to hold the mattress and plywood back up. 4 yes later, upon telling this story I realized where my hammers are! No wonder I couldn’t find them in my box of tools! Anyway, I have never understood how they get away with calling those stock RV beds Mattresses! 1 inch thic BEFORE anyone is on it. I believe they forget the inner material on mine! There is no sheet made to fit, so my entire last 3 years I use 2 zipped together down sleeping bags on top of the mattress a duvet cover on top of that, another layer of 2 zipped up thinner 50 degree rated sleeping bags then a Velux blanket-topped by a pretty, Indian designed turquoise and black washable bedspread. I weigh 120 and still feel the plywood ache, but my bones aren’t grinding against plywood....concrete is no harder to sleep on!
Thanks for the idea. I just finished installing shelves in my Winnebago Travato wardrobe, but took it a step further. I have a woodshop so I actually put pullout wooden shelves with drawer slides, but like yours the base sides are just wedged against the walls and it worked great. Thanks again. Love your videos. Gregg
Thank you 💖 I have been wanting to put shelves in our bottom bunk that we use for large kitchen items and food but as you said do not want to ruin it or drill into something. I can't wait to get started on these.
Great video! Pretty innovative shelving. At first, when you started describing things, my eyes kinda glazed over alittle, but your following pictures were excellent and showed everything. Knew exactly how you did it. You can see how much more storage you have than just hanging a few things. Also, the recommendation of that specific type of mattress topper is appreciated too. I noticed that most RVers have to either replace the entire mattress with a "normal" one, or get a bed topper of some kind. Good to know that "gel" one can be cut too!
If want 2 in more room and your shelves system still work. Just get 1 x4 or 1 X2 boards. just use 1/2 or 3/4 screws for the l bracket. this system will take the same weight. if you do not want go all the top on the side board Just cut the plywood bigger so it sit on top the 1 x4 board and screws down on the board that became you top shelf hope is help you. you can do it in any upper cabinet four lag and 1/4 plywood. sorry need someone who have saw.
I just watched this now. A really good idea! Another way for a solo RVer would be to use tension bars to temporarily hold the four corner posts in place until you have a couple of shelves in. Also, could you have used 2 X 1s or 4 X 1s instead of the 2 X 4s? It would give you an extra 2 inches of space. Just a thought.
Another outstanding video! This is a great solution in order to get more storage space. I'll remember this... and if I can't remember details, I can always go back to this video as reference. Your videos are ALWAYS useful! Thank you!!!
Thanks for the tip about the bed topper. I use a cot and it is good to know I can cut down a twin sized topper. Also glad it comes in 2” and 3” sizes. Will order through you when the time comes.
Check ur book that came with ur unit Robyn, they all ome with electric and pluming scomatics...my current chore is figuring out how to build a small closet in mine...😁😁
You just make the best, most informative videos! Thanks so much for all you put into researching and creating these. Totally addicted to this channel. Keep up the fantastic work!
Come visit me with all of your amazing ideas. I am in the KC metro area about 9 hours on I-70. Since I am still rebuilding the inside of my camper I could sure use your creative brain.
Well done! Saving this for my future modification. I think I would only have one true thing to hang, so this is a great design to shift wardrobe storage in any RV!!!
Awesome idea on the shelves I have the coat closet in my trailer that I need to make selves I bought 2x2's and was going to use the 2x2's for cross bracing as well but the plywood idea is better using L brackets thanks for sharing will give it a try this weekend. I bought my trailer used and the first time I sat on the bed I couldn't believe anyone could sleep on it first thing I did was throw it out and I bought one of those foam mattresses, I have no idea why these rv manufacturers use such crappy mattresses.
Wow looks great! Gosh I was thinking... You've got the pop out back rests on your bed.. You could cover those with the foam too... Or make a cushion for your chairs... Or driver seat..

Love your idea for the shelves in the closet! May try this in mine. I have one of those 3" gel foam toppers I bought for my pickup before I got my 22 ft motorhome. It is very comfortable! I have a jack knife couch for a bed now so I can't fold it up with the couch like you do your Murphy bed. I'm going to see if I can maybe fit it under the couch when not in use. Love your videos!!

I know, right!! Robin is extraordinary !!
Yes, me too! Robin is amazing 😉 and I learn so much stuff I never thought I would...
Your right about that. Me too she's awesome and experenced. I think she's brave, smart and she has a down to earth attitude. Like.."Let me tell you this....! .want a cup of cofffee"? Lol
If you're just 1 person doing this you can use 2 adjusting curtain rods to keep pressure on the 2x4's while you're positioning your first shelves

I was thinking the same thing!! Lol Great idea!
Yes that would work too but she was just using what she had on hand already. 😊 Not everyone keeps velcro on hand 😉
Also you could paint the shelves first.
Great minds think alike, I just typed in that very thing in a different comment. Guess I'll go back as its not news LOL.
@GrandJEM Well okay but she used plywood and yes you can paint all sides. That is what I would definitely do.
I transformed my coat closet the same way. Removeable shelves. Became a large cooking cabinet... Canning equipment, mainly. Made a huge difference!
Great video! I’ve used 1” x 4” boards as they take up less space than 2” x 4”, and those little L brackets are the boss for setting up shelves! Love that you share all that you discover. Thank you! I have told so many people about your awesome videos! Love, Love, Love them!

