  • Enjoy tiny airplanes? In this video we'll take a look at the MinimumRC Butterfly V2 ultralight micro airplane kit, and I'll share my experience of trying to build and fly it! (More "flight" footage at 10:28)
BLUF: This kit takes a good bit of skill and patience to assemble correctly. I can't recommend it for beginners. I did a poor job of working with this style of airplane construction, but if you do put the effort into setting it up properly, I think the Butterfly V1 would make a very enjoyable indoor (or zero wind) slow flyer.
BTW, the kit does include a spare motor mount. Also, the propeller is rather ridiculous. I think a lighter, swept prop would be much better.
Thanks to MinimumRC for providing the Butterfly V1 for review.

I bought one of these a few years ago branded as the TY black flier. It's not the easiest to build, screws are really small, but this guy has made it look harder than it is. Follow the instructions and dry fit before applying glue, you'll be ok.

Yes, this plane was definitely just not for me.

I was smart and used a hot air gun made for shrinking Monocote to shrink the plastic on the tail piece instead of a lighter. It still broke. The little plastic pieces on the tail needed replacing too, so I 3D printed some. Worked good.
The mystery glue was really getting me mad, so I got some 3M 77 adhesive spray and it's freakin' MAGIC on those wings!

I bit the bullet and I’m going to give one a try. After having a bunch of experience with my sons night Vapor and reading the instructions a few times after watching your review again I’m going to try a few different things. I’m going to use a vapor motor, gearbox and propeller as it’s lighter and the gearbox is black nylon reinforced plastic. I think using 3m 77 spray adhesive to apply the film will provide a better end result than table gluing. With that massive 260mah battery it still looks insanely tail heavy by the way it was porpoising. The electronics board looks like it needs to be glued farther forward for correct CG. A properly trimmed Vapor will maintain altitude at half throttle, climb above that and descend below that without roughing elevator.

I have a UMX Vapor Lite HP and it's one of my favorites! The landing gear is the only part that has broken so far.

The Vapor is a PNP, right? I think I'd have better success with that lol!

@@RCwithAdam1 Sadly no, it's BNF with Spektrum. Gotta get you set up with some sort of multi-protocol module so you can enjoy all these micro planes!

Compared to a UMX vapor this has a smaller wingspan and carries a HUGE battery. Watching your attempts to launch it the plane is very tail heavy and overweight. A vapor flies with a 70mah battery. I am going to try one and extend the motor out another 5mm and put the battery in front of the forward wing mount.

some late info. it appears that the tail is seriously heavy; or excess elevator is being put in. it will behoove a pilot to KNOW whether this model has thrust offset (like a vapor). if so, the result is, continuous, positive aoa at the wing. angle of attack. during ANY turn, an airplane tends to lose altitude; thus, a pilot should learn to Anticipate the potential need for control inputs During any turn. !!! googletranslate

see the thrust Line (at the motor). it can be seen that the that main wing of this model did not have a good single-surface profile. compare the upper surface of the clark-y profile.

You are trying to punch above your weight. This type of microlite indoor model is not for absolute beginners like you seem to be. Try building something small but easier first. Like The minimum rc foam cessna for example. Also it didn't look like it was trimmed out at all. Did you even check the cg ? I'd practice building and flying berore you make any more videos. If you have more plans, then get the build and flying right first and don't waste our time.