Rght on, and those long serrated fish knives work well too.
Electric carving(Turkey carvers) knives take seconds and carve the foam like butter 😉
What is a chef’s knife? Like a bread knife?
@@karinhart489 it's a large sharp blade and a bread knife is a long serrated knife
Don't ya just love the Container Store? Over the holiday's, I've decided to organize all my drawers. Spent 2.5 hours in my local CS just browsing all the options.
What a great idea for the shelves! If you don't know exactly how far apart you want them, you can drill several holes to make them adjustable.
We put a memory foam mattress on our bed in the rv. My shine came up with the idea to use the electric knife. It cut right threw like butter. 👍
Nice work on the shelves, good to have friends that are willing to share information and help. Thank you as usual you rock!
I’m grateful for the bed topper info!!!! I’m going stir crazy trying to figure out what to buy!
OMG. My bed is terrible!! Thanks for the link. I am 66 with arthritis..thank you..thank you!!

I wish you have given us more viewing content about the shelves & brackets for those of us who are not as handy.....pictures are better than words?

Awesome idea for the shelves!!! And who doesn’t want to improve the RV bed!!! I may very well use BUTH of these tips!,! GREAT VIDEO! Thanks!!
Lauri
I appreciate you!!!!🎉❤
Thank you! I’ve been looking for ideas on how to do my shelf’s in my rv closet for years and this is how I’m going to do it!
I am so happy I found your channel. I love to camp and love to learn DIY hacks. Also, your personality is so chipper and I love it. Thank you so much for your videos
Necessity is the mother of invention, eh? Well done. On screen, that no slip shelf liner looks fancy. Very nice. Great solution.
What a great Idea thanks ... I was searching exactly how to do shelves in my fifthwheel. ( sorry for my english I am a french canadian) Linda
Ingenious shelving!
Bought the mattress topper. Thanks for the tip. Oh wow, Robin. You are a gift to us. Thank you so very much!
Marirose, I totally agree with you!
Can you give me the link to the mattress topper
Another video with terrific content! You are the most informative nomad out there, besides Bob Wells!!! DIY AWAY!! Love it!!!❤️😍 Devo does driving 💋
Gregg
Wow thanks! We have quite a bit of space we could shelve, but i was worried about drilling into the walls. Great idea!
I love this idea... shelves in wardrobe, I can modify it for my needs.
I haven't read all the comments so someone may have already said this. Those boards look more like 1 x 2 than 2 x 4. Enjoyed the video. Great idea.
Use a electric turkey knife to trim your memory foam. It cuts like butter.
If you are lacking an extra set of hands, try keeping the 2x4s in place with some painters tape.
Thank you 💖
I have been wanting to put shelves in our bottom bunk that we use for large kitchen items and food but as you said do not want to ruin it or drill into something.
Sorry, but a 1x4 or 1x2 will NOT hold the same weight as a 2x4!
Nice solution for shelves!
1" by 4" side pieces also work. Just a suggestion... Ann
Question theme: In the end, how much hanger type closet space will you have? What did you do with items that were on hangers? What items need hangers?
This is absolutely brilliant!!!
Robin... you are always full of such helpful information and tips that can be applied in the home too xxx xxx
Everyone needs a Carol.
Hi Robin! Hope you’re having a good week!
It might be fun to use cloth fabric scraps to cover the shelves also! Thanks for this idea..this will be fun
Thanks SO much! I’ve got a very uncomfortable mattress at home going to try this topper too!
Smartest RV storage idea ever seen on RUclips.
Well done! Saving this for my future modification. I think I would only have one true thing to hang, so this is a great design to shift wardrobe storage in any RV!!!
Use some command strips on the back of the 2x4s if you don’t have help.
I love your channel , I am so I inspired, keep making video’s
Good job on the shelves. They turned out great and look good too.
Great job. Find joy in the journey.
Wow looks great! Gosh I was thinking... You've got the pop out back rests on your bed.. You could cover those with the foam too... Or make a cushion for your chairs... Or driver seat..
I dunno just thinking.. Lol.. Love your channel..
Awesome ideas and love the shelves. My son and his wife have the bed topper for there bed and its so comfortable. I bet its great in your RV.
Finally a solution for the wardrobe in my Rpod! Thank you so much, what a great idea! Your videos are always so helpful.

Brilliant idea about creating those shelves! 😄
Great video, girl. I was going to purchase the exact model that you have, but a 2019. I got cold feet!! I just dont want to travel by myself!!
Genius! Thank you for the idea!
Great idea for shelves, could use that same idea in a home closet to.
I LOVE the container store!!
Rockin' Robin! :-) I enjoy every one of your vids, thanks!
